Not my Atari VCS (that console formerly known as Ataribox)
pboland replied to Tidus79001's topic in Atari 2600
Abbreviation are not legal names. The term "VCS" was never trademark by Atari back in the day. It may have been used internally because it was easier to say, but that doesn't mean the CX2600 was ever officially called the "VCS". -

But Atari proper at the time never actually used the term "VCS" officially...Is that correct? What you stated would still just be an unofficial nick name of a know product. I have a feeling that Atari BITD never officially trademarked the term "VCS" or even used the term "VCS" in any true official capacity. Which would explain why current Atari feels comfortable using the name "ATARI VCS". -

I just did a quick search (so take that for what it's worth) but I don't believe "Atari VCS" was ever officially used back in the day. I was looking at CX2600 system manuals from before 1982 and they always spell out "Atari Video Computer System" and not "VCS". "VCS" looks to be an unofficial nick name of the original console. If that is the case them calling the new console "Atari VCS" technically isn't reusing an old name. Admittedly I could have missed something. Does anyone have any official (public not internal) literature from back in the day the utilizes "Atari VCS"? -

I realize the output values are important, that's why I stated: In all honesty, the parts I listed above are only $1.89 for two of those assemblies and that's with free shipping. If someone has a controller or two that doesn't function anyway (and has some very basic soldering and electronic skills) they should be able to put this together in a couple of hours. I really don't think the flex circuit is all that big of an issue. When I had a few 5200's I just use a small hole punch, some aluminum foil and some glue and made replacement conductive pads. It isn't hard. Heck, you don't even need the glue if you buy some aluminum tape. If you really want to fix it right, get a conductive pen. I wish I could do this myself, but I currently don't own a 5200 and I only have one controller (which was only used to check overlay fit). I don't know, maybe one of these days I'll get around to trying this. The biggest possible issue is going to be the output value of those potentiometers. but again, at $1.89 it's not a big loss if it doesn't work (and I'm sure there's a way to change out the POTs to get a different value).

Reproduction cartridge stickers?

Just PM'ed you. -
Looking at these images makes me think of these: Joystick analog Thumb stick for PS3 controller The above is a replacement part for PS3 analog joystick. It is the X,Y pots mounted together. I don't know if the spring tension would be strong enough to use the 5200 joystick itself, but it wouldn't be that hard to 3D print a new 5200 styled joystick that is lighter weight. Of course I don't know if the pot values are close enough to use on the 5200, but in theory these should work. Just a thought for anyone out there that wants to try it. I've got way too many other projects I'm working on to do it myself, but I thought I would put the info out there.

Thanks for the info on each game. I can look into making the box bigger. The trick is fitting everything into the price point (and of course time). I'm currently working on a few different label projects and overlay projects. I do make the silvered labels using a combination of material (foil type label) and type of printer. Each label is also clear laminated and computer cut. I do offer cart labels as well as overlays. For those interested just PM me.
-
Third party overlays are do-able. However, I'm not sure how many of those (Activision, Parker Bros, etc) actually use keypad function. I'll need to go through the manuals of each of the games and then design an overlay for that game. Now I just need to find the time. As for the "silvered bluishness" of Parker brothers, I'm already able to do this for cart labels: Doing this for overlays is a different story. I'm not able to make overlays that look the same as the cart labels right now. I say "right now" because, I never know if I will actually find a way to accomplish this in the future or not. I use to tell people I couldn't make the cart labels until I figured out the "magic mix" of materials and printing to make it happen. So, for right now I don't have the ability to make the "silvered bluishness" Parker brothers styled overlays, but the cart labels are not a problem. BTW, if you guys ever have any questions about overlays or cart labels, just ask.

Just to let you guys know, these are the labels I have available. Please PM (personal message) me if you are interested and have any questions. If you don't see a label you are looking for just let me know. -
Just contact me via PM (personal message) here on AtariAge. The overlays are $2.00 each ($4.00 per pair). There is a $20.00 minimum order (not including shipping). I'm happy to answer any questions you guys might have. Thanks again!

Had a chance to listen and wanted to say a BIG Thanks! for the mention. I'm glad you like the overlays. You are correct when you say home brew projects are a labor of love at least in my case, I can only speak for myself . Just a reminder that even though I may not have the Super Overlays box set to sell, I do sell the overlays individually (minus the metallic keypad cover overlays as those were Super Overlays box set exclusives). If you ever have any questions about my overlays or cart labels just let me know.

For the most part this project (as a set with box and dust cover overlays) is over. I will never offer this set again. I do have three copies that I'm still waiting on payment for and if I don't hear from them soon I will have these three copies up for sale. For now they are sold out. If you still are looking for 5200 overlays and missed out on this offer you can still buy them individually @2.00 per overlay (this is my standard charge for individual overlays be it ColecoVision, Atari 5200, Jaguar, or Intellivision). No I will never be offering this set again so if you think you can just wait for it to come around again, it ain't happen. As I add more titles to my overlay catalog I will use this topic to keep everyone up to date and of course I'm always looking for suggestions for overlay titles. Thanks to everyone who helped support and make this project a great success. Thanks again and Merry Christmas! More to come...
