  1. Over on the Atari 8 bit forums, they are having a contest where they challenge programmers to "write a game in ten lines of basic"! http://atariage.com/forums/topic/234337-basic-ten-liners-contest-2015/?hl=+basic%20+contest I wondered if I it was possible to write an IntyBasic Game in 10 lines.... Only one way to find out! So I gave it a try.... The result is snake! (Click to animate) Here is the whole program: start: cls : for i = 0 to 19 : poke $200+i,(56*+1 : poke $200 + (20 * 11) + i,(56 * +1 : if i < 11 then poke $200+(20 * i),(56 * +1 : poke $213 + (20 * i) , (56 * + 1 ' line 1 next i : food = 0 : score = 0 ' line 2 dim snake(180) ' line 3 for i = 0 to 179 : snake(i) = 0 : next i : snake(0) = 130 : snake(1) = 131 : slen = 1 : #sdir = 1 : poke $200 + 130,(56 * + 2 : poke $200 + 131, (56 * + 2 ' line 4 loop: wait ' line 5 if food = 0 then food = RAND : if (food > 240) OR (peek($200 + food) <> 0) then food = 0 else poke $200+food,(38 * + 5 ' line 6 if cont1.left then #sdir = -1 else if cont1.right then #sdir = 1 else if cont1.up then #sdir = -20 else if cont1.down then #sdir = 20 ' line 7 if (frame AND $0f) = 0 then #adrs = snake(slen) + #sdir + $200 : if (peek(#adrs) AND $07f8) = (56 * then goto game_over else poke #adrs,(56 * + 2 : if #adrs = (food + $200) then slen = slen + 1 : snake(slen) = #adrs : food = 0 : score = score + 1 else poke $200 + snake(0),0 : for I = 0 to slen : snake(i) = snake(i+1) : next i : snake(slen) = #adrs ' line 8 goto loop ' line 9 game_over: print at 25, "game over" : print at 44, "score = " : print <3> score : wait : if cont2.key = 12 then goto game_over else goto start' line 10 Here is a longer, more readable version (essentially the same program spread over more lines with some comments...) rem snake program rem copyright 2015 rem Catsfolly CONST bluex = (56 * + 1 CONST redx = (56 * + 2 CONST greenf = (38 * + 5 CONST backtab = $200 dim snake(180) ' snake data (offset from start of backtab for each snake piece start: cls ' clear the screen for i = 0 to 19 poke backtab+i,bluex ' draw the top border poke backtab + (20 * 11) + i,bluex ' draw the bottom border if i < 11 then poke backtab+(20 * i),bluex : poke backtab + 19 + (20 * i) , bluex ' top and bottom borders next i food = 0 ' food position. 0 means no food on screen score = 0 ' score rem init snake for i = 0 to 179 : snake(i) = 0 : next i ' clear offsets (probably not necessary…) snake(0) = 130 : snake(1) = 131 ' put first 2 segments in the center of the screen slen = 1 ' there are two segments, number 0 and 1 #sdir = 1 ' direction is "1" (add one to the current address to get to the next square) poke backtab + 130,redx ' draw the first two segments poke backtab + 131, redx loop: wait rem if there is no food then try a random number. If the random number < 240 and the location at backtab rem + the number is blank, then draw the food there and set food to the random number if food = 0 then food = RAND : if (food > 240) OR (peek(backtab + food) <> 0) then food = 0 else poke backtab+food,greenF rem set the direction variable based on the controls (uses exact directions, so probably unplayable with a rem real intelliision controller if cont1.left then #sdir = -1 else if cont1.right then #sdir = 1 else if cont1.up then #sdir = -20 else if cont1.down then #sdir = 20 if (frame AND $0f) <> 0 then goto loop ' slow down the action #adrs = snake(slen) + #sdir + backtab ' get the address of the next square for the snake if (peek(#adrs) AND $07f8) = (56 * then goto game_over ' if its an x, goto game over poke #adrs, redx ' put an x at the new square rem if the new square is where the food was, make the snake longer, set food to zero, and inc the score rem otherwise clear the first square of the snake, and shift the addresses down in the array if #adrs = (food + backtab) then slen = slen + 1 : snake(slen) = #adrs : food = 0 : score = score + 1 else poke backtab + snake(0),0 : for I = 0 to slen : snake(i) = snake(i+1) : next i : snake(slen) = #adrs goto loop game_over: print at 25, "game over" print at 44, "score = " print <3> score : wait if cont2.key = 12 then goto game_over else goto start The game checks for exact up, down, left, and right values on the controls, so it might be difficult to play on real hardware. Here are the files: snake.bas snake_readable.bas snake.rom How about you? Why not take a break from your mega-epic-kroztastic-supergame project, and write a game 10 lines of basic? Catsfolly
  2. Hello all, I've recently completed a series of videos that compare the BASIC interpreter performance of a variety of 8-bit vintage computers. I use prime number generation as the test bed. I think folks in this forum will be pleasantly surprised by the results! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOoCXsFhz0tlHCinV0rm64PQifIOApqdp Keep it vintage, -Rusty
  3. I've been interested in video art for the Bally Arcade/Astrocade for the last year or two. I doubt anything like this existed for the Intellivision back in the 1980s, but does any video art exist for the Intellivision today? Here's an example of video art for the Astrocade that I uploaded today: Here are a few examples of video art for the astrocade that I've uploaded to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJdViXGk3iI&list=PLADcQ67H2uU0R8npUnSmT6X8Ad6mKh_3o This sort of art can be created relatively easily on the astrocade because it has a bit-mapped screen and BASIC was available on cartridge. Could intyBASIC be used to make video art like these examples? Adam
  4. Ran accross this interesting article in TIME about the creation of BASIC and it's impact: http://time.com/69316/basic/ Lots of fascinating stuff, the reaction from contemporary professionals accusing BASIC of mutilating minds is particularly interesting, equally so the response from the inventor of the language. This was the BASIC Allen, Gates and Woz learned in High School in it's original form on Teletype time sharing systems; didn't seem to mutiliate their minds rather a catalyst for creativity
  5. Anyone know anything about this program. seems to be a lot like 'the missing link'. I got a copy (from where??) but it only has a little bit of info on it. attached is the .dsk in cf7 format readable by TIdir. XBASIC2.zip
  6. What do you guys think are some of the best games made in the last few years that were done in 100% (or nearly 100%) BASIC? Any version of BASIC for the TI. Compiled BASIC OK. By "best games" I mean the ones you enjoy playing the most and/or show off impressive features.
  7. Hello guys, here my last try to create a pure TI Basic game: ESCAPE! Run, shot the skulls, collect the seeds avoid the bars from the ceiling, fight versus the time! It's a simple game and I hope it's not boring, now I will start definitively to develop games in XBasic and compile them! Hope you have fun! escape.zip
  8. Hi I am trying to figure out a short and simple way to read the keyboard in plain Atari BASIC with no need to have the ATASCII code. I just need to detect if some keys are detected. In a loop I do ... 1300 S=PEEK(764) 1400 if s<>255 THEN ... 1500 POKE 764,255 ... This sort of works but it is not detecting all key-presses... Is there a better solution?
  9. I am coding a 10-liner in Atari BASIC but I cannot copy paste small characters/inverse/small inverse characters onto Altirra or any other emulator. What should I use to edit a BASIC program on the PC in a way that can be transferred on to an emulator? I have tried Memo Pad but its files cannot be opened by Altirra or I don't know how to open them. Altirra cannot even import simple plain small letters by copy/paste without converting them into capital letters.
  10. Hi Atarians, I'm working through learning BASIC and have stumbled. How can you iterate something that is already iterating. Say I have this: 10 X=1 15 FOR T = 1 TO 5 20 PRINT X 25 X=X+1 30 NEXT T RUN 1 2 3 4 5 and I want to iterate it so I get this the next time: 6 7 8 9 10 but not with a GOTO. Nested maybe? Or something more elegant? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. KB
  11. Hi, I'm having issues with implementing arrays in 7800Basic, the online manual appears to have an example that makes no sense to me, it doesn't show how to declare an Array? I assume to declare its like my example below? dim enemyX[0] = var1 dim enemyX[1] = var2 dim enemyX[2] = var3 this means I can loop through them like this? for temp1 = 0 to 2 if enemyX[temp1] >160 then enemyX[temp1] = 0 next Also...getting the _length of data appears to be unclear to me, I get an error about it been before the data statement or something...
  12. getting into Color Computer programming. a little BASIC program called Awari. other than the odd editor I found I like the Coco2. game on my Aariage blog. http://atariage.com/forums/blog/528/entry-15384-1st-color-computer-game-awari-updated-with-software-attached/
  13. Hi Atarians, I am self teaching BASIC and don't know where to go from here. If I have an array of 100 random integers, and I want to subtract each subscripted value from the one preceding it. 10 DIM X(100) 20 FOR A=1 TO 100 30 X(A)=INT(10*RND(1))+1 ? 50 PRINT? 60 NEXT A goal: X(100)-X(99) print result X(99)-x(98) print result etc. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. KB
  14. Hi all. I'm about to release officially IntyBASIC v1.4.0 with new features, corrections and enhancements. But before doing it "officially" I need your help to check if your current programs compile with this new version of compiler and post here with your OK. I've been careful but I'm trying not to release version after version because small bugs Thanks! Edit: for some reason I couldn't upload the ZIP here, so find it here https://github.com/nanochess/IntyBASIC/releases/tag/1.4.0 o Tracker allows playing 8 channels of music (using ECS PSG) o Now detects failure of flow control when using GOTO to jump wrongly between procedures. o Detects wrong flow of control (GOTO to PROCEDURE or GOSUB to non-PROCEDURE) o Name mangling for assembler now uses original names, easing assembler interface. o Support for local labels (using period character before a label, uses last global label as prefix) o Added MUSIC GOSUB, MUSIC RETURN, MUSIC VOLUME and MUSIC SPEED. o Added contrib/accel.bas it shows how to move sprites by fractions of pixel (contributed by intvnut) o VOICE INIT now "shuts up" the Intellivision (contributed by intvnut) and the initializatin is done in automatic form at start of program. o FLASH INIT SIZE to choose Flash memory size. o Allows constants in DATA PACKED. o Added ON expr FAST to avoid two instructions. o Generates warnings for AND/OR/XOR and small operators non-parenthesized. o Now direct CONT1, CONT2, CONT3 and CONT4 generate 8-bit results. o Solved bug where IF CONT.B0 THEN wouldn't work, also ABS and SGN. o Compatibility with Tutorvision consoles.
  15. Hello, Way back in the wild late 70s and early 80s, I never did get my hands on a pair of Keypad Controllers to try out the Basic Programming cartridge. For some reason, and despite the cartridge's obvious limitations, I would still like to try it out, if for anything historical curiosity. Is it possible to use Basic Programming on an emulator without Keypad Controllers? If not, would I need two 2600-daptors to accommodate the Keypad Controllers to USB? I'm hoping to try Basic Programming with as little acquisition as possible, but I know fate sometimes deals cruel hands. Thank you!
  16. A question on timing of sprite movement in 7800Basic, I traditionally use decimal for controlling speed. 7800Basic supports this, but is it better to use a frame counter to trigger a move? Recommendations welcome! Thanks. Speed = 0.2 X = X + Speed
  17. little while back I posted a reconsideration of Atari MS BASIC http://atariage.com/forums/topic/249007-reconsidering-ms-basic/ I not long after that started on an Uno game in BASIC. worked on it on and off for while but got series a couple weeks ago. So here it is, Uno programmed in MS BASIC. MS_BASIC_27&uno.ATR attached is a .dsk with a homebrew version of MS BASIC on disk called MS BASIC 2.7. The MS BASIC self boots then boots the Uno game automatically. the Uno game is simple as I just wanted to have a demonstrator for MS BASIC. You play against 3 computer opponents. the game is in graphics 1 with the a little P/M graphics for the Discard card. to play: bottom 4 lines are the letters for your cards segregated by color; red, yellow, green and blue. last line is Spl which is the change color cards. the types of cards beside the colors are 0-9 D=draw 2, S=skip and R=reverse. under Spl are C=change color and F=draw 4. when the human plays you choose Sort, Play and Take. Sort just sorts your cards. Take will take a card from the pile. Play will play 1 of your cards. in Play you type the card you want to play by following the prompts. the game plays a standard game of Uno except; Uno call is automatic and has 1 in 9 chance of 'forgetting to call' penalty which is also automatic. when you Take a card you can not play it even if the card is playable till the next round. on programming in MS BASIC: I found MS BASIC to very capable. lots of additional commands compared to Atari BASIC.It's a fast BASIC. when using integers its very fast. It's also more standard than Atari BASIC and can more easily translate from other computers. I actually started this program on a TI-99 then transferred it to Atari MS BASIC fairly easily. The only real downside to MS BASIC is you only have 21k available. but in this program it really wasn't an issue. I had about 7k left when all done. I'm going to keep programming in MS BASIC and will post other stuff here from time to time. for now enjoy the game.
  18. Has anyone created a sound effect library for use in our 7800 Basic projects?
  19. Note: a new version is available over this post. Hi all As a new-year present, I released a new version of FastBasic. It's only a minor bugfix release from last one: - Fixes a bug with floating-point comparisons - Adds more usage information to the cross-compiler. - Fixes display corruption in the editor. - Allows comments after any statement. As always, the full source is over github, and you can download the release at https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/releases/full manual at https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/blob/master/manual.md and sample programs are included in the ATR or in the source at https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/tree/master/samples/int and https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/tree/master/samples/fp Over github I included the cross-compiler for Linux, Windows and macOS, but I only tested the Linux and Windows ones. For usage instructions of the cross-compiler, see at https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/blob/master/compiler/USAGE.md fastbasic-r2.atr

  21. Last week, Eric dug deep in his attic and found boxes of Atari stuff that has been hidden away for 30 years! Included were hundreds of pages of hand-written A/W/A game notes, more correspondence with Atari 8-bit magazines, and some 5 1/4" floppies that were still usable after all these years. One of the disks was really warped and unreadable, but Eric had to perform disk surgery to extract the media from within the protective disk cover and insert it into another disk that wasn't quite so warped. We had to wait for a serial to USB cable to arrive so we could use our old SIO2PC to dump the games. I have updated the document covering the Anschuetz/Weisgerber/Anschuetz 1980's game development. I have added a change history so you can see what new sections have been added. There is quite a bit of new stuff, some related to the newly discovered games we uncovered in the attic boxes. I have also attached a separate game development notes document that has scans of hundreds of pages of game development notes, code, and bit-mapped graphics. These are organized by game so you can compare the development notes to how the games turned out in the other document. I have also attached a zip file with 3 ATR self-booting BASIC disks with 3 games that were found on Side B of some of the 30 year-old-disks. These games are Phoenix, Piracy, and Ramses' Revenge. Ramses' Revenge is really worth taking a look at. It takes a minute to initialize, and is meant for two players, but it can also be played with one player (you'll just always win!). These three games were some of the very first that we wrote within a couple months after getting our Atari 400 and teaching ourselves BASIC in 1982. Phoenix was literally our first game and was written within a couple weeks of getting our computer while trying to learn to program. Hopefully you'll enjoy taking a look at this peek back into the history of Atari BASIC game development from the 1980's! 22. This is fairly simple I just can't seem to get a good fix on it. I have a Atari BASIC (actually TBXL) program where you move the stick then choose a menu option by pressing the trigger. then I jump to another menu option that also presses the trigger for confirmation. Problem is the 1st trigger press will carry over to the 2nd menu if you don't pull off the trigger fast enough. I have tried a timing loop for a short pause but that only mostly work. what i want to do is after the 1st trigger press make the user re-press the trigger before it works again. any ideas? thx, HLO
  23. I came across a channel on YouTube called "Placelogohere." There are currently 126 videos of Astrocade titles, including (mostly, in fact) BASIC games and games/programs that require expansion memory. It looks like someone got the UlltiMulti multicart and a Lil' White Ram and had some fun going through many of the games on that cartridge. These videos were uploaded in September 2017, but hardly anyone has watched these videos. In fact, currently, most videos have less than ten views! None of the videos I watched had any commentary, which is too bad. These videos look pretty good and are worth watching especially if you don't have an Astrocade, because then videos are the only way to view many of these games, since the MAME emulator doesn't support loading tapes. Placelogohere created an Astrocade playlist on his playlist page: https://www.youtube.com/user/placelogohere/playlists To get you started, here are links to some of the more interesting videos: Arcade Golf, by Gambits (Ken Lill). 1983. Blue RAM BASIC, 2000-Baud, Requires Expansion RAM. From ad in "Arcadian" newsletter: For 16k & 32k Blue Ram Basic 1.1 Extended RAM. 1-4 PLAYERS. 1-4 HAND CONTROLS. No bang-bang shoot-em-ups here. Just your choice of 9 or 18 holes of golf!. Each hole is different -- each and every time!! There are trees, a lake, sand traps and an always changing wind! With the wind gusting up to 25mph, your ball can be blown off its course. Try to break par. It isn't as easy as you might think. Music Keyboard, by WaveMakers 1987. Expanded BASIC, 2000-Baud, Extra RAM Required. This is an enhanced version of the AstroBASIC program that was released on Tape 17 in December 1982. Pro Golf, by Henry Sopko. 1988. 2000 baud, Blue RAM BASIC (+16K). This game was converted into a BASICart. Ken Lill's instruction book for the UltiMulti Cartridge has these brief instructions for the game: This is similar to the "Links" games. The "Swing" power/slice box is controlled by to trigger. Let go at just the right time to get the maximum shot. The "right" time is when the moving box is in line with the line on the right side. Everything else is pretty much easy to figure out. Flying Ace 82, by WaveMakers 1982 AstroBASIC FLYING ACE is for 1 to 4 players. Try to gun down the enemy before your time runs out. Get the "feel" of flying a fighter plane. At first everything seems backwards until you get the hang of it, then you'll become a FLYING ACE. Avalanche!, by Steve Walters Tape 821, April 1982 AstroBASIC Paul Thacker comments, "It's kind of like a strategy Pachinko game--pretty unique. [...] Yes, I definitely interpreted it as lowest score wins." We played Avalanche! during season 1, round 7 of the Astrocade High Score along with Bally Pin (Pinball): http://atariage.com/forums/topic/252219-hsc01-round-7-bally-pin-pinball/?hl=%2Bavalanche 1-4 players drop blocks through a system of levers. Depending on the positions of the levers, the blocks will either get stuck or fall to the bottom. After a set number of turns, the player who let the fewest number of blocks fall to the bottom wins. Dungeons of Dracula, by WaveMakers Tape 16, October 1982. A real adventure game with mazes, doors, keys, and 7 different monsters. Can you get all the way to the top room (level 10) in time? Will you trap the terrible two-headed monster or the giant spider or Dracula himself? Find out how you will do when you play Dungeons of Dracula. You are the chain which enters the maze from the left. Your mission is to trap the monster by surrounding him with your chain. You cannot touch anything, including the key, until the monster has been trapped. When you trap the monster, you must grab the key which opens the door on the right to enter the next maze. Time is always running out so you must hurry. As the maze level gets higher it becomes harder to trap the monster in the maze. It may take a smaller box around the monster to trap him. You can go over your own chain to remove it and reposition your trap for the monster. Extra time can be gained by trapping the monster and picking up the key. You cannot go through the door until it is open. You can escape to the previous maze by going out the door on the right. If the monster escapes, you remain at the same level but you lose time and must rebuild your traps. If anyone else finds some videos that they like, then please post direct links to them here. Adam
  24. Hi all, I've been hunting for Peter Goode's rare Aquarius Program Book (mentioned in this old thread) for almost a year, and I finally tracked down an eBay UK seller who was willing to ship it my way. I've now scanned the book and uploaded it to the Internet Archive (and attached it to this thread), so it is rare no longer. I haven't typed in any of the programs yet, so if you do, please share the results here. ========== Nathan metopal.com pre83.com Peter Goode - The Aquarius Program Book (1983).pdf
