I ran across a fun little Q-and-A style article I wrote back in 2012, and thought I'd share it with y'all. It's an interview with Ted Arnold, the current owner and one of the founders of Pinball Pete's, the arcade in East Lansing and Ann Arbor. Pinball Pete's, both the East Lansing and the short-lived Frandor locations, were my video game and pinball hangout. It was awesome to talk to Ted, and learn how three young brothers ended up starting an arcade. You'll also learn some of the "secrets" like why the pink elephant logo, and who was Pete exactly? Here is the PDF version of the article, straight from my website. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers, Smeg

Even though I grew up with, and have a nice little collection of video arcade cabs, I often find myself really getting the bug to somehow fit more Electro-Mechanical units into my collection. I'm not sure why, but these pre video game era pinballs and such fascinate me with how they work and even sound. Each game has its own quirks and, unlike a video arcade, EM machines can even often get an issue, then work it out of themselves with a bit of heavy play. I think part of th fun is how violent some of these machines are when working. Shuffler bowlers like my Triple Score tend to hum, thump, click, and bang when they are resetting for each throw and even the pinballs get odd hums and such as different circuits energize up in anticipation of you either hitting a 'special' or some bonus. So, who else here has found themselves oddly drawn to the EM side and what is it that you like about them?

Its certainly not possible at all. Maybe there could be 2 arcade flashbacks: one for arcade games from The formative years of Atari up until the end of the Atari Inc. era in mid 1984, while the 2nd system would contain games made by Atari Games Corp.(AKA Atari's arcade branch after the home computer and console divisions of the company were sold to Mr. Tramiel.) What do you folks think??

So im bored, wanting to make an arcade style controller for my TI. I have an old (broken) NES advantage arcade controller hanging around. It went through a flood and never worked after that. Why not rewire it to work for my TI? I should be able to locate what pins do what on a TI controller, then use those to hook up to the Advantage. I dont THINK it should be too tough What do you all think?

Does anyone have a Neo Geo arcade cabinet available?
KreatorKat posted a topic in Arcade and Pinball
Hi. I already have a thread in the wanted section asking the question in the title above, but I figured that many arcade lovers and cabinet owners never look there but hang around here. I am looking for a non-conversion Neo Geo cabinet- 1, 2, or 4 slots is fine. Please PM me if you have one available or know of one around NJ. Thanks all and have a good weekend! -
This is more or less for the locals, but I have a sit-down Neo-Geo MVS cabinet I am looking to sell. The monitor works and the MVS board includes a 120-in-1 multicart. Both joystick panels work (Player 1 stick and buttons were replaced with new parts; new parts will be included for Player 2 side in case you want to install them). Includes cash box, but there are no locks on the coin door (cheap fix). I'm looking to get $300 for it (firm). If you are interested, send me a PM. I am located in Fairfax, VA. I live on the second floor, but this is pretty lightweight and I can easily strap it to an appliance dolly and take it down on my own. Will probably be willing to trade towards console video game items, but cash is nicer.

Found! Hello everyone, I am currently looking for a dedicated Neo Geo MVS arcade cabinet in a good state of repair (as in all functions works as they should and it looks very nice). Any number of slots (1,2,4,6) is fine, preferably not 6. It needs to be in New Jersey or near NJ (such as the NJ side of Pennsylvania or New York) so I can pick it up. I am looking to pay about $500, maybe more if comes with a good amount of good condition cartridges. I look forward to hearing from anyone with one available!

From the album: Donkey Kong Arcade Sales Flyers
These are the original sales flyers used to promote the original DK & DK JR arcade games in the 1980s. As a huge ColecoVision fan I wanted to share these. And while they may not be specifically for the ColecoVision, Donkey Kong was a huge part of the legacy of that system. I'm also a huge Nintendo fanboy, so I bought them to frame behind my Donkey Kong arcade cabinet! Enjoy! =)-

Hello, I just have a simple question about terminology related to arcade machines. What is the "art" on the flat or slightly slanted part of a typical machine that contains the buttons and joystick(s) called? Not the side art or marquee, but the part with a simple design that fits around the buttons. Thanks!

Hello, I recently inherited an Upright Asteroids arcade game. The kind found in the old arcades. The game appears to operate but there is no video output. I've been reading around and it seems one of the first things is to replace all (or most?) of the electrolytic capacitors. I was able to find the Real Bob Roberts site that offers re-cap kits. There are several cap kits (http://www.therealbobroberts.net/caps.html) including one specifically for the Asteroids game. Questions: 1) Is the Asteroids re-cap kit all the I will need? 2) Is anyone familiar with this particular video issue? I'm an embedded engineer and quite familiar with circuits and etc. Although, I am entirely unfamiliar with the likely failure modes of this machine, and would be grateful for insight from folks experienced repairing the Asteroids arcade game. The model number is 215 XX. Kindly, Graham

Earlier today I uploaded a video talking about and ranking 19 SNES shooters (shmups) released in the United States. What are your favorites on the system? If you have played all of them, how would you rank them? Video: https://youtu.be/Fl9Y13XR3cM

Will MAME play these or is there an emulator that supports these? Can I find ROM's online anywhere? http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-alternate-universe-of-soviet-arcade-games

I thought I would start a thread featuring games that are actual classics of the arcade, but are actually pains in the butt to keep working. The one that currently comes to mind for me is Pole Position. An excellent race game and one we have all played sometime over the years. It's a true arcade classic, but I have heard so many horror stories about trying to keep them alive and working. Burnt connectors, bad boards, heat fried chips, the list goes on. So, what is the classic arcade game or games that you can think of that are pains or nightmares to keep working?

Recently, I bought a Ms. Pac-Man Coleco Tabletop game from a garage sale (and for only $10!) I put new batteries in and it worked great. But the next morning, I turned it on and chose 1 player game, however it started the 2 player game. Also, moving the joystick down during gameplay will make you move one frame to the left, the same thing happens when you press move it left (for both players). Moving it up and right will move you normally in those directions. If anyone knows what could be causing this strange problem and tell how to fix it, that would be great.

I need to know arcade game title where you shoot aliens or bugs that their eyes are vulnerable. In early stage, aliens or bugs' eye is very large. In later stages, aliens or bugs' eye is much smaller and harder to be destroyed. I believe year for manufacturing this game is in 1982 to 1986.

Hey!! I decided to share a piece of my childhood with all of you. As any of you know or may not know. I'm from Seattle, WA. In Tacoma. Just 25-30 miles south of Seattle there was an awesome retro arcade that opened at the B&I ammusements back in 1978. Called Mikey's Funland. It was a huge retro arcade joint a lower level and an upper level. About 125 total arcade games, skeeball, billiards, foosball, a giant carousel, and mini golf. I first went there on my 6th birthday back in 1987. It was heaven. Went there nonstop draining my allowance money til we left in 1994. Sadly the arcade closed down in July 2013. Had such amazing memories there and wanted to post a few videos of what it looked like.

Sorry if you've heard about this already but I've not noticed any posts about it, but there will be a new film out this year based around early 80's arcade characters. The name of the film is "Pixels" and a wikipedia entry is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixels_%282015_film%29 The trailer is here: And is loosely based on this short animated film from 2010 which was pretty great at the time (and still is)...
