  1. Here's a suggestion that will surely be viewed as heresy around here -- for that kind of money, why not grab a PS1 and throw in some games like "Baldies," "Iron Soldier 3" and "Tempest X" if you want that "Jag" experience?
  2. That brings up an interesting point, doesn't it? Take a look at "Pac-Man," for example. I've always thought what made "Pac-Man" so rotten was the fact it was just so far removed from the arcade game that inspired it. Standing on its own, it would probably be regarded as merely a fair-to-middling game that might have a fan or two. In the case of "Reactor," however, how many people are familiar enough with the arcade game to compare it to the 2600 port? Everyone is familiar with the arcade version of "Pac-Man," but I suspect the same is not true of "Reactor."
  3. I tought Reactor was a good conversion... Regards! Rasty.- 843830[/snapback] I've never figured out why people like Reactor so much. Perhaps I played it too much in the arcades as a kid. The 2600 port just doesn't come close to the arcade version in terms of sound, visuals or anything else. Still, it seems to have its fans.
  4. It's easier to pick out the worst conversions: 1. Zaxxon 2. Pac-Man 3. Reactor 4. Donkey Kong 5. Donkey Kong Jr. See, those games all missed the versions in the arcades horribly. They just weren't nearly the same, but they have their fans, for sure. As for the best, that's kind of rough: 1. Joust 2. Space Invaders 3. Star Fire 4. Dig Dug 5. Moon Patrol But, there are some other great ones, too. "Frogger," although it flickered like crazy, was fantastic. Berzerk played like, well, "Berzerk," as did "Poll Position." Now, there were some that were wonderful translations, but who cares? The original games sucked, so we can't expect much. "Rock n' Rope" is a prime example. Wonderful translation of a mind-numblingly dull game.
  5. Gadzooks! And that's supposed to be fun? Kind of glad I stopped after the SegaCD
  6. Yep, and those trucks almost always wind up wandering off where you don't want them to, don't they? But, that's okay -- the computer's trucks do the same thing, and I always try to blast the right hell out of them when they do Hey, I was just glad to see a game finally utilize the fantastic Army Men concept well. What a game!
  7. Spawning? Never had that happen. When one wipes out the enemy bases, it's usually all over but the mopping up.
  8. I've got that one for the Gamecube, and you're right -- it's a great game. The Army Men series has been largely horrible, which is a shame because the concept is so damned cool. In a lot of ways, RTS reminds me of Warcraft in terms of resource management and such. I figured I would hate this title when I got it home, but I couldn't pass it up because the price was right. The only level I hate is the one in which you have to rescue villagers in that "Legoland" city. Other than that rotten level, the unique challenges in this game make it addictive as hell.
  9. Well, yes, but I'm not driving. I'm flying. I've got a layover in Memphis, but I'll be zooming above everything else
  10. Wow! The pickings are slim in Chattanooga, huh? Huntsville sounds promising. And, my company did rent that big ol' Buick for me
  11. In the same boat, for sure. Count me in the "I play games after the wife has gone to bed" crowd. Been doing that for years.
  12. Ooops. I mean, I'll be living out in the yard if I bring home any more consoles (or, so sayeth The Wife). Games for the stuff I already have are perfectly fine. I wouldn't want to portray honey bunny in a false light, would I?
  13. I'm heading to Chattanooga for business next month. Naturally, I want to search for a few games while I'm there. Any suggestions as to where I might look to find some?
  14. My wife puts up with my hobby and plays some games here and there on the 2600, 7800, Lynx, NES, PS1, Game Cube and Dreamcast. However, she's told me I'll be living out in the yard if I bring home any more games and jumped for joy the day I sold off the Jaguar and that portable (luggable?) Commodore 64.
  15. Sounds impressive, and expensive. Let me guess -- Microsoft plans to eat about $500,000 on every new unit so as to offer the thing at a price comparable to the PSP.
  16. I don't know why, but whenever someone suggests a handheld made by Microsoft, I think of something that weighs about 20 pounds and runs off a car battery.
  17. Seeing how I'm going to be heading to Tennessee in about a month on business, one of those portable 2600s would be nice Guess I'll have to stick with the Lynx until my wife sees things my way, however.
  18. Heh. Great stuff! I didn't even mind reading the first one again
  19. Love the 2600 still. And, here's one of the main reasons why -- it's a breeze to collect for. I'm more interested in playing the thing than just buying games for it, and the best games are often very common (i.e., cheap and easy to find).
  20. Well, look like some Nintendo fan's been messing around with http://www.ataritimes.com I swear, some people have too much damned time on their hands.
  21. Not really, when you consider how popular the Pirates were at the time with the World Series win, the "We are Family" stuff and all that. Pulling for Pittsburgh back then was rather like pulling for Boston today -- they were the former underdogs making good.
  22. If it's a joke, it's a damned good one. That's great! Man, I hope that thing's for real!
  23. Hey, that's a necessity with an N-Gage. Last I heard, the 10 people who own that thing are spread across the globe. It's hard to get them all in the same room, so they've got to stay connected through wireless if they want to play each other
