LOL yes after I played it I found it was River Raid, it is a real good hack of River Raid though very good!

Hmmm This sounds interesting. Hopefully I will remember to give it a go later today when I get home.
The only thing that keeps me from downloading this is I don't like the idea of a bomb game, having my computer crash and lose all my information just because I lost a game? That is why I use virus protection so I don't think I want to do that on purpose. lol

Wow this looks really good, I can for the life of me figure out what it is a hack of at least not from these pictures.
I can't wait to give it a try!
Cool!

Ahhhhhhh :-( I am missing it for some reason I get a screen that says Defender arcade then the scaner and one person at the bottom, no mountains no enemies and no defender ship. as I press the button I can hear it shooting and see it on the scaner but nowhere else. :-(
Maybe it is something to do with Stella X?
As Zach said, you need to hit 'tab', click on 'Game Properties', then change the 'Type' dropdown to "F8SC". Click 'Ok', restart the game, and you should be fine.
Thank you very much, but since I am using an old version of Stella X because the new version runs way too slow on my computer, I don't understand that Pentium III 902 HMz and 384MB ram on this laptop. oh well maybe it uses a lot of memory my memory is very taxed most of the time, when I am on here (the net) I am runing at 100% memory usage.
I guess I'll use Z26 I may even switch to Z26 but if I do I will be changing the colors of my hacks to look good on Z26, they look lousy on Z26 compared to on Stella where they are beautiful hacks!
Thanks for the help again

I played it and love it, I think it is a great hack! and perfect job on mario I think he looks just like from Donkey Kong! Donkey Kong looks very good too, a little tall but very good. The snap jaws didn't they look a little more like aligators? Maybe I am thinking of a version like Colecovision version?
Don't know I'll need check on that.
I did come up with this idea the Thwumps maybe could be DK jrs. coming down almost like neo's Mario vs Ape if he would let you use that idea.
He is a good guy I believe he would but it is always nice to ask.
Wade
PS But I do love it just as it is also!

I could have swore I have Pong on a cartridge, the cartridge was called pong, now I have to dig through all my old cartridges I am almost positive I have a cartridge called pong. It was one of the very first cartridges bought for me.
I remember I recieved my Arati VCS (Sears Video Arcade) the first games I had were Pong Sports, Target Fun two of those since it came with one also as a pack in cartridge. Gun Slingers, Space Combat and Outer Space and Tank Plus.
Those were my very first games.

Love it your hacks keep geting better and better, can't wait to try this final version!

Wow this was a hack I had been thinking of doing but feared I could not do it justice , I was going to try hacking up from the original Defender, changing the flying saucers to aliens like defender arcade has and changing the city line to the mountain line like arcade defender. What a brilliant idea hacking down from Defender Star Gate, now after seeing this I know i would not have done it justice trying to make defender better just would not cut it compared to what you are doing using Star Gate.
It is looking really good at least as I can see from these pictures, can't wait to give it a run!

I like the black lable best!
The hit indicator maybe on Z26 looks red but on Stella looks like light violet or hot pink.
So I have to wonder how it would look on a real Atari VCS.
Wade
Looks like we will have to have 2 seperate cart editions.
I am leaning toward the sand label version.Jetset tested it on a real Atari 2600.
Looks close enough to me.
oh wow I had no idea the desert sand color would look so GREEN on a real Atari, 020D is play field since you can actually test it on a real Atari could you adjust it to the desert sand color I tried to get. On Stella it looks sand color but it is plain to see on Atari it looks very green.
The red does come out looking good!
If it is too late for that adjustment I understand.
Thanks so much for all the work you put into this I am very glad I shared it with you.

Neo man I honestly had no idea this hack existed, great minds think alike!!!

Something felt so fimilar about Donkey Kong Escapes, now I know why! lol
I actually have a version different from this one, mine has two levels of barels and at the bottom some kind of skellton things come down.
I'll download your newest version.

I wanted to let everyone know the progress on WC Munchkin my cross system hack of KC Munchkin to 8K Pac Man.
It is looking nice and has proper colors thanks to Nukey Shaw.
it is a work in progress I need change the tital screen, the eyes also the title at the bottom of the screen I think that is it but I may think of more.
Enjoy,
Wade
UP Date, I still need find that intro screen once i find that I can finish this hack.
I keep trying over an over to up load the update i may give up for now.
The eyes I changed to eyes similar to KC munchkin, I made frowns instead of the flashing legs and eyes since I can't do a flash between the two like inKC and it does not look good with just the three dots if there is no flashing change.
I changed the words at the bottom of the screen.

Wow I love this hack! Great Job!!
It does look and feel like it could be a sequal to Donkey Kong series of games.
Great Work!

I'm likin' it.
Is the problem with the man in the game the inability to make him multicolor? Because if so you could always use the O2 man instead.
No the problem is the Block is not a sprite as Fearalstorm pointed out it is the VCS system ball so it can not be changed.
To tell you the truth I am much more used to the Commodore 64 Spirites and Character graphics that was it everything was changeable. But the Atari VCS has Spirites which I understand very well, but also a "Ball" or "Missiles" these are not sprites but built into the VCS they will always look like what they are there is no changing them.
Then there are player graphics too still not sure on those unless another word for sprites?
So ever though it is a very early game that seems it should be a snap to hack, it is not because it uses the ball graphic built into the VCS to represent the "man"
No wonder why better hackers than I never changed much in that game, it is pretty limited what can be changed.
So sorry to say that is it I can't change the block into a running man like I thought I could.
It is not to say impossible someone with programming skills could do it changing the programming of the game all around But I am just a graphics hacker.
Wade
PS I am glad you like my dragon, the head I did right from dragonfire I just turned every bit at a 90 degree angle, there wasn't much room for the body to be exact like I did for the head so I tried my best to make it look as much like the dragonfire body as I could.

My idea is:
Couldn't the TIA color chart be assigned to Hack-O-Matic II?
Than you could than easily see the colors for the sprites you wanted to change and simply alter the hex value to do so. I also though maybe if possible their could be two rows of hex values and the second row could scroll independently so you could match up the colors with the sprites you wanted to change.
I know a lot of times that a sprite is only one color and for example if that color is black $00 could appear a hundred times, so this wouldn't be perfect but if you were changing a sprite like Mario in Donkey Kong I would think this would work very well.
The source code for HOM 2 can be found here:
Wow I really like your idea, so much better than going to Stella to Colour Test finding the color you want then looking it up in binary to fill out the byte that stores the color in Bit Hacker or Hack-O-Matic.
Even better would be if it had the binary next to each color or better yet if you could highlight the byte to change then click on the color and it fills out the byte with the proper binary bits automatically!

It might not be 100% accurate though, I saw just recently there is a huge difference in colors between emulators, like my game "ET's Candy Bars" looks great in Stella but on Z26 looks bad.
Cool Idea

If you're using Stella, you can turn on and off the different display elements of a game using Alt+one of the bottom row of letter keys. Thanks that is good to know for the future.

I have a great idea how to take Hack-o-matic II to the next level but I need someone with programming ability so if their are any hackers on here with knowledge of BASIC please contact me.
I had Hack-O-Matic II for maybe 2 or 3 days I really liked it but felt it needed more, then I found Bit Hacker, Bit Hacker does things I wished Hack-O-Matic II did. Example I can scroll with the wheel of my mouse in Bit Hacker, I can reverse the order of the bytes from ascending to descending, this makes it easy to see the sprites right side up.
I can stretch the bits so they are easier to see and work on. One draw back that I like in Hack-O-Matic II more is the numbers are much easier to read the addresses, in Bit Hacker they get cut off at the edge for some reason and are small I wish they could be bigger to see better and not cut off at the edge of course.
There is one thing I would love to see, an ability to load two ROMs and compare them highlighting the differences. This would eliminate a need to convert bin to txt to compare in a text editor that compares two files and highlights differences.
Try Bit Hacker it may be what you are looking for.

Can anyone explain what all is involved in hacking play fields? How do you locate the play field in the disassembly or on hack-o-matic 2 and make changes?
Thanks, Tim
I found that there are really two play fields. The appearance one we see and the math one the computer sees. I tried changing the maze in Alien it only changed the appearance all sprites still followed the old maze like nothing was changed at all. So I think this requires some assembly programming to actually make play fields that are changed in looks as well as function.
Wade
At this point I am only interested in cosmetic changes for a few game ideas I have
Oh that is easy cosmetic changes, like I made the Alien Maze look more like Pac Man maze. Here is what I do with Bit Hacker. I find what looks like the play field then I make a small change maybe add or delete 4 bits and I save it and play it to see what I changed where it appears, a lot of times everything is upside down so switch views from ascending to descending in the bit hacker. this way it will be right side up, easier to find.
Another thing is since it is only 8 bits across you are going to see all of the screen in that little 8 bit wide line so you might see first the right side then middle then left or Bottom Middle and Top this is very confusing but you can find everything if you take it slow and keep testing. if you mess something up change it back if you lose it then you need to do showgfx for the hack version you messed up and the original, and get a text file compare program to compare the two files and find where you messed up to change it back. I got mine free at down load.com
Hope this helps!

Doesn't the old Stella have pretty inaccurate sound though. The new one really really improved on that

I don't know I have StellaX 1.4.1
It seems correct on the sound, but then again I don't have it hooked up side by side with my old Atari on a TV either.
I am just going from memory, ahhh fond memories of my teen years the 80's I'd play Atari hours and hours I even have a whole bunch of patches I earned getting the highest scores you could get on Activision's games.
????????????????
Any remember that?
Wade
I remember I did that once with Demon Attack it just blanked out on meI remember I was excited saying YEAH I just beat the game it has no more I am too good for it it can't give me any more I beat it!!!!!!

Also have a medal for Gorf too.

It's probaly a little more challenging than that, since the Adventure block is the 2600 system "ball", and not a standard player sprite with easily changeable graphics.
It may be possible to replace the ball with a player, but that would probably require modifications (at least) to the display kernel of the game, not to mention worsen the flicker that happens when more than two objects are onscreen at once.
(lookit me, talkin' like I know sumthin!
)OH WOW I thought for such a simple game it should be an easy hack!
I am really showing I am a beginner hacker here I guess!
What about the dragon is that a sprite? I know if I change it over to dragonfire dragon it will be vertical not sideways because of the orignal how it was designed.
Thanks Feralstorm for just saving me a lot of headachs wondering where on earth that block spirite is to change!!!!!!!!

Wade
I just did this up quick the head is from dragonfire the body is based on dragonfire, as well as the tail, there wasn't a lot of room to work on getting it just like the dragonfire dragon but it is close.
Wade
Afrter I just uploaded this I had a better idea for dead dragon, instead of just twisting the head I will do the whole front of the body! that should be cool!
Ok switched rom this has the body twist.
