  1. You can use an XF to read atr8000 disks however some work will be required to get the sectors in the same order as written.

There are 3 different DSDD disk layouts. Percom, ATR8000 and xf551. XF does side one from track 1 to 40 then side 2 from track 40 to 1.I cannot remember what the percom and atr do.

I know one does second side from track 1 to 40, and the other does track 1 both sides then track 2 both sides etc

.If you can borrow a Blackbox with floppy board,it can be set to read dsdd floppies in ATR8000 format as well as xf and percom.

  2. I have`only seen 2 monitor type programs for 400/800. Both use the 4K at $C000, $CFFF. One has 2 4K banks that can be selected under program control. Would say that omnimon would be similar to one of those 2. Extra hardware is required to support bank switching tho. Don't know if any emulator supports bank switching the $cxxx. Also depends on what address needs to written/read to switch banks.

  3. Dos XE has A 8 place table of drive types. ie sector size , number of sectors per track etc. If your drive size/type isn't in this table, too bad.

I saw this problem so decided to do something about it. I created a dos XE formatter that creates custom drive types, save it in dosXE and formates the disk.

I used it to create 16 meg partitions but these fail. Apparently, an add in is required. Also DosXE buffers the sector map for each drive. 2 or 3 16 meg partitions quickly fills all available memory. There is a MAX usable size for DosXE in its current form. Need to find the thread on atariage for both the formatter and max size.

  4. I do know the sparta dos formatter (cannot remember is it was 3.2. or 4.x) Formats SD standard speed on a USD and compatible drive using one of the fastest sector layouts possible instead of the atari standard sector layout. Have had comments from people that i sent disks to that load faster on their std drives back in the day.

  5. I pulled mine out after some years of non use. 1st turn on, got normal boot blue screen for 1/2 a second then nothing. After LOTS of messing around swapping and checking chips, power rails, verifying roms etc, I finally traced it to C7, part of the reset circuit.

Only clue that I had was that after inserting Star raiders (which has a bit set to tell the os it is a diagnostic cart and boots it after minimal os setup), I could sometimes see the star field then disappears but mostly hear the sound it makes when it starts, constantly start and stop. I fixed it by feeding +5v into the + end of cap for a while. Maybe not a permanent fix, but did get it going again.

  6. to test if something is working with 850, turn off everything, turn on 850 then turn on computer, no disk drives , sio2sd etc devices powered on.

You should hear after a few command frame failes, 2 or sector size beeps then a big long beep. If not, something is wrong. If it does, problem lays elsewhere.

That sound is the rs232 driver loading in to computer from 850. It can also be loaded from dos via a small program stored on disk.

The rs232 driver is not required for the printer port.

  7. The Buchholz/RAMbo/Wizztronics 256K upgrade and probably the Newell upgrade can access all 256K including the 2K under the I/O chip area, because it can switch in any of the 16 banks of 16K, including the 4 banks that make up the base 64K RAM.

I havent heard of that. It doesn't make sense either. I would have thought the hardware would be setup so this could not happen.

  9. Wow. I think I'll stick with the 1050 Duplicator format bug (DD first three sectors). The Happy is a nice board, but I was smitten with a real USD and Duplicator pair of 1050s in my youth; everything else just seems cumbersome. (There are a few enhacments I haven't gotten to spend time with yet.)

sure it is a bug?. Digging through the roms of usd, indus etc, the 1st 3 sectors are 256 bytes long, the firmware just sends/receives 128 bytes and pads out the other 128 bytes to fill the sector.
