In short a PC Tech friend has been working on my Atari 800XL. He managed to get it working, he also discovered the keyboard has an issue. Thankfully I found that replacement Mylar tracing on 8 Bit Classics. But I need some help from the Atari Computer fans here. My friend wants to replace the caps to be on the safe side. I was able to find cap kits on console5, but nothing for the 800XL directly. They do have one for the 600XL and 800 which one of those 2 would be the best option?

Hello everyone. I'm writing this from Japan. The 800XL I bought from the US on ebay was delivered today. I did a self-check and everything was fine, but then I went to the bathroom and when I came back, the screen was completely black. When I turned the power back on, this screen appeared. https://twitter.com/kurosawa6502/status/1442422599942688775 I don't have any repair skills, so I cleaned the base with IPA. Of course, the situation did not change. I don't have the skills to repair it, so I would like to hire a professional to do the repair, and I would like to know if you have any recommendations. It's depressing to send something back to the US that arrived today from the US. Kurosawa

Hello, looking for a good quality, double-sided photo of the atari 64k memory card (atari 64kmr) for the 1090 xl expansion system. It would help me for to be able to redo this board. or better someone here maybe has the "gerber" file to recreate the PCB ? I have an atari 1090xl expansion system, but I have no cards to put in it ? Thanks!!

I performed the 800XL S-Video mod (described here at post #8) remove C56, lift C54, connect R67/68 to chroma pin. I verified everything and checked continuity, but I'm getting a weird result: On my TCL TV, the RF output is still in color but looks worse, and the AV input is snowy, high contrast B&W and rapidly scrolls. On a portable LCD screen, the S-Video is clear but B&W. (My Apple IIe also displays in B&W on this screen.) I know that some TVs just can't display video from older devices, but because the RF is still in color, I think I must have done something wrong. Can anyone suggest what to do next? If it matters, I'm powering the computer from a USB charger (5.3V 2A) In a YouTube video (here) they also remove C55, should I be doing this? Thanks for any help!

Hi Everyone. Are there shrink-wrapped new hardware solutions on the market that do the job of a 600/800XL? And a 1050 disk drive? I have heaps of cartridges & 5.25" games which I can't use now as my 600XL & 1050 are both dead. I am not a hardware literate so I can't do maintenance on these. I was vaguely interested in the Brewing Academy's 1088XEL/XLD options, but they offer a heap of hardware options which I can't navigate. I also can't find in Australia any second-hand 600/800XLs for sale. Any help would be appreciated. cheers, Jonathan

So I'm a new owner of a previously owned 800 XL. Along with it came several issues of Antic(unfortunately without their disks). One issue was Volume 3, Number 4 from August 1984. The Game of the Month, Creepy Caverns, was printed in 2 parts for "the benefit of readers who have only 16K of RAM.", according to the instructions under "How to use the program with (minimum 32K) DOS systems". But the 800XL I have has 64K. So how do I type this in if I don't have this limitation? I had first thought to just type them both in one after the other, but as I was looking at both listings I noticed they have some duplicate line numbers. I'm guessing though that if I just typed them both in, then there might be problems since there can be only one of a single line number. Typing one and then typing the other would overwrite the one before it. This is a huge shot in the dark, asking this question here. I don't exactly expect anyone to have an answer for me, but with me being a new user, any help I can get is appreciated.

Not sure if this is a known variant (I assume it must be), but the yellow silkscreen is not something I've seen before (in ten years of fixing and upgrading dozens of 800XLs). NOS boxed NTSC machine.

I am looking for good games I can download and use on my 800XL. I am not an arcade person. For the Commodore, there were games like The Bards Tale, Wizardry, and the SSI Gold Box games. I know about Alternate Reality and Phantasie, but not how to get them. I dont have a physical drive to use disks, even if I could find any that still work. All I have, for now, is an SIO2PC-USB. The 800XL is stock, just 64k.

Hi All, I’ve recently worked on an Atari 400 and 800xl and installed the new Sophia 2 chips with dvi connections. Both are outputting great video now. My 400 had some issues at first running cartridges but after a few tries and cleaning some carts off it worked. My 800xl is another story though. I can’t get a single cartridge to start. Ones that I already tested as working on the 400 do not work on the 800xl. I ran the self test and all items pass. Wondering how to test the cartridge slot itself. I did use some canned air to blow out the port as well as a little 99.8 isopropyl. Anyone have any thoughts to verify if the cartridge slot is working? Are there any continuity points I can check from the cartridge pins? Any suggestions appreciated. GabeShack

I pulled out of storage some Atari data disks formatted with DOS 2.5. The first few times I accessed the disks on my 800XL/1050 combo I was able to perform a directory listing and open any data files (print to screen). For some reason I now cannot access anything on these disks. No file list, nothing. I sometimes get an Error 138 when trying to read the directory on one of these disks with MyDos. I can access many other disks with no problem. I tried using Copymate to preform a sector copy, but it found no data. Any ideas what's going on here or what else I can try?

I bought an 800XL from ebay which was advertised as having a Sophia Rev C installed and a SIDE 2 cartridge. It turned out to also have an Ultimate 1MB board installed. Anyway, as a newbie to the Atari 8 bit world, I am struggling to work out how to get the SIDE 2 cartridge to behave. The Sophia board works like a charm, and the Ultimate 1MB appears to function, at least to some extent. It has SpartadosX 4.46 and Ultimate BIOS 1.02 from 2016 by FJC. I am stumbling over which settings I need to have on the U1MB and SIDE2 so I can FDISK a CF card. The system came with a Sandisk 8GB card that had been wiped, and as yet I am unable to run FDISK on it. When I try FDISK all I get is a "138 Device does not respond" . In case the card is the issue, I have another 8GB Sandisk on order, but it hasn't arrived yet. If I boot with the card in and switch down, then the LED on the SIDE 2 does not illuminate and the display is just a cursor square on the top left corner. If I boot without the card inserted. the LED illuminates and the bootup screen comes on, which suggests the CF card is at least part of the issue. What settings to I need set on U1MB and what else do I need to do to get this to work other than a new CF card? Current settings: Extended RAM: 1088KB RAMBO System: Stock XL BASIC Slot: BASIC XEGS slot : Grayed out and Disabled SpartaDOS X : Enabled Graphical OS : Grayed Out and Disabled Boot to loader : Disabled VBXE, Soundboard, Stereo Pokey : grayed out and disabled COVOX : Disabled PBI BIOS : Enabled PBI Device ID : 0 Hard Disk : Enabled ATR swap button : Enabled Boot Partition : D1 HDD Write Lock : Disabled Drive 1 swap : Disabled High-speed SIO : Disabled

Hi all, I recently bought an 800XL with some issues. When the system is powered on, it immediately boots to the Memory Test. Both ROMs fail the test, and the RAM test only completes two or three blocks before it fails with the screen attached. The keyboard is unresponsive and I need to power cycle the machine to reboot. I'm new to Atari 8-bits but I am confused how the ROMs fail the test yet the machine boots to the Memory Test screen. I would assume based on my limited reading reseating the socketed chips (very few on this particular machine), testing voltages, and ordering up new RAM and RAM sockets would be where to start on getting this thing running again. Am I missing anything else?

If someone successfully installed the Rev. D UAV in an 800XL and then were Stupid enough to accidently insert the board into the chip socket while their 800XL was powered on, what damage if any would you expect from that stupidity? I had a good, working install of the UAV as best I could tell...though I was investigating some slight ghosting in the display. I was trying to confirm if I had the Luma and the composite video reversed (I had only done basic boot-up display to the Ready prompt and the initial U1M boot screen, no games or fancy displays). That's when I managed to forget I was powered on and inserted the UAV into the chip socket. Now, I can only get black-and-white output or a over-driven signal that has color halos on the white lettering/borders (if that makes any sense). I added the U1M mod to this machine after installing the UAV--- and for clarity, both were working prior to my oops. I've already ordered a couple additional UAV's, but they haven't arrived yet to allow me to do any cross-testing with this or a 2nd un-modded machine I have. I'm just driving myself nuts guessing at this point.

Is there interest in the community for a little board, built entirely with general-purpose, currently-manufactured parts, which replaces the 'Sally' custom CPU in the 8-bit systems? Here is a video of the reverse-engineering and design process: https://youtu.be/iTJLFSFqFeE

Hi folks, I recently took my old 800xl (stock, no mods) out of storage and after powering it on and getting to the READY screen the screen becomes completely scrambled about 3-5 seconds later. It’s not a static scrambled screen either, the garbage displayed on the screen changes at random time intervals. I tried all the obvious fixes (took out every removable I.C. and reseated them, double checked all ICs were firmly set in their sockets, replaced RAM, ANTIC and CPU). I also threw out the old power supply and made a new one but the problem persists. Note that about 25% of the time when I turn on the machine I just get a black screen. Power Supply ======== I had the old ingot style power supply that I’m pretty sure must have fried something when I initially powered up my 800xl. It was reading ~ +6.5 to 7 VDC! The first thing I did after reading about those ingot PSs was to throw it away and build a new PS using an old USB cord. The power from that new PS reads +5.50VDC. I verified that the new RAM chips are getting power within tolerance: measured +5.3VDC , tolerance is between +4.5 and 5.5 VDC. RAM === Next, I bought two different sets of RAM chips off eBay but none of them fix the issue: * Motorola 4164 (MCM6665BP20) 64K DRAM * Oki M3764-15RS 64K DRAM note that I am not mixing the RAM chips (E.g. I am not using some of the Oki’s and some of the Motorola’s together). Replacing the ANTIC and CPU ================== After replacing the RAM and seeing that it did not improve things, I read all of the Atari 800xl tech manuals I could find (great stuff btw, really wish I had access to that back in he 80s!). After understanding exactly what the different ICs do, I came up with a hypothesis: if the machine was operating normally, then on the READY prompt screen the video out signals on the ANTIC and GTIA chips would have a consistent pattern of pulses because that screen is static (it only displays READY). The converse should also be true: when the screen on my 800xl becomes randomly scrambled, then the video out signals from the chips would vary with the randomly changing scrambled output I was seeing. So I should be able to work backwards from the composite out port -> display circuitry -> GTIA chip -> ANTIC chip using a logic probe and find the source of the scrambled display. Sure enough, I could see that the signals on pins 2,3 & 5 of the ANTIC chip (pixel data & H/V sync command output to GTIA) were indeed varying with the randomly changing scrambled output I was seeing on the monitor. So I ordered an ANTIC chip (C021697-11) and a CPU just for good measure (C014806C-29). I put those chips in, turned on the machine and..... the problem still exists. Unless I somehow received two bad batches of RAM, the schematics show that it could be a bad MMU chip or the two multiplexer ICs (u26 & u27; 74LS158’s). But before I go buying more chips, I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this issue or if anyone has advice on next steps to troubleshoot. Thanks, Jeff

So, as I've mentioned before, I've recently come back to Atari 8 bit computing after decades away. Currently I don't actually have any of my old hardware, other than 520ST. I am in the progress of procuring some old hardware in the form of an 800XL and supporting hardware(possible disk drives/SIO solution/display/etc). One of the goals I have set for myself is to *finally* do some programming for the old 800XL. I did BASIC back in the day on my old 400/800XL, when I was a kid. Then didn't really touch computing from 90-96 or so while I was in the US Navy. After leaving the navy I went to school and became a software engineer, which I still am today. But I never have done any assembly programming. Until I have actual hardware to develop on, I plan on using one of the emulators I've used over the years(most likely Altirra) to write/test my code. I'm also considering using a windows editor/compiler for the actual development work, whether I have actual hardware or not. Does anyone have any thoughts on how they would proceed if they were me? More later...

Hi chaps and chappesses! Finally got my hands on an atari 800xl.. Been after one for a while... I have a few questions about potential mods and repairs As i bought it potentially not working is there anything i need to look out for? What are common issues? Do the usb power connectors actually work? Ive seen there are ram upgrades.. Even up to 256mb.. Is there a guide how to do the upgrades? Is there a list of mods anywhere for other fun stuff? Is there a way for rgb output? (Just cause the rest of my set up is rgb) Is it posible to make your own cartridges? And is there a way to convert tape only stuff to cartridge? I'm sure theres more questions i have but i'll wait till i get it running to ask

IMG_1069.MOV I pulled out my old 800xl. It seems to work but there is interference in the RF output. It’s pops and clicks with lines like an old VHS tracking disorder. The monitor output has never worked on this machine. The hole in the case isn’t even large enough to fit the monitor to RCA cable. I have tried many different RF cables, switch boxes, and adapters and different monitors and TVs. What do you guys think? Would it be the power supply or the graphics chip? Should I open her up and reseat chips or something? Or does it seemed trashed? I’m trying to upload a video but it doesn’t seem to work IMG_1069.MOV
