SIDE3 Loader Beta: Best way to partition 16GB SD card?
Calab posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I've an Atari 600XL with U1MB and SIDE3 cartridge. I've updated the firmware on the SIDE3 to the beta and have been trying to figure out the best way to set up my 16GB SD card in the SIDE3. Before updating I had a 4GB SD card (still OK). The first partition is 256MB FAT (524288 sectors of 512 bytes) as DN: (read only in SpartaDOS with FATFS.SYS). The second partition is 3.5GB and contains four 32MB partitions (65535 sectors of 512 bytes) as D5: though D8:. 7079870 sectors (3.6GB) are unused. With the new SIDE3 Loader, what is the best way to set up a new 16GB SD card? Is there a way to boot to CLI.XEX instead of SpartaDOS? Should I even want to do this? I also noticed that in FDISK I can create a 4GB FAT16 partition. Can SpartaDOS use this? The new Loader look great! I'm looking forward to it being finalized and all the new features being available! Thanks! -
Anybody have the original software that came with the Trak AT Series drives? They're supposed to come with a utility/patch called DDINIT, which will modify Atari DOS 2.0S to support double-density. Failing that, I'd settle for a copy of DOS 2.0S already modified with this utility.

If anyone can answer any of the following questions concerning Atari and 3rd Party floppy drive hardware for our 8-bits, I would appreciate it. The information is needed for continued construction of my forthcoming hardware site. I don't own any of the following hardware, otherwise I'd tear is apart and find out the needed info. The Atari 8-bit FAQ has already been searched, as well as whatever information might be available on Atariage and other sites on the net. Atari 810 Manufactured in Sunnyvale? Micro Peripherals mech part #? Atari 1050 Western Storage Technology mech part #? Rana 1000 RAM size? Micro Peripherals mech part #? Percom AT-88 Tandon & Micro Peripherals mech part #'s? Amdek AMDC I/II RAM size? Drive mech?

Hello to all, In a video on the YouTube channel of "8-bit show and tell" Glitch World In Commodore 64 Ninja - YouTube I discovered a floppy disk version of Ninja (Mastertronics) where the Atari and Commodore versions are on the same side of the disk. Floppy disks with Atari on one side and Commodore on the other side are very common. But I don't understand at all how to fit two versions for two very different computers on the same side of a floppy disk... Can someone explain to me how this is possible? I don't know anything about the Commodore floppy disk format, but I doubt that it is organized like the Atari one. Apart from the fact that they share the physical format 5"1/4 and 48 TPI, the rest must be very different, right? Or is it a common formatting that can be read on both? I'm really curious to know the answer. Thanks in advance,

Back in the mid 80's... I wrote my own SpartaDOS disk directory sorting utility out of sheer necessity having some fairly large drives and dirs on my BBS system. While playing with this program the other night, I accidentally sorted a DOS 2 disk... oops. My brute force sorter trashed the disk as I suspected it would. So I need to be able to detect a SpartaDOS disk before sorting. I know the SDFS version is stored at offset $20 in sector 1 of the Sparta disk. This would be easy enough to check but I feel I need something additional. It looks like offset 8 in sector 1 = $80 on the SpartaDOS disk but I am not sure if this is definitive enough. I have checked a few different disks and so far I have only seen $80 in offset 8 on the Sparta disks. Any other ideas??

SOLD! $35 Shipped 1 Fellows and 1 Memorex 3.5" disk file box. Both boxes still have their plastic dividers and are if good but used condition. Includes 60+ used discs in various conditions but all were readable when I checked their contents. Some have been erased. Some only had data written to them once and some were used multiple times. Bonus: I've included about 30 brand new disk labels as well.

Hi everyone! I got a TRS-80 Color Computer 2 about a month ago, and I need software for it. It came with nothing other than the unit, so I ordered a tape interface cable and a floppy controller kit. I couldn't find any cheap software for tape/disk, and so I'm asking here to see if I can get a deal. If you have any cartridges, tapes or disks for the CoCo 1 or 2 (64k), contact me and we can negotiate a price. My email: lucasgreer2@gmail.com

Hello, all. As part of my continued spring cleaning efforts I'm selling my Taiwanese video game collection for PC (DOS) and Mega Drive. Also included are two American games. Some pretty cool stuff here, most are rather difficult to find: PC: 熊貓大進擊 (aka Panda, Go!) <- Two versions: One complete (CD version), second is disks and manual only. 西楚霸王項羽 (aka Xiang Yu, The Overlord of Western Chu) <- Complete except for outer box. 西遊記 (aka Journey to the West) <- Two versions: Both complete (CD and disk; disk version not pictured because box looks exactly the same). 爆笑保齡球 (aka Hilarious Bowling) <- Complete. VR網球96 (aka VR Tennis '96) <- Complete. 排球原人 (aka Volleyball Hominid) <- Disks and manual only. 天才寶寶大進擊 (aka Little Geniuses, Go!) <- Disks and manual only. Metal & Lace: The Battle of the Robo Babes <- Complete. One Must Fall 2097 <- CD w/manual & all inserts. MD: 麻雀惡魔塔 (aka Devilish Mahjong Tower) <- Complete. 悟空外傳 (aka Legend of Wukong) <- Complete. 世界職棒爭霸戰 (aka World Pro Baseball '94) <- Complete. All disks/CDs in great shape. Recently all were tested. All CDs are fine. Floppy disks however, ~95% read OK w/no errors. However I cannot guarantee any of the data on the floppy disks due to age. Game cartridges likewise are recently tested. They work fine. I originally bought these games for research purposes, including making scans. Staples were removed from the manuals in order to get the highest quality scans. Sold "as-is." Please keep this in mind when considering a purchase. I prefer to sell the collection complete, for USD$350 -> USD$300 (includes shipping within USA). Please inquire about international shipping. Please get in touch by PRIVATE MESSAGE if interested. And don't litter the thread with "PM Sent!" messages. Nobody cares. Pardon the lackluster photos. Thanks for having a look.

I have two 810 side boards with what look like ROM upgrades, using piggybacked chips. One has a data separator board, the other doesnt: I also have a side board with a windowed FDC: Are these of any interest for ROM dumps?

At this point in time, what's the best utility to bulk covert .dsk files into TIFILES/FIAD files? For example, I give it TIInvaders.dsk, I get individual LOAD, GAME,GAMF, and CATALOG files out of it, each with a proper header, since that's the files that are on that disk. I have a bunch of .dsk files I'd like to process, hence my looking for a bulk solution. The goal is to be able to use them with Classic99. (I know Classic99 can use .dsk files, but I want to be able to easily mix and match what files are on the "disk".)

Hello everyone, I did some searching and didn't find anything here, and my internet searches have turned up varied results, but I'm trying to look for the best solution to connect 8" drives with the 50 pin format to the ATR 8000 with the 34 pin format. I don't recall if my old drives had an adapter board on them to step it down, but since I have ribbon cables a mile long that should have been for those drive cabinets back in the day, I can see it was a straight 34 pin cable. There's some people selling boards with various capabilities, but they might not be what I need for my purposes, so I thought I'd check in here. I'm sure only a small handful of people will have any experience with these anyway with the Atari systems. If nothing is out there, my next question would be whether there is logic in the adaptation to allow the drives to work, or if it was simply a straight cable that didn't use extra pins for additional functionality that the 8" drives may be capable of. I think I can find schematics and make a cable if it comes to it, and maybe even off of what came with the drives. Thanks for any information you guys might have to offer. --Todd--

PLATOTerm 1.1 Lite for Atari 8-bit systems is released. Available in 16K cartridge and single-file bin versions. No preferences, 1200 baud only, but it is a complete terminal. Come get it! https://github.com/tschak909/platoterm64/releases/tag/PLATOTERM-ATARI-LITE-1.1#irataonline #plato #platoterm #atari Have attached release notes here, as well: PLATOTerm Lite Version 1.1 ===================== About The Atari Lite Release ================== This is a special version of PLATOTerm, that has been re-organized to fit the code within approximately 16K of space, so that it can be fit onto a cartridge, or with other programs on a disk. In order to do this, preferences was eliminated completely, and 1200 baud is the only data rate supported. But the upside is, you can flash this onto a cartridge. Like the larger version, PLATOTerm requires a loaded R: handler. The cartridges are configured to load the DOS first, before jumping into the main program, so any handlers you wish to run, you should be sure they are loaded first (e.g with AUTORUN.SYS). Since devices like the Atari 850 can autoboot their handler if no disk drive is present, they will also work with the cartridge version. Just be sure that the 850 interface is switched on, before poweron. R-Verter users must ensure their handler is loaded, before starting PLATOTerm. The only available hotkeys are: * SELECT-T to switch to TTY mode. * SELECT-P to switch to PLATO mode. * SELECT-RETURN to send a carriage return and a line feed. Versions available: ============ There are file and cartridge versions available for the following touch devices: * Amiga mouse * standard Joystick * Koala/Atari Touch Tablet * Atari Trak-Ball * Atari ST mouse ------------------ What is PLATOTerm? ------------------ PLATOTerm is a terminal emulator to access CYBIS services now available on the Internet utilizing a WIFI Modem, or (soon!) an Ethernet device supported by a Crynwr Packet Driver. For the purposes of this documentation. PLATO and CYBIS are interchangeable names for the same platform. -------------------------------------------------------------- What services are currently available to access via PLATOTerm? -------------------------------------------------------------- As of writing this preliminary documentation (October 2018), there are two major CYBIS systems running. CYBER1.ORG and IRATA.ONLINE. --------------------------- WHAT IS PLATO? (aka CYBIS?) --------------------------- (from the PLATO wikipedia page:) PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations), was the first generalized computer-asisted instruction system. Starting in 1960, it ran on the University of Illinois ILLIAC I computer. By the late 1970s, it supported several thousand graphics terminals distributed worldwide, running on nearly a dozen different networked mainframe computers. Many modern concepts in multi-user computing were originally developed on PLATO, including forums, message boards, online testing, e-mail, chat rooms, picture languages, instant messaging, remote screen sharing, and multi-player games. ------------------- What is CYBER1.ORG? ------------------- CYBER1.ORG is a CYBIS system initially set up in 2004, as a haven for ex-PLATO users to experience a classic PLATO author experience. CYBER1.ORG is home to many thousands of classic PLATO lessons and notesfiles which have been restored from various sources, and have been made available in the interests of preserving PLATO. --------------------- What is IRATA.ONLINE? --------------------- IRATA.ONLINE is a CYBIS system that has been set up for the benefit of the greater vintage computing community, in the interest to provide a unique experience that can be accessed on a wide variety of vintage computers with a bitmapped graphics display. To this end, IRATA.ONLINE develops PLATOTerm for dozens of platforms, so that they can access CYBIS systems, as well as provide a community and learning infrastructure for vintage computing users of all types, in the hopes that as a cohesive community, something unique can hopefully emerge. ----------------------------------------------------------- What is the connection between IRATA.ONLINE and CYBER1.ORG? ----------------------------------------------------------- CYBER1.ORG and IRATA.ONLINE are independent of one another. With that said, the reason IRATA.ONLINE and PLATOTerm exist, are because of the efforts of CYBER1.ORG to not only preserve a running PLATO system, and provide the necessary information for interested parties to write terminal software to access CYBIS systems, but also in their effort to produce a publically available distribution of CYBIS that others who are interested may also run their own CYBIS installation. IRATA.ONLINE is a direct result of the public release of this distribution. -------------------------- Connecting to IRATA.ONLINE -------------------------- Once PLATOTerm is started, you can connect to CYBER1.ORG using your WIFI modem, using a command such as: ``` ATDTIRATA.ONLINE:8005 ``` ------------------------ Connecting to CYBER1.ORG ------------------------ Once PLATOTerm is started, you can connect to CYBER1.ORG using your WIFI modem, using a command such as: ``` ATDTCYBERSERV.ORG:8005 ``` PLATO Keyboard ------------------- The PLATO keyboard is mapped to the Atari keys, like so: | PLATO KEY | Atari Key | |--- |--- | | ANS | CTRL-A | | BACK | CTRL-B | | SHIFT-BACK | CTRL- + (left arrow) | | COPY | CTRL-C | | SHIFT-COPY | CTRL- - (up arrow) | | DATA | CTRL-D || | SHIFT-DATA | SHIFT-CTRL-D | | EDIT | CTRL-E | | SHIFT-EDIT | SHIFT-CTRL-E | | FONT | CTRL-F | | ÷ | CTRL-G | | HELP | CTRL-I | | SHIFT-HELP | SHIFT CTRL-H | | LAB | CTRL-L | | SHIFT-LAB | CTRL-= (down arrow) | | SUPER | CTRL-P | | SHIFT-SUPER | SHIFT CTRL-P | | SQUARE | CTRL-Q | | ACCESS | SHIFT CTRL-Q | | STOP | CTRL-S | | SHIFT-STOP | SHIFT CTRL-S | | TERM | CTRL-T | | × | CTRL-X | | SUB | CTRL-Y | | SHIFT-SUB | SHIFT CTRL-Y | | CR and LF | Select RETURN | Pressing the function keys will cycle through all possible color values. I am writing as an ancient original TI user, not adept with hardware and very fond of the original TI concept of plug n play. Not keen on changing the original hardware. My original iron works, I have a sidecar 32k, and FG99. My ancient TI floppy drives are now temperamental and unreliable (the original disks even more so). I can write TI programs with emulators, but I am not able now to reliably write programs and save them or use programs that need disk storage on the original hardware. I have kept up as best I can with the TIPI project and deduced this is absolutely not for me - I don't have a Windows machine, and its setup and use has been written up to be horrendously difficult. The MBX works (which is an external CPU), it just plugs in and works, no problems. So- still looking for something to plug into the sideport that I can store files on. The CF7 seems to use a memory card that is very expensive or hard to source here- I'd like something that used an SDHC card not unlike the FG99. And was easy to use, plug in, put in SDHC card, save file (well, maybe use a disk formatter - perhaps on-board? or something). Oh yes- my 32k sidecar is not extendable, so any new device sidecar would need a connecter for the 32k to plug into! or have its own 32k replacement on board. Just a wish list! Stephen

Hi everyone I just got myself an Atari 800XL (PAL) in a trade and I'm so far enjoying it. I'm much more familiar with Sinclair and Commodore machines, so I'm really enjoying getting to know a new old computer. I've ordered an SIO2SD and plan on filling an SD card up with ATR images, but so far a lot of the PAL games I've found are on cassette or ROM cartridge. I know on the C64 you can extract the prg file from the tape image and put that on a disk image. Can this be done on the Ataris? I was thinking of making up a flash cart for the system to handle cartridge games, but it would be nice to do everything using disk images if possible. As I say, I'm new to the system, so assume I know next to nothing about it. I didn't know my SIO from my elbow this time last week.

I was reading the Dos 3 manual (ducks) while sitting in the smallest room of my house (guess which one that is) : "In addition to the Master Diskette 3 (CX8104), your ATARI Disk Drive comes with an ATARI Formatted Diskette 3 (CX8111). Although this diskette has no files or program data on it, it has been preformatted at the factory. Preformatting means the diskette was divided into tracks and sectors before packaging (Figure 3-1) so that it has an improved sector layout. This improved sector layout makes it possible for you to store and retrieve information more rapidly than is possible with diskettes formatted on your ATARI Disk Drive." How do these improved sector layouts work? Or is this bogus and Atari just wanted you to buy these "improved" disks from them?

Hello I am using an Atari STE 520 with a HxC device called the "USB floppy drive emulator" in revision D made by Lotharek. This is the version which lacks jumper switches, but lets you select the device ID in software. Using this device as a internal floppy drive works acceptable. However I run into problems when I try to use it as an external FDD with a cable made by this guide: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=26656 Sadly the Wiki entry which is mentioned in this guide is broken. All internal jumpers inside my STE are on their default (http://info-coach.fr/atari/hardware/interfaces.php) so pin 5 of the 14 pin connector would try to reach a FDD with ID 1 (rather than 0). The problem is that it won't work for me... The control LED of the HxC device for floppy access just lights up if I set the HxC to DS2 (all normal) or DS1 (with twisted cable). With those configuration I can for example open the floppy folder of "orbital destroyer". The internal FDD does sounds when doing so. If I then start the game the internal FDD continues to make sound, but the external one isn't used. The problem is the same if I cut the cable of (Atari STE-) pin 5 having it floating (Atari STE pin 6 still connected). However cutting 6 while having 5 still connected doesn't work. Does someone of you operate a Atari STE 520 with a Lotharek USB floppy drive emulator as external FDD? Is this possible, or is there a funky bug? Has anybody an idea what I am doing wrong? PS: Of Orbital Destroyer I have the actual 3.5 inch and I am going to put it to SPS tonight =) With kind regards Ben

Hi, I am looking for the(TI) DISKMANAGER-3 (DM3) on FloppyDisk (.DSK or .HFE) I mean this version which looks identically to the classic DM2-cartridge. (I think, once it was planned as new the version for the TI´s DD-Controller) I have this well-known "beta" as BIN, but I need a DSK-Version. Is there anybody out there who has it or knows about ? Thanks xXx
