  1. How to turn your XMAS tree into a Vectrex game!!! #vectrex #retrogaming #gaming #christmas https://youtube.com/shorts/UJEWz_p42Zc Download the game at my website: https://www.PlayVectrex.com/games 💙 Happy Holidays everyone! 💙
  2. What is everyone's first Atari memory? I'm primarily thinking of the 2600. Mine was Christmas 1980.... All the presents, Santa's and Mom and Dad's, had been opened and my brother and I were playing with our latest Star Wars figures. My brother had Lando Calrissian in his hand (who would some years later be cut in half by a lawn mower in an "accident" when my brother learned to cut the grass). My Dad said "What is that under the TV? (We had a Zenith 25" console TV). My brother tossed Lando aside and we pulled from under the TV a glorious Atari 2600 light sixer. We received 3 games to go with the pack in Combat. Circus Atari, Defender and Missile Command. My brother's favorite was Defender and mine was Missile Command. We played the whole day, fighting on who's turn it was to play. I remember it was bitter cold outside and we were in our pajamas all day. It was toasty warm inside and as the sun went down the only light in the house was from the Christmas tree that had been on all day. My Mom was on the sofa next to us napping. My Dad, having to go to work mid day on Christmas, calling on our Harvest Gold rotary phone to check on us. Telling us we had to share and to follow "10 minutes for you and 10 minutes for your brother" system. Also telling us "Let your mom sleep and keep the noise down." That memory is so vivid in my mind to this day. Just hearing the name Atari brings back such happy memories and I wanted to share.
  3. This year for Christmas I was only gifted things for my model trains addiction so I just gifted myself a 'Tunnels of Doom' cart and a -Atari Joyst to TI- adapter from eBay. How about yall'
  4. One of my favorite things to do is to explore Atari 8-bit ads in old retail Christmas catalogs. A few years ago, I went year by year and assembled some of the notable ads for the 8-bit computers and video game consoles. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! 5. Finally! This is going to be a fun one, I think. This idea came from two different places. First was last year's @ZeroPage Homebrew stream where he was trying to come up with Christmas, or at least winter themed games for a holiday show. I got to thinking about it, and realized that I couldn't come up with a single Christmas game for the 5200. Even winter themed games were hard to come by, I could only come up with RealSports Curling and that's kind of a stretch. So, I resolved myself to fix this problem. To create the much-needed Christmas game for the 5200. Enter my second idea. I had long been toying with the idea of doing a film adaptation. Now, obviously there are a ton of legal issues involved with this, so I thought it might be fun to adapt a movie in the public domain. It was then that inspiration struck, as I remembered that the 1964 holiday "classic" Santa Claus Conquers the Martians was in the public domain! Much like how Shimmer is both a floor wax and a dessert topping, my game could be both a Christmas game and a film adaptation! Two great tastes in one project. As a huge Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan, this is a movie I'm already very familiar with, so I started coming up with some basic ideas before I even rewatched the film for research. The idea I'm running with right now is for something very much like Jungle Hunt. A series of mostly independent screens with completely different game play on each screen. The screens will roughly follow the plot of the movie, with certain liberties taken here and there. I'll sum up the plot here: The children of Mars are depressed, or something. So Kimar, who seems to be the Martian leader, consults a wise old Martian for help. He learns that the children of Mars are moody because they don't have Christmas. Kimar hatches a plan to travel to Earth and kidnap Santa Claus so they can force him to bring Christmas to Mars. During the mission they meet Billy and Betty, a pair of Earth children who somehow get caught up in the whole mess. Kimar and his gang grab Santa, bringing him and the Earth children back to Mars. One particular Martian named Voldar keeps opposing Kimar every step of the way, believing that this whole Christmas thing will turn the people of Mars soft, into Martianmallows, if you will. Voldar is basically the movie's villain. Santa and the kids are put to work on Mars making toys, alongside Kimar's children Bomar and Girmar. Kimar builds a toy machine for Santa to help him, since he lacks his usual workshop and elves. Then there's Dropo, who seems to be some kind of servant to Kimar, as the "funny one." He develops an obsession with Santa and starts dressing up as him. Voldar sneaks in to disable the toy machine and finds Dropo in Santa garb, and decides to kidnap him thinking he's the real Santa. More hijinks ensue, and in the end Voldar is defeated in an epic toy battle, Dropo becomes the Santa Claus of Mars, and Santa and the children return to Earth in time for Christmas. Lots of great material to work with here! After a few viewings, I've come up with a rough five-stage plan which is of course subject to massive change: 1: North Pole Escape Early in the film, Billy and Betty are brought to the north pole by the Martians on their way to grab Santa. They escape the ship after Dropo released them and try to reach Santa's workshop to warn him. In the movie they are pursued by Voldar and the mighty robot Torg. A "polar bear" also gets involved. For this screen, I'm imagining some kind of maze chase where the kids have to evade Voldar, Torg, and the "polar bear" and reach Santa's workshop. In the movie, the kids are actually caught by Torg, but I'll take some creative license here. There's a part in the movie where Voldar follows the kids' footprints, so maybe I could work that in somehow. Voldar also gets scared off the by "polar bear" so that's another interesting angle. Torg fears nothing. 2. Airlock Escape On the way to Mars, Voldar tries to kill Santa and the kids by shooting them out of the airlock, but they escape due to Santa's magical ability to traverse air ducts or something. I think there's something workable here. 3. Martian toy shop This is just screaming out for a Pressure Cooker style order-fulfillment game, where you control the kids trying to correctly manage toys as they come out of the machine. 4. Voldar's cave After Voldar kidnaps Dropo, he takes him to a cave hideout which is locked by something called a nuclear curtain. I don't know what that is, but it sounds awesome. Dropo later escapes the cave, and I think there could be stage here involving these nuclear curtains. 5. Kids vs. Voldar Of course, the final showdown has to be here. This stage would involve the kids fighting Voldar in the toy shop to complete the cycle. After that, the game would loop with more difficulty, as good games do. So that's my rough plan. I should also mention that I'm planning to do this on a 512KB cartridge. This will allow me to make all kinds of cool intermission scenes, possibly with stills from the movie. I'm very much looking forward to it. I don't expect to be able to start any coding until at least after PRGE. Still working out design stuff. Each phase of the game can be worked on in isolation though, so it should be an interesting project.
  6. The Mrs and I spent well over 100 hours prepping, shooting, and editing "A Very Retro Yule Log" featuring each of the Atari 8-bit computers. Wanted to share here. Hope everyone likes it! -Thanks, Steve A Very Retro Computer Yule Log with Atari 8-Bits:
  7. - IS DIE HARD A CHRISTMAS MOVIE? - Not a argument, debate or question though it comes up every year, but simply MY take. Traditional? perhaps not, though watching every holiday season since release has been my tradition and I feel something missing without it. For myself personally though it will always be a "Christmas" movie for me, beyond many of the arguments given either way, though it released months before in Canada the Christmas theme must of been strong even then as a friend and I went to watch a special screening of it on, you guessed it, Christmas Eve in a large downtown theater in Toronto Canada. It was packed and brightly lit and decorated for Christmas including a huge indoor tree all decked out so as we proceeded to watch the movie I felt very much the Christmas "spirit" as all of us came together in the joy of celebrating this awesome action standard setting film.
  8. Happy holidays everyone!
  9. Hi everyone, I bought my dad an Atari Flashback 9 for christmas for us to play together. We plugged it in today and the video worked okay but there was no sound. After plugging it into multiple tvs and ports I found out that our menu was also different. I have the AR3230 model which uses composite cables, but the ports we plugged everything into are known to be functional. I'm not sure what else to do, is there a way to get the good menu and to fix the sound not working? The only suggestions on AtGames are to turn up the volume or to unplug and replug the audio cable.
  10. How good are you at recognizing and remembering Christmas tunes? Compete against a family member or friend if you have one, or take on the computer in three difficulty levels in this memory game where you match 10 pairs of songs. In two player mode, you can choose to use one or two controllers. Hopefully mostly bug free, though one never knows for sure... Computer difficulty levels: 1 - Beginner, will pick tiles randomly regardless or not if those have been flipped before. 2 - Intermediate, will pick the first tile randomly. If it matches a previously seen tile, it has 50% chance of picking that one, otherwise it picks another random one. 3 - Advanced, will pick the first tile randomly. If it matches a previously seen tile, it will always pick that one which means after a while it will more or less clean the board. Download the ROM here: merry.rom
  11. I made a goal to make a game for Christmas eve (in one day) on batari basic. I didn't have to much time so the game isn't really that great, but hopefully you'll enjoy it. Press fire to start the game Use the select switch the quit back to the menu (your score will reset to 0) Left Difficulty Switch to change the size of your paddle Right Difficulty Switch to alter the height of the cloud It's Christmas time, and your outside as a paddle catching snow flakes, but watch out these snow flakes are tricky. 13. As you all know, the 2015 edition of the Carol vs. The World! Championship is under way, and we've already had a good turnout by rookies and veterans alike. Now, I would like to introduce you to my fellow judges for this year's contest, hand-selected for their unique perspectives, strength of character, and passion for our hobby. Or something like that, I'm sure. Judges Panel: Albert - First off on the list is our friend and host, Al, operator and administrator of AtariAge itself. Al brings a sense of respectability and fair justice to the judges table, which is well needed in a panel full of excitable and passionate individuals. Revolutionika - Our very own Rev is in the ranks, providing good humour, promoting fairness and equality, and ensuring that fun remains the main focus of the championship. GroovyBee - Nobody is as groovy as the GroovyBee, who's passion is self evident in all his work. Groovy's keen programmer's eye and zen-like perspective helps us make sure that decisions are not done in haste, that judgements are consistent, and that respect for the game is maintained. "Mystery" Judge - And lastly at the judges table, perhaps reluctantly and unknowingly, is the "Mystery" judge (it's my wife, but don't let her know!); through whom I ran all my ideas, concerns, and suspicions, and always ask for council before making decisions or judgements. When I bring up a topic to the judges table for discussion, chances are that "Mystery" judge has already vetted it and influenced it. And of course, there's your's truly, DZ-Jay, wrangling the cats, having fun, but mostly just stirring trouble. Let's all welcome the new judges! New Rules: In case you are not aware, we've updated the contest rules this year in order to make it more fair and accessible to rookies and novices. The most important change is the creation of a separate rank and prize track for veteran players. The idea is to give a chance for rookies and experienced players to win prizes, without having to compete against each other in an uneven match. A "veteran" player is one who has participated in the contest before with a score of 2,000 points or higher. To celebrate their accomplishments, Santa Claus himself has anointed them with the special honorary title of Elite Knight Elves. The other judges and I believe this to be a better approach for everyone, but of course we welcome feedback. After all, this contest is for the community, and to share and have fun during the Christmas Season. So, don't be shy! Whether you've played the game one time, 500 times, or none at all -- you are all invited and welcome to post your scores, share in the merriment, and have a go at winning a prize. 15. AtariAge and that dude who made a game some time ago present... Carol vs. The World! 2015 Championship It is Christmas time once again and the fourth annual Carol vs. The World! Championship is upon us. Throughout the entire month of December, all boys and girls--naughty or nice--will have the opportunity not only to earn bragging rights, but to win actual prizes! This year, in an effort to encourage novices and newcomers to play, we are changing things a bit. We will separate the veteran players in their own category, so that they will not compete with newer players for prizes. We hope that this will balance the contest better and make it more fair to newcomers. There will be two categories: The regular players and the special "Elite Knight Elf" for veterans players, each with their own rankings and prizes. Veterans are those who have won awards or have submitted scores higher than 1,000 points in previous competitions. Please visit the Contest Rules and FAQ pages for more details on contest rankings. All that said, there are prizes for players of all skill levels, veterans and novices alike, and many other surprises! We encourage everyone to participate, submit their score, and join in the fun! Once again, we've partnered with AtariAge to include some more great prizes! The Top Players on each rank will receive a $25.00 gift certificate for the AtariAge Store, and the Grand Prize winner will be awarded a $50.00 gift certificate. How's that for a stocking stuffer? We've also changed the top prize! At stake this year is a custom-designed, one-of-a-kind Ultimate Video Arcade Marquee. Made with the same process and materials that classic arcade cabinets use, it will look just as great on your MAME cabinet or wall. Plus, the winner gets to help design his own Christmas Carol themed artwork! Like every year before, the championship starts at Midnight (EST) on December 1st, and goes all the way until Midnight (EST) on January 1st of the new year. The rules are simple: Play the Christmas Carol game on your Intellivision® console or PC. At the end of the game, record your final score by taking a photograph or screen-shot of the game screen. This will serve as proof of your score. Announce your points to the judges by posting the image right here or sending it via e-mail to the judges at: <cvw@CarolVsGhost.com>. Be sure to include the name you want to have displayed on the leaderboard. Wash, rinse, repeat as many times as you'd like, until the contest deadline of December 31st, 2015. That's it! There's nothing to buy and no registration required. Whether you play the game cartridge on an Intellivision® console, or the ROM edition on a PC or Mac, it's all the same. Just send us a photo or screen-grab of your score and you're in! We'll post all entries to the Official CvW Leaderboard as they come in, where they forever will remain immortalized on the Internet. Will you save Christmas from the twiggy arms of the Evil Snowman? Is the Ghost Of Christmas Presents your friend or foe? Can you attain a Perfect Christmas? Join us here in the official discussion thread of the CvW Championship! Get Ready... Go! 16. Part I: Who's Your Daddy? I was going through my e-mail archives today looking for a particular topic, when I inadvertently stumbled upon the actual birth of Christmas Carol! It's a conversation I had with Joe Z. during December 2010, while working on my port of Pac-Man. We were commenting on the colour limitations. It's funny how things turn out. It started out as a quick-and-dirty distraction and it ended up taking over my life for a significant period of time. Notice those fateful words at the end of the first message, "I'll continue with Pac-Man after Christmas." Well, I've seen that movie and I know how it ends! Anyway, below is the full conversation, at least those pertaining to the Birth Of Christmas Carol, which occurred at noon on Sunday, 19 of December, 2010. Watch the story unfold and read how the characters came to life. I've included the different versions of the ROMs as they were sent throughout the conversation. Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 11:55:22 -0500 On Dec 19, 2010, at 11:44, Joe Zbiciak wrote: > You're using color 13 (light blue, which is a bluish purple). Is color 12 > (pink) too close to red? Exactly. Color 13 was the only one that worked for Pinky. #12 looked more like bright Fuchsia than Pink, and so was too close to red--at least in jzIntv. > As for the eyes... yes, low res is a pain, isn't it? Tell me about it! *sigh* dZ. P.S. I decided to take what I have of Pac-Man right now and transform it into a quick and dirty game with a Christmas motif by changing the sprites and the maze. This is just as a "treat" for the guys on the list. I think I can pull it off in a couple of days, since it's mostly graphics changes. The logic will be just stupidly scripted antagonists moving around. I hope to have enough time to even include Arnauld's tracker playing a little Christmas ditty. It should be cool! Right now it's just blue blocks (ice cubes?), but I plan on changing it soon. The ghosts are there for testing, they will go away soon. Pac-Man will be replaced by a little elf sprite. The antagonists will be two: one ghost and an evil snowman. The power-pellets have turned into magical snowflakes. The fruit will be a wrapped present. The game is called "A Christmas Carol: The Ghost Of Christmas Presents". Yes, that's "presents," as in gift Here's the premise: An evil snowman has stolen Santa's Christmas presents and hid them away in a cave near the North Pole. The cave is haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Presents, who enjoys very much the company of wrapped packages and will not easily let them go. Santa has sent Elvin the elf to hunt down the snowman and bring back his presents. You must avoid the Ghost and retrieve the package from the cave before the evil snowman returns and kills you. There are four magical snowflakes strewn around the cave which, when touched, will temporarily make Elvin invincible. dZ. cc_test1.zip Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: Joe Zbiciak To: DZ-Jay Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 18:24:23 -0600 dZ, Cute! I think everyone will love it! BTW, I played around with it for a couple minutes and found a couple minor bugs. In the first screen shot, you can see that I managed to get PM to stop at a "dead end" at a half-card boundary (ie. I turned at the right spot, and I think the cornering logic did something funky, since you have some wide-open spaces that it's not accustomed to yet). In the second, PM is stuck. Once he hits the indicated spot, he stays stuck. --Joe Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 20:13:07 -0500 Regarding the half-card boundary, that was by design, but admittedly a stupid idea. I thought it would give the sprite a bigger range of motion, but it just ended up being weird. The other bug (screenshot #2) was real: That tile had a an open exit toward the wall, so as soon as Pac-Man enters the block, he can't get out. I fixed that. I also removed the half-card movement, so the Pac-Man can only move within the center of the paths, as you would expect. Can you try it now, please? dZ. cc_test2.zip Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: Joe Zbiciak To: DZ-Jay Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 20:23:16 -0600 dZ, Yep, the one hanging location is fixed. I did find another... --Joe Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 21:28:53 -0500 Gosh, I saw that one, sorry. I think that's all of those. The "maze" is defined as an ASCII map with exit attributes. What you are finding are those boo-boos such as this: ........ .######. ........ #......# ...^.... #......# ........ #......# .....>.. #......# ...v.... #......# ........ #......# ........ .######. Where a tile has an open exit pointing to a wall. I think there aren't any more. I'm working now on a simple Auto-Pilot script to move the Ghost around the maze. That way I don't have to worry about AI (at least not for the ghost). dZ. Ah yes, that makes sense. You can make similar sorts of "inconsistent world data" in Space Patrol by placing rocks and craters too near each other. Leads to some fun graphics glitches. > Where a tile has an open exit pointing to a wall. I think there > aren't any more. Coolness! :-) --Joe Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 21:54:43 -0500 OK, got the script ready! The Ghost goes on a pre-determined pattern, and your goal is to avoid him. Right now, collisions are not being checked, so it's just visual. Collisions are detected easily with the Pac-Man engine: it's a matter of comparing the virtual tile coordinates of the sprites after every move. Attached is the latest build with the Ghost script. In case you are curious, I have attached the script file. I also include the maze source file, in case you feel adventurous and want to play with the configuration (or search for more inconsistencies). I can honestly say that this silly, simple game is about 80% complete! dZ. cc_test3.zip Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 22:01:00 -0500 Oops! There's a rather big bug: When you eat an energi^H^H^H^H^H^Hmagical snowflake, the ghost disappears after flashing white. I went cleaning up the code that loops through four ghosts at a time and I may have messed up something there. I'll deal with it tomorrow. Talk to you later! dZ. Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: Joe Zbiciak To: DZ-Jay Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2010 21:02:34 -0600 I was just about to report that. Guess you found it on your side. :-) Yeah, the AI state machine stuff can be easy to mess up in unique ways. I remember having some weird crashes in SP when trying to get ships to exit, for example. Subject: Re: Pac-Man auto-pilot test From: DZ-Jay To: Joe Zbiciak Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2010 06:42:53 -0500 OK. I fixed the frightened color issue. Although in this mini game, the frightened mode should just make the elf twinkle (for invincibility) instead of changing the ghost. I also altered the script to introduce pauses every so often, where the Ghost looks around. Sometimes he does a "double-take" before moving It's all definitely non-random, but my focus is to use my already existing assets, and I don't have any AI or random elements pre-fab. I'll spend some more time in the maze (my wife wants me to add Christmas trees), and then I'll start working on collisions. Oh, and a slight change of title. The game is now "Christmas Carol vs. The Ghost of Christmas Presents." Carol is the elf, you see. (Please don't kill me dZ. cc_test4.zip

  18. So...this is my brother and me after opening a package under the tree, addressed to the two of us...I'm the grinning blond kid! Christmas 1982. I recently was looking for this picture and asked my folks to just grab a random photo album from their stash so I could find it...and *boom!*....found it! I had asked for the Coleco table-top Pac-Man game. I was (and still am!) a huge Pac-Man fan and wanted that thing. Now...I thought it was going to be an exact duplicate of the arcade game -- think MAME in a table-top box! -- so obviously I never actually saw it or heard it in action! My parents had talked to other folks about it and heard horror stories about it, so, as my dad told me, they thought the Atari would be a better investment. And they bought the Pac-Man cartridge and slipped it in the box. The next day there was a sale at a local department store, so my brother and I decided to pool money we got for Christmas and get a few Atari games. For whatever reason, Street Racer was on the list (probably because 1) it was on sale and 2) it would give us an excuse to use the paddles). Also for whatever reason we had to decide between Outlaw and Superman -- I opted for Outlaw because I played it before and liked it. Then up for discussion was Missile Command (my brother wanted that), and Defender (my choice); Missile Command won out because it was cheaper. Still have the original five games (although i might have sold off my Street Racer recently after getting a lower-case label variation), but not the original console - shortly after we got this the controller port stopped working, probably due to frequent swapping of joystick and paddles, so the console was taken back for a replacement, which many years later I sold to Inky after I got my 7800. And no, sadly, we didn't keep the box.
  19. C64 has nice long Christmas demos: http://youtu.be/TuDzyz381IA http://youtu.be/8Nfgdr4fOS8 Do we have something similar? I only remember animated tree demos. If not, it would be nice to make it, in time for next year Christmas!
  20. I stumbled over this today. Some songs are... well... But e.g. Silent Night and Auld Lang Syne sound ok.
  21. AtariAge and that dude who made a game some time ago present... Carol vs. The World! 2014 Championship It is Christmas time once again and the third annual Carol vs. The World!
