  3. one minor thing to concider is that a light pen or gun will only work in port 4 on the 400. no idea why this was done.there are schematics getting around that show this. this will exclude almost everything that uses those devices as they will need to be in port 1 . james

  20. Some 20 odd years ago, I modded the XL os to enable the 400/800 nmi reset. I just had to wipe out the id and date bytes at the begining of the rom and make small change to how pointer was set up. Don't know if i still have that file. James
  21. To read ibm format disks, You will need an aftermarket drive such as the toms 720 or BB floppy board. Atari drives will need to be modified. EG 1050 will will need happy or any other upgrade that can be programmed from the console or any upgrade that has the ability to do so Xf551 will need css upgrade or any other upgrade that can be told to read the 2nd half of the 512 byte sector. James
  22. What do you mean by screw down cartridge door? Is there a screw that has to be undone just to put in a cartridge? The 400 and 800 both have a leaver type clip, pull it towards keyboard and the door pops open. The power part is a design feature. It cuts power so a cart can be inserted. The 800 had an extra part that covered the rom/ram cards. Depending on when it was manufactured, it either had 2 plastic knobs that turned to release or was screwed down. The later ones was sold with full 48K so didn't need the plastic clips. earlier ones were sold with varying amounts of ram usually is 8K increments. The 400 has no such feature. James
  23. Wow. never knew about this. Wounder if the maker will release schematics etc of the xl setup? James
