  1. I'd say it really depends on a number of factors. For instance, if the code were written in C++, it would, I would think, have to be re-written in C or in Assembly. That in itself would be pretty tough. Then, you have to try to optimise the code for the Jaguar, which I would figure would be even harder.

I imagine you could write wrappers to handle this.

Yeah, but the important question is how fast you could make them ;)

  2. What?...you're making no sense. :?

The universal header just lets it run on a production Jag without an Alpine or flash cart providing the 'kickstart' to start execution. That shouldn't be necessary on an emulator, as it doesn't need to emulate the encryption process.

  3. How was the gameply? or at least how did it look? Fight for Life on cartridge seems a bit slow I hope there were improvments on it.

Before they 'finished' it it ran much faster...I'm not 100% sure the rumours that a beta was sent for production are untrue ;)

  4. The publically-released version of Phaze Zero is a straight dump of the flash cart it was on, so there's a blank header on it. With an ALpine or flash cart it loads to $800000 and runs from $802000; I don't know if Project Tempest allows you to load things to cartspace, so this may or may not work for you.

Works great on real hardware though :)

Bear in mind it's a very technically-advanced game, so emulation isn't likely to be perfect even if you can get it to run.

  5. The other reason you're getting short shrift is that you could easily buy whatever games you wanted off existing retailers (Songbird, 16/32, B&C, hell, even Telegames). By refusing to give them your custom you make it less likely that supporting the Jag is worth their while, so they're more likely to just give up on stocking anything Jaguar altogether.

Hurting no one? Yeah, right.

  6. they can scr*w them selves for talking bout european jaguars. they are region free.

All carts work on all systems, but that's not necessarily what he was asking

Jags come in at least 3 'regions':

    1) American (NTSC/60Hz)

    2) European (PAL/50Hz)

    3) European v2 (same as above, but with no RF modulator)

I believe the Japanese ones are identical to the American ones.

As Tyrant said, a PAL Jaguar will work just fine on any decent TV if you use a video cable (not the RF output). Your TV will either squash the picture to fit your screen, or you'll lose the top and bottom edges of the screen. Likewise, an NTSC Jag used on a UK TV will either have the image stretched to fit, or will show it 'letterboxed' with black bars top and bottom. The image size and whether it's stretched or letterboxed is entirely down to whether the Jag's running at 50Hz or 60Hz, which is switchable via a motherboard jumper.

If the TV doesn't support the colour encoding (PAL or NTSC) then it'll only display in black and white, if at all. I'd suggest you check your TV's manual (or look up on the Net) to see whether it does support a PAL video signal - many major manufacturers' sets will (for example my Sony).

    Hope that helped :)

  7. What was the 3D dungeon crawler, action RPG that Rebellion was working on?  I remember seeing pics in Diehard Gamefan.

Legions of the Undead? Was supposed to be on the successor to the AvP engine, if I recall.

    walter_j64bit: First I heard of it :)

  8. I know that the MK3 JagCd is out there, but I have'nt seen it yet!

Where do you know from if you haven't seen it?

Remember Williams was taken to court by Atari for non-delivery of product - I don't think this would have happened unless they'd not actually started it ;)

  9. Game progress sure, but just high scores? Sounds a bit wasteful to me. Fill that EEPROM! :o

(Three bytes for score info [allows scores up to 16,777,215] + three bytes for player's initials) * 10 slots in hiscore table = 60 bytes, and that's not even as compressed as it could be.

A standard cart EEPROM is 128 bytes...where's the problem? :D

  10. Nope, there's a couple of models of controller, as you found out :)

The ones with black keypad buttons also have italic text for the numbers. The Dpad on these is more comfortable, in my opinion, but the keypad keys have a squishier action which I find irritating. The ones with grey keypad buttons are the other way around :)

Some of the ones with black keypad buttons also hve a much thinner cable, which is easier to tangle into a horrible mess.

Personally I'd recommend grabbing a Procontroller - the redesign makes the dpad much nicer overall, and the action buttons on the original controllers aren't a patch on the redesigned ones - they have a lovely texture and semi-solid action which I really love :)

  11. 1) Rewrite the JagCD encryption tools so they work on a PC with no Jag involved

    Yes.

    OK.

    2) Encrypt and burn CDs for every code change you make

No. That could be done, but why bother? I'd be more interested in a single, encrypted "bypass disc" which I (and anyone else) could use without BJL or a bypass cart. Something like the boot CD for dreamcast. Then I could happily play my new Black ICEWhite Noise revision 18 disc, or just any unencrypted CD I care to burn, otherwise. It would be kind of cool, if nothing else.

Oh! In that case I'd suggest you talk to Gordon of Sinister developments (sinigord on these forums, IIRC) - he's including a module on the rerelease of his game Painter which will allow you to swap the Painter disk for an unencrypted one and let it run. Given that Painter's going to be encrypted, all you'll have to do is load that up, then swap the CDs over :)

Just an FYI, I only have Windows XP. I'm not much of a Linux guy, but I plan to dual boot it with XP, anyway. Using BJL under Windows XP is no problem thanks to programs like UserPort, so that is not the reason I don't want to use it.

There have been quite a few posts since my last message, and unless I've missed it, no one has answered my question regarding exception vectors for debugging.

IIIIII guuuueeess I could use BJL... *huge sigh* :(

No reason you couldn't use the exception vectors (it's certainly better than the production Jag's error-handling - 'on any error, crash'), but I'm afraid I still don't see why you're so reluctant :)

Incidentally, Symmetry of TNG (also a forum member) wrote a lovely little BJL app to boot unencrypted CDs - it's only about 4KB, so all you have to do is upload it with the CD in the drive and it'll boot.

Maybe I'm being blind to the obvious :)

    HTH :)

What does that mean? Isn't that what it says on the banners stretched across the track in WTR/F1?!? :ponder:

Erm...no, it stands for 'Hope That Helps' 8)

  12. Mod is a standard format.  The songs in Tempest 2k are in mod format

and can be played on the amiga, pc etc...  this doesn't qualify as

    emulating the amiga's sound hardware.

My bad, I was using MOD to refer to any tracked file, which is afaik another legitimate usage :)

The file claims to be emulating Paula and I have no reason to suspect it doesn't. How's that? :)

  13. Guys, guys. Who cares how he wants to do it? He's here showing an interest in doing it at least. The alternatives have been pointed out to him.  He's aware of them.  He appears to know what he is doing.

Let's all just shake his hand and welcome him to the community and assist him in any way he needs. Then let us step back and let him do his thing.  :D

Our point is that if he's going to be doing stuff we want to (eventually! :))see results, and I for one would rather not see these results 6 months later than we otherwise might, purely because of his insistance on developing in an entirely perverse manner...I'm just impatient and greedy ;)

He's more than welcome to the community, but a certain amount of experience comes with us having hung around here far too long, and we were asked to share it, after all :D

  14. Still looks fake to me. The perspective's different to the background...looks like it's been warped a little to fit the screen, but not quite enough.

[or someone figured how TV-out works on their PC ;)]

  15. And let's not forget F1, which looks to be fairly complete. Thanks again, Jay, for including that one in your 2nd "Extremist Pack". :)

What exactly is unreleased about WTR? :?

I've also heard that another Grid game (in addition to KidGrid)was in progress at the time Jag development was halted.

Fair assumption, CountryGrid was released for the PC. I'd love to be able to generate new data tracks for VidGrid - the engine is obviously designed with this in mind (or the alternate PC versions wouldn't really have been worth doing, I guess) but it'd be damn cool to be able to put your own choice of videos in 8)
