  1. AtariAge and that dude who made a game some time ago present... Carol vs. The World! 2015 Championship It is Christmas time once again and the fourth annual Carol vs. The World! Championship is upon us. Throughout the entire month of December, all boys and girls--naughty or nice--will have the opportunity not only to earn bragging rights, but to win actual prizes! This year, in an effort to encourage novices and newcomers to play, we are changing things a bit. We will separate the veteran players in their own category, so that they will not compete with newer players for prizes. We hope that this will balance the contest better and make it more fair to newcomers. There will be two categories: The regular players and the special "Elite Knight Elf" for veterans players, each with their own rankings and prizes. Veterans are those who have won awards or have submitted scores higher than 1,000 points in previous competitions. Please visit the Contest Rules and FAQ pages for more details on contest rankings. All that said, there are prizes for players of all skill levels, veterans and novices alike, and many other surprises! We encourage everyone to participate, submit their score, and join in the fun! Once again, we've partnered with AtariAge to include some more great prizes! The Top Players on each rank will receive a $25.00 gift certificate for the AtariAge Store, and the Grand Prize winner will be awarded a $50.00 gift certificate. How's that for a stocking stuffer? We've also changed the top prize! At stake this year is a custom-designed, one-of-a-kind Ultimate Video Arcade Marquee. Made with the same process and materials that classic arcade cabinets use, it will look just as great on your MAME cabinet or wall. Plus, the winner gets to help design his own Christmas Carol themed artwork! Like every year before, the championship starts at Midnight (EST) on December 1st, and goes all the way until Midnight (EST) on January 1st of the new year. The rules are simple: Play the Christmas Carol game on your Intellivision® console or PC. At the end of the game, record your final score by taking a photograph or screen-shot of the game screen. This will serve as proof of your score. Announce your points to the judges by posting the image right here or sending it via e-mail to the judges at: <cvw@CarolVsGhost.com>. Be sure to include the name you want to have displayed on the leaderboard. Wash, rinse, repeat as many times as you'd like, until the contest deadline of December 31st, 2015. That's it! There's nothing to buy and no registration required. Whether you play the game cartridge on an Intellivision® console, or the ROM edition on a PC or Mac, it's all the same. Just send us a photo or screen-grab of your score and you're in! We'll post all entries to the Official CvW Leaderboard as they come in, where they forever will remain immortalized on the Internet. Will you save Christmas from the twiggy arms of the Evil Snowman? Is the Ghost Of Christmas Presents your friend or foe? Can you attain a Perfect Christmas? Join us here in the official discussion thread of the CvW Championship! Get Ready... Go! 2. Hello, everyone! After months in development, I am ready to start a label contest for my Atari 2600 homebrew game, Drive! In this game, you are an explorer with a fancy car who steals a booby-trapped golden idol from a temple, which causes the structure to collapse. You drive down a bridge as it collapses behind you, avoiding obstacles in your path, collecting treasures, and doing everything you can to survive. Download the ROM and try the game for yourself: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/250070-drive/ Screenshots: The setting of the game is something like if Indiana Jones meets flashy red sports cars, and ideally the art would reflect this, but generally you have full creative control! The winner will get: A free copy of the game Your artwork featured on the cartridge label and the front cover of the manual Your name written in the Credits section of the manual For now, I'll set the deadline to June 20th. If necessary, I will extend it. Have fun, and good luck!
  3. Intellivision IntyBASIC Programming Contest 2015 Welcome to the first IntyBASIC game programming contest held on AtariAge (thanks Albert!). The contest is open to all IntyBASIC programmers and is sponsored by GroovyBee, nonner242, nanochess, CollectorVision and Albert. Further prizes are being offered by revolutionika and cmart604, and awards will be given to entries that place 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Drop us a PM if you'd also like to help out with some more prizes! THE RULES So you can get started, the basic rules are laid out below: The competition starts today (Wednesday 1st of July 2015) and the deadline for submissions is 00:00 GMT on the 1st of January 2016 (midnight on the 31st of December) - this gives you around 6 months of development time. There will be no competition unless a minimum of six entries are submitted by the deadline. Your game(s) must be developed in IntyBASIC and use the default prologue/epilogue files. The only assembly language statement allowed within your game is the ORG statement so that you can develop a larger game. However, bank switching is not permitted. All submitted games must meet the entry criteria to be valid. The games submitted do not necessarily need to be new, but must be your own work, not sold commercially or released in cartridge format previously. NTSC must be supported, with additional PAL support optional (but encouraged). The maximum number of single entries from a person or group is set at three. If more entries are made, the applicant has the opportunity to replace a previous entry with a new one. The 1st prize winning game may be published by CollectorVision (should it's developer enter into an agreement to do so). This matter will be discussed privately with the parties concerned and if an agreement is reached a public announcement will be made later. There will be a panel of judges (announced in full over the coming weeks), and entries will be scored on a points basis across several criteria. The decision of the panel is final. All game ROMs below 1st prize (2nd, 3rd etc.) will be published after judging has been completed. However, if the 1st prize game is to be published by CollectorVision its ROM will be distributed after game sales have completed. All entries must be submitted via email to contest@intybasic.com by the closing date. The judges will declare the results of the contest by 12:00 GMT on the 31st of January 2016. GAME ENTRY Each entry into the contest must consist of the following items to be valid :- Game image in *.rom or *.bin+*.cfg. Brief instructions on how to play the game. IntyBASIC source code (and any data files). Instructions on how to build the IntyBASIC source code (this must also include IntyBASIC compiler version number). As part of the validation process, each entry's source code will be built using its instructions and the final binary produced must match the submitted binary image 100%. Any entry that fails this criteria will not be judged. It is not necessary for any contestant to publish the source code to their entry. However, if they wish to do so before the contest closes, they will be awarded an extra 5 points. Competition contestants are free to discuss their game's progress, provide source code and WIP ROMs and to also help other contestants should they wish to do so. Your entry must be submitted via email to contest@intybasic.com by the competition's closing date. THE JUDGING PANEL The panel of judges is as follows :- Albert Yarusso (Albert) Mark Ball (GroovyBee) nonner242 Oscar Toledo G. (nanochess) J-F (retroillucid) Judges are not permitted to enter the contest themselves. However, they are permitted to answer technical questions and provide assistance to applicants publicly when required. DZ-Jay will validate the entries. His role is to ensure that only the permitted assembly language is used in the game and that an exact game binary can be produced. SCORING SYSTEM The criteria that each game will be evaluated on are: Originality (1 ro 10) - Is the game based on a new idea or a twist on an established design? Concept (1 to 10) - Quality of game design. Execution (1 to 10) - Execution of design, taking into account controls, NTSC/PAL compatibility. Graphics (1 to 10) - Quality of graphics and animation. Sound (1 to 10) - Quality of music and sound effects. Presentation (1 to 10) - Overall presentation. Game play (1 to 10) - A measure of how enjoyable the game is to play. Lasting Appeal (1 to 10) - Replay value, addictiveness. Source code (5) - These points are awarded to any coder that publishes his/her game's source code publicly. When the panel has scored each game accordingly, the totals for each criteria will be added together for each game to give it a final score. PRIZES First prize: Game on Bee3 cartridge (1 copy only). 4. As you all know, the 2015 edition of the Carol vs. The World! Championship is under way, and we've already had a good turnout by rookies and veterans alike. Now, I would like to introduce you to my fellow judges for this year's contest, hand-selected for their unique perspectives, strength of character, and passion for our hobby. Or something like that, I'm sure. Judges Panel: Albert - First off on the list is our friend and host, Al, operator and administrator of AtariAge itself. Al brings a sense of respectability and fair justice to the judges table, which is well needed in a panel full of excitable and passionate individuals. Revolutionika - Our very own Rev is in the ranks, providing good humour, promoting fairness and equality, and ensuring that fun remains the main focus of the championship. GroovyBee - Nobody is as groovy as the GroovyBee, who's passion is self evident in all his work. Groovy's keen programmer's eye and zen-like perspective helps us make sure that decisions are not done in haste, that judgements are consistent, and that respect for the game is maintained. "Mystery" Judge - And lastly at the judges table, perhaps reluctantly and unknowingly, is the "Mystery" judge (it's my wife, but don't let her know!); through whom I ran all my ideas, concerns, and suspicions, and always ask for council before making decisions or judgements. When I bring up a topic to the judges table for discussion, chances are that "Mystery" judge has already vetted it and influenced it. And of course, there's your's truly, DZ-Jay, wrangling the cats, having fun, but mostly just stirring trouble. Let's all welcome the new judges! New Rules: In case you are not aware, we've updated the contest rules this year in order to make it more fair and accessible to rookies and novices. The most important change is the creation of a separate rank and prize track for veteran players. The idea is to give a chance for rookies and experienced players to win prizes, without having to compete against each other in an uneven match. A "veteran" player is one who has participated in the contest before with a score of 2,000 points or higher. To celebrate their accomplishments, Santa Claus himself has anointed them with the special honorary title of Elite Knight Elves. The other judges and I believe this to be a better approach for everyone, but of course we welcome feedback. After all, this contest is for the community, and to share and have fun during the Christmas Season. So, don't be shy! Whether you've played the game one time, 500 times, or none at all -- you are all invited and welcome to post your scores, share in the merriment, and have a go at winning a prize. 7. Hosted By Von Crap Tournament 7 is now open for registration: http://retrocontests.herokuapp.com/#/ Participants will be prompted to sign up for the site before they can register for the tournament. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Crap Tournament is a yearly MAME competition where all the titles are selected based on their relative obscurity or overall lousiness. Every year brings in new pure crap and some hidden gems - you'll play some of the worst games ever made, and discover some amazing titles you never would've played without the tournament. The games are hilarious, but the competition is fierce. Think you're a true gamer? Come prove it in the Crap Arena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dates for the Contest: The tournament will last 10 days, stretching over 2 weekends, beginning May 1st and ending May 10th. Number of Games The tournament will consist of 12 games, none of which will be announced until moments before the tournament start. Of these 12 games, 10 will be announced at the start of the tournament, while the remaining 2 will only be announced at the beginning of the closing weekend (May 8th). Proper game settings will be detailed for each title. Scoring Format The scoring format is simple: 12 points for first on any given title, 11 points for 2nd,... 1 point for 12th, and points are only awarded for places 1 through 12. Thus, a prefect score for this tournament would be 144, regardless of the number of participants, and it's entirely possible to accumulate 0 points despite submitting a score for every game. In other words, the competition will be rough, and the winner will be the player who is the best all around crapper. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once the tournament officially starts, an easy submission process, live updating standings for each game, and an overall leader board will become visible for all registered participants. As part of the submission process participants will have the option to attach an inp or link to a Twitch stream highlight. Either option is fine, and neither will be mandated unless the submission claims a 1st place. This will allow participants to easily update the scoreboard with their submissions as often as possible without getting bogged down making Twitch highlights for every score they obtain, but still maintain some element of interactivity on the scoreboard itself as 1st place scores begin to change hands. To be clear: streaming and creating Twitch highlights is not a requirement, recording inps is not a requirement, but 1st place score submissions will not be accepted without one of the two. (For me personally, recording and uploading inps is not in any way a nuisance, and I plan on doing so for every sore I submit. Making Twitch highlights, on the other hand, is a little time consuming and I only plan to do so for scores I don't intend to best later on in the contest.) All MAME versions 106 and later are legal for this contest (just be sure to specify which version was used when uploading inps), and if a player somehow actually has cab access to one of the crap titles they are of course welcome to play on the original hardware. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Get busy crappin' or get busy dyin'

  16. As the Carol vs. The World! championship continues, Santa has added a new twist to the challenge... Game Achievements! Achievements are small incremental goals that track your progress through the game. They can serve as additional personal challenges or provide extra bragging rights. They are completely optional, and do not really affect your chances in the competition. They're just neat to earn and brag about, and lots of fun! All your earned achievements will be shown right next to your high-score in the official Carol vs. The World! Championship leaderboard. So, head on down to the main contest web site and visit the Achievements section for more information. http://www.carolvsghost.com/cvw2013 With 27 achievements in total, how many can you earn? How do they work? Some achievements are earned automatic, meaning that they occur as you play normally. These can be inferred from the score, so submitting your high score photo as usual is sufficient. Others require that you submit proof separately. For instance, consider achievement "Santa's Magic Touch," which is earned when you reach 300 points. When you submit your normal high score entry, if the score is greater than 300 points, you will be awarded the achievement automatically. In contrast, to earn the achievement "The Perfectionist Elf," you must submit a separate photo showing proof that you got a "Perfect Level Bonus." This may or may not be your high score entry submission. For more information on achievements check out the Frequently Asked Questions page.
  17. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! Check out our big announcement in the HSC forum, and see what all the fuss is about! Joy to the World. Peace on Earth. And ROM's for all Mankind.
  18. While on a routine Stellar Cartography mission, UESC Rains experienced a malfunction and warped into an asteroid field in an unknown sector of space. Unable to get a bearing to safely warp out, the ship must blast the asteroids into smithereens to prevent imminent destruction. To make matters worse, the local inhabitants are xenophobic and have sent warships and Magna-Mines to eliminate the alien (that's you!) threat. AtariAge and homebrew author Darrell Spice, Jr. are proud to announce a label contest for the upcoming game Space Rocks! If you're a fan of the arcade games Asteroids or Asteroids Deluxe you'll love Space Rocks. While Atari released a version of Asteroids for the 2600, it pales in comparison to what Darrell Spice, Jr. has crafted in his version. Space Rocks is a 32K game that takes full advantage of our Melody Board resulting in a game that pushes the Atari 2600 hardware to its limits. The graphics, animations, and sound effects are well above what is typically experienced on the 2600. Space Rocks Features: One or Two Players Head-to-Head or Cooperative Two Player Modes Vector or Solid graphic styles Mutlicolor rocks, or choose one of 16 monochrome color themes Four difficulty levels: Kids, Easy, Normal, and Hard Choose Shields, Hyperspace or 180 Degree Turn when you press Down on the controller Friction can be turned on or off Bonus life can be set to 5K, 10K, 20K or disabled Supports Gamepads and Joysticks Magna-Mines can be toggled on or off The above video will give you a good feel for Space Rocks. If you'd like to try the game yourself, you can download the latest version of Space Rocks here. You'll need the latest version of the Stella Atari 2600 Emulator to run Space Rocks. If you'd like to learn more about the game's development, you can read this ten page thread (as of this writing) in our Homebrew Discussion Forum. The winner of the contest will receive a copy of Space Rocks in cartridge form, featuring their winning label design. The winner will also receive a $50 gift certificate in the AtariAge Store. The contest will run until 11:59pm (CST), Sunday, November 11th, 2012 and all submissions must be received by this time! After the contest has ended, AtariAge and Darrell Spice, Jr. will review the contest entries and select the winner. Click Here to Enter Today! Please feel free to ask any questions or make any comments in this thread. Good luck!

  20. Hi people, just came accross some news on the MSX site, that pointed me to Retrospectiva 2012. It's a contest by the Argentina retro community. Of interest is the BASIC game writing contest for 8 bit computers. So why does this matters to us? Well the TI-99/4A is the only 16 bit home computer allowed to enter in the contest. Rumours say that the TI-99/4A was quite popular in Argentina. But I never had contact with Argentina TI-99'ers on Atariage nor in the Y! groups. Check here: http://www.msx.org/n...art-competition http://rsp.retrocomputacion.com/
  21. Hello people! The winner of the Telegames Custom Box contest will be selected later today! There are 47 registered contestants, each of whom has been assigned a number between 1 and 47. The winning number will be picked in a short YouTube video, which will be posted later today, in this thread. The winner will be contacted by e-mail after the YouTube video has been posted.. Good luck to all participants!
