  1. the cart shell has a full legnth label frame on the front (screw side) and on the back side there is a 2.5 inch by 1/4 inch strip of horizontal raised lines. the sides have 5 thin rounded raised grip lines. unlike a lot of your cheap pirate carts it has the spring loaded chip protector on the bottom like an older atari cart.

i guess what really makes me wonder is why the NTSC label as i found it in the US.

  2. decided to take a closer look at a cart i've had for sometime. its a black shell, unlike any in my collection in terms of notches and and molds with no label or glue marks on it. on the cart there is small tag that reads NTSC and big screw, which i unscrewed. the game is defender, no doubt, atari on the screen but the chip has "defender ntsc" written on the sheilding in sharpie. so i'm guessing this is some sort of pirate thing but why bother to tag it ntsc?

    what up with this thing?

sure doesnt look like my atari lab loaner...

  3. i dont think video game collecting, as we know it, will ever go mainstream. there will be nostalgic reissues on new platforms and i predict playing old school games on advanced cell phones will be a fad for a while but thats it really. now we are seeing the NES generation come into their disposable income years, but collecting on that front isnt likely to reach the level that atari has achieved. atari, intellivision, coleco and the other classic systems represent an era unto itself, seperated from modern gaming by the 84 crash and the death of the arcade. nintendo and sega have carried on an unbroken chain of games for nearly 20 years now so theres no longing for sonic and mario because they never left.

sometimes i do see high school age kids at funco looking over the SNES piles but they dont have the gleam of collectors, outside of the RPG fans. as for the playstation, the collecting future looks bleak indeed, the games are already appearing in the thrifts...sadly though the CD and jewel case lacks the toughness of a plastic cart. shattered cases, scratched discs, missing manuals its not pretty, why bother when you can play the games on a emu? besides all that i think the modern eras obsession with always being cutting edge dates the early games badly.

  4. here we go, in case anybody else would like this

  6. the meet runs from about 4 to 830 pm. if you have lots of stuff to trade and can't make it get in touch with me anyways, i find/trade games year round.

you wouldnt be the guy who beat me to the gen. games in allston yesterday would you? had the feeling after that guy left i should have invited him to the trademeet...

oh and bcrps if you're reading this, any luck talking to the worldwide games guy?

  7. i think a finds forum is a dandy idea, as the hunt is often half the fun. i guess its back to the old collector vs. player thing. i spend almost as much time looking for games as i do playing them. i see this forum as rather specific to the 2600 so most of my finds would'nt fit in here and as for the market place forum that should be for buying and selling not bragging.

on the other hand the digital press site pretty much covers the hunter gatherer angle of classic gaming so you could just post your finds there where its expected. i wrote an article about game hunting which you can read here.

  10. i bought a PS2 (i have every system before that already) because it hosted my favorite series of games (medal of honor, shadowman, syphon filter). i've enjoyed those titles (waiting for SF4) but wanted to get another system, in the end it came down to $50, i went with the gamecube because i could get it and rouge leader for about $200. an xbox with halo would have run me $250, since they are taking a loss on the hardware anyways why not just get down to nintendos level, they have no real hope of beating the ps2 so why not pitch a fight for number 2?

also slightly off the thread topic i cant shake the impression of the xbox as the dreamcast2

  11. what you really need to do is just wait 4 months and buy the game used for a third off the new price. i hate the high prices too but i dont see any change in that coming soon. you're at this site because you're a classic gamer, i'm assuming, perhaps finding old games so cheaply has made it hard to pay full price?

  12. desribe the level a bit and i think i could help, or even fire up my psone...any excuse to revisit that game. i really enjoyed the whole series, including the latest on the PS2. the one level i never beat, the bonus "panzerknocker" level on MOH2...damn shepards

  13. this genre frusterates me, i really enjoy a game with a well thought out plot and a large world but i cant deal with the camera angle control issues. i tried to enjoy dino crisis and fear effect, but the shifting control made precise gameplay impossible. is it just me? i prefer a syphon filter or FPS type set up. why must all survival horror games be made this way?

  14. this dilema has been much debated at rgvc over the years and i have formed a strong opion on the matter which is as follows "i collect video games and i'm proud of it". from an early age i harbored a collecting bug and tried on various hobbies, comic books, tropical fish, hardback books, castle legos, old clocks and on and on. video games were always there and once i brought my childhood collection to my apartment i was off on a ride that hasnt stopped yet. before our move 2 years ago i had a nifty walk in closet set up as my gaming hole, now i have a gameroom proper that doubles as a guest room on rare occasions. i have 30plus systems, 1000's of games, hundreds of handhelds and four arcade sized machines...and all that other junk you pick up along the way.

what really got me going with collecting was meeting other collectors in my area, the back and forth trades and talk is great. i host trade meets 3 times a year and we all share our doubles in a greed free get together.

basically i look at it like this, i could a music snob, gearhead or sports nut but instead i game...no problem, by the way i keep it cheap by goign to the flea markets before ebay.

  15. damn...must i always be the lone defender of the game.com? the difference is the two models, the bigger model 1 is not back lit and is great on batt. use, the smaller model is backlit (i think).

you know there are actually somethings to like about this system and since they are so cheap on ebay right now you might want to check it out. i enjoyed dukenukem and mortal kombat. the williams arcade cart is more of mixed bag, the robotron is overwhelmingly hard, the joust doesnt feel right due to controls but the sinistar is amazing! game.com has an amazing sound chip so you'll hear the taunts loud and clear as you play it, the graphics are more than acceptable.

i've always suspected a lot of people hated this system because of those awful commercials with the screaming midget.

  16. i grew up in florida (daytona) and around christmas last year i was able to find a good deal of atari junk in the thrifts there. the trick seems to be going to the little church run ones, florida is a hotbed of wacky churches btw. here in the boston area i find next to nothing most of the time and when i do find stuff its more or less like that great pie chart. always be sure to poke around the CD shelf for turbo games and remember it never hurts to ask the staff if they have any games.

  17. if you want a master system send me an email, i'd be happy to sell you one for under $40 or trade. it'd be without the power supply but you could use any number of subs for that. i've been trying to complete my SMS collection for years and have picked up a lot of spare systems along the way.

  18. only pick up an adam if you're the type to build a museum of classic yet useless items. we tried to give one away at a past trademeet but nobody wanted the beast. besides its a huge waste of space.

yeah yeah i know about that donkey kong with extra levels..cant justify it.
