  1. Here's a company that took a similar path: "Old El Paso products are marketed across the globe. The brand is owned by General Mills. Pillsbury acquired it in 1995, when its then-parent company Grand Metropolitan bought Pet, Inc., which had itself taken over the brand in 1968 from the Mountain Pass Canning Company.[1]" So basically, we're just waiting for some low-level employee to buy the rights to the name (but nothing of value) and try to crowdfund a new gig.
  2. You need to throw in a few "rads" and "sucks", but you're off to a good start.
  3. It's like, you can get hamburger and hot sauce at Taco Bell, but it's not truly a dish unless it's prepared by a loving Hispanic kitchen. That's nuance. That's the reason you go.
  4. You know what made the VCS? HardWork.
  5. Since I have no idea what SNk wants to do, let me just say what I would LIKE them to do. I would like to see them release a $99 micro console with the ability to purchase digital games. A 50/50 mix of new and vintage games would be ideal. SNK has a great back library, but if you aren't a fighting game enthusiast, it gets same-y very quickly. This is my second choice. My first choice would be for them to forgo the hardware at all and just release on the switch.
  6. Oh, it's a real Atari console. Not sure that's anything to be proud of, but it is.
  7. While you're making your decision, I would ask you to look very carefully at the evidence (I would say clear evidence) that Atari did not actually intend to produce this product themselves when they announced it... that the Ataribox effort was a strategy to make the company attractive to be bought out by a larger firm who would then be on the hook to deliver. The strategy did not work out, and now Atari has had to release a product through considerable arm-twisting. Most likely, they will do nothing to build a platform from here on out. Do you see them recruiting developers? Do you see them announcing related accessories? Do you see them doing anything with the "community" they allegedly used crowdfunding to build? Do you even see them attempting to produce another batch of Atari VCS units? Look, you can have hope, but I can only ask you to note how much of that hope is backed by anything in reality. Essentially, some are trying to sell the AtariCube as a game console, until it becomes clear it has no selling points as such. Then they want to sell it as a very expensive electronic Funko Pop, until it becomes uncomfortable noticing how few people really want such a thing. Even after it's released, no one can decide what it is or why we should want it.
  8. There is literally no part of this I can agree with. When comparing two products, especially two technical products, it's very easy to make comparisons. You're literally asking, over and over, if the product CAN do a task, and HOW EASILY it can do a task. You compare the two products based on the answers to those two questions, asked over and over, on various tasks. The Atari VCS can't do much. What it can do, it can't do particularly well. You can compare it to devices that cost the same, or even cost less, and it continues to not compare well. I don't particularly care why a certain individual wants to buy it. That's not on me. But if they're suggesting I should buy it, or anyone else should buy it, then yes, "Is it worth it?" becomes the central question.
  9. No large retailer is going to look at l'Atari struggling to move a few hundred units and think "We should order half a million of these."
  10. I'm willing to watch and be convinced. Like has been said before, SNK has relevant properties they could make exclusive. And talent that could turn them into awesome games. The question then becomes, what can they do to make me spend the money on the hardware? I have two $300 consoles, I really don't want another. So they'll have to either be a budget console or knock it OUT OF THE PARK to get me to bite.
  11. More games on the r-zone. And at least they work with the controller included.
  12. And this... is of course, the IDEAL device for moms to watch Netflix on!
  13. Since people apparently are receiving the VCS, I'm calling it officially shipped, and have updated my spreadsheet accordingly.
  14. Well... you might be kidding, but name a worse one? A hyperscan is more appealing rn.
  15. Nope. It also looks really cool according to... *checks notes* some people.

  17. So a while back, I got the itch to make retrogaming videos, but I really didn't want to just clone AVGN or review games that everyone could find. For a while, that meant I didn't do it at all. But when quarantine hit, I got the itch to buy all the weird stuff on AliExpress that I looked at and made me scratch my head. I had three rules: Buy weird games Don't buy anything that could be confused with a legit game. Buy stuff that had no legit form Whenever possible, buy stuff you've never even heard of before. My first video, I released today, and it's the Sega Genesis version of "Mortal Kombat 5": There's also an unboxing video if you're interested in a preview. If you have suggestions for future installments, my ears and wallet are open.
  18. I think they're taking the revenue saved by closing stores and redirecting it to the ones they keep open. It's like a reverse ponzi scheme-- and it won't last forever. The only reason it's lasted this long is that they started with such a large number of stores.
  19. Hey, I don't care when people get them. If people start reporting tracking numbers, then l'Atari did actually ship.
  20. True, but their rules welcome the type of business l'Atari brings. IGG isn't set up to attract legit hardware projects. Anyone with something real to offer would go to Kickstarter.
  21. I'm hearing that "it's a console that doubles as a PC", but I'm having a hard time calling it either, much less both.
  22. Ha. Well, I happen to be a fan of the Virtual Boy AND Crystal Pepsi. But I can have a serious talk about why I like those things. I don't begrudge you liking the VCS, I'd never be rude to you over it. But I have yet to see any indication that it has any purpose in the world other than being a vehicle for a familiar logo.
  23. A thread about a bullshit device has a lot of bullshit comments? I did not see that coming
