  1. Hi everyone, I'm a complete n00b and I'm looking for some advice. I've dusted off my old 600xl which was a hand-me-down from my uncle back in the late 80s and decided that it would be a great project to get it back working again. Upgrade it and show it to my uncle, who's now in his 60s. its a stock 600xl, PAL region, membrane (mylar I think) keyboard. I've created a twitter thread here documenting my progress to date: So far I've given things a general clean and retro-brightened the case and that of the 1010 cassette deck. I've checked the PSUs, 600xl is fine but the tape drive doesn't work. I've sourced one that will do the tape drive from my parts bin. Everything went back together fine, hooked it up to the TV, turned it on and very surprisingly got the "ready" prompt. Unfortunately the keyboard isn't working with the exception of reset, option, select, start, and break. Thinking it was membrane oxidation, I stripped the keyboard back down and used a magic sponge to clean all the traces. I was surprised at how well that worked! I also swapped around the 2x 4051 chips and reseated C012294-19 (POKEY, I think) to see if that would make a difference. Unfortunately not, same as before only the silver buttons & break work. Those keys were enough to get into the diagnostics; memory checked out ok but no sound over the antenna cable. So I'm looking for a bit of guidance on where to go next. Pokey dead? I can imagine they're hard to come by these days. Some googling lead me to something called POKEYMAX. Keeping in mind that I'd like to upgrade the memory too, what options do I have? Advice and guidance welcomed! Thanks T
  2. So I want to get data tapes for my 600XL, but XC12 tape recorders are easily over $100! I'm a total cheapskate, so I was wondering if there's any chance of an alternative. Will a plain old audio cassette player do if I have the right hookups for it? And if not, what are some cheaper alternatives?
  3. I have an Atari 800XL PAL unit with Supervideo XL mod that I paid a good bit for from Germany. The keyboard in it had a stuck key. I confirmed it was mechanical. Air did not help so I took the membrane loose. Apparently a mistake. Replacing after cleaning, only the function keys work. Reseated cable repeatedly. I was going to buy another unit on eBay and take the keyboard, but they are too expensive, so I will not be watching scene demos on this but shelving it, it seems. I can't afford a new one. (Someone is currently selling a PIECE OF FOAM from the box of a 600XL for $32....) Before I close the door on my A8 experience for probably a decade, I wanted to see if anyone had a spare keyboard for the unit that I could buy for a fairly low price. Probably not, but I wanted to take one more chance before I put this broken system away. Thanks. :-/ bp

    Atari 600XL

From the album: RetroElectroDad Computer Collection

The machine that got me into Ataris, I upgraded from the TI-99/4a to this very Atari 600XL. Later I added the memory module to take it to 64K and then the 1050 disk drive and was hooked.

  5. Hi all, Yesterday, I finished restoring a 600XL that belonged to my dad back in the day. After finishing up an inspection and Retrobriting, I became interested in the serial number (which sadly peeled off after removing the yellowing but, I took a picture beforehand). I'm waiting on a power supply to arrive, so I'm using my time to learn more about the 600XL. I've browsed around and have not seen anything similar to my number. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Also, I can provide pictures of the chips and box if needed (which should narrow it down since it's the 1984 Olympics box). Thanks ahead of time for taking the time to read this.
  6. Hey all - I had a great opportunity to pick up some Atari 8-bit stuff last weekend for really cheap at a convention. I scored an Atari 800 (48k) with what appears to be the original shipping box (including foam inserts for the side of the machine), a 1200XL that seems to be heavily modified, and external keyboard for the 1200XL (keep reading...), 5 floppy disk drives (goodness), a sealed Donkey Kong, and a few other odds and ends. I was lucky to get all of this, and my only experience with 8-bit Atari computers was with games via the XEGS about a decade ago. I happily dug out Centipede, Megamania, and some others to fire up the 800. Gorgeous. That system has been cleaned and is waiting reassembly after everything is dry. Now then - this 1200XL. Several things about this guy. First of all, there is a DB-25 port on the front left side to connect an external keyboard. The bottom of the machine denotes the following mods in Sharpie - "FEHR Video Mod+" and "320k Mod - Lawless." Included was what looks to be a homemade external keyboard of sorts. It is a rather industrial-looking keyboard from somewhere (where?) that has been screwed into the bottom shell of a 600XL. It is so...weird. I chatted a lot with the seller about various things, but I didn't ask about the keyboard. Now I am intrigued. The 6 key is taped on with that green tape. The post-it on the 1200XL states "External keyboard does not work. video issues" I have been around the block many times with soldering, modding, etc., with numerous gaming systems. I have no experience or knowledge of what is out there as far as Atari 8-bit computer mods. So I look forward to cracking this 1200XL and keyboard open to see what the heck is going on. I plan to do it as soon as I get the 800 put back together and off the workbench. Can you guys offer any knowledge or opinions on this stuff - Where does that keyboard come from? What are your thoughts on the 1200XL mods that were mentioned? Apparently the video mod is having issues - so I have to either fix it or reverse it/change it for another mod. I know the built-in keyboard for the 1200XL tends to have issues, but I would prefer to just fix it (I saw a method for that in one of the threads here) than mess with this external thing - nevertheless, it sure it weird/interesting.
  7. Hi everyone! I just listed an Atari 1090 XL Expansion System, a prototype model of which ~50 were produced and only ~5 with the original beige cover, on eBay. It was designed in 1983 for use with the 600XL and 800XL and a few expansion cards were made (but I'm not lucky enough to have any). http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/291849042910? I started it at 99¢. Let me know if you have any questions or comments and Happy collecting! – Jake
  8. Hello there, I got a quick question for all you atari expert here I'v recently found an old atari 600XL with no power supply or other cables. I've looked up the input voltages and hooked the atari up to a simple 5v, 1.5A ac-dc converter. Now when I turn the atari on I get a red power light on, but my tv cannot find any channels on the rf-output (it can find the signal for the nintendo, so i suppose the tv can't be the problem?) I also came some information that said you should not use an alternative power supply for the 600XL, at least not an unreglated. What exactly are the requirement for the atari 600XL power supply? I've measured the voltages from mine. With the atari off, it gives 5.23 volts. When I switch the atari on it goes to 5.07 volt. That's 3%. Should I assume that the converter I have is unregulated? Or is 5.07 too low? Any information on the matter would be welcome, I hope I can get this nice machine to work again. I'm going to try building a video cable for the monitor connected today, to see if only the rf-module is busted. Thank you! Bram
  9. Looking for some games that don't require too much memory too run. I have a 600XL and no RAM upgrade for it yet, so just have the basic 16K. I found a version of Flappy Bird that was real good. Any ideas? Try searching basic programs in old magazines maybe? Thanks. -sirhempanite89
  10. So I have a "Chelco 1983 rev 8B" board and it has 4 green chicklet shaped capacitors that appear that will get it the way with my 1meg upgrade. I could change them with low profile but am i loosing electrical benefit if i do? Douglas
  11. I recently got an Atari 600xl and its only displaying in black and white. I'm using the same video hookup I use for my 7800. Am I missing something here?
  12. I am wondering if the Atari 1064 64K "cartridge" will be compatible with the 64K 2 chip mod that i have successfully installed? 128K? thanks Douglas
  13. Does anyone know where you can buy springs for the 600xl keyboard? Thanks for any help.
  14. Hi Guys, I need some help, please... I recently bought a 600XL off of eBay, picked it up tested it - all working. Then opened it and found to my delight that all the chips were socketed! A hardware project in the making. First things first - upgrade to 64k. I tried bending a pin on the IC living at U5 and broke the off - the IC can be replaced, right? So, two questions from this (slightly less than competent) amateur modder... 1) I need to replace the IC at U5... is there any difference between an 74LS158 and a 74LS158N IC? 2) If I do this upgrade can I not upgrade the memory futher - i.e. if want an ultimate 1Mb or similar do I a) have to reverse the 64k upgrade, b) leave it in, it's necessary, or c) nope this is the only memory upgrade for a 600xl? Cheers!

  16. This is now a "quest" -- and way more interesting to me than an adventure game! I've been doing a little research on the 600XL video issues, trying to find a "Quick and Easy" solution such as the excellent information in the "Quick and Easy Video Upgrade for the 800XL." http://www.atariage....rade-for-800xl/ That thread actually contains a reference to an article on the 600XL: (BTW, the author of this also did an article on bringing the ram in a 600XL up to 64K.) http://atrey.karlin....i/600xlmon.html This method is way easier than SuperVideo 2.1. Has anyone done this mod, and does it give good results? I wonder if it can be "tweaked" to improve the results? There is also the Best Electronics 600XL kit shown on this page: http://www.best-elec...800xl.htm#600XL Has anyone done the B.E. kit mod, and is it the same as the mod shown above? Or is the BE mod a kit of missing parts to make the 600XL video functional through a normal monitor jack? Does it provide good results, or do you then have to "mod" the results to get good video? (If the 600XL video ends up looking like a stock 800XL, that's probably not a good thing.) -Larry
