this is my Fast Food Pinned for HOM III
Wade

I am looking for a disassembly of Fast Food with comments.. has anyone made one or seen one around?
I am still trying to get the hang of assembly, coming from C. I am specifally looking for a way to stop the scrolling of the cutscene and ending graphics so they are centered or something, if anyone can help with that. I'm having trouble following along in the debugger and such.
I've been working on a sexy graphics hack that's nearing completion. Needs a few more touches but it will be great =) Next to go is the sound. I haven't looked into it yet but I hope it's nearly as easy to change as Pitfall...
Thanks in advance for any help =)
I posted a pinned version of this with everything I had found from when I was making Mad Max.
It is on Tim's site Salemfrost.
This can help in the areas of color and graphics at least, it is everything I had found, oh and a change to the score so it always displays all zeros at start and adds to the score with the remaining zeros yet to be reached at the left of the score.
Now Scott may be able to help you more he is the one that made Mad Max really shine!
The pinned version is for hack-o-matic III
That is a bit hacker not disassembly.

This games graphics are truly fantastic. Only problem is that it is really a challenge to play this one compared to the 7800 lightgun version. I wonder why this version wasn't released with light gun support like the 7800 version. Sentinel done quite well as a lightgun game for me. Anyone know if there are plans for this one to have lightgun support in the future?
If some type of light gun was sufficiently-readily available, I could build an interface that would allow the 2600 to do a good job of reading a light gun (given suitable software). Without some extra hardware, reading a light gun on a 2600 is dicey at best.
The only light gun I could think of would be the Sega Master System light gun, that has an Atari 9 pin D style plug on it already.
Oh wait I had an Atari GS before it burnt up, that had a light gun too that also had a 9 pin D plug.

Appreciation, I just wanted to thank everyone for their comments and complements while I was making this hack!

Thank you so much everyone it really means a lot to me, and I am so glad you like this, if there is any argument for hacks this it a good one, I'd way rather play this than the original game it came from! lol
But I did feel such a Pitfall feeling to playing the original game that I knew it had to be done.
I am deeply proud of this hack.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Thanks oh and for Pitfall II all you need to do is try to open it in HOM3.
Wade
Interesting Pitfall 2 is an odd-sized rom. I hadn't accounted for that. Now fixed.
-Jeff
Thanks again, yes I now remember why I tried to get into Pitfall two, so I could copy the bat for my Pitfall III hack.
I did a pretty good job just eyeballing it in the game though I think it looks a lot like the bat in Pitfall II.

The color searching it's an exact science, but it should help locate bit codes that could imply setting colors - it still could be data of course. There is still going to be an element of trial and error I'm afraid, but hopefully it helps speed up the process for your guys. Keep up the good hacking

Fixed opening and closing pit glitch!
I just fixed the glitch in the opening and closing pits, unfortunately I also had to change the opening screen back to home vision 83' for some reason when it says Pitfall III H. Jr. this affects the pits.
I don't know how or why I am not a programmer it just does.
So that is changed back the game is more important than the words, so it is changed and now works with out any glitch in the opening and closing pits.
Nukey would probably know why he is a programmer he would probably know why the screen jumps every once in a while and how to turn the music off the right way with no soft static click sounds every once in a while.
Anyway I did my best I if I can fix the ROM any more in the future I will post the update.
Enjoy!

One more update. Now when you compare roms you can create patch, or diff, files that then can be applied later. You can use this to track changes and roll back in case you screw something up. These are compressed to save space. The RFL files are now compressed as well to save space. Of course existing, non compressed, RFL files will still work.
-Jeff
This is just what I need now because I did screw something up in Pitfall III Harry jr. something with the opening and closing pits. But I am more excited over the advanced color search function does it look for where colors are stored like in disassemble but for bit hackers to understand?
Thanks again

Here is the latest version (3.013) with some new features and bug fixes.
What's new
1. You can nable an option so that hovering over the hex code will give you the ASCII text equivilant
2. You can bring up a text editor
3. Search for text strings
4. Advanced search for helping locate colors
5. Multiselect for bulk bookmarking or highlighting
6. Highlights on hex codes will be saved to the .RFL. This shouldn't break older RFL files, but older versions of hackomatic won't read the new RFLs that contain highlight information.
What's fixed :!:
1. Undo wasn't possible when pasting
2. Unfiltering by bookmarks would generate an error if the notes in a row were empty
I have no idea what I might have potentially broke by introducing the newer features. Let me know if you find anything.
-Jeff
"Advanced search for helping locate colors!" oh Jeff Thank you thank you thank you!!!! No more 100's of attempts of changing bits to find out if it is a color or important game data! YEAH!!!!!!!!
Like with Pitfall III I knew the gators were green but which one I tried 20 different greens and each of the numbers were like in the game 20 to 30 different times so right there that is over 200 attempts before I found the color, what a hack that is, wow colors anyplace in that ROM not all grouped like I am used to finding. lol
The only thing I did notice was I tried a while back to see if I could hack Pitfall II that gives some kind of error???
Wade
-
Noted there is an error I caused in the opening and closing pits I will fix that and change it back so the error is gone. I need to download one of my old versions and compare where I accidentally must have missed changing back a test I did, literally 100's of changes and test one of them I missed I guess.
It will be fixed soon!

Pitfall III Harry Jr. is here.
Harry Jr. is trying to get out of the jungle he has many of the same problems to deal with as his Father Pitfall Harry.
There are Alligators but this time they swim and yes at later levels Harry Jr. must jump on their heads to get across chasms just like his Father did but Harry Jr. must have much more precise timing as one the alligators swim and number two they are not on the same level as Harry Jr. they swim in the dangerous swift flowing stream below him. There are rolling logs to jump over again but a few new characters to deal with charging apes! Also docile swimming turtles these Harry Jr. can jump on safely to get across chasms. Also back is the Bat his father Harry had to face in Pitfall II.
Will Harry Jr. ever get out of the jungle, I don't think so.
The game plays as long as you want to play it, you have unlimited lives and no timer except the timer for points for each screen, each screen is the challenge if you want to play until you get out of the jungle I don't think that is possible I think the game never ends, I don't know? I made it to over 50,000 before turning it off, it is a highly addictive game I must say though probably my most addictive hack yet.
It is also the hardest hack I have finished yet, after crashing the ROM 100's of times to find the last colors I wanted to change I found them finely!
If any more experienced hackers would like to smooth out a few kinks left in it I would be happy to see this game get as good as it possibly can, right now it is as good as I can get it with my hacking abilities.
Enjoy

Nonono, I mean the other way around -- taking the Atari 2600 Pac-Man and hacking that to make it a just-as-sucky Ms. Pac-Man.

Ohhhhhhhhhh
"to make it a just-as-sucky Ms. Pac-Man.
"I like your description!
No I don't think anyone ever did that.
Wade

I brought this idea up to Inky, who suggested I check the 2600 Hacks section to see if this had been done (he thought it had been done), but I didn't see it...
Anyhoo....my idea: hacking Pac-Man into Ms. Pac-Man --- as if it had been programmed by Tod Frye.
Dig:
- It would be easy to tell that Ms. Pac-Man is Ms. Pac-Man because she looks just like Pac-Man....except she's pink.
- Instead of one lousy escape tunnel on the top and bottom, have....are you ready?.....TWO...on the top and bottom!
- No more of that boring old rectangular "vitamin" that sits there under the ghosts' hideout! Now....the vitamin MOVES around the hideout!
- Sick of playing the same orange-and-blue maze over and over? Well, kiss that goodbye -- after you clear the second, fifth, and ninth mazes -- they CHANGE COLORS!
Of course, due to technical limitations, we would have to put up with this:
- In the original arcade game, when Ms. Pac-Man gets chomped by a monster, she spins around. Well, because limitations of the 2600 prevent Ms. Pac-Man from spinning, when she "spins" she only faces left and right.
- The Atari 2600 just doesn't have the power to play a full-length startup theme, so to compensate, there's a shorter, four-note musical sequence not just at the beginning of the game, but also before every life!
- Unfortunately, as was proven by Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man, the Atari just doesn't have enough processing power to have the intermissions. But almost as good -- every few mazes you clear, the screen will blink....TWICE!
Now.....all I have to do is learn how to hack.

Oh...and to prevent confusion between this and the official Atari Ms. Pac-Man, I'd rename it "Ms. Fry" -- in honor of both Tod Frye and my senior-year high school English teacher.

This does exist someone did turn Ms Pac-Man into Pac Man I downloaded it a long time ago think it was called Mr Pac-Man if I remember? I have it in my emulator Oh Rob Kuda I think was the one that made this.

If that isn't hard enough photo two shows now the same challenge with charging apes added, Now I must jump over the ape avoid the bat jump down on the gator jump back off the gator avoiding the apes and the bat to make it across the screen.
I reached that stage at around 2,3000 pts. After about 50 tries, I gave up. If there was to be an end to this hack, this stage is it. That's because even if I happened to pass that stage, I don't expect to see anything cool. Just more insane music.

You too!!!! That is where I stopped at too!!!!!
I am sure it must be possible but wow!!!!!
Believe it or not that is actually playing those nursery rhymes from the original game, it is just going through some really messed up filter of some kind I stumbled on trying to find the color for the logs and apes to change to brown.
I changed it and thought well I like that better than the nursery rhymes.
Wade
It is not imposible I made it way past that today!

New Up Date No Music!!!
Wade
PS still need to find the gator color to change, I spent many hours looking today all I can say is it is not these colors.
CE, DD, BA, BB, BC, BD, B9, B8, B7, B6, So I need to keep looking.
PS I just now noticed I messed up the date 10-24-7 hahahaha sorry next will be this years date.

This game progressively gets harder the longer you play, I had taken these two photos to show just how hard it gets.
The first photo
Ohhhh YEAH that is right for me to get across that chasm I must jump down on the swimming alligators while avoiding jumping into the bat also my timing must be perfect so that the gator is closing it's mouth just before I land. I can not wait until it closes it's mouth like in Pitfall I must jump while it's mouth is open still, then I must jump back off quickly before it opens it's mouth again onto the other ledge.
If that isn't hard enough photo two shows now the same challenge with charging apes added, Now I must jump over the ape avoid the bat jump down on the gator jump back off the gator avoiding the apes and the bat to make it across the screen.
Sometimes it seems near impossible to get across, high expert level stuff this gets to be.
I do need to point out there does seem no end to this game and unfortunately for me to add an end I would need to be a better hacker.
I am just a simple bit hacker.
Wade
PS To me the point of the game is not so much in the full game but each challenge to successfully complete, why did Harry cross the screen, to get to the other side. That is it, it is the challenges them selves the overall game has no point, so do what I do live in the now moment enjoy each challenge until you get tired of playing and turn it off until you want to play it again.
Wade

I've been playing this for about 15 minutes, and I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do!
I ended up turning it off because I was expecting to get to an endpoint, or at least get a gold bar or something.
It is an interesting idea for a hack. And you got rid of the original music which helps. I also got a kick out of jumping on a turtle and using him to get back on the main level. If I didn't find that, then I'd be bored.

Are the apes from "Sky Skipper"? Part of me thinks that scorpions would be better, but the apes are cool.
Well the apes are left over from the original game, no there seems no end to the game really. Each screen is the challenge. I made it to a level where you jump down on a gator head as he closes his mouth to get across, timing is critical, but the next level the apes are charging at you and you have to still jump down on a gator head I'll show what I mean in a special post
I play it until I feel like turning it off too, I would like to see a very experienced hacker make this game shine and put in a time limit or limited lives, maybe get rid of the music all together. hehe
Wade
-
I'd like it if you could make it where he only jumps to maximum height if the jump button is held down. And if you lowered the pitch on the jumping sound.
I hope the music is just temporary... the original was better, although it was never even tolerable, heh. I'd like something simple, too much melody gets annoying in these games. A simple jungle beat, or some suspenseful sounds with low volume whitenoise crashing type stuff.
Good job so far, keep it up, sir
That is way beyond my hacking ability, I don't know assembly programming. I'll let you in how I changed the music, I was searching for the colors of the gators and turtles I changed what I thought cloud be the color byte, it turned out to be critical to the music.
I wish I could find how to turn off the music I may yet stumble on that. It took me two hours of searching to find the color for the logs and apes.
The new music sounds similar to Malagai I think.
I like it better than the nursery rhymes.
But the game gets very challenging way harder than Pitfall.
I took two pictures at 20000 points.
The game gets progressively harder each screen.
I am going to hack this the best I can, I do know it could be so much better with a more experienced hacker. It is well worth the effort I believe because it is very close to pitfall really many of the exact same elements and challenges and at the same time progressive dificulty.
Wade
-
Nice start.
The apes are cool. I would not change them. After all, Harry is a world traveler. He comes across all different kinds of animals in his journeys. The music does have to change though. Otherwise, keep the game the same, put a diaper on Harry, and call it Pitfall III: The Preschool Years. Here is my newest up date!
Logs and Apes are now Brown
Nursery Rhyme songs are OUTA HERE!!!

New cool music!
I still need find the color for the gators and turtles though.
I had been thinking of calling it something like Pitfall Harry Jr. or Pitfall Jr. since Harry is three pixels shorter in this game.
Enjoy!!!!!

Well everyone my Pitfall III hack is very much on the way and looking pretty good so far!

I am hacking Lily Adventure into Pitfall III!
Wade
-
I have been thinking of hacking Lily Adventure into a new Pit Fall, maybe calling it Pit Fall III?
I found Lily her feet do move so I know it animates at least two frames, So I only found so far one frame of her and I think I found her color too. I also found the Teddy bears and the turtles and that weird worm or plant thing too.
But if there is no way to make it have limited lives and limited time I may lose interest.
Besides I would like to get rid of that music too or change it if I could.
Just letting you in on what I'm tossing around in my mind.
It will be a big hack maybe bigger then my Tom Boy hack?
Wade

A few pictures and my first changes to turn Lily Adventure into Pitfall III
Wade

PS. Please let me know what you think, should I continue this hack or drop it, I don't think there is a way to lose in this, yes you do start back at the beginning of the screen you are on if you lose a man, but you seem to have an infinite supply? So please let me know?
New changes changed the bird into a bat like in Pitfall II
Changed those things that looked like giant slugs into rolling logs like in Pitfall
Changed the Alligators to look much more like in Pitfall
At this time I can not find anymore colors other than Pitfall Harry I want to change the logs to brown.
I may change those apes into Scorpions don't know I do like the apes though.
Enjoy.

More Hacks, Please!
in Atari 2600 Hacks
Posted · Edited by Pac Munchkin
You are right Shawn, I made some very good hacks myself and if I hadn't made them they wouldn't exist, I know you have too. People should take our example and learn to hack, after all one of the best and easiest hacking tools around is Hack-O-Matic III; I haven't been around in a while maybe now it is even better or hack-o-matic IV maybe???
Anyway this message is for everyone don't be afraid to try hacking, the worse you could do is mess up a copy of a ROM no big deal copy another and try again if you do.
Sincerely
Wade
Pit Fall III
Extreme Monster Tag
Pac Munchkin
Hot Pac'em
Hot Munchkin
ET's Candy Bars
Tank Patrol
Tarsan's Rescue Mission
Mad Max co hacked with Scott Dayton
Then some of the smaller fixed hacks I did like giving Fat Albert some color to make him look better, fixing the lips and burgers in Fast Food so they are pink instead of purple and look a little better.
Maybe a few I forgot as well, go ahead give hacking a try.
