New SIDE3 Loader Testing and Development Thread
flashjazzcat posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'm pleased to finally announce the release of the beta version of the new SIDE3 Loader, following a significant re-write which commenced in July 2021. You can download the installer and WIP documentation from the page linked below: https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/side3-beta-loader/ Here's a permalink which always points to the latest version of the loader: https://atari8.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SIDE3-Loader-Beta.zip And the same for the manual: https://atari8.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SIDE3-Loader-Manual.pdf Since this is beta software of steadily increasing complexity, please approach it as you would any beta software: namely, with the expectation that bugs will exist and that certain features may not work predictably or as described. In particular, please back up your SD cards before letting the beta loader loose on them, especially when writing to the card (by creating new files and folders, deleting content, etc). Where multiple cards are available, consider using a cloned SD card until any destructive bugs are ironed out. I won't be held accountable for lost data which wasn't backed up. With that said, the file system drivers are reasonably well tested, and it has been many months since they have mangled a FAT volume when creating new files, etc. A precis of some of the headline features (about half of which are new to this version): Read/write support for up to eight FAT partitions with long filenames 64KB FAT directory buffer allowing the browsing 1,024 files per folder Fast recursive search facility Intuitive context menu system CAR/ROM file loading, ATR mounting, XEX loading Powerful file management tools (recursive file copier, delete, rename, etc) Windows-style cut/copy/paste facilities and keyboard shortcuts PDM audio playback BASIC file loading Built-in FATFMS (an Atari/SpartaDOS read/write FAT DOS workalike with CLI) MEM.SAV facility in DOS Autorun facility Bookmarks/favourites Launcher shortcuts and aliases (with hotkey launching) Disk image creation History (remembers your most recently used XEX, ATR and CAR files) Support for SD cards/FAT partitions of up to 128GB Time/date stamping of new and modified files (via real-time clock) Simultaneous HDD/ATR/CAR emulation Bootable, OS-level disk image and HDD support with U1MB when present Limited ATR support without U1MB Remember the last accessed partition, folder, or file Here's the first of two videos introducing the new features of this loader, as well as giving a basic overview of SIDE3 for those not yet familiar with the hardware: There are still a lot of futher enhancements on the to-do list, and the purpose of this thread is to discuss issues and introduce and discuss new features. Hardware developments are also ongoing, so I expect to be quite busy for the remainder of the year keeping up with that while ironing out any problems in what's already been implemented on the existing hardware. The manual is likewise a work in progress, although the general structure of the document is fully fleshed out. I know the documentation of the DOS 'COPY' command is hopelessly deficient, for example. Writing the documentation over the past few weeks has certainly brought home to me that I've written a new Atari disk operating system along the way, which would have represented a fair bit of work in isolation, let alone as a component of a complete loader re-write, so I feel a little less bad about taking months longer than I hoped to actually release a first beta of this software. I hope you enjoy it, in any case. I feel like I could use a break after this, but I'll nevertheless brace myself for the crash reports.- 143 replies

As I have reported here in the forum regularly, I am currently working on the port of the VCS classic Haunted House. It is not the original code, but the game was 100% reprogrammed with my own code. For this I only used information I learned by playing and watching the VCS original. My goal is to reproduce the original as 1:1 as possible and I hope I succeeded so far. In this first playable beta version you can play the game completely like the original, but only in the first game level. So with visible walls, without locked doors and with 3 enemies. Of course I will continue to work on the program and implement all of the 9 game levels if possible. I would appreciate feedback, especially from those who have already played the game on the VCS. Currently the program only runs on PAL machines due to a very long VBI routine. In the final version it will also run under NTSC. The game is started with START (even during an already started round). HauntedHouse_Beta_0_1.atr Manual-Short.txt

I've been developing UT2600 (Unreal Tournament for the Atari 2600) on and off for a couple of years now. Other things kept me from finishing the game. It's done, I think... What I really need is a lot of testing. The thing is: this is a 2 player game. If you are willing to help out (and have a friend to join you), I cannot promise to compensate you. But you will be mentioned on the website and in the manual, if UT2600 ever gets a physical release obviously. I will provide you with the latest binary and documentation and any further instructions you may need.

Presenting, the latest entry in the most exciting genre for your Atari 2600.. solitaire card games.. Cribbage Squares Solitaire! I've been posting about it in the Atari 2600 Programming forum but figured I'd let people over here know. Link to the other thread: Calling this a Beta release, hope you'll check it out and definitely report any bugs you find. Summary rules: You're placing cards in a 4 x 4 grid, to form 8 cribbage hands horizontally and vertically. There's a 17th "starter" space on the fifth row, this card is shared among each of the 8 hands formed by the grid. Try to place the cards to score as many points as possible. Cribbage hands score: 2 points for every combination of cards that adds up to 15. (Aces are 1, face cards are 10, all other cards are face value) 2 points for every pair. (This means three of a kind is 6 points, because there are three distinct "pairs"; similarly 4-of-a-kind is 12 points) 1 point for every card in a run of three or more. (Aces are low only) So: A-2-3 is 3 points. A-2-3-4 is 4 points. A-2-3-4-5 is 5 points. Easy enough. But there's also the hands like A-2-2-3. This is 6 points for the two distinct runs of three (and of course also scores two for the pair). Similarly A-2-2-2-3 is 9 points for the runs (and additionally scores 6 for the 3-of-a-kind). I'll leave 4-5-5-6-6 to the reader. Don't forget your 15s! 4 points for a flush - if every card in a hand except the starter is of the same suit, score 4. If the starter is also the same suit, score 1 extra point for 5 total. 1 point for nobs (AKA "the right jack"). If you hand contains the Jack of the same suit as the Starter card, score one point. Thanks! Cribbage_Squares_beta1.bin

here is a video of the 1st wave (and little of 2nd) of my Parsec 2600. https://youtu.be/Bje12dRGAeU I started out trying to make an exact copy of the TI99 Parsec and found it was a bit too much for the 2600. scrolling ground turned out to be the killer. So, I created a game inspired by with a lot of the game play of TI99 Parsec. will be looking for beta volunteers soon after I clean up some of the graphics and counters. Note: in the demo some collisions have been disabled.

My thoughts on the DOOM Multiplayer Beta (PS4)
gamegalaxy posted a topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I wanted to share my thoughts on the DOOM closed beta on PS4 that was up March 31st to April 3rd. They gave us two maps to play on and I was only able to get deathmatch games, but in short I loved it! -
beta The!Cart CPLD logic update - beta testers needed
HiassofT posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
During the last months I fixed a few bugs in the The!Cart CPLD logic and added a new feature to disable the The!Cart config registers when emulating foreign cartridge types. The new logic improves compatibility with existing cartridge images and prevents accidental flash corruption in case some program hits The!Cart config registers by mistake. We've tested the logic for quite some time without any issues, but now we need your help to test it on a broader variety of systems. If you know how to update the Xilinx CPLD logic via JTAG (it's the same procedure as with U1MB and incognito) here's the neccessary info: Download the beta logic (140209) from here: http://www.horus.com/~hias/thecart/logic/ If you run into issues with the beta logic, just program the original logic (131027) and you are fine again. Here are the detailled update instructions, with pictures of the PCB and the location of the JTAG pins: http://www.horus.com/~hias/thecart/jtag-update-docs/ Please report back here with your results or if you have questions. so long & thanks for your help, Hias
