    - If YES, then why are you in this forum specifically for the Atari VCS, is it to save us from our stupidity, or to make a point?

I just have so much love to give.

You specifically say that they struggle selling $300 computers.  Sure is that 'NO ONE'?  No.  But that is 'struggling'.  Whether they are useful is debatable, as I hate using Windows myself :P So if you want to be that picky... meh, whatever dude.  Have some Scotch, it's a fantastic way to wash away all your hate for Atari.

Yes, I said they struggled. PCs are in a decline, and have been for 10-15 years now.  This is well-known.  Wal-Mart stocks the few units they have in low-traffic areas, taking up very little floor space, and they don't bring in large quantities at a time.  These are all signs of a product that isn't moving in high volume... which, given the known decline of PCs, is perfectly understandable.

I then point out that, despite this, a $300 Wal-Mart PC would offer a better value for a homeschool parent than a ChesnaisTrunk, and that would be apparent to anyone doing the shopping.  Thus, it is very easy to speculate on the possibility of seeing Atari's potato at retail.

This is, of course, ignoring the completely separate question of if Atari would ever be in a position to actually produce enough units to supply even a full Wal-Mart region, much less the entire chain.

Nope, you actually took me out of context.  When you said no one is buying those 300 dollar PCs at walmart, I said plenty of people were buying those for kids.

I literally did not say that.

And people said I was aggressive and pissy.  You don't actually have to buy an external drive, people have installed over AtariOS.  You don't even need a Windows license, Linux is perfectly capable of doing word processing.  Plus you didn't mention that before.  Plus you can also do it through google docs.  So yeah you can literally do all that through the Chrome browser.  You could do that through AtariOS.

Sorry, I thought you knew that too :P

Besides Win10 should in theory be able to run with 6gb of ram.  But yeah you don't need Windows for any of that, as you have Chrome / Google Docs.

    So, to recap:

Your contention is that a parent buying a homeschool PC would consider "Google docs on Atari" or "Wipe and install Linux" as meaningful alternatives to buying a Windows PC for the same amount of money, and just opening the box and plugging it in?

    Am I understanding you correctly?

Huh, a keyboard and mouse are a bunch of addons?

Also, when did it become the AtariCube?

This is a Cube, and it was made by Apple.

You can't run Windows on a VCS without buying AT LEAST an external drive and a Windows license.  Most sources I've seen say you really should boost the memory if you plan to do this.  And then yes, a keyboard and mouse.

Sorry, I thought you knew that.

I would be surprised if Walmart didn't sell those 300 PCs.  Especially in the day and age where kids have to do schooling at home.

Also you know there will be some that are like 'Little Timmy keeps asking for some video games... this one says it comes with 100, let's get little Timmy this one...' not knowing of course they are 40 years old...

What parent is going to get their kid a "school" computer that doesn't run a mainstream operating system out of the box?

Will they sell to random people at Walmart?  That really is the key question.  If they don't pull an old Atari and actually market the thing, they just might.  Honestly, with how it is packaged, and how it looks, if it gets much shelf space at all, it will probably sell.

The key answer, then, is "no".  Wal-Mart has struggles selling $300 computers that actually do something useful out of the box.  There's no way the Fuji sphere is competitive as a PC or as a Game Console in the world of big-Box retail.

Good for you, I'd say you're lucky. I have a feeling there will be people holding the bag on this one, even if they are able to ship some orders.

I was on discord and there is a guy on there who just dumped $1k on a new order....  😜

I'm sure they're still getting some orders, but I strongly suspect that new orders are now outpaced by refund requests.

    Polymega is *out* of time.

Actually, I bought one of those little 3D printed dumpster fires off Etsy, and it's pretty cool.

You do understand backer release vs general release, right?

Also, Debian Potato got subsequent releases.  😛

I understand Atari wants to be rid of this dumpster fire as quickly as possible.

If they do something similar after general release, then people have every right to scream.

It's cute that you think there will ever be another release of this potato

How far were they from production when pandemic shutdowns hit?  They had prototypes and games that people were playing six months before they started pre-orders.  That was all funded with venture capital.

Not really the thread to discuss that.

  13. If nothing else, both the Amico and the VCS can be excellent example of why crowdfunding to launch a video game console is a terrible idea.

Not sure why we needed to learn this lesson yet again, but here we be.

There were a bit slow to reply, but they are cancelling my order and refunding me. I'll update once the refund has actually gone through. Nothing like giving a nice interest free loan to a company for a few years... If it had been delivered within a year I wouldn't really be that bothered by it, but I think this is going on 3 years?

You know, it's been a while since I heard someone say retroblox "Just needed to get better at communicating."

I was just thinking this morning about how awesome it is to be a gamer right now. I’ve got my PS4 and Switch, both with tons of new and classic games, just got done playing California Games on Evercade, PS5 is out, we’ve got the Playdate and Amico coming... I mean talk about an embarrassment of riches!

I reflect on myself as a kid, browsing through the game aisle at Toys R Us and seeing all this stuff I’d never get to play (we had a 2600 and my bros and I could buy a new game every few months).  It’s just amazing how far we’ve come and how much is at our fingertips now. Good times!

The Switch has taken its place as the best console I've ever had.  One system gets you access to something good from nearly every console ever made.

    Atari Vault on Steam

    edit:

The strange thing about the plex arcade system, if I understand it correctly, is that you need two computers for it to work.  A PC to do be the streaming server and another device to play on.  So you aren't even streaming from their servers.

Yeah, plex is built around the idea of a home media server.   That's not bad in itself, but it's bizarre to think that 1) someone who could build a home server couldn't manage an emulator and 2) I'd pay them a monthly fee to use my own computer and my own roms.
