  1. You've probably seen a few interviews with Eugene here and there over the years, or some of you have interviewed him, but I will be doing a live stream interview with him on Monday around 9:35 AM PST/12:35 PM EST. I'm not sure if he's done a live stream before; If not, then this will be the first. Before that starts, I'll premiere a Raw Thrills product showcase, then when that finishes the stream will begin, and we'll talk about the pandemic and it affecting both his company and arcades, game design, what they're working on at RT next, and whatever else he might like to discuss that comes up from the chat stream.   2. MAME 0.225 Whether it’s the Autumn harvest moon, or the ornamental plum blossoms are blowing in the Spring breeze, it’s time for something special: MAME 0.225 is out today! We’ve got some big updates that benefit everyone! First of all, MAME’s sound output system has been overhauled, with better sample rate conversion and mixing. This makes pretty much everything sound sweeter, but on top of that, the Votrax SC-01 speech synthesiser has been tuned up. Does anyone here speak Q*Bertese? SC-01 speech has been added to the Apple II Mockingboard card, too. While we’re talking about Apple II cards, Rhett Aultman has ported the CS8900A Crystal LAN Ethernet controller from VICE, allowing MAME to emulate the a2RetroSystems Uthernet card. Other across-the-board enhancements include more artwork system features (you’ll start to see this show up in external artwork soon), an option to reduce repeated warnings about imperfectly emulated features, and several internal improvements to make development simpler. Significant newly emulated system features include the Philips P2000T’s cassette drive from Erwin Jansen, the Acorn BBC Micro Hybrid Music 4000 Keyboard, internal boot ROM support for the WonderSwan hand-helds, and initial support for the NS32000 CPU. Newly emulated systems include several TV games from MSI based on arcade titles, a couple of Senario Double Dance Mania titles, Sun Mixing’s elusive Super Bubble Bobble, a location test version of Battle Garegga, a couple more versions of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and three more Street Fighter II': Champion Edition bootlegs. Some of the immediately noticeable fixes this month include 15-bit graphics mode refinements for FM Towns from r09, gaps in zoomed sprites on Data East MLC and Seta 2 fixed by cam900, Galaga LED outputs lost during refactoring restored, and clickable artwork remaining clickable when rotated.   3. Greetings Atari Agers - I figured this would be the best place to start with my conundrum. Tempest, in the classic arcade format, always was my all-time favorite video game. Recently, I was showing videos of it to my kids and explaining how awesome it was to play, and the battles my friend and I had on the local 7-Eleven's machine. Many years ago another friend of mine actually assembled a controller for me...spinner and all...and downloaded the emulator so that I could play Tempest on a laptop. The gameplay was absolutely just like the original, and it was the equivalent of owning a machine. I doubt, though, that it was legal. So I'm posing the question to all of you, because I'm guessing you would know. I would like to be able to play the classic Tempest in my home, and I would like to know how I can get a proper control with the spinner. As Tempest fans know, you HAVE to have a good spinner to play it. I also don't want to do anything questionable from a legal standpoint, like downloading the game from an illegal site. I don't mind paying for anything I need for this, within reason. I've seen the version that is (finally) available for the 5200, and I do own a 5200 so that might be okay, but if I can't use a spinner control I'll pass on that. Not a fan of trackballs. So...can anyone point me in the right direction? Forgive me if it's been answered elsewhere. Thanks!! Best, Kurt

  5. Back in 2015, I was granted permission to access the property of an old mini-golf fun center that had been sitting abandoned for nearly three years at that point in time. The fun center had operated from 1992 - 2012, when the owners defaulted on taxes and the place shut down for good. For my photography class final I decided to do an urban exploration piece, and I was EXTREMELY lucky to walk into the vacant relic of one of my favorite childhood places. Upon walking in, I was shocked to see that there were three games left, pushed into a corner of the game room. One of which was a Ms. Pac-Man machine, which I played time and again whenever I visited. However, I always wondered why it looked so...different. The cabinet, for one, is MASSIVE. The screen, from what I can recall, was far bigger than the arcade original, though it was still a vertical upright monitor. This game also possessed the speed chip, which if my memory is correct, was not added until sometime between my childhood and teenage years. I recall the game running at normal speed when I was a kid, though I could be wrong. But the cabinet itself has always intrigued me. Despite having "MIDWAY" plastered across the top above the screen, I wondered if this cabinet was actually a super-rare bootleg of sorts. I do know the control panel art is original Pac-Man art from a company called Willis (see below) So I have several theories on what this actual machine might be: 1. A official re-release by Midway in the 1990s, using leftover cabinets from other games they produced in an effort to liquidate unsold boards. 2. The cabinet itself is one where the owners can easily switch out arcade boards to classic games they have lying around, just to swap out a game from time to time and keeps their inventory fresh-ish, possibly made by Midway in the 90s. 3. The entire thing, board included, IS a bootleg game, though this wouldn't make much sense as the company that made it would have certainly been sued by Midway for using their logo in stickers. Does anyone else have any ideas? I'd love to hear them, and if anyone else has seen something like this out in the wild before. Before I left, I stuck a note with my contact information to whoever purchased the property in order to buy the game from them if they choose to sell it.

  8. Merry Christmas! This game is loosely based on a very old arcade game called Shark Jaws. Released by Atari under the name of Horror Games, originally released in 1975. I added stuff to it, thus the + You are a diver that is trying to catch fish and avoid everything else. There is one life. If you die, you start over. After you catch 10 fish, a new level appears. Avoid the shark. Avoid the walls, they tear up your wet suit. Keep an eye on your oxygen, if it runs out, you die. To replenish your oxygen, go to the top, but avoid all walls. There will be a warning when you get low on oxygen. Avoid the Coral tree. Avoid the mad puffer fish. At a later stage a killer sub will show up, avoid it. If you find bugs, please post here. I did this pretty quick so there should be some. I realize the shark is not pixel perfect on collisions. Your advantage If you die, the fish will be easier to catch (for a while), it's random. Eugene Jarvis - Arcade Legend - Podcast Interview - Creator of Robotron: 2084, Defender & Smash TV This is probably my favourite interview to date as I have a long and in-depth chat with arcade, Atari and Williams legend Eugene Jarvis. Eugene shares some great stories of working at Atari, what it was like working with Nolan Bushnell, creating Defender and Stargate. He also talks what inspired him to make Robotron: 2084, Smash T.V. and loads more. He also looks at his current work at Raw Thrills where he keeping arcades alive with amazing innovations. He also talks about his views on the Jeff Minter's Defender 2000 on the Jaguar. Eugene also spends a bit of time discussing his work on pinball machines and the earlier arcade machines. It is completely licensed through Atari, which allows us to use all the original art as well as the original ROM. We posted on the Replicade thread, but we also wanted to create our own. After experimenting for weeks I have found a way to get lag-free control on the 5200 digital games as well as a few of the Trakball titles with the X-arcade Tankstick and my custom Tron 80's Arcade Multicontroller (which includes a spinner). This is done with daisy-chained adapters/cables and all the components are currently in production, so it's possible for anyone to get this set up. In the presentation I show a number of 5200 games being played in ways you've not seen them played before on the 5200 including Pac-Man, Beamrider, Choplifter, Dreadnaught Factor, Meteorites, Star Trek, and Zone Ranger.   14. MAME 0.220 In a world of uncertainty, perhaps you can derive a little comfort from MAME 0.220, our delayed release for the March development cycle. This month has seen fixes for some old bugs in Final Star Force, Ribbit! and Night Slashers, emulation of Crab Grab (the other Game & Watch title with a colour overlay), the acquisition of Solite Spirits (an early version of what became 1945k III), and preliminary work on the Naruto TV game running on the XaviX 2 platform. There are some big software list updates this month, including a lot of Apple II software aimed at North Dakota schools, and the latest VGM music packs. Speaking of which, the VGM player can now show pretty visualisations while you listen. Newly supported peripherals include the Baby Blue II CPU Plus card for PC compatibles, serial and CP/M modules for the HP 85 and HP 86, more sound and disk expansions for the TI-99 family, the CoCo PSG cartridge, and a variety of 8-bit Acorn expansions. We’ve added ROM dumps for a lot of synthesisers in this release, and while most of them are not working yet, they’re there to tinker with if you’re interested.   15. I much prefer battling robots to battling viruses, so I've been inside spending a lot of time on Berzerk in the last few weeks. I wrote up an animated strategy guide and attempted to backwards engineer the AI. So tell me about your experiences with the game. Are the ports any good? And why doesn't Evil Otto have his own game yet?
  16. MAME 0.219 MAME 0.219 arrives today, just in time for the end of February! This month we’ve got another piece of Nintendo Game & Watch history – Pinball – as well as a quite a few TV games, including Dream Life Superstar, Designer’s World, Jenna Jameson’s Strip Poker, and Champiyon Pinball. The previously-added Care Bears and Piglet’s Special Day TV games are now working, as well as the big-endian version of the MIPS Magnum R4000. As always, the TV games vary enormously in quality, from enjoyable titles, to low-effort games based on licensed intellectual properties, to horrible bootlegs using blatantly copied assets. If music/rhythm misery is your thing, there’s even a particularly bad dance mat game in there. On the arcade side, there are fixes for a minor but long-standing graphical issue in Capcom’s genre-defining 1942, and also a fairly significant graphical regression in Seibu Kaihatsu’s Raiden Fighters. Speaking of Seibu Kaihatsu, our very own Angelo Salese significantly improved the experience in Good E-Jan, and speaking of graphics fixes, cam900 fixed some corner cases in Data East’s innovative, but little-known, shoot-’em-up Boogie Wings. Software list additions include the Commodore 64 INPUT 64 collection (courtesy of FakeShemp) and the Spanish ZX Spectrum Load’N’Run collection (added by ICEknight). New preliminary CPU cores and disassemblers include IBM ROMP, the NEC 78K family, Samsung KS0164 and SSD Corp’s Xavix 2.   17. So I decided to build myself an arcade authentic, full-featured twin-stick arcade controller for the 5200...to properly enjoy the 5200 ports of Space Dungeon and Robotron: 2084. Lots of people have made Robotron: 2084 themed controllers, I've even built one for the 8-Bit/7800, so I figured I'd break the mold and build one themed for the 5200 exclusive arcade port of Space Dungeon. So unveiling my Space Dungeon Edition - VVG Experience Controller: Built into a beefed-up Hammond Mfg 20" x 11.25" aluminum enclosure and featuring: (2) iL EuroJoystick, 8-way joysticks w/ round restrictors (2) iL SST threaded top joystick shafts (2) Groovy Game Gear Hard Candy ball knobs (white) (2) Groovy Game Gear Classx push-buttons, w/ True-Leaf Pro leaf-swtiches (1) Grayhill 16 tactile button keypad, w/ custom button legends (6/6) Potentiometers, allowing for full adjustment of each joystick's maximum left, center, maximum right & maximum up, center, and maximum down resistance values for maximum game and console compatibility Custom CPO artwork based on the original arcade cabinet Custom 8' dual controller cord, cable assembly And obviously as the P1/P2 start buttons aren't required for Space Dungeon, they are wired as the 2 5200 fire buttons used in conjunction with the left joystick, thus giving this controller compatibility with the vast majority of the 5200 game library. The only games not playable are the few games that require "analog positioning", like Kaboom!, Super Breakout, Pole Position, Missile Command and a couple of others. Enjoy!
  18. MAME 0.218 It’s time for MAME 0.218, the first MAME release of 2020! We’ve added a couple of very interesting alternate versions of systems this month. One is a location test version of NMK’s GunNail, with different stage order, wider player shot patterns, a larger player hitbox, and lots of other differences from the final release. The other is The Last Apostle Puppetshow, an incredibly rare export version of Home Data’s Reikai Doushi. Also significant is a newer version Valadon Automation’s Super Bagman. There’s been enough progress made on Konami’s medal games for a number of them to be considered working, including Buttobi Striker, Dam Dam Boy, Korokoro Pensuke, Shuriken Boy and Yu-Gi-Oh Monster Capsule. Don’t expect too much in terms of gameplay though — they’re essentially gambling games for children. There are several major computer emulation advances in this release, in completely different areas. Possibly most exciting is the ability to install and run Windows NT on the MIPS Magnum R4000 “Jazz” workstation, with working networking. With the assistance of Ash Wolf, MAME now emulates the Psion Series 5mx PDA. Psion’s EPOC32 operating system is the direct ancestor of the Symbian operating system, that powered a generation of smartphones. IDE and SCSI hard disk support for Acorn 8-bit systems has been added, the latter being one of the components of the BBC Domesday Project system. In PC emulation, Windows 3.1 is now usable with S3 ViRGE accelerated 2D video drivers. F.Ulivi has contributed microcode-level emulation of the iSBC-202 floppy controller for the Intel Intellec MDS-II system, adding 8" floppy disk support. Of course there are plenty of other improvements and additions, including re-dumps of all the incorrectly dumped GameKing cartridges, disassemblers for PACE, WE32100 and “RipFire” 88000, better Geneve 9640 emulation, and plenty of working software list additions. You can get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page (note that 32-bit Windows binaries and “zip-in-zip” source code are no longer supplied).
  19. Here's a new DIY video on making a Tron arcade stick with Spinner and Trackball. At the end is gameplay showing it in action playing Centipede, Millipede, Battlezone, Tempest, and Typhoon 2001. Turned out to be a really fun project... and the results are really nice to look at.
  20. It is time to show you a better video of “Anthropomorphic Force” since an older/obsolete video has seen the light, and also to open a thread in case you folks have some questions about it. This game is a work in progress. Some aspects might change/improve. There might be misspellings or other errors that will be corrected on the final version. This game does not require any additional hardware. It works on any Intellivision. It does use Intellivoice to play custom samples if it’s available (thank you to Joe Zbiciak for making this possible!) The video does not show how smooth the game really works and looks on a real Intellivision due to video conversion and emulator, vsync problems. The game works smoothly at 60 fps. I wish to stress that it is very important to receive your support on our previous games: Ninja Odyssey and TNT Cowboy. I am running very low on funds and I might have to look for greener pastures very shortly (before the CIB versions of those games are availabe).   21. MAME 0.216 With the end of November in sight, it’s time to check out MAME 0.216! We’ve addressed the reported issues with last month’s bgfx update, and made a whole lot of little improvements to MAME’s internal user interface. In particular, setting up controls should be easier, and several issues affecting macOS users with non-English number format settings have been fixed. Some of the issues caused bad settings to be written to INI files. If you still don’t see the filter list panel on the system selection menu, try removing the ui.ini file. This month, we’re able to present two unreleased 1970s prototypes from Italian developer Model Racing: their internal code names are Cane and Orbite. With the assistance of former Model Racing employees, the source code was extracted from the original disks. These games are incomplete, but they provide a unique look into early CPU-based arcade development. Game & Watch titles continue to be emulated, with the addition of Mario The Juggler, and the panorama screen Mickey Mouse and Donkey Kong Circus games in this release. This release brings GameKing emulation to MAME. The system-on-a-chip used in this low-cost, low-resolution hand-held console from the early 2000s has been identified and emulated. Games for the colour-screen GameKing III are also playable. Acorn BBC Micro emulation has been re-worked to support internal expansion boards, and a number of additional peripherals are now available. ZX Spectrum emulation has been enhanced with better open bus read behaviour and support for two Miles Gordon Technology peripherals. Of course, these are just the highlights.   22. MAME 0.215 A wild MAME 0.215 appears! Yes, another month has gone by, and it’s time to check out what’s new. On the arcade side, Taito’s incredibly rare 4-screen top-down racer Super Dead Heat is now playable! Joining its ranks are other rarities, such as the European release of Capcom‘s 19XX: The War Against Destiny, and a bootleg of Jaleco’s P-47 – The Freedom Fighter using a different sound system. We’ve got three newly supported Game & Watch titles: Lion, Manhole, and Spitball Sparky, as well as the crystal screen version of Super Mario Bros. Two new JAKKS Pacific TV games, Capcom 3-in-1 and Disney Princesses, have also been added. Other improvements include several more protection microcontrollers dumped and emulated, the NCR Decision Mate V working (now including hard disk controllers), graphics fixes for the 68k-based SNK and Alpha Denshi games, and some graphical updates to the Super A'Can driver. We’ve updated bgfx, adding preliminary Vulkan support. There are some issues we’re aware of, so if you run into issues, check our GitHub issues page to see if it’s already known, and report it if it isn’t. We’ve also improved support for building and running on Linux systems without X11. Killer Clowns is an electrifying combination of the arcade classic: Berzerk, and the cult classic film: Killer Klowns From Outer Space. With touches of elements from some of our favorite games like Dead Space and Super Smash TV, Killer Clowns is a tough-as-nails arcade experience from outta this world. Set in the distant future, Earth struggles for survival due to a shortage of resources. The Planetary Resource Importation Corporation vows to find a future for mankind. Hoping to discover planets rich with useful resources the Andromeda and its crew set to the stars. But rather than salvation, they found a circus from hell. Gameplay in Killer Clowns is very similar to Berzerk but with touches of more modern mechanics and ideas inspired by various other favorite retro games of ours. Players must carefully navigate their Cosmonaut through the labyrinth of a space station infested with mutated killer clowns to escape their imminent demise. As if that wasn't enough, the stations security system has been tripped and all of the walls have become electrified! Players will need to divert focus to both the positioning of their Cosmonaut and of the various bozos lurking around the corner. All you have to rely on is your wits and trusty blaster. Killer Clowns is sort of a passion project of ours. The Idea came to be when we were about 8 years old, my brother and I were talking with our cousin Ronald about the movie Killer Klowns from outer space when Ron mentioned how cool of a game that movie could make, and we spent a good portion of our day coming up with what we thought were awesome game designs. Little to say the game is a tad different than our original (8 year old) brainchild. But we like to think it turned out much better than we could have ever imagined. Side note: We disabled the fog you see in the trailer due to popular demand.
