New Dreamcast releases - Your opinions
goatdan replied to goatdan's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Thanks for the kind words! Just so you know, you don't need the dance mat for Feet of Fury. The controller works, and so does a keyboard. Maqiupai is an arcade version of Shanghai, more or less. There should be a demo coming out at some point in the future. Out of curiosity, what message boards are you referring too? The ones at Sega.com? Feet of Fury is limited to 5000. Each game will have 100 copies signed by the developers. Other than Feet of Fury, those 100 copies will be hand numbered. Copies 1-25 will go to a special edition that I'll get into in a minute... Actually, this is an interesting point that you bring up. We are tentatively planning on making a special release of 100 copies of a "The Making Of..." after we have released 10 games. It would possibly include a special box set, a special booklet explaining the backstory on each game, who made it and why that type of game was picked, and maybe some other interesting stuff. Of the 100 that would be released, 25 of them would be the signed copies numbered 1-25 from all of the releases that we have made. We are 90% set on making this happen right now, and these two posts just brought that up to about 95%. The box set would cost more than the releases alone would though, because producing something really nice looking in low numbers is definitely not cheap... Ze_ro, I'm going to go through your post with a whole new post in a second because it will take some more explaining... joey, the ratings aren't required for selling in stores at all. It just helps. -
Please read through this, I would greatly appreciate it... and there is a deal at the end As many people on here know, the GOAT Store has so far published three games for the Sega Dreamcast since the system has no longer been supported in the United States. As I've mentioned in some posts, most recently the "developers pissed off" thread, these releases have drawn interest from industry insiders as a possible 'new idea' about how to publish small, niche titles and possibly make money. A few facts about our releases: - They are playable on any system no matter the region encoding -- PAL or NTSC. In fact, to date over 60% of each release has been sold in Asia and over 75% of each release has been sold outside of the US. - They are professionally pressed discs in a professional jewel case. They are silk screened. Everything about them is done with the utmost care to details. There is no burning and no self-printing done here. In fact, I have a hunch that we are using the same factory that Sega used for their releases. - They are developed independantly by developers that are developing as a side job or to do concepts that they couldn't otherwise do. - They are developed in the KallistiOS environment, which means that we do not have to pay Sega licensing fees and gives the same functionality as the actual development system, if not more because people are still developing for it. Now, we want everyone to take these releases as serious as a real release. We have taken some steps to do so. For starters, every release from here on out will get its own bar code. Some industry insiders are trying to convince me to get the games ESRB rated, which I really can't afford at this time, although we are keeping the option open (and have had paperwork sent to us from the ESRB about the possibility of doing so). What I am wondering is what else could we do to make the games releases even better? I would really like to hear what serious game collectors think that we could do to improve the look and feel of the games. I won't name here what we have come up with, because I want everyone to come up with their own opinions. I will be paying very close attention, and you can expect at least some of the opinions to happen as soon as possible. Now, for the deal. Please only take advantage of this if you reply in the thread, but to thank you for giving me / us your opinion, we have put a limited number of our Dreamcast releases up for sale exclusively through this thread and one other I'll write later tonight. You can get all three releases for $36.00, which is a savings of $8.70 from their usual price. To take advantage of this deal, the link is - http://goatstore.com/info.php?id=372031 Thanks a ton in advance!

The problem that EA has had is exactly what people have stated in this thread -- gamers have come to realize that their sports games are all a high quality, but other than that you never know. Nothing that EA has done with the Bond license is as good as GoldenEye in my opinion. The LOTR games were absolutely horrendous from what I've played of them. It just was stuff that wasn't that great. And then Take 2 swooped in with their sports games priced at $20.00 for a product of equal play value to most gamers, and suddenly EAs sports franchises weren't selling as well either. Every company that is having stock problems needs to find some things to claim are the reasons they are failing. If you listen to Six Flags, it seems that every year since 2000 has kept people away because of "unseasonably bad weather" in every market. I'm sorry, but after five years in a row of "unseasonably bad weather" I wonder what is good weather? EA games didn't sell because people weren't interested in the games EA was making. Plain and simple.

If you have a PS2 and you're looking for a cheap game that has really, really high production values, find Headhunter. It is an incredible game with the best game soundtrack ever, and the rush I get from playing it is unparalleled. The Dreamcast version is more impressive graphically, but both versions are just great. And for $7.00 used at both EB and Gamestop, you can't go wrong Other than that, for some good ol' fashioned modern fun, check out Outrun 2 for the Xbox. Incredible. And if you haven't already, get Metroid Prime for the GameCube. Actually, PM me and I have a copy I could sell you really cheaply if you don't have it already. That game is amazing. There we go One suggestion for everyone console just in case you only have one!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT :o If the winning bidder comes through with payment, maybe it's time that I sell off my collection and buy a house! Holy crap!

I always found it odd that Robotron X didn't have dual shock support. I realize it was an early release and all, but man would that have been the PERFECT game for it
-
I mostly agree with that. I think it comes off as being a crappy controller for titles like sports titles because they don't adapt it to the controller. In my opinion, only a game like Tony Hawk (which has always used four face buttons) is hard to translate. If they changed it up a little, it wouldn't be so bad even for sports games. There are a lot of games that it just feels perfect for though... Metroid Prime is a "prime" example of that. I can't imagine a controller being better equipped to handle Metroid with. You do realize that the 'click' you are feeling in the shoulder buttons is intentional so the shoulder buttons can be both analog and digital buttons, right? I forget the games that use this, but I want to say that Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes is one of them -- hold the trigger down before the click, and you'll grab onto an enemy. Click the button and you'll snap their necks. In my opinion, the shoulder buttons for the GameCube are just genius. As for the Z-button, yeah it is in a weird spot... (and was obviously added last minute) but I can't complain too much. It is functional enough, and it seems most games don't map too much to it.

Here are a few quick ones... not all can still be found new: Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - great adventure game fun Headhunter: Redemption - Dropped to $20.00. The original is better, but Redemption is still worth a look. Future Tactics - You'll like it or hate it, but for $5.00 new at GameStop, it's worth the risk. I like it. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - another great adventure game Sonic Mega Collection Plus - (almost) all your Sonic in one title. 2k5 sports series - All really solid sports titles. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Get this, you must. Incredible Star Wars RPG.

I've heard, but can't confirm that the slim PS2 doesn't experience as many of the big PS2 problems, but has a different set of its own. I found the GameCube controller to be the easiest to just slip into since the Jaguar controller. I do get confused about which buttons are which sometimes, but I like it.

How long has your Jaguar passion run? How far has it to go?
goatdan replied to justclaws's topic in Atari Jaguar
I became a Jaguar fan in 1996, I think, when I and a friend both bought Jaguar systems with games because I had read an article about it years earlier being the "end all" console and hearing about it on Jaguar Interactive (the first one). Since the price was only about $40 for a new console, and $10 for most games, we happily got them. Even though it didn't live up to that hype, we both fell in love with certain games -- Tempest being the big one. I ended up going to Jagfest 99 with my friend that bought one and it was a blast. In 2001, I held Jagfest in Milwaukee. Since then (and at least partially because of the fallout of it), I haven't paid as much attention to my Jaguar. I still enjoy the system, but I don't have space to hook it up at my apartment right now and a lot of the people that I talked to have moved on. I still enjoy it, but my attention has turned to the Dreamcast now more than anything. -
Games with good gameplay/lousy story or vice versa
goatdan replied to Shannon's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I agree that in most games, the storyline really is secondary -- do I get to do something I really enjoy? If so, who cares which princess I'm saving. I mean hell -- the Super Mario games were you saving the Princess from Bowser. Why did Bowser kidnap her? Why do plumbers come to the rescue? Why in SMB3 does a feather give you a raccoon tail? It doesn't make any sense, but I don't care because it doesn't need to. It's just fun. I guess on the other side of the spectrum, I'd put Lost Eden for the 3DO. I loved the story so much it kept me sitting through the extremely simple interface and I keep a 3DO just for it. There are rare games where I feel that both elements really work together well. I would point to the original (or Twin Snakes) Metal Gear Solid and Headhunter as two games that really do that. MGS immerses you in a world where the storyline becomes absolutely fascinating, and Headhunter uses some Hollywood tricks -- specifically the best video game soundtrack I've ever heard (recorded for the first time by a full orchestra at the same studio that did a Bond movie and the Mummy) and because of how that helped tie the cut scenes and the gameplay together flawlessly, it really made me like it. Just a plug -- if you've never checked out Headhunter, you can get it used now for $7.00 on the PS2. The graphics look a little dated (it's a ported Dreamcast game...) but it is all there. Just watch out for the sequel that was just released. It's okay, but not nearly as good. -
Ah, I just realized this was for the GameCube version. I have the Xbox version. I would assume they are the same, but I haven't ever seen the GameCube version to know what the price is...

Turn based strategy. Recently, I had a binge of "buy really cheap games that I've been interested in" because EB was running a trade in two non-sports titles and get an extra $10.00 of in-store credit. So I bought a whole bunch of games that were $5.00 or less and figured that the ones I liked, I would keep and the ones that I thought were so-so, I would return (along with the others that I had). During this time, I bought Future Tactics new from GameStop for $5.00 new because it looked interesting and I figured that when it sucked (the last game I bought this cheap was Drake...), I could trade it in. I'm keeping it. I'm actually rather impressed by it. Very simple gameplay, kinda slow, but an interesting turn-based strategy title none the less. I really enjoy it, and for $5.00 new even if you don't, you can always take it to EB during their next sale and get $5.00 of in-store credit for it

How often do you play current gen games?
goatdan replied to sega saturn x's topic in Modern Console Discussion
How often? Well, last month was a definite oddity for me. Once I found out that EB Games was doing a trade in two games, get an extra $10.00 credit on top of their value deal, I set about playing through all of the games I had purchased for my Xbox and GameCube cheaply so I could sell the ones that weren't too good. Because of this push to dump games, I played about an hour a night on average last month. Now, I'm back to a much more "normal" thirty minutes a night at most, and probably closer to 15. -
New ESRB rating...E10+....what do you think?
goatdan replied to bruser_inc's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Looking through my import collection, no they do not. In fact, it is only on the back of the boxes that you can find the ratings at all. US games carry them right on the front as we all know. Yes. Every time there is an argument about how the ESRB ratings are stupid, it is always because "parents don't look at them." Is that the job of the ESRB to force parents to look at them? No. It is the job of the parent. It is one tool. When I'm a parent, I know I'll be using them. And I don't know about where all these 10 year olds are going to buy M rated games that eveyone claims too. I have seen countless kids turned away by stores in Milwaukee when asking to purchase a M rated game. -
A few points... Before I get into the meat of this, about the DS being a failure: The DS has already sold well over 2 million units worldwide. If you took the Lynx, GameGear and the Neo Geo Pocket, combined they never sold close to two million units. Nintendo did it in about four months. Even if the DS "only" sells 5 million consoles ever and the PSP sells 20 million, that doesn't make the DS a failure. Now, about the new system -- Nintendo has said all along the DS would be the third tier. Nintendo also recently announced that they would be bringing the Palm OS onto the DS sometime this year. If that happens, the DS is suddenly the most powerful PDA on the market today, and it truly does go for a completely different market than a gaming system. It does aim older. Personally, I have a PDA and wouldn't mind at all getting a DS one as the two screen thing would work really well. Nintendo _should_ have launched the DS with the PDA OS built in and it would've been that from the start. Now they do have a bit of a problem with them. That having been said, if the GBA Next (my pet name for it) is a really powerful gaming machine, then it also serves a different market. You don't get as many PDA-ish games, but you also don't get any PDA-ish functionality. I carry my PDA around with me at work. If my DS got the same functionality, I'd also have it with me at work... and if I got a GBA Next it wouldn't be carried on me. Nintendo has the *potential* to serve two different, diverse markets with these two machines. Whether they capitilize on that is something I guess we will have to wait and see.

Iron Soldier 2, in my opinion, is one of the best Jaguar games there is. I don't know why, but I did not care for the first one at all... but the second one offers a perfect balance of gameplay that I love. You should find it and get it for sure. Oddly enough, I own IS3 for my Playstation and have yet to actually play it. I can't wrap my head around using the PS1 controller to play

Differences between Jag/Sat version of Tempest 2000?
goatdan replied to evilmax17's topic in Atari Jaguar
Wish I had seen this thread earlier. I love the original game, and I happily picked up the game for the Saturn too, as well as the PSX. The PSX one is a different game, which means that I don't want to compare it head-to-head. Let me just say though that I prefer the 2000 version even though the X version is not bad at all. The Saturn version features a few different things -- first off the "good." The Saturn version features the CD audio, which if you like is nice. Personally, I like the Jag music a little more as it seems to be crisper in that format. The frame rate is a little better, but not too noticably. After that, I can't recall anything that I liked more about it. And I didn't like the CD audio more, but a lot of people do. The problems -- First off, the AI droid is a great help in the Jag version. It will fly around and handle different parts of the web for you so that you can focus your energies in a smaller area. In the Saturn version, the AI droid sits right behind you, basically proving itself useless. In fact, if I get a chance to grab a "Yes Yes Yes!" bonus upon leaving the web in the Saturn version, I usually avoid it because the double powered shots are MUCH more helpful than the stupid droid. Secondly, they changed some of how the enemies act. If I recally correctly, the two main ones that were changed is the Zappers and the Spikers. The Zappers, upon reaching the end of the Web slowly move around the Web like the other enemies. This is how the original Tempest did it, but it doesn't make you feel the same fear about them. It makes it so that if you have a jump, you can avoid them pretty easily. I may be wrong about that one though. The Spikers are a much bigger deal to me. Instead of getting the power-upped zapper and being able to cut through the spikes like butter, you have to spend forever trying to cut through them. So you can reach the end of a level and be playing really well, and get yourself stuck on a spike because you couldn't shoot fast enough. The non-enemy part has already been mentioned -- the nice gourad shading stuff that the Jaguar version had going on is replaced by polys where you can really see where they are. It isn't as pretty. The Jaguar version is by FAR the superior version. I remember when the other versions came out, reviewers were disappointed that they didn't hold up gameplay wise to the Jaguar version. -
Metal Gear for the Gamecube and Gba Questions
goatdan replied to thegamezmaster's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I'm going through it right now. It is just like the original version from what I can tell with greatly updated graphics and other minor tweaks as already noted. On another note, I would strongly suggest picking up Headhunter for the PS2 if you like this sort of game. Headhunter is really a solid game, and it is definitely worth playing through -
I'm confused by this? You don't think I'm trying to create the game as part of Parodious franchise do you? Ack. Sorry, I've been away from the boards... I just mean that you shouldn't base any parts of your games on another game -- if you want to make a game like that, instead of naming it Parodious, which is a known name, rename it something different. If you're going to make a game as a parady, you might want to call it "Paralarious" for instance. I work with a lot of developers on Dreamcast titles, and if you have one main concept that you stick with, chances are much better that the game will turn out well. If you try to do five different types of games in one, most likely you're either going to have one really good one and four that are okay or five that are average. Work on making one part really, really solid and it will be a lot more impressive to prospective employeers in the future.
-
If you think you're actually going to program it at some point, focus on ONE gameplay style and then work on making it good. While doing a ton of smaller ones is a nice concept, it will take a long time to actually get through making like that. I would also seriously consider not using anything directly from other games. If you change the island name, you could legally release it when you are done with it as freeware just to show people your work. It also greatly impresses real-world video game companies to see original things, instead of spin-offs of other games.

PSX - Original large game cases
goatdan replied to ElephantStyle's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There were about one-hundred of these. I was just exploring the idea of collecting them all about a week ago, when I decided I would only pick up the ones I was truly interested in or found SUPER cheap. I just don't play that many PS1 games to make it worthwhile. That having been said, Destruction Derby is a great game -
Whats on top of your nintendo?
goatdan replied to sega saturn x's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I got mine from a resale shop. Kinda funny story... I walked in and asked if they had any NES consoles for sale, and they said no but we have one built into a TV. They showed it to me and said that they kept getting calls about the system itself, but no one wanted the TV. I thought about it, but with no where to put it (I was still living at my parents house attending College), I opted against it. The next morning, I realized my fiancee was moving in with her roomate and needed a TV. So I decided that TV would be their housewarming gift. Then, in about a year when I married her, I'd get it back Worked wonderfully. On an interesting note, it only cost me $49.99. The same store sold the consoles for $39.99. -
Whats on top of your nintendo?
goatdan replied to sega saturn x's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have a TV on top of my Nintendo, with a VCR and DVD player on top of that... I've got one of those slick TV / NES combo things On my SNES... is nothing. It's in a storage case. On my N64... is nothing. It's in a storage case too. On my GameCube is the game Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes which I began playing yesterday. Of course, that's only on top if you look under the lid... -
It wasn't a dig. I put it in to see how long it would take for someone to get offended, criticize what I said or bring up a reason why the statement isn't true. Not very long apparently. I think I've proven my point. You made a statement that said that you didn't like the fact that others made posts that were in anger over the fact that other people didn't like their console and how that should stop... and then made a dig against the Xbox? You say it wasn't a dig, but how else would someone take it? If you don't want posts to continue about this sort of thing, why would you do that? It doesn't make any sense, but hey... whatever, you got me. I said that the Xbox looked good in the public's eye, and therefore I am most defintely the reason for the problem
