  1. Think I have a proper frequency table generator. This is its output: ("spoiler" as to not visibly lengthen the thread unnecessarily). Output is RFC4180 CSV with a header. It describes C1-B9. Nine octaves, i.e. 108 values. Columns are: n, equal_tempered_frequency, PAL_hex, NTSC_hex, PAL_frequency, NTSC_frequency n: 0-107 (arrays start at zero ) equal_tempered_frequency: the exact equal tempered frequency in Hertz PAL_hex: 16-bit hexadecimal value for a PAL machine NTSC_hex: 16-bit hexadecimal value for an NTSC machine PAL_frequency: audible frequency on a PAL machine NTSC_frequency: audible frquency on an NTSC machine Here's the source. Tomorrow I hope to incorporate this into Pokey Explorer.
  2. Preparing for v0.2 release I wrote some sort of manual: https://github.com/ivop/pokey-explorer Please report any "Dunglish" (Dutch English)
  3. Yes, the idea is that 16-bit "Z"weeps can be done on any combination of channels. Attached is the latest version of "pokey explorer". Downloading the xex from github is not reliable. Would be nice if it could be tested on real hardware. I have not been able to do that, because my SIO2PC PC's monitor died recently. And so did my card reader a while ago. Can't put files on my SIDE2 CF card. pokeyexp.xex
  4. Couldn't help it. Here's an updated version. All visible UI items (inverse video keys) are functional now. No sweeps yet, but I hid that line https://github.com/ivop/pokey-explorer edit: remember, holding shift with 1-8/Q-I increases/decreases by $10 (16). So many weird sounds to be found. Perhaps I should add a random button
  5. Here's what I have so far: https://github.com/ivop/pokey-explorer/blob/master/pokeyexp.s handle_keypress is something for tomorrow or the day after. First, I'm going kayaking with my brother tomorrow 8-bit or 16-bit tuned tables and shortcuts to play the $Ax notes is something for after that.
  6. Version 3.10 of my emulator Altirra is now out: http://www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html Thanks to everyone who provided feedback and support (or just put up with the huge thread ). 3.10 final is the same as the last test release 3.10-test36 except for version changes. Highlights since 3.00 (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/273633-altirra-300-released/): Accuracy: Improved POKEY high-pass filter and PAL high artifacting, fixes to serial emulation, U1MB, VBXE, Rapidus, Axlon, and The!Cart. Debugger: Extended memory breakpoints and memory access, additional Verifier modes to detect more programming errors, additional 65C816 support, profiling within performance analyzer traces. Devices: Modem dial/handshaking sound simulation, power-cycle computer without turning off emulated devices, loopback serial device, new modes for booting executables, UI indication when a device has missing firmware. Disk: Improved support for realistic sector interleave patterns, one-click conversion of disk images between DOS/MyDos/SpartaDOS filesystems, I.S. Plate emulation support, quick revert for virtual R/W disks, automatic filename rename-on-write in Disk Explorer, disk drives dialog is now modeless. Platform: XAudio2 and WASAPI now supported for lower sound latency on Vista and above; native ARM64 build for better performance on Windows 10 on ARM (Snapdragon 835). UI: New unified System Configuration dialog with emulation settings collected and context sensitive help, new confirmation dialogs, options for what is unmounted or if auto-reboots occur on confirmation changes, improved command-line help, window caption customization, default profile for launch-with-image. Starting the new test releases: http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-3.20-test1.zip http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-3.20-test1-src.zip There is now a command in Options to switch between Registry and portable mode for settings. Portable mode has been supported for a while, but this automatically moves the settings over as well. Address CRC errors are now reported correctly for full disk drive emulators, and fixed error reporting issues specific to XF551 full emulation.
  7. This isn't aimed at Drac but I wanted to cover everything. The Atari PC was not saying the IBM PC was better than the ST, it was saying "hey, you want to buy a PC over an ST, okay, buy ours". It's no different than parents saying "don't have sex but if you do, please use a condom". And despite the Atari PC being cheap and being feature-rich, they weren't sold at Sears next to the Packard Bell garbage. Atari Corp got heavily flamed by the PC press because of the company's reputation and the lack of expansion ports even though it had most of the sought-out features built directly onto the motherboard like ATX but a decade before. The tone of Neil Harris' message here was to re-assure the active Atari 8-bit community who were going online with local bulletin boards, GEnie/Compuserve/Delphi, and also being active members in local users groups. They as a whole were convinced Atari Corp was going to cancel the 8-bit computer line at the blink of an eye*. And yes, Atari Corp was focused primarily on the ST then since it was supposed to be their future. This was a time when software publishers were dumping the Atari 8-bit line and using it as an example to the owners of the computer platforms with larger user bases that they'd stop developing for platforms with a large percentage of the user base actively engaged in software piracy. Getting the XE Game System out was an attempt to increase the Atari 8-bit computer line quickly, especially since the mass merchants weren't carrying the 65XE. The problem was that Atari Corp was also trying to sell the 7800 and the 2600. They were developing for too many platforms. And they found themselves where they couldn't stop developing for the 2600 since it was still selling well. These videos used to play on the tvs inside Federated after Atari Corp got suckered into buying the Federated Group chain. That in itself was a defense against computer dealers dropping the ST because it was tough to get ST inventory into the US because the Reagan Administration waited too long to restrict Japanese DRAM over price dumping until after almost all of the US companies were driven out of business [excluding Micron]. Consequently, Atari shipped about 80% of the STs over to Europe because the EC didn't impose tariffs at that time against Japanese DRAM. But the defensive strategy backfired because not only did Federated cook their books and Atari paid about $50 million too much for the chain but they hid their losses, not to mention a lot of former Atari ST dealers got angry over Federated and retaliated by pushing the Amiga instead which wasn't difficult to do after the Amiga 500 debuted. And add to that Jack Tramiel firing Shadoe Stevens, Mr. Fred Rated himself, was a huge mistake since probably 80% of Federated's popularity was due to their commercials. But speaking of that time, Federated would hire people from local Atari user's groups to sell the ST line and you could find a lot of Atari stuff there whereas it might be a chore to find at the local Toys R Us or Kay Bee. Although I never found the XG-1 light gun - separate of the XE Game System - anywhere except for an OEM non-branded one sold in a cardboard box at Commodore dealers. You also couldn't get any of the 7800 JoyPads that were almost exclusively sold to Europe even though they appeared in the product placement segments at the end of WWF matches on tv. Likewise, the local Atari ST dealers couldn't seem to get the ST Power Pads - the gray versions of what later became the Atari Jaguar JagPads - even when the STe line finally was released. Other funny things about the video... the light gun shown in some of the XE Game System videos there was the Sega Phaser painted white and Bug Hunt was referred to as Blast 'Em. The cartridge in the 7800 seems to be too thin in the side profile shots of the little girl playing with the 7800. Oh the memories of being a frustrated 7800 and 1040STf owner and user's group member as a kid back then...later an annoying shareholder who would bug the Tramiels at the annual meetings with his mighty 50 shares too. *It didn't help that the Tramiels outright cancelled the 1400XL and 1450XLD computers that James Morgan had simply put on ice and cancelled the 1090XL external expansion chassis or even killed Atari Corp's own previously announced 65XEP and the 65XEM**. The 65XEM got a lot of their hopes up that the AMY sound chip would finally debut and it would go to the 8-bits. Those of us in ST Land generally didn't know back then that Shiraz Shiviji (sic) had tried to get the AMY working in the ST during its early development but couldn't and they had to move on. Had we known that back then, a lot of us would've been as militant in demanding an AMY sound chip upgrade as we were with the Blitter chips. I guess we really weren't militant enough since Atari Corp never did come out with a viable Blitter upgrade for 520STm and 1040STf owners and GDOS also never was inserted into the TOS OS - as previously promised - even after Digital Research got off their duffs and finished it. I personally believe had the ST - or STe - been equipped with some Atari 8-bit'isms like SIO, a POKEY or 2, ATASCII and a 16-bit continuation of real Atari BASIC, that would've helped a lot of 8-bitters move up to the ST instead of being outright hostile to it, or, even worse for Atari Corp, supporting the Amiga. Atari Corp did do some things right with the 8-bitters, like getting Atari DOS 2.5 out to replace DOS 3.0, the SX212 modem which was ST and A8 compatible, the XEP80 80-column external card, and the XF551 to replace the 1050, but the XEP80 took forever to come out and Atari Corp failed to bring out monitors and 3.5 disc drives for the XE line as they had initially promised. Come to think of it, Atari Corp also failed to bring out Atari branded TVs and VCRs too. I think a lot of that had to do with Federated cratering financially right after Atari Corp acquired them. Nothing like losing $200 million+ off such a deal. **Even back then, it was common knowledge in the Atari community that Jack Tramiel supposedly hated video games and that he supposedly sat on the release of the 7800 in order to put the emphasis on the ST line. Consequently, this misnomer is still being repeated online often even though a lot of us have known for the past 4 or 5 years that that wasn't the case. The reality was, Atari Corp was selling video game inventory in 1984 and even before the 7800 was released, they were selling 5200s in bundles in the Atari Explorer magazine and were even modifying the 4-port inventory so they could use the tried and true RF switchbox the 2-ports used. They were also releasing more of the revisions of the CX52 joysticks and even Atari 8-bit computer dealers had them even if they weren't carrying the 5200 because 5200 owners were calling up Atari dealers listed in the phone book for replacement joysticks when theirs' "broke".
  8. Have YOU tried internal 4.8.01 + R2 rom ? how do you know i didn't try all games? There are some issues still -some games take you to mybios- BUT from there you can make them work. 9. This depends a lot on the type of debugging you are doing. Regarding the focus issue, I'd be interested in what scenarios you're seeing focus loss in. Also, make sure you're using a recent version, 2.30 or 2.40-test. I'm afraid I don't have tutorial videos, but here's a dump of tips: General The debugger has built-in help. Use [.help] to get a list of commands and [.help command] to get help on a specific command. Essential keyboard shortcuts: F8 (run/stop), F10 (step over), F11 (step into) In the command line, Up/Down accesses command history, Shift+Up/Down scrolls the output portion, and Enter repeats last command with continuation. Newer versions of the debugger support tabs; use View > Reset Window Layout if you have the old layout, and you should get the new, more compact default layout with stacked Registers/Disassembly/History. You can manually stack tabs by dragging them and hovering over the center of a docking diamond. If you are running Altirra through WINE, reset the font in Debug > Options > Font. It's supposed to be a monospace font, but WINE lacks one of the standard fonts. The default radix is mixed, which allows bare hex except in an expression: 10 = $10 = (16). Use [.base dec] or [.base hex] to force a different radix. Create a text file called startup.atdbg in the program dir if you have favorite commands you want to run on startup. Assemble/run setup If you are using MADS, build labels (-t) and a listing (-l). .lab and .lst files with the same name as an .xex will automatically get picked up if you start the .xex from the emulator. You really want labels loaded. If you are loading the executable from DOS, use the .loadsym command to manually load labels and listings. The /singleinstance command-line switch is very useful as it forces reuse of an already running instance of the emulator, regardless of the setting in Options. It allows a batch file to build the program and automatically launch it in the existing debugger without restarting it, keeping history and settings. If you have data files, consider using virtual disk mounting to avoid having to constantly rebuild a disk image. This is done through the [F] button in the Disk Drive dialog in versions through 2.20, and the right arrow drop-menu in 2.30+. The virtual disk driver monitors for file changes and will automatically update the virtual disk when a host file changes. You can also use the host device (H:) for this, if you are using CIO. When using MADS with a listing file loaded, you can automatically set conditional breakpoints through comments that begin with ;##ASSERT and ;##TRACE. Examples: [;##TRACE "dy = %d" db(deltar)] and [;##ASSERT dw(oldadr) >= dw(savmsc)]. TRACEs print out info using .printf syntax, and ASSERTs stop if the condition is false. These will show up in [bl] output if they were picked up correctly. 6502 debugging (immediate) Use [t] or F11 to step by one instruction, [o] or F10 to step over one instruction (skips calls and interrupts), and [g] to continue execution. Use [r] to get your bearings without looking at the Register window or to change registers: [r pc $0600]. Use [a8] to set aliases to match most Atari800 debugger commands. Use [.help a8] to see the mappings from Atari800 commands to Altirra commands. To set a breakpoint, use [bp address]. [bl] lists breakpoints, and [bc] clears breakpoints (by index, not address). The index is shown in [bl] output or when you set the breakpoint, i.e. "Breakpoint 0 set at address $A000." Use [bc *] to clear all breakpoints. To set a data breakpoint on an address, use [ba]. For instance, [ba r vcount] will set a read breakpoint on VCOUNT, and [ba w d300 L100] will break on any writes into the PIA region. To set a conditional breakpoint, use [bx "condition"]. This can be either a PC or a data breakpoint: [bx "write=irqen and pc>$c000 and (value&8)"] will fire when the OS enables the serial output complete interrupt. Breakpoints can automatically execute a list of commands when they fire, separated by semicolons. This is most useful in conjunction with the .printf command: [bp siov ".printf \"SIO request from $%04X\" (pc); g"]. The set tracepoint [bt] command makes this easier in 2.40-test. [k] dumps the call stack, if you want to know what called the current routine (or more precisely, where it will return to). To modify memory, use [e]: [e 4000 00 01 03]. To display memory, use db (display byte). There are also dw (word), dd (doubleword), df (decimal float), da (ATASCII string), and di (INTERNAL string). If you only want to view one byte or word, and particularly if you want to see decimal, use [? db(address)] or [? dw(address)]. [ln] does a lookup from address to symbol. [?] evaluates an expression. Useful for checking out state, and very useful when you're bad at math or just need a dec/hex conversion. [.vectors] dumps out a list of OS and CPU vectors. [.bank] and [.pia] show the memory banking and PIA state, respectively, and are useful for debugging extended memory usage bugs. Extended addressing syntax also allows the debugger to access xmem directly even if it isn't banked in: [db x:$8000]. [.map] shows the status of all memory layers. It's most useful to tell when you've accidentally enabled BASIC or the self-test ROM, or forgot to disable a cartridge. When debugging a program that takes over the whole machine, use [.unloadsym kerneldb] to unload the OS kernel database symbols so you don't see OS symbols where low page zero is reused. Quick-assemble small code fragments with [a address]. Type one line of asm at a time and hit Enter alone to end. It's useful to enable System > CPU > Stop on BRK instruction. 6502 debugging (deferred) Enable instruction-level history (System > CPU > Record instruction history). This enables the History debug pane, which is extremely useful for telling what happened after the fact. It has a tree-view that collapses loops, subroutine calls, and interrupts, making it easier to tell what's going on. I spend most of the time in the Console and History panes. For monitoring values over a long period of time and that correspond to on-screen activity, on-screen watches can be useful: [wb/ww] to watch a byte or word by address, and [wc] to clear. For instance, you can watch horizontal and vertical position values this way. Note that these only update once a frame. Path tracing can be useful to find out what the active regions of a program are. It is enabled either in CPU Options or with [.pathrecord on], and modified by the other path commands; executed code can be dumped with [.pathdump]. Another use for it is to find the exit path that responds to an input: use [.pathclear] to reset the path history, let the emulation run for a while to capture the loop path, then enable [.pathbreak on] and hit the joystick button or START to find out what responds to those buttons. 6502 optimization Profile View (Debug > Profile > Profile View) will show which portions of a program are using the most CPU time. Click on a header button to re-sort, and double-click on an entry to see annotated disassembly. The History window can also be used to assess performance: right click on the entry to a block and select [set Timestamp Origin], then right-click again and select [Timestamp Format > Show Cycles]. Every instruction in the history will then show when it relatively started in machine cycles. You can also use [Timestamp Format > Show Unhalted Cycles] to show how many CPU cycles were taken, ignoring DMA. Audio [.pokey] dumps POKEY state. Enable the audio monitor (Audio > Audio Monitor) to visually see what POKEY's audio channels are doing. Toggle individual audio channels with Ctrl+Alt+[1-4] to isolate squawking channels. BASIC [.basic] shows the current BASIC pointers and the memory taken by each region. [.basic_vars] dumps out all variables. [.basic_dumpline] dumps out a tokenized BASIC line by address. When running, i.e. not stopped in the debugger, shift+hover over an error message will translate the error code. Character I/O (CIO) [.tracecio on] will log all calls made to OS CIO, decoding parameters for some of them. It's most useful for figuring out what commands a program is issuing to DOS. The debug display (Debug > Window > Debug Display) can show you what is on the OS screen when your program crashes before ANTIC+GTIA have drawn it. [.ciodevs] dumps out all character devices registered in HATABS. [.iocb] dumps out the I/O control blocks. Disk I/O / SIO For sector-level access, enable the DISKCMD and HOOKSIO logging channels ([lfe diskcmd] / [lfe hooksio]). The debugger will then log which sectors are being read, and if regular OS SIO is being used, the SIO patch hook will also print out addresses. There are other useful logging channels: [lfl] to list. For hardware-level access, use [.traceser on] to get a dump of what bytes are going in and out of the serial port registers and whether overruns/underruns are happening. [bs sector] will fire a breakpoint when a particular disk sector is read. [.sio] dumps out the disk control block (DCB), which contains the current SIO request. [.diskdumpsec] will dump out a raw disk sector. You can explore the contents of any mounted DOS 2 or SpartaDOS disk by selecting Arrow -> Explore on a drive in the Disk Drives dialog. Files can then be dragged out of the Disk Explorer into the host filesystem. Graphics The display window will show the current beam position on screen as a yellow line, immediately below the beam position. [.antic] dumps ANTIC state, and [.gtia] dumps GTIA state. The go until scanline [gs] command is very useful for debugging graphics glitches. Typically I do [gs 240] or so until the glitch appears on-screen, then use the History window and the display list history to figure out what happened. The [gs] command automatically runs a full frame if you give it the vertical position that the beam is already on, so you can just spam it by alternating Up/Enter until a broken frame comes up. When execution is stopped, shift+hover over the display window will indicate beam position and display list activity for a point on screen. The display list history (.dlhistory) shows what ANTIC has executed. It's useful for telling whether something is going wrong with the display list. Conditional breakpoint expressions can include the horizontal and vertical beam position (hpos/vpos), so it's possible to have the debugger break when a DLI runs late or at the wrong time: [bx "pc=addr and vpos != 100"]. (2.40-test only) If your display list is glitching out when trying HSCROL tricks, enable Debug > Verifier > Abnormal playfield DMA. This will cause a break into the debugger when playfield DMA goes haywire when HSCROL is hit at the wrong time. Expansion hardware VideoBoard XE: [.vbxe] for general status, [.vbxe_bl] to dump a blitter command list, [.vbxe_xdl] to dump the extended display list, and [.vbxe_traceblits] to log blits. Ultimate1MB: [.ultimate] to dump status, [.ds1305] to dump real-time clock status. SIDE: [.ds1305] to dump real-time clock status. MyIDE/SIDE/IDEPlus: [.ide] to dump IDE status, [.ide_dumpsec] to dump out a sector, and [.ide_rdsec]/[.ide_wrsec] to do DMA to and from CPU memory.
  10. Many props to "therealbountybob," who is a fine Atarian and frequent contributor to the Atari scene, but I simply disagree. The Antic interviews are just about the purest form of GOLD that I can imagine, to my Atari-centric and retrocomputing-interested (in a more general sense) ears. Frankly, I *can't believe* how many heavy-hitters you boys have interviewed! It's beyond fantastic. How to distinguish between "Antic Interview" and "Antic Episode?" Well, quite obviously, Antic Episodes are titled "Antic Episode" and Antic Interviews are titled "Antic Interview." One need only click on what one desire; it's no more complicated than that. Understanding that simple process, I see no circumstances under which *any* content is "drowned under" any other content, for it is all listed independently. The work in (1) preparing the podcast in general, (2) taking the time to seek out and contact potential interviewees, and (3) taking the enormous time and effort to EDIT those interviews must be mind-boggling to amateurs such as myself. That's right, I'm an amateur. Or I would be. As opposed to Kevin and Randy, who are *EXPERTS* (have become so in short order!) in the art of the interview. In the past year and a half (or whatever?), I've listened to these guys not only become entertaining podcasters (which they sort-of were from episode 1), to excellent interviewers per se, as the number of interviews increases. Furthermore, Kevin and Randy are pretty-much indelibly becoming significant icons of Atari-8 history and folklore themselves, as they actively lay down the history of those who did that, previously. I'm much more than impressed; I am quite moved by the work (the time and the editing that I can't imagine) that those boys do, and I'm humbly ingratiated, every time I listen to either an interview, or the actual podcast itself. I'm astonished not only at the final presentation, but curious as to the many behind-the-scenes hours that probably went into it, completely unbeknownst to me. Should I (in an unlikely scenario) attempt to establish my own podcast, I'd take huge lessons from these fellows, and I probably couldn't even do it, at that. The monthly Antic podcast is now a regular treat, but the interviews - most professionally-conducted - are a super-bonus. Please continue! You're laying down (for the record) and archiving Atari history - from those who were actually there and remember (as well of those who were not) - at an alarmingly-pleasing rate! MORE INTERVIEWS, not less. To my limited knowledge, nobody has either attempted nor achieved such success in such an endeavor. It truly is incredible what you've done so far, to anybody of interest in the Atari. Please continue! You've pulled so many people out of Atari history that I'm flabbergasted. However, as mere suggestions to people who (obviously) already know what they're doing, could you possibly: (1) Contact Arthur Leyenburger. As far as I can remember, he was an author of Creative Computing's "Outpost: Atari." (also Analog Magazine). As I understand "Outpost: Atari," it went from Dave Small (already interviewed) to John J. Anderson (unfortunately deceased in the 1989 California Earthquakes but was amazing Atarian) and then to Arthur Leyenberger. It would be grand to hear from him. (2) Doug Neubauer, of POKEY and Star Raiders fame. The stellar Joe Decuir interview referencedhim. Sounds like a difficult man to get ahold of, but would be grand! Perhaps you can encourage participation in Decuir's upcoming book when you snag the interview. (3) Bob Puff from Computer Software Services, of Rochester, NY. Atari-inventor-extrordinaire/ inventor. (4) Clayton Walnum - faboulous Atari man/columnist. (5) David H Ahl / Betsey Staples - Believe to be married couple (at one time) who ran Creative Computing and then Atari Explorer magazines. (6) Darek Michocka - First emulator for A8 on ST and then on PC (7) Atari800win - whoever that was ( Alterrra - from AtariAge user Phaeron All of these people would be of extereme interest. Perhaps not all will wish to participate, but it would be really nice to hear one of your interviews from any of them! Please keep up the excellent work!
  11. Finally got around to releasing version 2.20 of my emulator, Altirra. Link to download and full changelist: http://www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html Some highlights: Hardware support: MyIDE II and Ultimate1MB emulation added; fixes for SIDE, SIC!, and flash memory emulation. Debugger: Many changes and improvements, including better support for accessing extended/hidden memory and additional aids for debugging PBI, IDE, and CIO code. UI: Display code rewritten to support higher quality status overlays, some UI-less menu commands are now available in full screen mode, keyboard shortcuts are now configurable, shift-hover gives help for BASIC and DOS error codes, and copy text now works when emulation is stopped. Disk: You can now pre-format new disk images for DOS 2 and mount a host directory as a virtual disk image. Also fixed several DOS filesystem handling bugs in the disk explorer. IDE: VHD images are now supported. Fixes for a couple of emulation issues in POKEY and ANTIC. Major rewrite of the built-in OS kernels for better compatibility. As usual, thanks to everyone that's been trying it out and providing feedback.
  12. Hi, It's been a while since the last update because I was somewhat busy. AspeQt version 0.5 is now available, you can download it here. Apart from the usual bug fixes - one was especially nasty and I believe it was the one causing flashjazzcat's troubles but I'm not sure - here are some of the new features: Higher speeds than x3 (57600) can be achieved if the serial port adaptor supports them Go to the options menu and check "Use non-standard speeds" and select the Pokey divisor. Lower means faster, 8 is the same as 3x and 0 is approximately 6x. If your serial port adaptor and DOS supports it, you may go up to divisor 0. Only tested with a ft232r based adaptor (see below for details). I'm not sure if it will work with 16C950 based ports. New EXE booter with optional high speed SIO routines and drag-drop support for files with EXE, COM and XEX extensions Just drop an EXE into any slot. Autoboot dialog will appear. The boot code is changed but it's a bit experimental. So expect some compatibility issues. The high speed option can be selected under Options/Emulation. The high speed code is courtesy of hiassoft (see below) but don't blame him if anything goes wrong. I litterally butchered his code Preliminary printer emulation No printing yet. But you can view and save the printer text output to a file. It's under File/View printer text output. Text conversion for image explorer is now working properly under Windows It will use proper CR/LF pairs instead of Unix-style CR only for line endings. Old temporary files resulting from crashes are now removed when AspeQt starts It may slow down your first start if AspeQt crashed a lot before this release. Log file It will create a file named aspeqt.log in your temporary folder. I hope it will help me inspect crashes more deeply. I want to thank candle for donating one of his awesome I/O boards. It is now partially supported by AspeQt. I couldn't keep all my promises yet though, synchronous transfer is not yet supported. But I did many tests and results are promising. In the near future I hope that AspeQt will be breaking speed records using synchronous I/O. I'll discuss my tests in another thread but 480000 bps seems very doable. I also want to thank HiassofT, not because of his endless knowledge but because he's kind enough to share it unselfishly. He even got his hands dirty and provided a patch that enabled Linux backend to go up to POKEY divisor 0 with a suitable serial port adaptor One more surprise for the next release: A polish fellow named Krzysztof Pyrkosz offered to translate AspeQt to Polish. I'm not sure if he's a member here but I would be surprised if he isn't. So, hi there And thanks everybody for testing, bug reports, feature requests etc. I'm looking forward for more, let's see what I screwed up this time edit: spelling.
  13. Super Mario Bros., Excite Bike, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, and even the original version of Punch Out! were all Nintendo arcade ports. When I was playing the emulator on my friend's Wii, I couldn't believe how bad Rampage and Double Dragon were on the 7800. I don't remember them being that bad back in the day but the sound was atrocious [due to the lack of the Pokey chip] and I can't imagine the graphics were better than the NES versions [although in fairness, there was no 2 player mode on the NES for DD]. Even Xenophobe was a rather bad port too [i don't remember the Lynx version being bad]. If I recall, Xenophobe was published by Atari but DD and Rampage were published by Activision. 7800 splash screen (I forgot what the XEGS looks like at boot) and/or is that a Commodore 1702 monitor? Too bad Atari didn't have their own composite monitors. Or monitors that supported both RGB and composite. Surprised they didn't! BTW: they sure do have that XEGS parked unnaturally close to the monitors. Where are the cables?? My money says a different Atari system is responsible for that display. lol You mean XEGS carts didn't have the same splash screen as the 7800 titles? If that's the case, I'm rather surprised the Tramiels didn't "recycle" it. Wasn't there an Atari [Corp.] branded composite monitor in Europe? That's actually something that surprised me about Atari Inc. during the 400/800/XL days...why they were so content to have Atari 8-bit owners buy composite monitors from Commodore and Philips which were both competitors [Commodore computers and Magnavox Odyssey, etc.]. To think Atari Corp. later discussed marketing Atari branded television sets around the time they started selling Atari branded calculators. As for the 2600 vs. 7800 argument, I think it would be fitting to suggest that Atari should've continued selling the 2600 as long as they could but not allocate precious development dollars on titles for it at the expense of the 7800. As for 7800 vs. XEGS development dollars, unless I am mistaken, there wasn't much development dollars necessary to take already existing Atari 8-bit disk based games and "convert" them to cartridge versions. In fact, that might be one of the reasons why Atari was gung-ho about the XEGS; they got to recycle and repackage content whereas converting those very same titles to the 7800 would have been another expense. Furthermore, this is probably why the Tramiels opted to cancel the 7800's expansion port...they probably concluded that if a consumer wanted a computer keyboard they should just buy the XEGS. That seems like a sure fit considering their hyped - at the time - logic of color coding anything with the 8-bit computer line in red and products related to the Atari ST line were to be colored blue. They actually thought this would differentiate products successfully in mass market outlets and they actually bragged about this in Atari Explorer magazine [although I think Antic/STart ridiculed it] that such retailers wouldn't need to have knowledgeable sales staff because of it. Regarding left over 8-bit parts as the reason for the XEGS, perhaps Atari had leftover custom and RAM chips that had been allocated for the 65XE that wasn't selling so well at the time and they opted to repackage that with the redesigned mobo for the XEGS. The other reason for the XEGS was to shore up the Atari 8-bit line to increase the user base since software publishers were looking for any excuse to dump the Atari 8-bit line because of the alleged rampant piracy on the platform [even if there were far more C64 owners who were software pirates]...
  14. Hi guys, We uncovered some RBP (ST Codename "Rock Bottom Price!) Internal documents, and the ST was initially going to have the AMY chip, which was a revolutionary upgrade to the Pokey chip (seen in a few demo 65XEM's), but unfortunately it didn't happen and the ST was being built for the 1985 January CES, so the 6 month deadline to complete the system just didn't give engineers enough time to implement it. Anyway, as most of the original AMY engineers had now left Atari, they were having a difficult enough time trying to understand the new chip, and although it could have been possible in the long term, Atari simply didn't have the luxury of time - I'm sure a few more wish-list items didn't make the final cut on the original ST design spec, but it was an amazing feat to build the ST in the time alloted - and yet a very capable system was born to the world. The YM-2149 was ready and available, used in many computers and arcade machines, and could be mass produced on demand for the new Atari with the addition that this chip also drove the Atari ST Parallel port (in conjunction with the Multi Function Peripheral (MFP) 68901). But, in its defence - there are some great sounds produced when used right! Check out this article: http://www.atari-explorer.com/articles-ST-music.html Karl
