I bought a new in box joust cart. I looks legit but I’m not so sure. Is there a way to tell if it’s fake? Thanks for your help.

I've tested and completed my review of the latest and greatest Atari 5200 controller adapter made by Atariage member, Ikonsgr. It's essentially a bohoki-clone that enables you to use PC 15 pin controllers on the SuperSystem. In the video, I've demonstrated a good number of analog and digital PC controllers (gamepads, keypads, joysticks, steering controllers, and flight yokes) being used to effectively play 5200 games. Some of these controllers have the ability to be used as both analog and digital controllers (Makopad PC gamepad, Radio Shack gamepad, and the Vortex 3D), right-hand/left hand switching digital gamepads (Gravis PC Gamepad and the Reveal Gamepad), and there's even one which has the ability to switch between self-centering and non-self-centering ("dead-fish stick") analog joystick control. Check it out:

https://web.archive.org/web/20010720152157/http://cafeman.www9.50megs.com:80/ I found a 2001 version of my old site (Well, some of it) on the internet Archive. This site was a part time project of mine, mostly about 2D games on the Saturn. It was created with hand-coded HTML and MS Paint between 1998 and 2001, and it was basically my introduction to web pages and picture formats, early on. The site is still there but my Atari 5200 stuff took it all over eventually... Http://cafeman.www9.50megs.com/atari/atari5200.html I can't remember if I purposely deleted the original Sega stuff, or accidentally. But I thought it was gone forever, so it was a treat to search and rediscover it. Check it out, you might be mildly entertained. Edit - ha! I found another view with some additional, more Dreamcast oriented pages! I don't remember writing all these, too long ago. https://web.archive.org/web/20020302213934/http://cafeman.www9.50megs.com:80/index.html

Today I have some relatively new information on a $17 controller adapter that you can obtain on Ebay that, when combined with a PC 15 pin gameport to Atari 5200 controller adapter (like the one currently being made by bohoki) will get your Atari 2600, Sega Master System, and Sega Genesis controllers working on your 5200. What's extra awesome about this is that the Sega controllers have compatibility with the two button games, and this is what the Masterplay Clone enables. (Unfortunately, no one is currently producing the Masterplay Clone for purchasing, though.) Here is the Ebay link to the product: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Amiga-Atari-Amstrad-Commodore-DB9-9Pin-Joystick-to-15Pin-Port-support-Usb-Adpt/272348471848?hash=item3f693be228:g:Df4AAOSwUd9aaMnL I've ordered adapters from this Ebay seller, Ikonsgr74, since 2015 and can vouch for his top-notch workmanship. He will not disappoint you. I have some additional good news: The Atari 2600 Trakball works with it to play the digital games that may be worth a try on the 5200. I have tried it with Gyruss, Ballblazer, and Galaxian with nice control results- especially Gyruss. The trakball unfortunately doesn't work with the analog-only games like Missile Command, Tempest, Star Wars Arcade, and Super Breakout. For two button digital games like Defender and Dreadnaught Factor, the Sega Sportspad (which is a trackball) also works great. If you have a couple of Camerica NES products (The receiver for the "Freedom Stick" with Genesis cables and the "Freedom Connection" transmitter device) you can add those adapters and get your NES controllers working on the 5200. I have enjoyed playing with my NES Starmaster joystick and NES Max gamepad on games like Dig Dug and Defender. In fact, on Defender, the Star Master joystick helped me to get my best ever score of around 89,000. That joystick has a very satisfying 'click' for each direction it is tilted- though it's not actually a microswitch-laden joystick like the Quickshot II Plus. Hard to describe, but it's just a perfect joystick and I'm very grateful to be able to use it to play my favorite 5200 games. I've detected no lag by the way, so that's good... Also there's a way to connect the 8bitdo NES Retro Receiver to the 5200 via the two adapters (and Camerica NES products and NES Fourscore) and play your 5200 digital games wirelessly with the controllers it's compatible with: The Dual Shock 4, Dual Shock 3, Wii Remote, and Wii U Pro Controller. I've tested it and had great success just last evening. Hope you enjoy the info. Special thanks to Swami for being the 1st guinea pig to try out Ikonsgr74's newly revised controller adapter on the 5200 (via being added to the bohoki adapter). I'm definitely grateful for learning about this from you.

This site has some interesting tidbits about Williams arcade machines, including a multi-game cabinet that runs real (not emulated) versions of Joust, Sinistar, Robotron, Splat, and Bubbles. http://www.seanriddle.com/willy2.html#pics Why do this? Well at the time (and possibly today as well) there were slight differences in blitter operations between the real machines and the emulated versions. Here's an excerpt: In older versions of MAME and in several xx-in-one boards, blits happen pretty much instantaneously, unlike the real games where the Special Chips have a maximum throughput of 1 MB/second (not counting the time it takes to write to the registers to start the blit). This results in games that appear normal at the beginning levels, but become much harder at the later levels. Robotron can have so many enemies on screen at once that all cannot be moved in one video frame. So the game moves as many as possible, then moves the rest in the next frame. With an "instantaneous blitter", all the enemies can be moved in one video frame, making the game play much faster. ... About 13% of the blits had different results in MAME than on the real game, and about 11% of the blits took a different amount of time in MAME than on the real game. I'm sure that these blits represent a very small proportion of blits done in actual game play, but they may still contribute to game play anomalies. http://seanriddle.com/blitter.html Defender and Stargate are included in the cabinet too, although those two don't actually implement blitter code.

Whenever i turn on Joust for the 2600, the color doesn't come up on the screen, it's all black and white. I have a little over 100 games in my collection and Joust seems to be the only game that has this problem. Any tips i could use to make the color come on?

Joust. In 1988, it was THE main reason I purchased the then relatively recently released Atari 7800 at Kay-Bee Toys in the Jefferson Valley mall. I was a huge fan of the arcade version, owned the 2600 version, and so bought the 7800 along with Joust- to me, Pole Position 2 was just a bonus. It was some years later, probably around 1998, when I stumbled across a 5200 at a town-wide garage sale. It took some effort repairing the broken controller plugs, but it was well worth it for Berzerk, Qix, Defender, and a few others. Some time later I found Joust for it, and while obviously not as good as the 7800 version, was still nice enough to play. I also played the NES version, which was great, but not quite up to the 7800 version- the latter just had more of the "essence" of the original somehow. Then in 2001 I found out about Joust for the ColecoVision. Although only a screenshot and description, it was still very impressive, and what struck me as curious was that it was supposed to have been released in 1983- and that it, like Galaxian, was superior to the 5200 version.Too bad it was never finished. Then it finally was completed. So- having had enough money- I bought a copy. It did not disappoint. Although the sound of two opponents meeting at equal height is missing and the pteradactyl looks a bit crude, it is overall better than the 5200 version, most notably the way the enemies move and the character graphics. Although the sound is a bit more complete on the 5200 and the tree stump on the bottom of the playfield is closer to the arcade on the 5200, the CV wins out, even if there are never more than five enemies onscreen at once. I also like the title screen. Absolutely superb. What makes this game unusual was that it was a "keystone" game. The reason I bought a 7800 was for Joust. Had this game come out in 1983 for the CV, especially along with Dig Dug and Pac Man, and had I known about games like Boulder Dash and Fortune Builder; and had Lord of the Dungeon been released...I never would have bought a 7800. It was Joust that really did it. Was there ever a game which, had it come out on the CV back then, would have prevented you from purchasing another system?
