I'm very much against modding. I love my consoles and I think there's something "pure" about keeping it as close to the factory-fresh condition as possible. I've even chosen to not mod my SNES or N64 to play import games, even though said mod is only removing a bit of plastic from inside the cart slot. I just don't want to mess up my systems. That said, there are some mods I accept and even like. Modding a system to ADD functionality is okay, as long as it's discrete. I'm very much okay with putting composite outputs on a 2600 or NES2, for example. And of course, fixing the buzzing issue on Vectrex systems. And, if you want to go ahead and turn your NES into a DVD player or toaster, okay... just please, please use a system that's already dead. That way, you're not reducing the number of usable vintage systems in the world. But what I really hate are the pimped-out systems. Taking a perfectly good system, not adding anything new, and spray-painting it, or adding lights or chrome, or any of that crap. Of course, I never understood doing that to a PC case, but I guess I'm just weird. Of course, it's your stuff, you can do what you want with it... I just hope we don't lose any rare systems to this fad.

Please note: This does not in ANY WAY imply that I have any such device that I'm intending to sell

Classic Gaming = I was hip before it was hip!
godslabrat replied to superjudge3's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well, if you remember, during the 80s there was a big throwback to the 60s and even late 50s. Remember Back to the Future? Reruns of The Monkees, Happy Days, The Wonder Years? A Christmas Story? Come to think of it, the neon/chrome/hologram designs that were so popular in the 80s were basically just a remix of many designs popular in the 50s. I think it's cyclical... after 20 years, people grow up and have warm, fuzzy, inaccurate memories of their childhood. Plus, they have disposable income to help feed their nostalgia, and it's only a matter of time before someone can generate an entire industry out of the nostalgia. Hey, I'm not complaining. Thanks to this, I got to watch The Monkees on Nickelodeon as a kid, and I'm getting cheap NES stuff on eBay as an adult. It's a great system! -
Hi all Back in April or so, SNK announced that it was discontinuing support for the Neo-Geo, and on a related note, Neo-Geo games would soon be offered on the VC marketplace. Was any time frame given as to WHEN this would be happening? Also, I thought I heard a rumor about a year ago of some C=64 games moving to the VC. Was there any truth to this? Finally, I'm really tempted to take a plunge on the xbox 360 because of the arcade game downloads (I'll be all over TMNT) has Nintendo even considered a similar product on the VC network?

Got a pirated game on eBay, not on purpose...
godslabrat replied to godslabrat's topic in Auction Central
Here's the pics I don't think there was any glue on the box at all, and it seemed to be made from card stock, not stiff cardboard. The wording speaks for itself. A non-pirate game has no picture on the label, and an actual rating instead of "RP". The correct part number should be AGB-002. -

Nintendo Power: Shutting down?
godslabrat replied to 8th lutz's topic in Gaming Publications and Websites
I no longer memorize every issue like I used to, but NP has always been my favorite gaming mag. If it goes, a little bit of my childhood will go with it. I've been a subscriber for nearly 20 years. Heck, when I started, it was still bi-monthly. -

godslabrat replied to godslabrat's topic in Auction Central
Yes, I do have pics, and I'll be posting them tomorrow afternoon sometime. For the time being, I'd rather not post a link to the auction. I want to give the seller every chance to make this right. He's had a few other complaints, though, so I'm being realistic. -
Yeah, I bought a GBA game on eBay, and it turns out the thing is pirated. Nothing in the listing to indicate that it was pirated, and it didn't come from China, HK, or any other piracy hotspot. I've sent the seller a friendly request for a refund, giving him/her the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, a trip to the post office will clear the whole thing up. (If not, I'm prepared to be a bastard) Has anyone ever had something like this happen? If so, how did it turn out? For the record, this is NOT an anti-eBay post. I think eBay is a great system, though I use it so much I was statistically due for a mishap. :-)

I'll be there! Look for the guy in the obnoxious Hawaiian shirt.

Well, I went to fire up one of my favorite systems last night, and *gulp* my Virtual Boy doesn't seem to be working anymore. The right eyepiece is totally dark. I'd like to repair it if possible, before I start hunting for a replacement. Are there any online resources for this?

What games suck more than E.T.?

The NES version of Rocket Ranger. I'd rather be stuck on a desert island with Cheetahmen II. -
Jack Thompson targets Microsoft in his last crusade
godslabrat replied to 8th lutz's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Dude, did you read that? The shooter did a lot of writing. We need to ban Microsoft Word... no, scratch that, we need to take legal action against pens and pencils! Damn you, Bic! -
In my home, we have a "Fatty" PS2 in the game room and a slimline PSTwo in the bedroom. The slimline has two major flaws that prevent it from being used as the primary system: 1) It's not compatible with the PS2 hard drive, which is not much of a loss considering how few games support that anyway and 2) the irritating, always-present fan noise. Unlike the fatty, the PSTwo does not have a true on/off switch. So, as long as it's drawing some sort of voltage, the internal fan runs just a little bit. Very, very irritating. My final solution was just to unplug it when it's not in use. Fine for the bedroom, but no way would I ever want to monkey around with it for serious gaming.

Atari 2600 and 36 Games - keep or sell?
godslabrat replied to jpjgfairchild's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Define "worth anything". No, they're not worth nearly what they were 20 years ago. However, to someone who might be starting an Atari collection, you've given them a great starting point. If the system is in good working order, I'd say you could pull about $50 depending on what the shipping costs were. I've been looking for a starter setup myself. I'd make you an offer, were I not dead broke... -
I have the original GB, original GBA and the DS, skipped the Color and SP entirely. I liked the vertical layout of the SP only because it matched the orginal GB's layout (which I was already used to). For all other purposes, I prefer my original GBA, which is why I never upgraded. I'm in the minority that actually liked the reflective unlit screen. But yeah, the flip design made the system more pocket-friendly.

Hi All I've been tossing around the idea of taking GodsLabRat.com and making it (in part) a studio for classic gaming gear. This plan is still in its infancy, but I wanted to start collecting feedback early. I thought a good baby step would be to try a line of classic gaming shirts. Could you guys check out my stuff and tell me what you think? GodsLabRat.com Gift Shop Again, this is just the first in what I hope will be a full-fledged classic gaming line.
