  1. Seeing as how: Rikki & Vikki was coming out next week I didn't have any good 2 button 7800 controllers I recently picked up a new Hyperkin GN6 controller from my local Fry's for $5.74 I had been checking the Atariage store for almost a year now to see if the Seagull 78 was back in stock A search of the forums 2 days ago lead me to this post by Inky back in 2002: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/14872-genesis-to-7800-controller-mod/ The above mod uses extremely common and easy to find components that I already had on hand... I decided to mod my new Hyperkin GN6 for use on my 7800. After doing this mod and using the controller on the 7800 I think it rocks. I love it. This is now my favorite controller for the 7800. Disclaimer: Any person undertaking any activity mentioned or alluded to, described below, bears all responsibility for anything that happens to themselves, others, or to any property as a consequence of their actions. Regardless of the contents and wording of this post or resulting thread, I make no claims, assurances, recommendations, or anything else. This is just a detailed description of what I did. Nothing more. The mod: This mod is completely internal so there is no adapter to connect. My total project cost was less than $7 and that includes the $5.74 controller and sales tax. Well that and 2 hours of my time. I will be modding a second controller so hopefully that will take a lot less time now that I've already figured out all the build steps detailed below. I printed out the schematic from Inky's post: First I had to map out the DB9 pin connections to the wires soldered into the PCB with my multimeter. Note the PCB number markings *DO NOT* correspond the the DB9 (joystick plug) pins! (The 1 marking on the PCB *DOES NOT* indicate pin 1 of the DB9 connector.) I marked the above schematic with the corresponding PCB numbering to make it easier for me to perform the mod. I recommend that if you do the mod you verify that the connectivity in my Hyperkin GN6 controller is the same as yours. You do not want to be re-opening the controller later to try and debug/fix any wrong connections. The inside of the controller looks like this: I built the circuit from the schematic that Inky posted on a piece I trimmed out of a PCB prototyping board. Be *VERY* careful of the method you chose to trim down the board as you could produce lots of fine dust that is likely very harmful if inhaled. If you can't do it safely, don't do it at all. Here is what the board looked like after it was trimmed: I soldered the components to my prototyping board and used some solid core copper wire from a multi-conductor cable I had lying around to make the jumper connections (black wires). I also soldered 3 wires (white, blue, and black) to the board for later connection to the Hyperkin PCB. I recommend using solid-core copper wire because the stiffness makes it easier to work with and also holds the completed circuit in place inside the controller so that it doesn't rattle around. (I don't use tape or anything else to secure the mod circuit inside the controller.) The resultant mod board: I removed 4 of the joystick cable connections (wires) from the Hyperkin PCB and connected them to the appropriate spots on my prototyping board. Be sure to use solder to bridge the contact points labeled "8" and "9" on the Hyperkin PCB. This bridging is on the reverse (solder) side of the PCB and is not shown in the picture below: Next I wrapped the mod board with at least 3 turns of electrical tape to prevent anything from shorting to the Hyperkin PCB once the mod circuit is completed. Solder the three wires (white, blue, and black) from the mod board to the Hyperkin PCB points as notated in the schematic in the first picture of this post (assuming your board maps out to the same DB9 pins that mine does). You are left with something looking like this (I hadn't yet connected the black wire when I took the picture below): Now fold the mod board over the front side of the Hyperkin PCB and fit the Hyperkin PCB back into the front half of the controller shell. It should look something like this: Close it up and screw it tight. You're done! The controller will look just like it did before you started:
  2. Who has modded their 7800 and what mods did you use? Everyone knows the limits of the stock video output of the 7800 and how it leaves much to be desired. What mods have you gone with and why did you choose to mod your system.
  3. So the writing is on the wall the original hardware may still work but many will not be able to hook it up. TVs are dropping the antenna rf port and analog av ports meaning if you don't have an HDMI or compatible signal you won't be able to hook it up to a modern TV. While there are clone systems that mimic the system there is nothing that gives real accurate low latency authentic hardware representations. So what can be done when no one is making these chips and they were never meant to be used with digital outputs. The answer is FPGA a chip that can literally change it's internal connections to mimic actual hardware and clone actual chips so you have a low latency authentic system that acts almost identically to real hardware but can be reconfigured to run on modern TVs. There is an open source project to resurrect and preserve gaming platforms in FPGA form that can be used by the community to create hardware projects commercial or personal. The name of the project is the MiSTer FPGA and they have working Atari 2600, 5200, Nintendo NES, Sega Genesis, Arcade Boards and other platforms. There are no 7800 cores but more than half the work is already done given the processor and 2600 chips are already there. Without someone's help the 7800 may fade to even more obscurity and will not be playable. Here are some links for further information: A news article detailing the project The 2600 core The hardware And Hardware Addons Wiki So what are your thoughts and what do you think the future or fate of the 7800 is?
  4. EDIT I switched the difficulty switch and it is now working So I recently got a 7800 (with expansion port) up and running so I decided to test a couple of games. To my surprise the cult classic Koolaid Man has an incompatibility, where it freezes before the intro animation of the Koolaid man doing his signature breaking through the wall. I cleaned everything and tried again to no avail. I popped it into my 4 switch woody and it popped up with the Koolaid man busting through the wall. That brings me to the question; what other 2600 games are known to not work with the 7800?
  5. TL;DR: Speedrunner looking for potential techniques Hi all, I'm currently maintaining two projects (in a different community) about potential techniques on different platforms that could be considered for speedrunning purposes. I'm looking for two primary things regarding 7800: - answers to my 3 technical questions, - any experiences of oddities on a real hardware. 1 - Subframe input - Is it possible for a game to poll multiple inputs within a single frame (swcha and swch i/o ports)? 2 - Cart swapping - I only found this on AtariAge forums, anyone knows more details of point me to the relevant threads? - Would like to know is it possible to swap carts while the console runs without getting a crash, continuing the gameplay? 3 - Dig Dug reset glitch - If you press reset 36 times, does the game crashes and will only show garbled lines? In BizHawk, pressing reset 36 times will result in a visual glitch which seems to be an unrecoverable soft lock. The resulting soft lock visually identical to another glitch in Choplifter which can result in resetting the game as well. More about Choplifter glitch: If you are interested in the current state of my projects, here are the links: http://tasvideos.org/PlatformResources/Lynx.html http://tasvideos.org/MESHUGGAH/ForbiddenTechniques.html Thanks in advance
  6. Hi, I'm having issues with implementing arrays in 7800Basic, the online manual appears to have an example that makes no sense to me, it doesn't show how to declare an Array? I assume to declare its like my example below? dim enemyX[0] = var1 dim enemyX[1] = var2 dim enemyX[2] = var3 this means I can loop through them like this? for temp1 = 0 to 2 if enemyX[temp1] >160 then enemyX[temp1] = 0 next Also...getting the _length of data appears to be unclear to me, I get an error about it been before the data statement or something...
  7. So I'm selling off a bunch of duplicate games that I've acquired over the years. I'm running out of space and I need to clear that space out. Games are separated by system: Intellivision Lot (31 Games) - $100+US Shipping Boxed Games Include: Space Hawk, Star Strike (2 copies), Astro Smash (No overlays), Snafu (No overlays), PGA Golf, Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack, Tennis, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Horse Racing, Auto Racing, Space Battle, and Space Armada Loose Games Include: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Tron Deadly Discs, Swords & Serpents, Demon Attack, Beauty & the Beast, Masters of the Universe, Triple Action, Lock n Chase, Atlantis, Night Stalker, Burgertime, Frogger (2 copies), Donkey Kong, Venture, Dragon Fire, Frogger, Pitfall!, and Centipede Images of said games: https://imgur.com/a/kmLNNUw I would prefer to sell these games per lot but I'm willing to separate them if need be (as long as it's a decent offer). Please PM or reply to the topic if there are any questions. Thanks.
  8. A question on timing of sprite movement in 7800Basic, I traditionally use decimal for controlling speed. 7800Basic supports this, but is it better to use a frame counter to trigger a move? Recommendations welcome! Thanks. Speed = 0.2 X = X + Speed
  9. Willing to pay a premium for 7800 games with a dust sleeve. Ms. Pac Man, Robotron, Joust, Dig Dug, Food Fight, Asteroids, Pole Position 2, Centipede, Galaga, and Xevious. See pic for dust sleeve, the cart on bottom, not on top. For my personal collection.
  10. Is there such a thing? There is a game whose sprites I'd like to have a go at editing, but unfortunately I don't know where to begin. Thanks.
  11. I'm looking to buy an Atari 7800 Prosystem, I only ask that it be NTSC and include the AC adapter. Thanks a ton!
  12. I keep checking the store for Froggie, and it never shows up for sale. I saw photos of the cartridge, manual, and box in another thread awhile back and have been eagerly awaiting its arrival since. Does it have something to do with a shortage of available pokeys? If so, I have one to spare (although I was saving it for tep392's Dig Dug PK/XM should it ever see fruition). Thanks.

  14. Has anyone created a sound effect library for use in our 7800 Basic projects?
  15. I'm going to begin making a power supplies that works on both the 7800 and 2600 especially for those having a hard time finding replacement 7800 power supplies. These power supplies wont cause interference and they will be able to plug directly into the stock 2600 and 7800 power jacks. Be $30
  16. Hello All. Finally got myself a Harmony Cartridge {Probably 10 years after everybody else it seems}. AND, it seems I'm living {or am going to live} the nightmare I've feared with these {multi}carts in the past {fortunately, I've had no major problems with any of the other multicarts/flashcarts I've obtained up til now}. First, I've only got an AV modded 7800 {2 actually} to test it on. When I first received it, I was able to briefly {1-2 seconds at most} on occasion get what appeared to be a garbled menu screen on one of my consoles. Other than that, it has been as if no cartridge is inserted in the console {i.e. single or multiple solid lines or blank screen, etc.}. I've since compounded the problems, and believe I have now deleted some of the main files/directories {i.e. program files that had the loader etc..-My SD card only has the following folders now: Drivers; Homebrew; Manual}. So, my 1st question is, can anybody guide me on how to rebuilding the directories that I've deleted? But, from there: Am I perhaps just out of luck with this thing? I've definitely cleaned the contacts as well as they can be cleaned. Is there any chance the problem is with the Cart itself? I've been attempting to contact the seller {I think Batari}, but have not been able to do so before extending the problems with this. If it's potentially the consoles causing the problems, then I do not wish to start fumbling with them-so that might be a dead-end for me because I do not want to buy a spare 2600 if I don't know pretty much 100% that the problem isn't with the hardware/cart? This concern is particularly real because I think I did the re-install of the Firmware properly before deleting everything tonight {only thing I struggled with was: What's the root directory? I chose E: for that choice}.? But, would that briefly appearing garbled menu indicate the hardware/cart itself is fine? or might it indicate the problem could be with the hardware/cart itself? {A note here: After attempting to reinstall the firmware, I no longer was able to get that garbled menu anymore}. Lots of questions. So, sorry this inquiry is all over the place. {I went back and put bolds where the main inquiries are for this topic}. I hate to think I've got an unusable "BRICK" on my hands, which, of course, was by no means cheap, but I also don't want to piss anyone off if I were to pursue recourse in that regards {Some day I'd like to be ahead of the curve with all of the great products out here to be had - such as, perhaps, a 7800 multicart?}-{Note here too-I'm currently licking my wounds after "discovering" the latest SGM for C-vision, only to realize I just missed the pre-order deadline-so I surely am a hard luck story here}. I'd hate to accept that my knowledge of the 2600 might remain limited to Seaquest, Phoenix and the several other titles I have, but am afraid the current can of worms I see open before me is not going to resolve itself anytime soon, and, if it can't be resolved soon, then I may have to bury it in my backyard or crawlspace until I forget it and stop trying to resolve it. I hope someone can make sense of the mess here that lies above, and help me on my way to resolution? {or make me an offer to get it off my hands? lol - I hope?} Thanks.
  17. Hi Peeps, having issues with getting tiling to work, the below results in a black screen...what have i missed? The Map has tiles set to emended and is XML, 8x16, and 20 x 12 in size. 18. Apart from the ROM code is there any other difference between a NTSC and PAL 7800 cartridge? I can use NTSC donors for my PAL projects?
  19. Hey guys, I decided to try this forum as it might garner some more attention than in the Marketplace section. I'm near to completion with my PAL release Atari 7800 collection and there are three games that I've been having real difficulty in getting... - Kung Fu Master - F-18 Hornet - Tomcat: F-14 Simulator All three of these games were released in PAL territories under the HES/Salu branding and I'm looking for boxed versions of these games! I'm also on the hunt for a boxed PAL copy of Dark Chambers. Is anyone willing to sell any of these? I don't care too much about the condition! Thanks!

  23. Hello again, I was here for a little while, got a couple of amazing systems thanks to some wonderful members here, and then disappeared into life (sinus insanity for 10 months now). But I'm back (not that you noticed me missing) and still haven't gotten some of the systems I'm after. I have had awful sinuses for the past year and haven't been able to go find them 'in the wild', and have had great luck here, so thought I'd try again. I'm looking for an Atari 5200 and 7800, Jaguar, Intellivision and, believe it or not, a CD-I. I have fond memories of the CD-I because of when and how I got it, it'd be a shelf sitter that gave me a gooey feeling inside. I'd prefer to deal with folks I can talk to on here than ebay, as I said last time. I'm not necessarily trying to find mint stuff, just in good shape and functional. If I want to pay too much, I've no doubt that I can go to a game store or ebay for that, please try to be fair (and I understand fair goes both ways). I'm open to other neat systems too if you happen to be looking to unload any. Thanks!
  24. I have a 7800 that has the cartridge guide tabs broken off so the dust covers don't open on 2600 games. Years ago, I inserted some paper clip wires into the plastic while the metal was hot. I'd like to fix this machine decently. Anyone know of a good source for these?
  25. Hi Guys - my father has rheumatoid arthritis and loves to play video games. However his hands are very disfigured and it does not allow him to hold a older-style console joystick comfortably. Especially the one for the Atari 7800, that one even hurts my hands. So I searched around and could not really find any alternative NES-style / SMS-style control pads easily (except for these NES / SNES controller DB9 adapters available in Europe for about $45 each). Some I found don't work with 2 button on the 7800. He loves the the Atari 7800 old school games (he played these with me as a kid) - I searched all over, and found a way to convert one - and I was successful in taking an OEM NES controller and making it work with the Atari 7800 (2 button games) and 2600 (1 button games). It actually makes the 7800 2 button games more enjoyable such as Choplifter. Playing Megamania is more fun too. So now I am building these to order and have made a few available for purchase on eBay if you are interested. Not looking to get rich quick off of this, I just have some parts inventory from my retro-collection and want to start making some room on my shelves. You can see them here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/263557597264 Thanks for looking!
