Hi guys. I'm working on a remake of Let's Compare ( Donkey Kong ). The original video is out of date & I need to upgrade it. I'm looking for either the ROMS or good clean video footage of all 4 levels from the updated Intellivision version & The arcade version for the colecovision. The new video will be hi def & 60 fps. Any help would be greatly appreciated & I'll include any help in the credits. Thanks guys. Gaming History Source

This is more of a read instead of an advertisement for what's to come. First to admit, this will be my second and latest game. The first being Pong. The other games such as Warlords and Haunted House are not forgotten. Due to the hours I put into Dino Eggs and this current game I can say I am professionally experienced with Z80 programming, more likely extremely above average. Because I have become so good and close to the code, I have been able to do things that if Coleco programmers took the time they could have made Activision style games or better. Even with the 1k memory limitation, which is actually less if you use BIOS routines. I have proven this with my partially ported release of DIABLO from the ADAM which I may have to revisit being it has yet to be released by anyone else. To be fair, they did not have the tools we have today. Graphic and sound design was done by hand on paper. Even compiling took hours or days when in my case is mere nanoseconds and can be tested in emulation or on physical equipment in real time. So now we come down to the title of the article. The 80s of which I am stuck mentally, being the best and worst years of my life, memory was expensive. I never bought the 64k expansion for my ADAM because it was, I believe, $104 at the time. A couple of years earlier, no doubt even worse. So, Coleco used the cheapest ram and ROM as necessary to run a business. Same as getting games out the door ASAP. Completely understandable. Today, all I can get for a reasonable price is 32k as well all my cartridge PCBs are geared towards using 32k OTP or EPROM's, so I am basically stuck using 32k and why not. This comes back to my programming style as I want the tightest possible code, that is how I program, but this brings me to around 20k for Them's Be Fighti'n Cars. By having leftover space I can unravel loops, forget about compression or even having separate code for 1 and 2 players instead of them sharing. All of that increases the speed of how code is run. My favorite trick is misusing the stack because the stack is faster by design. So, why the article other than venting or a mind break from looking at code. No real reason other than sharing some thoughts. It is my hope that budding programmers will use the resources available to them instead of just grabbing an MSX or other sister machine ROM and reworking it to run on the Colecovision. 32k with 1k of memory is actually a lot. Maybe you are not going to make a Rembrandt, but you have a lot of resources, which 99% of it is figuring out the math. With the tools at hand I am on the cusp of releasing TBFC which I started on February 5th of this year. Around 10,000 lines of code and under 24k. Don't let the short time and small size fool you. It was a bear to figure out. Long 16-hour days, fatigue, eye strain and lots of 5 hour energy. It also gave me experience to tackle other projects. Now I can not only finish Warlords and Haunted House but also Shamus 2084 which are all three requested games I also have more coming down the pike, including hardware projects that will hopefully blow some minds. Things which you already know by now. At present, my limitations on bringing you new entertainment is coming from the lack of parts thanks to our current political climate so, you get what you voted for. Until then, TBFC is scheduled for release April 2023 as long as I can get the Boxes and Instructions printed within a reasonable amount of time. I also need to buy more collectors coin blanks for laser printing. Till next rant.... CC

Hello, I've recently been rebuilding my Coleco ADAM setup, most of which was sold off decades ago. Now I have a fully classic working system and a newly built ADAM drive emulator (ADE). All seems well, but I've been informed that I should be able to daisy chain the keyboard off the OUTPUT jack from a physical disk drive. When attempting this I get no light or function on the keyboard, although this keyboard (and another spare keyboard) work just fine when connected directly to the front or side ADAMNet jacks. Is there something I am doing wrong? I can successfully chain 2 physical disk drives without problem, but was advised to get keyboard chained before moving on to ADE coexistence with physical drive. Thanks for your advice, Shawn

OK, reality sucks, but I am giving in to the inevitable and putting a donation button on my ADAM page. Although last time I paid for hosting and domain registration, I signed up for three years, my package runs out in 2022 and I will have to come up with money to renew or just let the whole thing go. If you're feeling generous at any point, go there and find the DONATION button at www.sacnews.net/adamcomputer.

Complete ColecoVision Adam for sale - $265 CAD/$210 US + Shipping or Local Pick-up Tested today and working. Hardware includes printer, main console, keyboard, and one controller. Monitor is not included, however I will provide cable and instructions to connect (any monitor with composite video and audio in / separate speakers will work). Software includes Buck Rogers, SmartLogo (in box w/ manual) and Carnival cartridge. SmartLogo is a great introduction to programming for young learners! The printer works as a power supply and moves, however is no longer suitable for printing. The tape drive is working well.

This is a bit of a followup to a post I already made about a power supply I was working on. Anyway I was able to get the adam to run by just running my own wires to the db9 connector instead of using a serial cable. I now have the problem that the thing only runs if I hold down one of the reset switches and even then the picture is noisy, and the channel 3/4 switch seems to do nothing. If anyone knows what's going on here let me know please. I want my desk space back

So im attempting to make a psu for my adam. I bought one that somoneone on YouTube recommended and followed a pinnout I found. When I tried it I got a black screen with some static. Checked the voltages at the supply while plugged in to the adam and they seem normal. Checked the voltage at the end of the cable and they were the same. Checked the voltages on the other side of the connector inside of the adam and they were low (like 10v, 1.7v, -6v) not sure what's up if the connector is bad, checked a few of the pins on it and they didn't have high resistance. I don't know if this is normal or not or even if the computer works, so any help is appreciated.

A project I have been working on for the last two years is nearing completion i.e. my next book called 'Programming Games for the Colecovision and Adam in Assembler'. It includes a tutorial section working through the steps of creating a game, with a Z80 assembler primer and information on how to set up a cross development environment (similar but extended from my Let's Make a Retro Game series). It also includes a complete Colecovision BIOS reference guide, covering ALL of the jump table BIOS calls with explanations and examples for using each call. There are extensive memory and port maps, also with explanations etc. It will have a dedicated web site section where you can download the code (for lazy typers :)). The early pre-order link for the Kindle edition is available here. Cover is still a draft. Shortly after I have released the Kindle Edition, there will also be a physical print edition available on Amazon's print to order service, which I used for my last book and has been received well. It does have some colour screen shots and pictures in it, let me know how many people would be interested in a full colour edition, rather than a colour cover with black and white interior. The book is currently 90% complete, with the majority of the content completed, but I have about ten quality read through passes to do and need to tidy-up/check all the source code etc. I am aiming for a 1st August 2020 release date at this stage.

SALE OVER - THANKS!!!
-
I am posting here rather than the For Sale area because I am in need of ColecoVision/ADAM enthusiasts. An expensive vacation has left me short of cash to renew domain registration and hosting for my ADAM Family Computer System web page which I've maintained for 22 years!!! As such, I'm selling off some of my ColecoVision games. Most require the SGM. All are $40 each plus shipping (U.S. shipping only, sorry). I need to raise $189.94 by the end of December. I'm listing 12 games, but as I only need to sell five. Once that goal is reached, the rest will be taken off sale. You can find the list and instructions here at the old site of my web page: http://www.sacnews.net/adamcomputer Thanks Joe Blenkle

The Super Game Module is quite an interesting piece of gaming history indeed. Same can be said about the Adam. Both aimed to expand the capabilities of the Colecovision, but sadly, only the Adam got released, and with problems such as half of those sold being defective, the FRICKIN' POWER BUTTON BEING ON THE PRINTER, and arguably the introductory price. The original Super Game Module, however, didn't have half the issues that plagued the Adam, yet was ditched completely some time after it was announced, regardless of how ahead of its time it was. It was an add-on that attached directly into the expansion slot of the Colecovision(something which Expansion module #1 aka the VCS adapter did also) and played its own set of games that came in the form of metal and plastic wafers that could be seen as the precursor to the hucards used by the TG-16/PC Engine. Should Coleco have instead cancelled the Adam and embraced the Super Game Module?

I read about this but only a brief description. Walters software Is there such a thing? How far did it go? If so why not expand this into the new ADAM OSX? Anyone want to fill in the blanks.

I'm looking for someone to do some repair work on a 1977/78 TRS-80 Model 1 (Level 1) and a Coleco Adam. The TRS-80 needs a key replaced (I have a spare keyboard to pull parts from) and has an issue with the video sync (I think). The Coleco Adam is having some power issues, but I think it's coming from the console itself as it won't power on when one or both of the cassette drives are plugged in, but the power light comes on when they're disconnected. It also has no video, as far as I can tell. I'm more flexible with the TRS-80, since I already have the motherboard removed from the cabinet and could easily ship that, but I'm hoping to find someone who already owns an Adam so I can ship just the console with the data drives installed. I do have a spare printer motherboard I could send as well if needed, though, but it would be more expensive. Anyway, if this sounds like something you could do, let me know and we can discuss pricing. Thanks!

Looking for a Working/Tested/Great condition/Clean Colecovision system with at least on controller (2 preferably), power supply. Doesn't have to come with original box. AV Modded is a plus, but not required. Included games are good, but not needed as I plan to grab a flash cart. PM me if you have one available! I'm in Denver, CO, 80205. Thanks, ISB

This Colecovision/Adam keyboard was part of a Commodore lot I bought a few months ago. It's missing a few keys, a bit of yellowing but otherwise feels solid and in good shape. I have no way of testing it as I don't have a Coleco system nor do I have the cable to connect it. Free or Trade, just pay shipping (US only) as I know someone can use this either for parts or a cleanup/restore project. PM me if interested and we can discuss the cost to ship, etc. Cheers, ISB

So about a month ago, I bought an ADAM. On Monday, another one followed me home... https://youtu.be/Ngj3YN8y_4I

Hi all! While I enjoy these forums, I've never really had anything meaningful to add to them, so I've never joined joined until today. I've been at these retro video games since they were brand new, so I'm fairly familiar with them, and 8-bit era computers (the PET, TRS-80, etc). So the other day, I saw a huge Adam box in good shape, and managed to haggle the price down to where I couldn't resist, because the unit wouldn't power up. They even threw in one of those old wooden cassette holders full of programs. Nice! Got it home, and I've been doing all the normal things, clean it well, power switches, power adapter, clean and reseat chips, the usual. But I cannot get this one figured out, so I am hopeful someone here can help, or at least give me a new direction to go. Note, this is the add-on Adam (Expansion #3), not the Adam with the built-in CV. Symptoms: Power up the CV and Adam plugged in, the printer goes to home, indexes the daisy wheel, sets ok. Video is black, kind of a high pitch squeal from the TV. Unplug the tape drives and modem, no change. Press the reset button on the Adam - no change. Press it on the CV, and I get the Colecovision rainbow screen (do not insert expansion module, etc). Ok, so I test the Expansion #1 adapter on the side port of the Adam, and hit the CV reset, it plays the Atari game well, but I already have a 2600 for that... Unplugged the Atari adapter, and put in Slither, pressed reset on the CV, and got 12 wide vertical bars. Changed to Smurfs & Omega Race, same deal. Took out the cartridge, still get the black screen on the Adam, but now when I press reset on the CV, no rainbow screen, just the same 12 bars. There is currently no way to test the CV without the Adam, as the power brick it came with had 5v, until I turned on the power, then it went to 1.38v. With the Adam power supply, it measures 5v at the switch. I have a new Power Supply in transit, but it's a few days out, and won't help the Adam anyways. So I'm really out of ideas, and I'm not sure what else to try. Quite frankly, I'm not even sure where to look next, so any suggestions will be tried. Thanks, ~Allison

I just recently came across a new Coleco Adam computer. But, since space is a dwindling commodity at my house, I was really just getting it to check it out, make sure it worked, and ultimately see if I could resell it someday. Well, as soon as I followed my intuition to allow for a cartridge to be slipped in {no manuals included unfortunately}, I was hooked. I immediately said, "Now I know why people collect these things." That's really all, in case it helps someone out there who is on the fence about collecting this system. I guess I will add as well that these old systems, plastic bags and styrofoam are all very amazing things. The box to this thing looked like it had been consumed by bugs for decades and/or laying in the edge of a pond or puddle for years {even the welcome letter they left in the printer looks to have been nibbled on from time to time}, but inside the contents are new like they day they should have been opened for Christmas {within reason of course}. I'll certainly save the foam. But, unless the Preservers of All Things ADAM speak up quickly, that box is going out with the garbage VERY soon. Also, any useful info, links etc. to get me started on my way to ADAM bliss {or invitations to secret ADAM societies} will be usefully appreciated.

Up for sale are the citrus3000psi RGB boards for the Colecovision/ADAM. These boards are designed to be soldered to the bottom of the VDP and provide RGBS to an output connector of your choice. To properly calibrate these boards, 3 onboard POTs are used to adjust each color individually. Please note that to properly calibrate the board, you MUST use an oscilloscope. If you do not calibrate with an oscilloscope and choose to adjust by eye, please note that any compatibility issues, damage, or world ending results via the summoning of Cthulu are solely your responsibility. Each kit is sold as a DIY and fully assembled/tested before shipping. If you receive a board and have issues, please contact me. If the issues are found to be related to misuse or improper installation, you are on your own. If there appears to be a defect in manufacturing, I will work with you towards an amicable resolution. No output connectors are provided, except with install service. Output connectors can be whatever you wish but the cables themselves must be pass-through, ie no capacitors or resistors installed. If you need assistance with purchasing cables or output connectors please reach out and I can answer your questions. Each board is $30 shipped in the Continental US (CONUS). If you do not feel confident with the installation or would prefer to have it installed for you, I will be providing install services with oscilloscope calibration of the board. Cost of this service is $80 including the board, but not including return shipping.
