I bought an "agranlund" 4MB RAM expansion for my 520ST. Its an open-source project that you can order up and make yourself. I bought a ready-assembled one from an Ebay seller. It seemed an easy way to add some functionality to the old 520ST. You can download the project here: https://github.com/agranlund/STRam The Youtube channel "Adrian's Digital Basement" featured the same expansion, although Adrian made the mistake of adding sockets to the install which meant it did not fit with the keyboard. The install is not for the faint-hearted. The instructions on the github page are scant. Removing 16 RAM chips is not a trivial operation. The 520ST motherboard is better made than much of the Tramiel era Atari PCBs, but it is still easily damaged. Note: Leave the bypass caps in place. These are still needed for the RAM expansion. With the RAM chips removed and the expansion board installed, I followed Adrian's example and tied CAS1L, CAS1H and RAS1 to ground, and A9 to +5V. This allowed the ST to boot up with 512K RAM. Rather than run the lines under the board, I simply used pin 8 of U16 for ground, and pin 16 for +5V. With the initial install done, next I had to connect the CAS1L, CAS1H and RAS1 lines. Rather than solder lines directly to the MMU, I ran the lines to the pads on the top side of the motherboard using this guide from the Exxos forum: https://exxosforum.co.uk/atari/last/STM4MB/index.htm. User Verault on the atari-forum.com reported that the CAS1L and CAS1H lines did NOT need to be swapped (https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=43064), however on my install I absolutely did have to swap these. Failing to do so resulted in a GEM desktop with corrupted menu items. Note: I don't know if the silk screen on the expansion board is wrong, or the guide on exxosforum, but the picture is of my working install. This boosted the ST to 1MB. The A9 line needs to be run to MMU pin 64. I liked Adrian's idea of a switch to set the A9 to +5V which limits the ST to 1MB for compatibility with some software that objects to 4MB of RAM. I placed a small switch next to the cartridge port which is held in place with hot-glue. When reassembled, the switch can only be accessed with tweezers or a pen tip, but that's fine to me, as I do not want to accidentally knock it when the machine is running. Cartridges can still be inserted with the switch in the 1MB position. Switched to 4MB it can prevent some cartridges to be inserted, but I don't have many so that's not really a concern. The +5V (force 1MB) is taken from the cartridge port. With 4MB of RAM, booting from the Satan hard disk would be nice. But TOS 1.0 does not seem to support this, so I replaced the ROM with TOS 1.4. It took a couple of attempts to get the ROM chips in the right order: With the case reassembled the ST would not even power up. I eventually tracked this down to the top shield shorting on the RAM chips on the expansion board. Since I like having the top shield in place, as it adds some support for the keyboard, I had to add a strip of Kapton tape to the underside of the shield. The MMU had to be re-seated after the install, and all socketed ICs had to be firmly inserted several times before achieving a reliable boot. Finally with everything reassembled, I can play Frontier off of a hard disk on the 520ST I posted this here as I found the install guide frustratingly light on details. I hope this might help others considering this upgrade.

Hi - This is my first attempt to troubleshoot any ST. Also I am a novice when it comes to electrical matters and I don’t know how to read a schematic so please go easy on me 😁 This 520ST came to me with a frozen power rocker switch (in the off position) and an original PSU that I measured showing the 5V pins were putting out 14V instead of 5. So bought and wired-up a new PSU and I replaced the rocker switch with a new one. When I fired it up for the first time I got a glorious desktop screen!!!! I was so excited!! I switched it off, plugged-in the mouse and switched it back on. Nothing. Removed mouse. Nothing and nothing ever since. I took power readings at the pad circled in red on the back of the PCB with and without the 520 power rocker switch on (see images below). Do my power readings seem normal? Is 30V on the two ground pins normal when on? For all my power measurements I had the black probe on the ‘COM’ terminal of my new PSU and the red probe on the individual pins on the back of the 520 PCB. The pins that I believe are the 7 pins of the power connector. Is my method of testing the power on these pins valid (black probe on the PSU ‘COM’ terminal)? ===== Picture of the PCB for identification. Shown with diagnostic cart inserted. When I got the one and only boot to a desktop I did not have the diag cart installed. I was just seeing if the diag cart made any difference. It does not. I believe the 7pins circled in red are for the power connection. These are the pins I read the voltages for. My multimeter black probe was on the ‘COM’ terminal of the PSU. My voltage readings on the pins from Left to Right with 520 switch both off and on. Do these readings look OK/normal? Assuming these voltage readings are OK and given the fact that my first power-on got me to a desktop and no screen image since… What are the recommended next troubleshooting steps? TIA Note - I detect no hot or even warm board components. No bulging or leaking caps.

Hi - Does anyone know of a good replacement for the on/off power rocker switch for the 520ST? Mine is stuck and will not budge at all. Unlike the 1040 the 520's power switch is mounted vertical and is attached directly to the PCB. I am not finding any good replacements on PCB-Way. What kind of power specs do I need for such a switch for the 520ST? TIA On Digikey I find some toggle switches like the one pictured below which look like they may fit. What kind of power specs do I need for such a switch for the 520ST? I would like to find a rocker switch like the original above rather than a toggle switch like below. However, I will settle for whatever works.

Hi - TIA for any replies!! 1) Can you confirm if this is the correct power brick for the 520ST? 2) Where is a good source for such information on the ST line? 3) Is there a great FAQ for the ST line like the one Michael Current maintains for the Atari 8bits? 4) Can you share a diagram of the pin-out of the power brick so I can test it?

'Morning all, Currently in the process of repairing a poorly 520STfm. This is a UK 520, and it has found itself in sunny Australia, where the voltage is the same (220-240v). Board is nice and clean, no issues with burst caps or any other visible damage. The main symptom has been no power. I am replacing the PSU caps based on the Techwiki Astec ASP34 (Mine is ASP34-2). After removing all of them, I note most of the PSU caps have leaked at some point, so I have cleaned up the bottom & top of the board. Please see the photos. One of them has explosively decompressed out the side ( C7 ) . A couple of components also look burnt and/or damaged. Could anyone please assist in identifying the components in the pictures so I can replace them? I have pointed to them the best my limited paint skills allow. Thanks in advance all.

First things first: I am not acquainted nor familiar with the ST series of computers but will do my best to answer any questions. "Working condition" means that I connected this system to a monitor (SC1224) and mouse and external floppy drive (to access sysinfo for screenshots), powered on the system and arrived at the desktop GUI. 1-Meg Atari 520ST, working REHOMED $145, plus shipping. (UPS or FedEX / Origin ZIP: 48857 / Weight: 14 lbs including packing materials) PayPal accepted, Friends & Family as I am not a business. Please review all included photos as to physical condition of the unit. Notes: The electrical tape was there when I adopted this a couple years ago. I assume the modder who upgraded the memory? Someone more familiar with this line of computers would know, I'm hoping.

First things first: I am not acquainted nor familiar with the ST series of computers but will do my best to answer any questions. "non-working condition" means that I connected this system to a monitor (SC1224) and mouse, powered on the system and arrived at the desktop GUI with a garbled display (see included screenshot). Atari 520ST, non-working $75, plus shipping. (UPS or FedEX / Origin ZIP: 48857 / Weight: 14 lbs including packing materials) PayPal accepted, Friends & Family as I am not a business. Please review all included photos as to physical condition of the unit. Notes: Beyond seeing the garbled display, I didn't check anything else on this unit. There is damage at the front right corner, however, evidenced in the last two pictures.

I have gotten heavy into telnet BBSs and became rather impressed by the ST terminal program, TAZ, that allows 16 color ANSI emulation at medium res (2-bit color, of course) by way of color interlacing. Kind of like Megaroids and Quantum Paint, in approach. Anyway, I wrote about it a little and have a video showing the effect. For those interested. http://www.bytecellar.com/2017/06/18/four-colors-into-sixteen-terminal-innovation-on-the-atari-st/ bp

So, I have a bunch of Atari stuff for sale. I'm not sure as to what to price it (I'm not an Atari guy, I'm a Nintendo guy), and I'd like it to go to a Atari collector or someone who will put it to use/appreciate it. I'm not looking to make a killing. I just want a fair/going price for the stuff. It all works. The list consists of: Atari 520ST - Good shape - powers on/runs Atari 1040ST - Good shape - powers on/runs Atari 520ST - poor shape - powers on/runs 3.5 SF354 Atari 850 Atari 810 - 5.25 XM 301 410 Cassette Monitor SC1224 It's a rough list. I imagine most of you on here will know more about what I have. I have photos. Some of them are doubles. I want to make sure you can see the condition of the items. https://imgur.com/a/doqNz

I have been trying to get my Atari 520ST to work with an old external floppy SF354. Firstly the SF354 is the new type, with a PCB that has some chips on it. The floppy drive that came with it does not work. I plugged in an Amiga A600 floppy drive and this works well. I assume that is a double density single sided floppy drive. So I am trying to get a Gotek USB floppy emulator with HxC firmware to work with this external drive interface. It doesn't. I've been suggested elsewhere this maybe because the Gotek is double sided. I have no idea what files I am supposed to have on the HxC firmware Gotek for the Atari ST, and how to ensure it is behaving as single sided rather than double sided. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Nick

Well, nobody will go abroad just to see/hear such stuff but if You're close to Danzig, You might just consider this. YM-DIGITAL the Atari 520ST band - along with the drummer Pinokio - will play a gig at "RetroKomp /LOAD ERROR 2017" multiplatform party, taking a place in 20-22.10.2017. The club's name is "Scena Muzyczna GAK", its address is: Powstańców Warszawskich Street no. 25, 80-152 Gdańsk, Poland. GoogleMaps: http://tiny.pl/gd8dh The party's site: http://retrokomp.org/?lang=en_US The band's site: http://ym-digital.i-demo.pl/ The club's site: http://www.scenamuzyczna.pl/ The concert might sound like this but of course with ST instead of Falcon. Another thing is, I dunno how about Factor6 but I don't have enough of material, so I intend to play some of my Falcon and TT songs too. We will play in 20.10.2017. But if You'd be interested in ATARI XL/XE too, then a day later - 21.10.2017 - in the same place, Pinokio will play a solo gig with ATARI 8bit and drums. Which definitely will sound like this Regards. Y

I have set up my 520St after 25 years. Surprised at how much of the system is still in working order. The causualtes are: The mouse doesn't process the clicks. On of my 3.5 drives doesn't work. Years ago I used the system as an emulation tool. I was an embedded systems program consultant. I used the software package PC-Ditto to run emulators that I had on 5.25 floppies that run via MS-DOS. Unfortunately PC-Ditto need as MS-DOS boot disk that I no longer have. It's been years and I could use some pointers on how I go about obtaining an old PC boot disk that will fit on a single sided 3.5 diskette. A similar problem arose when I brought up Magic Sac. I get to the point where the emulator shows the Mac icon smiling at me wanting a Magic Mac diskette with a Mac Program and the Finder on it. I have no idea where those ended up. Is there any where one can purchase, or obtain otherwise, Mac software that old that will work with the Magic Sac 4.2? It's been a kick bringing up some stuff I wrote using Personal Pascal and seeing how dated they seems today, Also a kick going though the massive Tackle Box documentation and thinking never again! I even brought up Minx and remembered the 25 year old username and password. Any help out here is appreciated. Stay warm, GJW

I have a 1040ST, a couple of 520STs, several floppy drives, an external hard drive, a color monitor and one or two B/W monitors, cables, power supplies, mice, lots of original software, even a Hybrid Arts SMPTE sync box that I do not use any more. Anybody interested in this stuff? I am in Northwest Florida. Thanks
