  1. Boxed Atari 7800 SOLD! I have some Mint NIB games for the Atari 7800, and a few game lots for the 2600 VCS. Also check out my Atari Game Center decals. I will also be listing some of my homebrew ColecoVision boxes from time to time. Here are my listings! eBay Seller: batty...
  2. Wondering how much a CIB Atari 7800 Red End Label Ballblazer (Rarity 5) would be worth. The box has some damage, but the cart is in mint condition as are the manual and poster. The warranty info is a tiny bit damaged. I will post pics sometime soon. I can't do pics now because I'm in too much pain from my Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. I would appreciate any estimates that can be given without seeing pics, and serious responses only. TIA.
  3. Hello, I'm looking for a French SCART Atari 7800 to hook up to my PVM. Anyone have one they are willing to sell and ship to the US? Thanks for your help. C
  4. Well, I decided to open up my first Atari blog ... the first of many I hope. A bit about me, I am an Atari enthusiast from Knoxville, Tennessee. I started with an Atari 600XL in 1984, progressed to Atari ST and Amiga computers, and eventually even released my own iTunes album of 80's inspired synthpop music, all created using an Atari ST computer. I then caught the emulation bug and got back into retro Atari programming. Well, I found out recently that a guy named PacManPlus is programming a platform game for the 7800 called "Bentley Bear: Crystal Quest" and he needed someone to do POKEY music for his game. I used to mess around with POKEY stuff back in the day, so I thought I'd give it a go. It has been a real adventure so far for me, considering I haven't even messed with chip music in about 25 years. A lot to re-learn. For those who have forgotten, Bentley Bear was the protagonist in the Atari arcade game "Crystal Castles", quite a fun game. I noticed the original arcade game had bits of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite in it, so I decided for this project, I would stick with the classical music theme as well. Currently, I have music for 3 levels done, plus title music and end level music. Unfortunately, I seem to have hit a snag. The problem: I want to use 16-bit POKEY sound for the title music and end level - defeat boss music. For those not in the know, the POKEY chip has 4 sound channels by default, but one of the drawbacks is that you can't get really good bass sounds out of it. One way around this is to combine two channels, which gives you 65,536 frequency settings to choose from (instead of the normal 256), by setting a value in the AUDCTL register. Using this method, you essentially have a 9-octave range for your music now. In practice (and in the emulator) this works awesomely. The title music has a definite Nintendo quality to it. Unfortunately, this is proving hard to work on the actual 7800 hardware, PacManPlus is reporting that the bass track seems not to be playing when it is called. It may be a problem with the emulator, maybe the POKEY is laid out differently on the 7800, there may be a coding issue, but it's been a real mystery. Anyone who has ever programmed sound on the 7800 POKEY, if you've got any suggestions, I'd love to hear them! I'd really love to stick with the 16-bit sound for this music, I think it would really lift the quality of the game. Time to go ... wish me luck.

Simulate a system with color shifts when 'warm' on a CRT TV...A7800_WARM_CRT.zip F. Simulate a system with color shifts when 'warm' on a LCD TV...A7800_WARM_LCD.zip Side Notes: --------------- Three old palette sets renamed and three new ones added. Every group has a core palette plus 6 variations - 7 palettes total for a region within each group. A color chart for each palette was going to be included, but the smallest most practical size (x2 resolution) would have driven the size of each set from ~14KB to well over 500KB. For bandwidth and download considerations they are being left out. However, feel free to download the Color Demo ROM here: (Color Selector Demo (2003) (PD).zip It works fine for both PAL and NTSC, and the color charts will display. Absolutely, there is no definitive or final palette - but 42 different ones are provided here for each region, a total of 84 palettes! Background Details: ---------- ------- If interested in "why" this update, in part it is due to the error I mentioned earlier with starting with a PAL base and trying to create NTSC palettes from it. I ensured the front end (technically accurate 'raw' values) were set to the respective region after figuring out my error, but forgot to fix the back end (conversion to CRT). It resulted in an overall redder palette for FINAL (Which was renamed to the CRTTVR), that is within the reasonable tolerance shift, and of course allowed for yet another CRT palette to be a 'truer' less red/more green palette (CRTTVG). The former less red more green palette, ALT_FINAL is actually the neutral and renamed accordingly (CRTTV). The other two new palettes incorporate work in previous threads in harmony with a request fulfillment (WARM_LCD) as well as my own personal drive to achieve the color shift palette that has been documented and captured (WARM_CRT).
  6. The homebrew community enjoys robust support, with new PCBs being produced for new games and repros. But eventually, the hardware will fail and disappear. Is there a cost-effective way to produce new, but technologically authentic pre-crash consoles?
  7. The annual-ish "Atari Party" returns to Davis, California on Saturday, July 6th, 2013. Local Atari enthusiasts will be exhibiting their systems, spanning from Atari 2600 to Jaguar, as well as Atari games on other platforms (Nintendo, PlayStation, etc.) There will also be a free prize drawing; among the prizes: Legacy "USB Classic" joystick, books by O'Reilly, and retro-themed original wall art. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. 12pm-5pm at the Yolo County Public Library, Davis Branch (315 East 14th St, Davis, CA 95616)
  8. Really want this game. I don't care if its CIB I actually want to play the game. Finally was able to find a reasonable auction with it, big thanks to Roadrunner!

  11. Many of you know that I'm partial to posting in the ColecoVision Forum, but that takes away nothing from my love and adoration of the Atari 7800 SuperSystem! I love my 7800, and I have a decent selection of NIB and loose carts, and a number of excellent homebrews from PacMan Plus. I also have a terrific set of the European Atari 7800 D-pad controllers, which I think are far superior to their U.S. counterparts. I also have an original 1984 unit (not EP), and it is registered in the official 7800 serial number thread. So... I got married this last weekend! And what did my awesome wife surprise me with during our rehearsal dinner??? Check it out: I was absolutely flabbergasted!!
  12. UPDATE. bought these atari systems and the flea market today. told they have been in storage for a very very very long time but look like they were never used. im pretty sure all the cables are with them but would have to double check. Atari 7800 800XL 1050 wireless atari controllers taking best offers on these. they are untested but look amazing. pm me with any questions.
  13. Hi! I finally got my 7800 working with my 42 inch Visio TV following the method suggested by a post on AtariAge using an old VCR. I am so excited it worked! My next question is, when I hook it up the games are black and white which I recognize as an issue due to the signal conversion but is there any way that I can correct this? Modifying the system internally is not something I can or want to do. Any help would be very much appreciated!

  15. I described my mental invention to bot Atari and Sega. Both of them said if I can build it, and I'm giving them a percentage of sales, they will allow authorized Atari and Sega systems respectively using this technology. But they will not fund the $17,000 research needed to build a prototype. Intellivision Prductions said ater Dr. King day 2013, Keith, the head of Intellivision will discuss using Intellivision's classic gaming reputation to head a kickstarter project to raise the money to fund the building of the prototype. The basic idea is running an old ROM not intended to run online, and make them run online without programming individual online code for individual games. This can work with ANY 2600 game, not just Atari Games, but third party games too. And because this is not individually done at the game, it might respark inerest in third party games. The only requirement is that each parson has a separate joystick (which may cause a problem for the 2600 paddle games, but I can fix that) and can play multi-player local (sorry Alien Front Online and Outtrigger beyond 4 players or without splitscreen, at least for this solution) on one screen (sorry PS1 system link games) I can offer one "premium" for the backers in Kickstarter fundraiser project, a vote on what system other than the Intellivision will be made first. The only ones I can guarantee are Atari and Sega systems. Nintendo said though they can't guarantee the approval of the concept, they won't review it until a prototype comes in. I don't know what Sony and Microsot think, and there are a few other system making independents like Bally(Astrocade) , Coleco (Colecovision), Magnavox(Odyssey 2 and CD-i), SNK (Neo Geo), Konami (the modern owners of the TG16) 3DO, Emerson (Arcadia 2001), Vectrex, RCA (Studio II), and Fairchild (Channel F). Nothing will get 50%+1 vote at first ballot. All Atari owner will probably pool their votes for the 2600, Sega would be a tougher one to call because Europe would be for the Master System, the US would be for Genesis, (possibly Dreamcast), and Japan would be for the Saturn. If Nintendo sent a different message, the NES wold be up there but how many people would vote or a system that might not be. I cannot specifics discuss with the general public watt he secret is to getting this work because this cold be patentable. But if someone/pool of people made my paypal account $17,000 richer, I can afford to get the prototype made. The company who can make it is Davison, an idea realization company. They quoted me a price of $17000 at the most after discussing specifics, and all they want is 10%+research money. They said if it runs over, they'll fund the rest. If those people at Atari and/or Sega are wiling to either use their name for a kickstarter project, or even fund it themselves, let them speak. Otherwise, hopefully by Dr. King Day 2013, Intellivision will put their name on a Kickstarter project and I'll link it here. Otherwise, I just wan to see the pre-Kickstarter-announcement buzz on this concept. So, any game from the 2600 to Jaguar and from the SG-1000 to Dreamcast being turned online... what do you think of the concept?
  16. So I picked up a nice Atari cartridge lot off Craigslist the other day: 45 loose cartridges for $25, 22 of them 7800. Among the 7800 carts included was a new one to me: Tower Toppler. I loved this game on my C64 back in the day, so I was excited to have it on another platform for which I've recently started collecting. Get it home, clean the contacts, insert it into my 7800, and the title screen comes up with that familiar little ditty playing. So I excitedly press the button on my Proline controller to start playing and the first level comes up. Submarine appears, drops off my little guy, and then.... cuts to the next level screen? Huh. That was weird. So the next level comes up, little guy hops out of the sub... and another cutaway to the next level screen. WTH? Turn off the 7800, clean the cartridge's contacts especially meticulously this time, clean the contacts in the 7800 cart slot, and try again. And got the same result. Am I missing something obvious here? Or is there some extra hardware in the TT cart that may be fouled up and causing the game to malfunction? If it's helpful, I can record and post a video of the behavior. But I'm hopeful that this is just some simple-yet-obscure issue that one of you longtime AA regulars will know off the top of your head. Thanks in advance for any help! - m@

  20. I don't know how much this topic has been debated, but was the outdated hardware also part of the reason of failure? I mean, the Atari 7800 had only 48KB of memory while a lot of other machines of the day had over 100. The processor, 6502, was pretty outdated at the time--it ran at 1.19GHz or 1.79GHz when clocked, while even the cheapest of ran a safe 3MHz. From a technical standpoint, the Atari 7800 was badly outdated. Those specs on an Atari 2600 or 5200 would have been fine, but by time it came to 1986 the market doodling with the over 10MHz range. Now, you may say that my theory leaves out two things: price & the crash. Well, yes, those are two good points, but the ZX81 -- the cheapest computer of the 80s (priced at $100) had 64KB of space and ran at 3.25MHz. At the price of $140, the Atari 7800, and considering the success of the 2600 and 5200, it made me think: why didn't Atari just come up with it's OWN processor? Atari was a huge company, why not create their own? Although the Atari 7800 didn't fail with sales, heck it had 1.77 million of them, but I see a reason why developers weren't enthusiastic about developing games: for it's day, it was outdated. Their games had to be pretty limited to fit the RQ of the Atari 7800. Alright, thanks for reading, this was just sorta a question I had for the community: Was the outdated hardware another reason for failure in the Atari 7800? (Yes or No) Please note I am in no way trying to bash the 7800, it was a good system.
  21. I've scoured the web and the AA archives and I can't seem to find any schematics for the 7800 Maria. I'm referring to logic diagrams for the chip itself, not the 7800 motherboard. These do seem to exist for TIA but I can't find any for the Maria. Does anyone know if they even exist? Surely GCC must have had to conceptualize the internal logic of the chip at some point during development, right? The reason I ask is because I'm working on a hardware project for the 7800 and I've hit a point where I fear the only way to proceed forward will likely be to attempt to replace the Maria chip with an equivalent. This has already been done with TIA but I have yet to see this done with Maria. If anyone has any information at all, it would be greatly appreciated.
  22. Well guys, I think I am going to wrap things up here. I've got some back problems and will be out of work for the next week as a result, and I want to minimize trips to the post office. I don't think anything left is going to sell anyway. So, thanks to everyone that helped out! It's been a crazy-busy week for shipping stuff out.
  23. Ebay auction going now. 4 days left, bidding is already up to $51.00. If this is a game you are looking for then please place your bid. Also have a sealed copy in NM condition. I am going to leave that up to offers at the moment. Below is the Ebay auction. Happy Bidding!! eBay Auction -- Item Number: 150880460523
