  1. Connecting a VGA monitor: the info is on your site Matthias: am I likely to get a stable, alright-looking image with software not coded specifically for VGA (refreshrate etc)? I'm I'm not I won't bother The Jag I use most often is region-switched, the other is just hooked up to the big tv for playing new games for the first time Mind you, using the one monitor and a VGA switchbox would be nice BTW, you asked a little while ago in a different thread (can't remember which) whether you released your splitscreen 2-player JagMania...no! *wants 2-player support* Stone

    Jaguar Page 1

Lol, never knew how much stuff was around on AA http://www.atariage.com/catalog_overview.h...ml?CatalogID=69 is the one I meant. A very nice one overall, lots of glossy pages, and it reviews quite a lot of the games I don't have, and while they are universally glowing (would I expect otherwise? not even Atari is stupid enough to slag off their own games ) they have some nice piccies for me to stare at, as well as some brilliant taglines. 'be a part of the HUMAN RACE: maim someone' and 'No Family. No Friends. No Problem' stick in the memory, for some reason Stone
  3. Remeber: screenshots don't show framerate. At the risk of starting another argument, HoverStrike looked like a great idea in the glossy magazines Mind you, Club Drive always looked crap Stone

    Jaguar Page 1

I have some advertising showing SW2K...*gets it out* The front says 'Over 50 New 64-bit Games Previewed!!' with the standard Jag+CD pic, and inside it says 'This is just the beginning for the Jaguar 64-Bit system. There are a ton of new games on the way for '94 and '95 designed to harnass the Jagaur's insane power. A power that's rapidly making other video games history' Heh. Yeah, right Inside, there are full-page reviews/adverts of AvP, Doom, IS, KasNin, and T2K, with half-page features on Wolf3D, Club Drive and Checkered Flag, with smaller things on Dragon, HoverStrike, Raiden, DinoDudes and Crescent Galaxy, Zool2, Bubsy, Cybermorph, Val D'Isére, Battlemorph, Blue Lightning, SW2K, BSF, Cannon Fodder, DD5, Rayman, Theme Park, Flashback, Troy Aikman, Syndicate and 'Ultra Vortex'. There's a free game offer if you mail the barcode from your Jag system (DinoDudes/Raiden/McFur). On the back is the heading 'Coming in 1995' with the following list: Demolition Man (CD) Charles Barkley Basketball Creature Shock (CD) Highlander (CD) BHH (CD) Fight For Life Hardball III Burnout [later Super Burnout] Tiny Toons Rage Rally [later PDR] Robinson's Requiem (CD) Dactyl Joust Jack Nicklaus Cyber Golf (CD) Redemption (CD) Flip Out Ruiner Pinball --------------- Dragon's Lair (CD) / ReadySoft Arena Football / V Real BattleWheels / Beyond Games Zodiac Fighters / V Real [wasn't this later Thea Realm Fighters?] White Men Can't Jump / Trimark Assault / MidNite Entertainment Dungeon Depths / MidNite Entertainment Sensible Soccer / Telegames Starbattle / 4-Play [any guesses? ] Graham Gooch Cricket / Telegames James Pond 3 / Telegames Soccer Kid / Ocean of America Air Cars / MidNite Entertainment That's it...interesting how few of those games ever saw the light of day in production. 12 of 30 in fact If anyone's interested in the pictures, I can scan this and post it. There's a nice advert for the VR Headset too - 'Coming Soon' apparently, hehe! Interesting anyway...clearly Atari's marketing budget stretched to making a few of these glossy things Stone
  5. Oh, right I thought you were using my method of attaching 20mil-centred things to stripboard: just bend the legs apart slightly and then wedge the board down the middle, between the two rows of pins. Since the pins line up with the tracks on the bottom, you can then solder to all the tracks on that side, and just use wire and some unused tracks for the top side. That way the board sticks out the back, with no clearance problem at all. I thought that was what you used, didn't see the board corners until just now Stone
  6. Still does... Keep playing until you get a couple of powers, it improves immensely. Choppy isn't a word I would ever use to describe UV...how do you mean? Always seemed very smooth to me, even in turbo mode. Stone
  7. There's a couple of betas I know about at a status in between BI/WN and PZ... Stone
  8. Put it this way: CDRW disks *shouldn't* work on the Jag. It all depends on the process used to create them, type of dye used etc. Normally with CDs there's a difference in reflectivity between the pits and blanks, and this difference is not normally so pronounced with CDRW disks due to the way they're made (and the fact that we're limited by the chemical properties of dyes we've discovered so far). I'd guess you used a newer kind of disk with a more pronouced difference between states. I wouldn't use CDRWs for permanent backups though; not only are they more expensive, but the lasers in drives that don't support them (JagCD) are stronger and may erase the disk with time. Bad. Mind you, it's a silly hour in the morning, and I'm tired and said that from memory, so feel free to correct me if I'm talking crap Speaking of which, a mate of mine reported a very early-model Discman blistering the surface of his CDs...produces visible damage, apparently. Anyone know if this is possible, or should I hit him for being silly? Thanks Stone
  9. Crude jokes? Me? Hehehehehe To be fair, it would be nice if there was another word for it, but hey, we have to work with what we're given, right? Aluminium is a nice metal, but I wish it was easier for the hobbyist to get items anodised. For some reason the school won't let me dunk stuff in a huge lead tank filled with acid and pass high currents through it I made a lovely case for my salvage PC (fished out of a school skip) but it would be much nicer in black In fact it'd be nicer in any finish other than 'scratched all to hell because nobody realises dumping heavy sharp things in the pile of sheet metal is stupid'. Ah well Stone
  10. Yes, that's what I was thinking I have some spare PCB-mount RCA jacks, so I'll create something when I get around to it As for the Jag being in danger...put some epoxy on the top and bottom of the connector to a depth of about 4-5mm, then when it's dry carve/Dremel out the 'guidelines' that are moulded into the bottom shell of the Jag's expansion ports. Will stop you putting it in upside down Stone
  11. Derek: OK, thanks for the clarification. Tyrant, Paulo: I have quite a bit (about 10-15m) of shielded 9-core cable I bought by mistake for BJL cables (they need 11 wires...d'oh!) At some stage I'll buy some RJ-45 connectors and make an extra-long one to see if it makes a difference (grounding at both ends, natch). Since there's only 4 wires used in the JagLink I can have all 4 as twisted-pair with GND, with the extra wire and the shield as GND too. Should go quite far...I hope Stone
  12. Oh my word, these people are mad Just a thought: since there is no end-stop on the rotary control, why do you need an indicator bar on the knob? Do they just come that way? For £100 you could at least file the line off and repaint it Stone
  13. Look at Matthias Domin's site, at http://home.t-online.de/home/Matthias.Domi...rt.htm#CARTSLOT Connecting together pins 35 and 35 on side B (that's the side closest to the pad ports) with a small piece of wire will allow the Jag to power up. You should get the red 'help! what do I do now!' screen, with the Jag logo on it - enough to show you it's working. If you're going to do this, make sure you double-check your counting, connecting either pin to VCC (that's 5V) would almost certainly be bad BTW, I will take no responsibility for anything you may break after foolishly listening to me Stone
  14. Derek: When you say you daisy-chain the Jags with a JagLink2+, do you plug one of the original JagLink boxes into each of the end Jags and then join them both to the third via the hub? Other than needing another cable, that sounds great On a slightly-related note, does anyone know what the maximum length of cable that can be used with the Jaglink is? I'm too lazy to move a TV downstairs when I want to play 2-player Stone
  15. There was an official Atari project of this kind designed to run MPEG video (VideoCDs, iirc) as well as a limited amount of other stuff. Glenn has all the info. It would be easily within the Jag's capabilities, but you'd need some serious software to make it work, added to which you'd probably need to rewrite the JagCD firmware to support ISO9660 / derivatives. Not a trivial project Stone
  16. Yes. Be prepared to get your fingers burned, a lot Also bear in mind that if you solder the top and bottom rows of a 25-pin DSUB connector together by accident, it's easier to cut the end off the cable and try again than it is to remove the excess solder. Trust me on this So it is. Knew I saw it before somewhere The one I was thinking of was this: Slightly lower res, same idea Stone
  17. You won't regret buying UV - it's astonishingly good. Nice-quality gfx (the character select screen is particularly impressive), speedy animation and good music too. One of my fave cart games. My top 5 would be: Rayman (Still the best cart game out there...by miles!) T2K, which rocks even though I suck at it UV PDR - I love driving games, especially this kind, and this one is well written and great fun. Kinda like MicroMachines in normal scale Doom - Great memories, nice implementation. Get these and you will be a happy bunny I-WAR, Flashback and NBA JAM just missed the list. I'm still looking to get my hands on Super Burnout, Cannon Fodder and Zero 5, which are all supposed to be good, and I'm still on the lookout for a copy of Worms, which rocks whatever platform it's on, just by default Personally I wouldn't suggest getting a JagCD for a while, it's a big investment considering there are only a few games out for it (excluding new titles, which aren't exactly numerous right now ). VidGrid and Battlemorph are very good though, and I still find Blue Lightning fun, whatever the critics say. Primal Rage is also excellent, but good luck finding that Sounds like you have the makings of a great collection - keep it up! Does anyone think I missed anything cart-wise? I don't have all that many cart games, so feel free to chime in Stone
  18. You could buy / trade one of mine off me Alternatively, make your own, schematics are freely available, like AtariOwl said. AtariOwl: that owl logo looks familiar...didn't I see it on a BBC model B computer once? Stone
  19. To make that worth my while you'd have to pay me what I paid for it, which I can GUARANTEE you wouldn't want to do Trading gives me more physical stuff...stuff is always good Stone
  20. I already have Doom twice, and shrinkwrap means little to me since I'm gonna be playing them anyhow Anything decent and of roughly the same value, basically. 2 reasonable games or 3 crap ones would do I guess. I feel I should get *some* value out of it since I paid top dollar for it when I got it and don't want to lose out Being UK, US 'football' doesn't exactly float my boat, so I'll stick clear of Troy Aikman Or a procontroller... Like I said, just send me a big list of everything you'd be willing to trade and we can probably thrash something out. Stone
  21. He wrote a CD bypass program to load the demo CD of Caves of Fear, nothing more. He may know something about it anyway though His email address is out there somewhere; why don't you ask him? Stone
  22. I thought the way to do it would be to have a 2D height map (like DOOM, btw), placing a voxel at each point, at height set for that location. With a high enough resolution this would appear as a 'sheet' that is 'folded' into the contours specified. There is no 'dirt' under the landscape, as the landscape is just a surface. You have problems if you fall off the edge of the sheet though (this can happen in Quake) You also have problems if your clipping code is buggy; say you drive a vehicle over the top of a big hill, then fall through the air and hit the dirt on the other side. If part of the player goes *through* the voxel-based surface, then they'll either get stuck or be able to view the underside of the sheet, which would be bad Maybe that's what you said, my 3D knowledge is still at vector transformations so I'll shut up now Stone
  23. I'll trade my mint, complete one (no shrinkwrap, but hey) for whatever. Private-message me what you have lying around and I'm sure we can cut a deal Game includes cart, cart 'baggy', manual, 3 overlays and a nice-condition box. Personally I just didn't like AvP, not to my taste at all. Better for someone else to get some joy out of it re UV: I loved it, especially the jaw-dropping gfx, but the lack of a combo system is a shame. Guess I just want a port of Killer Instinct on ye Jaggy Tyrant: I don't know, PWADs would be good enough for me...there was one AMAZING one I played a while back in a subway station...even had 'Take the A-Train' playing in the background God I loved playing that multiplayer. Mind you, Heretic on the Jag would be amazing...turning people into chickens rocked Stone
  24. There is a (user-produced) manual for Charles Barkley, I think Glenn Bruner put it together. Look around, it definitely exists. Stone
  25. Yes. Neither. It's a custom-wired cable with a 25-pin male DSUB connector on one end and a 15-pin high-density male DSUB connector on the other end. The 25-pin end plugs into your PC parallel port; the 15-pin end plugs into controller port 2 of your Jag. The loader simply looks at the pad port and interprets a set sequence of pad motions/button-presses (generated at very high speed by the PC) and translates that into data which is dumped into the Jag's RAM. Once the transfer is complete, the Jag generates a checksum of the data recieved, compares it with the PCs checksum and attampts to run the code if both match up. That's all. One caveat: WHATEVER YOU DO don't try and begin an upload unless you're at the BJL upload screen. If you do it at the main screen with a BJL-modified Jag it will thoroughly mangle the data contained in the EEPROM of whatever cart is inserted (to be safe, keep your JagCD plugged in with no cart plugged in through it). I lost a good deal of progress in PDR and screwed a Cybermorph cart through this bug. It may be fixed in ProtSE, but I wouldn't like to try it Especially with that extra-large EEPROM in there. Food for thought. No. There's nothing to plug it into Stone
