lazy me did a google search AFTER posting this.
i came up with a few references to it, saying things like "clone found in NZ" so aside from proving i dont own the only one i didnt find out much. what i'd really like to see is a list of the built in games. if theres something there i've never played it could be worth setting up.

just got my 7th ed. digital press, its not in there, checked thru the files here, no mention of it... so should i bring this beast to light or would i just be revisiting ground already covered by other atarians?
ok what i'm talking about is this console i picked up on a swing thru new zealand, so lets assume its PAL. its a 2600 that claims to have 68 or so built in games, has funny looking 7800esque controllers and looks rather like a goofy 4 switcher. so if anybody has any details on this thing share them with me, if not does anybody want me to take pics and try and fire it up? i never have since its PAL and would most likely have some exotic sort of power needs.
anybody got one?

if you follow the vectrex newsgroup you can see the amazing legnths people will goto to keep an old system going. short of a smash screen any vectrex is salvagable, why? because the gamers feel that strongly about them. i imagine that there will always be some way to get your old hardware running, if a system spends its entire post purchase life in the hands of a considerate adult it should hold up very well.
boxed sealed games depress me, i ruin it if use it and if dont it just confirms that i've gone over to noninteractive side of game collecting. on the other hand they do make dandy tradebait

the baseball handheld you're referring to, the one near the lynx is actually a SEARS baseball 2, if you look up a bit and on the left side of the picture you'll see the actual ENTEX baseball 2 (between wildfire pinball and invader from space). they are of course the same game with a few cosmetic changes. entex is perhaps the king of classic handheld companies, their games were always well built and fun to play. the managed to capture the play feel of some great arcade titles such as turtles, stargate, defender, galaxian, pac man, super cobra and more. if ayones just getting into classic handheld collecting go for the entex games, you'll actually want to play them. anyways back to the point here, yes entex did lots of funny color changes, relabels and so on. if you study the picture closely you'll notice that there are two entex space invaders, one in black and one in gray. a lot of collectors assume that the baseball 2, pac man 2 and so on refer to the game being the second in a series when it really denotes "2" players, as in two sets of controls to be used at once.
battlestar galactica is a good find, one of the harder mattels to get since its popular with game people and sci-fi people. by itself with no box, it could fetch over $25 on ebay.
i have checked out that electronic plastic book, at least on their website and it looks like great, although its more of a picture book than a collecting guide, either way the $44 + shipping price is pretty steep. i find most of what i want to know on a few good sites like miniarcade.com and tomorrowsheros. for now its nice quiet hobby without a large number of monster bidders, anyone can get in and start a collection, you can even find a lot of games at thrift toy sections. i just hope it never gets as over inflated as the game and watch scene, thats just nuts.

i was putting together this series of collection pictures for a website, i never saw the forest for the trees until i had them all on the futon. normally they serve as a visual garnish to the cart shelves, when you look at them like that it would seem i've got more than a few. i started out by finding the donkey kong tabletop, then a friend gave me the galaxian so i decieded to get all the coleco tabletops. so once i had those the q*bert fit right in and i wanted to get all the games based on arcade titles, then i took a liking to certain companies and tried to complete their sets. the football, mattel and tandy games just fell into my hands at flea markets. now i've taken a liking to LCD games where as before it was LED and VFD only, theres really no end to it now. my collection pales next to emerald r's, the guy who sets up that amazing display every year at philly classic. i know of a few other collectors thru ebay like bayniac!, omega man and chickeneater but you never seen them on any msg boards. handheld collecting is a lot of fun and looks good in your gameroom, i think its the "forgotten" side of classic gaming.
i dont have any plans to pick up a gp32, wonderswan etc..for the time being i'm sticking to US releases only.
as for what its all worth, you might need that book mentioned above. the most expensive game there would be the turbo express, which is around $100, the most expensive tabletop would be mario's cement factory or popeye which often sell for over $60 ea. most of the games can be scored off ebay for under $20.

jump right in and grab as many as you can now, i know as a 2600 collector i wish i had gone after the carts in the early 90s. i made a point to go for NES completion this past year and easily gathered up all but 150 of the released games. the NES generation will hit their disposable income/nostalgia years any day now and the games will become harder to find and more expensive. laugh all you want but it happened to the atari 2600 and it will happen with the NES. as for the SNES theres a weird sort of logic there, non sports titles still command respectable prices in most stores, i'm not so sure we'll ever see these carts going the way of dirt cheap.
in boston NES carts go for about $3

dont let these ho-hums undersell the SGB, its a good find. you'll come to appreciate it if you ever get caught up in GB RGB game and want to save on batteries. in my experience its worth a bit more than $10, try 15-20 but anyways its not too common or useless. oh uh yeah..i also have an extra for trade, sigh my bias is exposed.

heh i love the beam feature, ever play with IR pong for the palm? i fthat were properly exploited i'm sure it could be put to great use in gaming. so yes beam me some good stuff next we meet up...which will be FEB.8th, NE gamers take note!
hows the 2600 game progressing?
-
how about some good RPGs? (palm hopefully). i'm wishing i had a color pocket pc since that seems to where all the developers are heading. perhaps when they come under $200.

palm users speak out!
what games have you discovered and enjoyed for your palm PDA? so far my favorite is Sim City. so what games do you like, any genre or type from arcade to RPG. oh and if possible, share the game..(freeware etc)
need something else to do while waiting around

the boston area goodwill mothership i so big and messy they cant be bothered to tag things so you just have to wait thru the line to find out what something will cost. it helps to bring my baby along.
-
i've played with a few of these programs and i have nothing against them except that i cant be bothered with all the bells and whistles. too many things to fill out and more info than i need most of the time. i go with a bare bones list on my palm pilot. i find lists of all carts released for a particular system online and then cut and paste it into palm's memo. as a i aquire the carts i rub them off the list, simple and effective. its very satisfying to see the list shrink down, of course i'm not too concerned about boxes, value, rarity so this fits my style.

i have about 30 coco games and a couple systems. i used one at school and used to like playing them at radio shack...not many collectors though, thats true of old comps in general.

the sweet looking sears video arcade II is my main machine since the neat LEDs remind me when i have left it on, besides my mom bought it for me (christmas 1983).

picked up one with the box a copuple years ago. neat to see how real the guns looked before they started putting orange tips on them.

i made my first trip to philly last year and spent a mere $14 on games, but brought home a suitcase full of trades. heres how it went for me, i was sort of expecting there to a formal trading time and place but that wasnt really the case. it was easy to walk around the floor and get bummed out by all the games i wanted being sold at high prices. a lot of the sellers frankly seemed worse than the greedy guys at flea markets, although some were very cool and open to trades. its a bit weird and akward talking up some of these folks, even if you know them thru the forums but its the only way to go, oh yeah wear a nametag! i had all of my so-so tradebait in a rolling carry-on suitcase which i toted around the floor and unzipped whenever somebody was open to trading. for a couple of hours i used a table (generously loaned to me by the event oragnizer himself) but did better when i took my stuff to other peoples tables. next year i plan on renting a table along with the rest of New England group, it will be a trade only zone, look for us. i'd also suggest posting here and on digital press prior to the meet to get some trades set up ahead of time.

i have two of these and not much use for them. they make 8 carts take up the space of 16. perhaps if i had a giant room i could have 50 or so of them locked together and then my whole collection would be a button push away, until then they act as dust catchers. they're about as rare as a pitfall II cart but not nearly as fun, unless you fill it with combats and hammer the buttons to launch them at your friends.
-
as side note one should mention phantasy star for the SMS, in real value terms this cart is 2cnd only to buster. its pretty rare period but the link to an ongoing legendary series makes it the most sought after game for the SMS.
11 US games left to find for me...

2 games for the R.O.B
gyromite
stack em up
that said its still a pretty useless thing.

here are a few things i've learned in setting up the boston boston meets
post to all the major game forums, that would include atariage (esp. the 2600 forum), digital press (classic gaming forum) and most importantly the newsgroup rec.games.video.classic. be sure post early and often, like a month ahead, then two weeks ahead and then the week of.
when you read these forums make a note of where everyone is from at the bottom of the posts and dont be afraid to email them, people get spam all the time, at least you're not selling anything. digital press also maintains a game collectors list that you can mine for contacts. another site to look at is the gametradezone, which has a search by location feature. also add something about the trademeet to your signature.
be open to all sorts of game collectors, at our meets we've had unusual swaps like a dreamcast for a 2600 and legos for coleco games, it doesnt have to be a classics only affair. also expect some people to have nothing to offer but cash for trade, thats good too as sooner or later they'll come back with some good stuff to trade. also try and play some games at the meet too, thats half the fun.
once you get the ball rolling a bit set up a mailing list and a website (our page http://www.gis.net/~bertulli/ ). you can never remind people of the meets too much, expect about half of those who say they are coming to show up, people always have a lot going on. it doesnt take a lot of people to make a good meet, once people get to know eachothers collecting tastes the trades really pick up.
good luck and be sure to post some pics
-
i give away my commons locally, if somebody makes it out to trademeet or gets in touch with me i can quite generous but i dont see mailing things to total strangers. i'd agree with previous posts that for the most part people should be able to find these things on their own if they want to become collectors...
-
i always make it a point to chat up any collectors i meet, i think i may have even scared a few as some people are quite meek. rather than being frusterated by competition i try and make it work for me by befriending them and getting them to our trademeets. i figure i know 80% of the hardcore collectors in the boston area by now and without exception they have all been really cool people. ok there was one exception, a guy from rgvc who i sold a console to, he was convinced that it wasnt safe to meet anywhere but in a crowded bar. he wouldnt even stay for a beer, it felt like a drug deal.
dont be discouraged by a few jerks, try posting here or in rgvc to meet collectors in your area, i've worked out a lot of great trades that way.

just felt like showing off my handheld collection

and thats why i only have 6 G&Ws, aside from lucky finds and badly listed ebay auctions i have no hope of getting far with that collection. i'd really like to have more but i top out around $30 for a game, its not unusual for game and watch auctions to break $500. makes me wonder how many loaded game collectors are out there?
