Not only are there too many enemies, some you can't dodge and run into and die. And then there are the shots that are almost utterly impossible to dodge so that hits you too. I lose all 5 lives before level 1 is over. Some may say "difficult", others may say "frustrating", but I think the word to use to describe this game is "broken." How in the world did this game go through playtesting and not one person said "This game is too hard!"? I guess they were counting on the graphics being nice to sell the game, but graphics alone do not a good game make. The Atari 2600 proved this over and over again.

It's not something I would play for hours on end, though. It's more realistic than Mario Kart, which is bad because you often hear the squealing of the tires because of the hairpin turns in the tracks. And it gets pretty hard pretty fast even on the beginner's mode. Once I got up to the Bayside track, I consistently came in at the bottom, this after finishing first or second on the first four tracks. Luckily, the game has passwords, so I bet I could check out every track if I wanted to. The other racing game available at the GBA's launch was the similarly-titled Top Gear GT Championship, but first I have to play the games I got from eBay.

No, instead, most of the times you press a button and it doesn't do anything. At all. Play control is HORRID on this. And this is a game that needs good play control because it is a minigame collection. I often ended up placing last because of the poor button pressing detection. I tawt I pwessed a button. Nope, says the game, you didn't so you have to stand there while the computer controlled players get to move. It's like the game is punishing you for playing it. Argh! I wanted Elmer Fudd to come in and shoot me in the head to end the misery, but he wasn't in the game, so I just turned the game off.

Company: Sega / Sonic TeamRelease date: June 2001 (launch title)Size: 32 MegabitsNP's Rating: 4/5 (v. 146 p. 116)ESRB Rating: EI bet this would be a blast using Multiplayer, but unfortunately, time goes on, and few people still play their GBAs, let alone Chu Chu Rocket. The object of this game is to lead mice (called Chu chus) on a grid into rockets using arrows they follow to blast them off to safety. In some puzzles, there are cats that try to catch the mice, but they too have to follow the arrows, so it's best to use this to your advantage, also. The snag is, there's only usually 1-3 arrows per level, so there's some strategy involved in placing the arrows. This is a thinking person's puzzler, and, beside from Super Mario Advance, one game I actually enjoyed playing. This game reminds me of Chip's Challenge for the Lynx and PC, and fans of that game should definitely have fun playing this one. This game is also available on the Sega Dreamcast console, but I don't have a Dreamcast, so I couldn't compare the GBA port. By the way, I'm putting this as a launch title even though it wasn't reviewed in Nintendo Power until the issue after the launch for reasons unknown to me.Up next: Namco Museum
  5. This would have been a good racing game except for one thing: Bumping into the walls is bad. What I wonder is how do they expect you to take sharp corners WITHOUT bumping into the walls? Naturally, I find myself bumping into the walls all too frequently, which leads to me losing power and eventually having to quit the game. And that's in Training mode with nobody else on the track. Stupid move with the punishing you for something you have to do a lot. It's like the game is punishing you for playing it. Now I thought I was a decent enough video game player, but after playing those last two games, I feel like I suck at playing them. But I think things will be brighter. These are what's left of the launch titles I've yet to try: GT Advance, Chu Chu Rocket, Rayman Advance, Konami Krazy Racers, Namco Museum, Pitfall, Tweety and the Magic Gems, Iridion 3D and Super Dodgeball Advance. I'm going to my used video game store tomorrow to see what I can find of these and hopefully I'll begin liking GBA games.

    Snood

    The dictionary defines "snood" as a net or fabric cap for the hair. That being said, it has nothing to do with snoods. I'm guessing they picked Snood as the title of the game because they thought it was a nonsense word. Anyway, what Snood is is a Bust-a-Move (or Puzzle Bobble) clone. In case you don't know what Bust-A-Move is, it's a puzzle game where you shoot colored bubbles from the bottom of the screen up to the top. If you match three or more of the same color, they disappear and points are scored (or whatever.) In fact, the game is so similar, I am surprised the makers of Bust-A-Move didn't go after Destination Software, Inc. I guess times have changed since the Atari vs. Magnavox case and neither one cared. In fact, the only difference Snood has with Bust-A-Move is that the bubbles have been replaced with anthropomorphic dots (again stealing from another company. M&Ms, Seven-Up?) I'm guessing this game was for the poor kids who blew all their money on getting the new at the time GBA and wanted a cool game but couldn't afford one.
  7. This is one of those times I fear the game is too difficult for its target audience. "Rugrats" for those who don't know, was a popular animated show on Nickelodeon about talking babies. And since the show was on Nickelodeon, I deduced that the game is for kids. Well those kids really need to know how to play a difficult video game. I barely beat the first level on this thing. You can choose which levels to beat first off. I went into a level inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk (any guesses as to why? ) As I was playing the game, I figured out some stuff (I didn't have any instruction manual to help me). #1 : Health is determined by diapers. You start out with a whole bunch of them. I didn't really know what happened when you ran out of them. Do the kids die or something? #2: When you find another kid, you can reach higher places by pressing Up and A. This allows for a Diddy Kong getting on Dixie Kong's shoulders and then jumping style setup (from Donkey Kong Country 2.) While I was exploring the area, I accidentally did this a lot. Guess the directional pad on my Game Boy Micro is wonky or something. Anyway, like Mario, the kids have stuff to collect. Instead of coins, it's pacifiers (fitting.) Pressing B throws different items related to the level. In the JatB level it was what looked like bananas. I don't know what good this does because it doesn't seem to faze the enemies any. Anyway, it's kind of fun if you're into the Rugrats TV show, but if not, I say pass on it.
  8. X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse Release date: 9/8/01 Company: Activision Basically what this is is a TMNT Arcade clone. Yep, another one. Gee, what fun these are. Move a few inches, fight enemies, then move another few inches, fight even more enemies. And also, I have no idea what I'm doing, either. At the beginning you pick from one of four X-Men and then the story (which is weird) begins. Seems the X-Men have been thrown into another universe, only this time, their hideaway has been in ruins. I've never read the X-Men, so I have no idea what I'm doing here. up next: Well, here are some possibilities. Here's what's next on the release list: Jurassic Park III: Park Builder, High Heat MLB 2002, Klonoa: Empire of Dreams, Dexter's Lab: Deesaster Strikes, and Tetris Worlds.
  9. First off, I hardly know anything about the cartoon series this was based on. All I know is it's about a group of skater kids that hang out. That being said, the premise is simple: You skate around levels, pressing R switches you from skateboard to rollerblades, pressing R again switches you from rollerblades to shoes, and pressing R again completes the cycle by switching you from shoes to skateboard. On the skateboard, pressing B makes you jump onto things in the background, while B not being pressed makes you skate in the foreground. With that being said, imagine my anger when I have 13 of 15 stars, only to realize that there's a giant wall, and before that is a passageway under it, but you need a key to enter. Only problem is, the programmers forgot to put the key into the game! I searched high and low for that stupid key, bopping on enemies' heads, hoping to find a key somewhere, but to no avail. That's right, kids, level 1 is impossible to beat! Major bummer, huh? Totally un-radical. To start off things, you could pick between two levels, maybe the key is in that other level and you need to pass that level before you can pass the one I selected, but then that would be totally unfair. I doubt that's the case anyway, and IMO just another case of Impossible Mission for the 78000-syndrome, which is too bad because it's a decent enough platformer, which can be aggravating at times. Unfortunately, there was no effing key!
  10. Company: Kemco Release Date: June 2001 (launch title) Size: 32 Megabits NP's rating: 2.5/5 (vol. 145 p. 119) ESRB rating: E Finally, a game I can agree with the rating NP gave! After playing this for a half-hour, it's kind of an interesting game, but I noticed a few flaws, one of them being the helpful turn warnings stay on longer than needed, making the car go into the grass (or beyond the side of the track). Another one is that the cars seem like they speed up after the first lap. I know this because I made a simple oval track in the track editor (yes Virginia, there is a track editor) and sure enough, the cars did speed up after the first lap. Why? Even with these few major flaws, it's better than GT Advance Championship Racing. While most of these launch titles I most definitely will not play ever again, I can see myself maybe wanting to play this again, which is a huge compliment coming from me. After this one, I only have one more launch title: Army Men Advance. I have yet to buy this, so it'll be a while before I can review it.
  11. Company: AtlusRelease Date: June 2001 (Launch Title)Size: 32 MegabitsNP's rating: 4/5 (vol. 145 p.116)ESRB rating: EI admit it: I've never played dodgeball in PE class. So I had no idea there were rules to the game. And not only that, there are formations like in football and stats to take into account when choosing a team, etc. I thought this was going to be a fun minigame type thing where you hit people with balls. How wrong I was. This makes dodgeball more like a Madden NFL game than dodgeball. I can't play this game, it's too hard, especially when I have no idea what I'm doing. And I'm guessing that it's one of those games where having the instruction booklet is of no use. If you're going to make a game like this, why not replace the rubber ball with a football and have the people run towards an end zone? It doesn't really help that there's also no professional dodgeball league and no dodgeball stars. But kudos to Atlas for trying something different, but I didn't like it because it was more complex than what I thought it was going to be.
  12. Company: UbisoftRelease Date: June 2001 (launch title)Size: 64 MegabitsNP's rating: 4.5/5ESRB rating: EGBA Chronogaming is back! Rayman is usually known for its colorful, great graphics, and his first foray onto GBA is nothing short of beautiful as terms of graphics. It's not a bad little platforming game, either, especially if you buy it used and have some levels already beaten for you to browse through. (I cheat, I know.) One thing I don't like is that you learn moves. This isn't the only platformer that does this, either. Why not have all the moves available in your arsenal at the beginning? I also have Rayman for Sega Saturn, and I think that this first-gen GBA game has graphics as good as that Saturn game. Yes, that's saying a lot, but this game has shown the capabilities of what the GBA can do. I think I have about half the launch titles mini-reviewed at this point, so that's good.Next up: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
  13. It's back! GBA Chronogaming is back! Seeing as how this is from BAM! Entertainment, which has a lousy track record, I was expecting a lousy game. And that is exactly what I got. It could have been a contender, but instead, with the difficulty setting on ONE, I was being wiped on the floor. This didn't last three minutes until I turned it off in disgust. The CPU opponent was kicking me, punching me and outright beating me up. Sure, I got a few kicks in (or did I? I couldn't tell.) but I suck at this game. One thing I can say is that the music and graphics are good for a launch title, but if the play control is lousy, does that really matter? I think I'll leave professional wrestling to the professionals. Next Up: F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.
  14. company: Activision size: 64 MB NP review: volume 145, page 116 (4/5) This game unfortunately didn't come with an instruction booklet, which is where I'm guessing all the important info is. Luckily, I have the NP issue which explains the stuff in it. The game is a basic platformer. Except there's no lives. Instead, there is a life meter (stupid), which once it gets to empty, the game ends. I don't know why, though, since there seems to be infinite continues. Each level ends with a "diary" which explains what stuff you did in the level. With it, I figured out that it's good to kill the golden enemies in each level (if you can find them.) Killing enemies is easy, it's just like in Mario's world (jump on most of them.) There is one special move you can earn called a dash. The last saved game i went in had 6 in a row. I erased one and so far i've gotten to be able to use 4 in a row. All you need to do is press up, and then jump, and you dash upwards, or sideways (depending on which way you press the control + after you press up.) This move gets you on ledges that are out of reach with a normal jump. All in all, the game is kind of fun. The graphics are great for an early GBA release. My final score: 6.5/10 next up: Earthworm Jim.
  15. This game is technically impossible. Nobody (and I mean nobody) can get past level 1-2. I guess the game testers just quit testing the game after defeating level 1-1 and said "That's good enough." Well, had they gone past that and actually attempted to defeat level 1-2, they would have found a major flaw in the game. The snag is it is impossible for the stupid guy to jump high enough to get onto a ledge. I tried getting an enemy into the pit and that didn't work. I tried doing a special jump that works with enemies to go higher with the box and that didn't work. So basically you're stuck in 1-2, which is sad because it was a good attempt at a game. And anyone who claims they have gotten past 1-2 are lying, like the people on GameFAQs. They made everything past 1-1 up. After all, what's the use of having a FAQ for such a short game? I hate these impossible games. Major fail for making 1-2 technically impossible to beat, like Impossible Mission for the Atari 7800, this one is also impossible. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this. We all know Impossible Mission is impossible, but I guess nobody has played Klonoa on GBA and found out it is impossible. That, and there was at least a 5-minute long introduction story. I hate games that have the story inside them. That's what instruction booklets are used for.
  16. company: Konami release date: 9/14/2001 landmarks: The first game released after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Well, here we have another movie-based game. Well, I shouldn't really say "another", this is only the second one ever released for the GBA, if you don't count TV-themed ones. Here, Konami did something really interesting: Instead of making ONE game out of Jurassic Park III, they made, well, III of them. This was the first one to be released. And there is a difference between this and other movie-based games in terms of gameplay: This one plays a lot like Sim City, where, well, you're a park builder. I am not sure how to play "strategy" games, so I'm going to leave this one alone. I can tell you that after the better-than-average introduction with various dinosaurs doing whatever dinosaurs do, once you get into the game, the graphics change dramatically for worse, The in-game graphics remind me of Chu Chu Rocket, a previously played in this blog section. And a disappointment, there is only one save slot. So if I had wanted to make my own park, I would have to erase the one already made. There is a cursor, where you can click on the people. Above them, Sim-style, are happy or sad faces telling you what they think of the park you built. If you click on people, they will give you a sentence or so of what they think. The trouble is, there aren't very many preprogrammed sentences in the game, so I got a lot of repeating ones. Clicking on dinosaurs gives you a menu about what to do with them. I suppose it would be kind of fun if I was into this sort of thing, but I still haven't watched the first Jurassic Park movie, let alone the Lost World, and I don't plan on doing so any time soon. So if you're into Sim City and/or park management, this game is for you. Otherwise, meh.
  17. Finally I got my hands on Caesar's Palace Advance. I wrote down what games it had, but I lost the piece of paper, and I'm too lazy to turn the game on just to see what games it has. I know it has video poker, because that's what I spent most of my time with so far. You win an unusually large % of the time. On the Jacks or Better video poker machine, I earned about $20, which is a LOT considering the amount of games I had played. Way better than Lynx Casino for the Atari Lynx (or just about any other gambling game for any system, save Golden Nugget Casino for the DS.) There was also roulette, which was hard to get the hang of moving the cursor to make a bet, but I finally got the hang of it. Also, there was Blackjack, but you have to know a lot about the game to play it (I thought I did, but as it turns out, I know very little about the casino version.) There was also craps, but I didn't play that either. A lot of these games I surmise are just random number generators with spiffy graphics. Well the graphics are good, especially for a GBA game. There was also video keno, but I don't know how to play that either. I've always wondered how people can get addicted to losing money. LOL. I went into a casino once. I gave them 25 cents on the video poker before leaving. After years of playing gambling video games, I wanted to experience the real thing. It wasn't really too satisfying, and nothing I could say I could get hooked on. I know there's a Caesar's Palace for the NES, SNES and Game Boy, but this one is a lot better because there's more games for it, although I could well be just as happy if there was only video poker.
  18. Release date: 9/28/2001 (almost ten years ago! It's been THAT long since the GBA debuted?!) Another one of those games where medium difficulty is too hard and easy difficulty is too easy. On Medium, I finished last and on Easy, it barely put up a fight. And there's only one track you can actually race on. There might be more, but damned if I can figure out how to get to them. US Open mode is only two races on the same track, and if you win both of them, you're the champion and you get nothing except a screen saying Ricky Carmichael (or whoever you picked) is the champion. Wrong, except if Ricky himself is playing the game. And there's a race alone mode to get the feel of the game apparently. As for graphics, they're polygon based except for the objects like colored boxes, the racers and car tires half-stuck in the sand. These tires only have three directions to face when you're turning so animation is choppy at best. So anyway, it's not a very good game, but if you're a fan of motocross, I guess it warrants a look. up next: Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace
  19. Pac-Man Collection is a collection of Pac-Man games. First, there's the normal Pac-Man, playable in either full-screen or scrolling. Then there's Pac-Man Arrangement. This one puts Pac-Man in sort of a Super Mario Bros.-style worlds. Of course, you're still in a maze and same goal is to eat all the dots, but there's additions such as pills which do various things, new enemies that try to ram you, and other interesting things. Of course, the game gets real hard real quick but lucky you: you have infinite continues! It took me a long time to beat all 5 levels, and i really needed all those continues, too. Pac-Attack is a Tetris-like puzzle game in which groups of bricks, ghosts, Pac-Men, or a combination of two fall. A row of bricks disappear, but if one or more ghost is in a row, the bricks will not disappear. Your job is to get the Pac-Men to eat the ghosts so the bricks can fall down and disappear. And, then there's Pac-Mania, a port of the arcade game. I knew this game from the unlicensed Tengen NES version. It has bigger, harder, scrolling mazes, and it's harder even though Pac-Man has the added ability to jump. So what do I make of all this? This is a game that Pac-Man fanatics will really get a kick out of, and so will people who aren't crazy about Pac-Man (like myself). I enjoyed most of it. up next: Fortress.
  20. This has two big things going against it. First, it's an RPG. I don't know how to play them. So I couldn't get out of the first area. Second, there's also a battle mode which has horribly difficult computer AI and I die first all the time. So right there, those two things combined rival Castlevania for the worst game I've played so far in this blog category. Bomberman is one big BOMB. up next: Pac-Man Collection
  21. Release: June 2001 (launch title)ESRB Rating: EI couldn't find this one in my two issues of launch title reviews of NP, but its release is still listed as June 2001, and I already had it, so needing a game for this blog, I chose this one. Namco Museum has five classic arcade games: Ms. Pac-Man, Pole Position, Dig Dug, Galaga and Galaxian. The controls are what you'd expect on everything except Pole Position, where low and high gears are controlled by the Right shoulder button (in the 2600 version, it is down, and I was trying to push down with nothing happening) My favorite out of all these is Dig Dug. To review this collection would be to review each game individually, but since most people already know what these games are like, I won't waste my time, but I will say that this is the third game out of the launch titles that I like.Up next: I don't know, am going to the used game store soon. If it's still there, I'll get Tweety and the Magic Gems. If it's gone, then Super Dodge Ball advance.
