  3. Just finished putting together and playing with a prototype board to plug in arcade sticks and buttons. Works with 2600+ and a real 7600 with two buttons. I added an adjustable 555 timer through a transistor to enable turbo-fire on the left button. There are two logic gates to control the turbo fire with the main button push. Next is to turn the prototype into a circuit board, but I'm very happy with it. I installed the board in an 8-bitdo arcade stick and it's great fun on games like Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe. It's nice to tune in the auto-fire get a nice cadence for blasting those rocks!
  4. Thanks to all who participated in the 2023 Atari Homebrew High Score Contest. It was another slow season. And now like last year it time for a change, a name that is, what started out as Harmony Games where players picked the homebrew 2600 games than decided by voters in the Atari Homebrew Awards, and later changed to Atari Homebrew High Score Contest last year now including homebrew 7800 games. instead taking request like before for names I just deiced to call it the AVC Games with the subtitle: Playing The Best Scoring Games From The Atari Homebrew Awards. Like the subtitle suggests: we are playing the games that have scoring systems that was a winner of The AHA's. the stipulations on deciding what games from the top 3 winners from AHA are used in the AVC Games are: The game must have a scoring system (either be normal scoring or best time) the game must be one player (two player games are disqualified) and the ROM must be public to be played on flash cart or emulator (we will always use the current version of the ROM) For now we are still doing 2600 (Harmony Games Division) and 7800(Concerto Games Division) games. Due to format changes of the AHA's the rounds been altered: Harmony Games Division: 1st round: Work of Progress (stays the same as past Harmony games: Original for normal points (10 for top score 1 for last and after) Port for bonus points(9 for the top score and 1 for last and after) 2nd round: Completed Games, reverting back to Original format similar scoring for Work in Progress 3rd round : 4k and below only for normal points Concerto Games Division: 4th round: Work in Progress (same points as Harmony Games Work In Progress) 5th (final round) Completed (same points as Harmony Games 4k and below) Score submitting remains the same Atari Age (Harmony Games topic for 2600, Concerto Games for 7800) AVC Online Facebook group(topic will be set up) and AVC online website on the AVC Games page via the form. Harmony Games Division Starts on March 11th,2024 at Noon Central Concerto Games Division starts on Second Monday of the Month after Harmony Games Division ends. This topic will be used for the Leader board updates as well as announce when the games start

Banished to a deadly labyrinth, you are tasked with defeating the four keepers of the maze - only then can you face the Great Sphinx, who exiled you here. The labyrinth contains legendary artifacts - feathers of legendary birds and beasts that might aid you. Power might be found here, but you genuinely wish for escape, and the only way out is through the Sphinx. • Explore a vast scrolling maze made up of over 500 screens! • Fly and fight your way to find new abilities and powers! • Five bosses to find hidden among the winding passages! *Note*: the game does work with the Modern Controller, but the emulator has a feature that can lead to frustration.   7. So I never had a 7800, which is weird because we had the original 2600, the 2600 JR and the 5200. I have some 7800 games on emulation that I have played, and I received my 2600+ in late November and purchased 14 7800 cartridges. I have the ones I wanted the most, but I am curious as to what other 7800 titles I might want? I have taken Mat Mania out of contention since I have just seen it for the first time. So I am curious as to what everyone else has as their top 5 games that they have or love.
  8. As I don't happen to own any 2600 compatible flash carts I tried to make something simple. Google told me that this idea has failed before. But that may be because of speed considerations. As the 2600+ just dumps the cart my guess is that it is better suited for a Pico approach. The image tells it all: glue a Pico on a PCB that has a 2600+ connector. After that solder the wires to correct places on the pcb. Once I get the soldering done I will try to copy relevant code from nickbild/picoROM: Emulate ROM chips with a Raspberry Pi Pico. (github.com) and see it I can get this to work with 2600+ dumper. The goal is to program a 4k game into RAM and when it is ready I switch the ROM emulation on and the dumper would read the cart image from the Pico's RAM.
  9. Hi @Ben from Plaion and @Albert Here is my suggestion for what to include in the dumper fix. The dumper creates a 128 byte header for the game and sends it to the ProSystem emulator. Currently the dumper picks a few bits from the ProSystem.dat to guess what the header should look like. Having a copy of this 128 byte header in the ROM would take out the guessing work. Simply let developers make a copy of the a78 header by adding the header at $FF00 in the game ROM. This is the logical place for it as the signature for NTSC carts is at $FF80. The cart would work correctly on a real Atari 7800 (NTSC) and thanks to the info in the ROM the dumper could send the correct settings to the emulator as well. If the data in the dumped rom has the data: (version_byte+'ATARI7800') at $FF00 the dumper just copies the 128 bytes from there and sends it to the emulator followed by the dumped game. If the (version_byte+'ATARI7800') is not there then the dumper goes back to guessing. Oh, and thanks for making a really modular and elegant 2600+. The more I have played with it - the more I like it. Edit: I just added a small example file with the header in the ROM.   13. I'm working out a sale for most of my vintage CPU collection in order to take advantage of @Albert's sale, support some homebrewers, and support AA. I should have at least $500 to spend, maybe a bit more if I can sell the rest. So, the big question is, what should I buy? I'm interested in 2600/5200/7800 games on, some for each system. Homebrews preferred over hacks. In 1989 two significant things happened in the history of Atari ST vertical shooters: First, Xenon 2 was released, which is considered by many to be the best shooter of all time on the ST, and also Shoot ‘em Up Construction Kit or SEUCK was hit the market. The other games we have to look at are relatively unique, at least as far a unique can go in this genre, but overall it was not a great year for ST vertical shooters in terms of quantity, but what was released was a step up visually and technically from the average in 1988.   17. I'm mass buying Atari 2600, 5200, 7800. In doing so I've ended up with some cartridges and cassettes for which I do not have a home. I'd like to trade them for most anything 2600, 5200, or 7800. This includes broken things as my students and I will fix them up. I have attached an image of what I have currently.   18. I always wanted to make one, but could never get Robotron to work in my PAL 7800. I have made them in the past for VECTREX and usb, but not for the 7800. Not sure there would be a need for them really? If I get at least 10 ‘ yes please ‘ I’ll add it to my list of projects. Here is the pc one I made for someone.
  19. Hello, I know this is a strange dual platform question. But I am thinking of adding a S-Video mod to both my 7800 and 800XL. From what I can see there is the UAV (800XL and 7800) and the Spectre AV (800XL) ones available. The idea in both cases is to run these through a Retrotink 5x. As I am not the best at soldering, I wonder if anyone can recommend someone who could mod the machines in Europe? Both are PAL devices, and I would prefer an EU based company/person in order to avoid customs issues. However, non-EU could be tolerated 🙂 It would be ideal if the same company/person could do both machines.
  20. 🌑 Zoom zoom, boom boom! 💥 Is there anything more that needs to be said? Well, a little more wouldn't hurt.. It's quite playable, but it's early, so expect a few bugs & differences compared to the arcade. The demo is short however it will loop endlessly A-E (technically A through D, E isn't mapped) for as long as you stay alive. Each loop will decrease the time it takes for bombs to spawn. I recommend being aggressive in shooting them down because the drop trajectories aren't as wide as the arcade. 2 buttons needed! This demo is the same build featured by @ZeroPage Homebrew. I wish there was little more length to it, and of course the iconic theme music is sorely missing. The stat/bonus screens will find their way in at some point.. In due time it'll come together, with extras & more flare (space permitting), and I will share builds as they continue to grow. E-J will be up next! Currently I'm working on the cityscape for that section. Thanks to @ZeroPage Homebrew for squeezing this in, to all that took the time to catch this and the other kickass homebrews on the stream, and to those that will give this a shot.   21. I have created a nice little language file for BASIC7800 for Notepad++. If you have never added a language file to Notepad++ use Language>user defined>define your language>import. It's set for .b78 files to pull in the language file. and for you don't know what a language file is it tailors Notepad++ to the specific programming language or dialect highlighting different kinds of commands in different color and generally making the file easier to create and read. The Language file adds color to the commands to make them more readable and sets up so that the 7800 language files auto-starts when a file with the .b78 extension is pulled in. Here is how it looks. Also a little batch file (attached) that simplifies using Notepad++ and compiling and using an emulator. here is the code: C : cd "\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++" start /i notepad++ C : cd "C:\Users\hlo\OneDrive\Projects7800" cmd --------------- Notes: cd "\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++" start /i notepad++ (this part starts notepad++) cd "C:\Users\hlo\OneDrive\Projects7800" cmd (this part sets the location of where your project files are. Alter this line to the YOUR location of your 7800 project files. ) This assumes you have ran INSTALL_WIN.BAT to set the path for 7800basic and set the PATH for whatever emulator you use. Now you can edit the file in NOTEPAD++ then alt+tab to the command window and type 7800BAS yourfile.b78 to compile. to run the compiled program in your emulator (my case PROSYSTEM) in the same command window type PROSYSTEM yourfile.b78.a78. later compiles and runs you just need to do the up arrow in the command window and choose a previous interaction.   22. Recently acquired a UK 7800. The RF video is so bad it gives me headaches. It's not even just a bit of noise on the solid colours it's moving patterns of really prominent noise over different sections of the screen. Any help? Thanks in advance.
  23. Just recently got a 7800, it's my first Atari console, but not my first console that uses just RF. My RF picture quality on other systems (like mega drive) is far far better. This can't be standard right? would love some advice here.

Some of you may have noticed on the AtariAge handbills handed out at PRGE, that on the back cover there's a list of games Coming “Soon.” One of those is Phantasia, so I guess it's time to start a forum thread, even though I don't (yet) have a playable demo. What's Phantasia going to be? Phantasia is a new Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG), heavily inspired by a certain popular series of 27 ARPGs from a certain game hardware & software company, in particular, the SNES entry in that series. In point of fact, my very first “real” game I ever had written was a sort of knock-off of the NES original of that series on the Commodore 64 (my game, I believe, having been lost to time), so this is a particularly exciting project for me. Game Play Features Explore the world of Aclypt to uncover mysteries and quests and, of course, save your village Support for ProLine & compatible, Genesis, and Joy2b+ controllers. One button for using your equipped item, the other for calling up an item-select screen. (Joy2b+ button III = pause.) Your shield operates passively: when you're not using another item, your shield is effective. SNES2Atari: A/B use item, X/Y item-select, Start = pause, Select = same as console Select. Console switches: Pause=Pause, Select=Save (or password?), Reset=Quit/Reset Support for SaveKey (or AtariVox) for saving progress. (Possibly: also a password system? if it's practical) AtariVox voices for dialogue Pick up and use various items of various kinds: equipment items (e.g. weapons), single-use items (e.g. potions), items that are used automatically (e.g. keys), shields, armor, and possibly some other things. Thanks to @Synthpopalooza's spreadsheets for providing the tabular basis for my converter. Uses a 16k RAM addition for decompressing map data (which currently uses a cheap RLE system) I'm not sure how large it will be in the end, but “big.” I've written an allocation system for the larger assets (maps, music, scripts, &c.) to be packed into 16k ROM banks as efficiently as reasonable. Demo builds are being designed to work with the Concerto (as well as, of course, that it should work with emulators and Dragonfly, but Concerto is the lowest-common-denominator at the moment) What's Coming Up? First, I need to fix quite a few things that are badly broken to get a playable demo! Also, we'll definitely want some collaborators, particularly as regards to testing the game as we go along, but of course any input or suggestions are appreciated.
  25. I bought a composite modded 7800 on eBay years and years before I ever touched a soldering iron. I went back to install the UAV kit from brewingacademy.com on it yesterday, following the PDF and the YouTube video in the guide. I deviated a bit from the video as my 7800 already had some destructive changes made when the eBay seller modified it -- they removed the RF port by breaking it off the RF modulator (but left it in for some reason, I completely removed it), and removed R3, R5, and C10. The console before I installed UAV could play sound from Pokey (original Ballblazer cart). Now after installing UAV I'm not getting this sound. I did not have the exact 6.8k resistor to replace R5, but combined two that add up to 6.9k (tested w/ meter) and soldered them to the bottom hole of R5, then lifted R6 and connected them to the positive side of a 10uF capacitor as was done in the YouTube video and PDF guides (see attached image, sorry it's a little blurry). Any idea where I messed up -- do I need to replace R3 and/or C10? Edit to add: Everything else works with the mod. Composite and Svideo, and sound from non-Pokey games.
