So, being in a somewhat emulation mood (the recent discussion on the community edition FPGA project brought that on I guess), I came across this: The corresponding GIT repo is here: https://github.com/DnCraptor/atari800 The project originated in the ZX Spectrum world it seems, and this particular board is a "you-can-choose-from-many-options" kind, my immediate thought was - why not make a totally cut down version with just HDMI, SD card, and the keyboard input taken from USB instead of PS/2 (I don't have one, nor I really want to buy one TBH). Looking at the different schematics and glancing at the source code, I figured OK, to bench test it, I just need a DVI/HDMI breakout board, SD card reader module, an OTG USB cable, and a Pico. And endless hours making sure I can compile / mod the quoted project to work on this (with the main two differences being going from PS/2 to USB for keyboard/controllers, and feeding audio into HDMI, the latter apparently possible, seen some mentioning of this for the ZX project, though from what I gather not done on the 800 port). The snag I came across is that it also uses an SPI SRAM chip, which is an option on the original Murmulator, but for the Atari 800 version a requirement (not a surprising one either). It uses something named ESP-PSRAM32, which seems to be (a) deprecated, (b) sourcable only on AliExpress, (c) not breadboard friendly due to being only SMD. There is a newer chip, 64MBit sized, but also not being sold on every corner. This one thing blocked my enthusiasm somewhat, I looked at alternatives, but the widely available ICs are (a) much smaller in size, (b) (much) slower in terms of acceptable frequency. This ESP-PSRAM32 thing is certainly solvable, but now I look at ordering things that will take month+ to arrive, and either bodging a cable based breakout board, or praying that some that I have left from many years ago for some automotive chip I once had to use are going to be the right size and that I would be able to locate them 😕 Anyhow, just a thought. Zaxon says in the YT video comments he is not getting into mass production, but maybe we can...

Hi, I'm pleased to release the first version of Magnavody, an emulator/simulator for the Magnavox Odyssey. Odyssey was the very first home video game console. It languishes in obscurity but it deserves a big re-evaluation imo. Why? 1. Kooky dial devices for a unique gaming experience 2. Weirdly contemporary game design philosophy combing table top gaming with electronic mini games 3. Fabulous internal design (the "cartridge" system is bonkers cool) 28 games were made for it between 1972-75 and there are a smattering of homebrew games made since 2009 It's hard to use physically and takes a different mindset. However once you "get it", it is very rewarding. The aims of this emulator (and simulator): Accuracy, authenticity, accessibility and fun At the moment it only imperfectly plays "Table Tennis" (the first game) but I have special plans for overlays and homebrew. If you know anything about the pin connections on Odyssey let me know! Thanks!

Announcing Bobbin v0.4, an Apple Emulator. Why Yet Another Emulator? What does Bobbin do that Nintendon’t? Bobbin: Runs entirely in your terminal, using either standard input/output, or a curses screen display Can be used in shell scripts to accept typed text from standard input, and emit program output to standard output Can watch a program binary file for changes, and reload itself with the new program binary when it does, greatly accelerating development cycles for software on the 8-bit Apple Get it at https://github.com/micahcowan/bobbin/releases/tag/v0.4 Bobbin is distributed in source form only; you must be comfortable building software via ./configure && make && make install. I will not make myself available to help you build and install (unless it’s due to a bug). You also really want to have ncurses installed, unless you only want to use the standard input/output interface (no screen representation). Bobbin is written in C for modern, standards-conformant Unix OSes. It is tested on MacOS Ventura, and on Ubuntu Linux running under Windows WSL. Here are a couple of videos (of older versions) in action, demonstrating some key features:

After spending sometime with the gang over at the Atari VCS discord server, I thought I will let the fine people at Atari Age know about it too. I was inspired, and created a way to run Retropie on the Atari VCS. So I created a USB Key both 32GB and 64GB that runs independent, no installing or configuring the system. Once you tell the VCS to boot of the USB key it runs Linux Mint and retropie. Also, because the VCS is a computer, my keys work with almost every computer. If you want more information, I will post some links. First blog post about it. https://dadisajoke.com/blog/f/play-retro-games-on-any-pc My second blog post including a video on how it works. https://dadisajoke.com/blog/f/dadisajoke-retro-power-usb-ready-to-buy Here is the 32GB version on our store. https://dadisajoke.com/store/ols/products/dadisajoke-retro-power-lite-usb-32gb-thumb-drive Now here is the 64GB version. https://dadisajoke.com/store/ols/products/dadisajoke-retro-power-pro-usb-64gb-thumb-drive Please let me know if you have any questions.

I don't know if I should post this here or in the Emulation section..but anyway.. I am trying to figure out the FS-UAE emulator on my old MacBook Pro. (OS X 10.9) The emulator itself comes with a generic kickstart rom, and I have been able to get a few games to work, but they don't have sound. The emulator itself has sound, because I can hear the disk drive sounds when it is loading games. The games run fine, no lag at all, just no sound. But, when I load a Workbench disk, it takes like 5 minutes to load, and the emulator is super laggy, like it won't do anything when I click on the virtual desktop to get into BASIC and stuff.. My question is, if I spend the $$ for the KS Roms from Amiga Forever, will that help the Emulator run at it's full potential? Is it slow because of the generic KS ROM? And, if I did spend the cash for the KS Roms, and workbench disks and stuff, from Amiga Forever, how would I install them to FS-UAE? What file/folder to put them in? I do have VICE running the Commodore 64 with no problems at all on my MacBook, I also have Retroarch that runs perfect on that machine playing SNES games and crap like that with zero issues. Also, using WINE, Classic99 runs at full speed, zero issues...so I think the MacBook itself can do it...will the KS ROMS make the difference? Advise, please? And as always, Thank you for any and all advise..

I'm using ErgodoxEZ keyboard connected via usb and every time when I try typing something in the emulator (basic), my characters are getting lost in terms of that I need to press key multiple times to get a character on the screen. Is this a known issue or it's just my emulator config which is not tuned well enough to handle usb keyboards ? I'd appreciate if someone would post config here which is actually working to emulate 800xl. thanks !

Hello, I have a question regarding sprite layers in the Kega Fusion emulator. I believe you can toggle layers in a different emulator, znes or something like that, which means you could possibly turn off the HUD of some games... I am wondering if it's possible to do the same in Kega Fusion? I'm trying to achieve this, mainly turning off the HUD, as to gather some background footage of game play for a video. If not possible, or there any other methods of achieving this goal? Sorry if I didn't post in the right category, never been on a forum.

MAME 0.239 Did you think we’d let 2021 finish without a parting MAME release? MAME 0.239 is here, just in time for the new year. This release includes a fix for many subtle and not-so-subtle sound and music timing issues in games using Yamaha FM synthesis chips. The frame rate for Gaelco games has been adjusted to satisfy some wily protection checks, fixing crashes when continuing in Thunder Hoop and graphical issues in Squash. A big update for Philips CD-i emulation just made it in for this release, greatly improving the experience in a lot of games. Nintendo Famicom Disk System emulation has also seen some improvements this month. This release is packed with even more Soviet re-skins of the Game & Watch Egg program, the latest Apple II dumps and cracks, another batch of Commodore 64 cassettes, and more exotic NES and Famicom cartridges. Milan Galcik, who’s been busy with the Elektronika hand-held games, has also completed a Slovak UI translation and updated the neglected Czech translation. Both genuine and cloned Apple II systems have had emulation updates this month, with a number of unique VTech Laser and Franklin ACE features now supported, and performance improvements for the Apple IIgs. Of course, there’s lots more than we have time to talk about here, and you can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page. I’m looking for a handheld emulator like the one pictured. I’m looking for something that can play NES to Gameboy advanced games. I’ve found some very affordable ones on Amazon and eBay but wondering if anyone can recommend one. Also, from the reviews I have not found one that can save progress. Anyone sell or can recommend a good affordable one? It’s for my 8 year old son so I can load the roms but ideally would like one that does not need mapping and allow him to save progress. Any help or links would be great. Thanks!

Hi all I have recently finished my Atari Flashback Raspberry Pi conversion. I have based it on the look of the Atari 2600 Vader edition. This is an Atari Flashback 6 with a Raspberry Pi 3b+ inside with Retropie. I removed the Flashback buttons and replaced them with arcade style buttons. I used black snakeskin style vinyl wrap to cover the brown wood effect front panel. I removed the old Joystick ports and added USB ports. I cut a hole in the back to add an HDMI port. Another hole was cut to add a Micro SD card reader so I can easily remove the SD card without opening up the whole case. I wired the Pi board to the power button and a white power LED. Hot glue, super glue and lots of filing was used for the project. The Pi board is currently sitting loose in the case as not a lot of room to bolt it in, but it is very secure as it is. I have converted an Atari Flashback 7800 joystick to work via USB by using a convertor. Also connected, an 8Bitdo wireless controller. Just for effect......I messed around with a couple of "free" retro wallpaper backgrounds and stuck my Flashback in the middle, which came out well.

MAME 0.238 You know what time it is? It’s time for MAME 0.238, our November release! After many years of waiting, the rare space shooter Monster Zero from Nihon Game is now playable. Despite the title, this game does not feature a three-headed space dragon. This release adds support for Fowling and Monkey Goalkeeper, two more Elektronika hand-held games built around the Egg/Mickey Mouse Game & Watch program. There are a few changes to MAME’s UI and the debugger this month. Firstly, MAME is now less eager to reset your input configuration if you run it without connecting a game controller. Analog inputs support a few more configuration options, and we’ve added some (long overdue) documentation for the input configuration process. The timecode logging feature (used by people making gameplay videos) has been moved to a plugin, and debugger memory views now support octal data display, and octal or decimal address display. Support for several Famicom controllers has been added or fixed this month, including the IGS Tap-tap Mat, Bandai Family Trainer, Bandai Power Pad, Bandai Hyper Shot, Konami Doremikko Piano Keyboard, and Konami Exciting Boxing air bag. Also involving peripheral support, the Acorn Archimedes drivers now support podule expansions, the Econet module slot, serial/parallel ports, and extension ROM sockets. You can read about all the development activity this month in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page. Read the rest of this entry »

MAME 0.237 For everyone who’s waited patiently all month, MAME 0.237 is out today! As well as the updates to the UI and debugger that we’ve already announced, there are several updates to the included plugins: A brand-new input macro plugin. The data plugin can now show text from the Japanese command.dat file (or a Chinese command.txt file if you rename it to command.dat). The location the hiscore support plugin uses to store its data and configuration has changed. You won’t lose your high scores, but you need to move the .hi files from the hi folder to the hiscore folder in your plugin data (homepath) folder. The configuration format for the autofire plugin has changed. Unfortunately, you will need to add your autofire button settings again. Interesting machines added this month include a Mexican TRS-80 Color Computer clone, Tronica Thunder Ball (a re-skin of Space Rescue with a nautical theme), the original version of Pengo that the widespread bootlegs seem to be based on, the original hardware revision of the Laser 128 (Apple II clone), and a slightly older version of Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha for Asia. Master of multi-memory controllers kmg is still on a roll broadening NES/Famicom and clone cartridge compatibility. Highlights of the month include: Railway management simulator A Ressha de Ikou. Recent NES/Famicom games released by Ancient to promote Gotta Protectors (Minna de Mamotte Knight). NES development is still alive over two decades after the last licensed title was released in 1995. The two Korean Brilliant Com (영재컴) edutainment games. Some multi-game cartridges featuring the ambitious Titenic game, inspired by a highly successful James Cameron film. Kart Fighter – using the engine from an unlicensed NES port of Street Fighter II, and unlicensed depictions of the character roster from Super Mario Kart, this is almost a premonition of Super Smash Bros. It even features Yoshi’s tail smash, and depicts Kinopio (Toad) as a bare-knuckle brawler long before the Mii costume was available for purchase. Well-known low-effort Mario-themed hack 7 Grand Dad. PUSH ↑ START BUTTON. GET ADDITION GAME. AND NOURISH THE BLOOD Amiga software compatibility has been improved this month, the NEC PC-6001 family has gained a cartridge software list, and another batch of Commodore 64 cassettes has been added. An issue was identified with “fake E7” Apple II cracks that could prevent them from working if they were written out to disks to use on original hardware. Although this didn’t prevent them from being used in MAME, disk images with the issue fixed have been added to the software list. Over a hundred Apple IIgs cracks have been added, too. You can read about all the exciting developments this month in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello. Im interested in primarily racing games. Im new to emulators and all the pies out there. From what ive learned so far. I have lowered my expectations and narrowed down my goals i guess you can say. im looking for some insight and direction on what emulator specs i should not live without. If trying to use an emulator that will run racing games old as i can find and as new as ps1, xbox360 and psp. im under the impression that any newer than that i will need more money for a better emulator. thank you.

Hello there, After months, I'm still wanting to buy two Fairchild Channel F Model 2 controllers that are detachable and I can use those controllers on MAME. I could try getting the console itself but it's really expensive and the AC adapter is very, very old. Does anybody here have two spare Fairchild Channel F Model 2 controllers that I could buy? Please send me a PM if you have two spare controllers.

In case you missed MAMEdev's presentation at FOSDEM ’21 (FOSDEM - Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) on Saturday, February 6, 2021, last week MAMEdev uploaded the presentation that MAME's development and release manager Vas Crabb ("cuavas") contributed to MAMEdev's very own YouTube channel! (Don't worry, it’s not all that technical - Vas created the presentation to be approachable no matter the skill level or whether the viewer is new to MAME or not.) Thanks go to FOSDEM's organizers for a great weekend's worth of presentations embracing and supporting the open source community. Due to technical issues early on Saturday, the live Q&A was not recorded. Slides are available on FOSDEM's website. We've now also added a playlist where you can view most past presentations (CAX 2008, Summer Assembly 2009, Revision 2012, BalCCon2k15, CppCon 2016, Ekoparty 13 (2017), Ekoparty 14 (2018), FOSDEM '21) to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMof4txXwGz3g_WJOtsX3FlGq_KT7WCeg

Hello there! (Insert Obi wan meme here): I bought an Atari 800 XL for my older brother. Through the Atari800win PLUS emulator I created a program that is basically Jingle Bells with a words of greetings, this done in BASIC. I saved my program as TXT thanks to this thread:https://atariage.com/forums/topic/196715-saving-basic-programs-from-emulators/?do=findComment&comment=2503145 But now, what I want is to be able to load the program through a WAV that I am going to host on YouTube to make it run on the Atari. I have the audio jack cassette convert. I tried to transform the TXT with MAGOTRANS but when loading the program from my mobile device as WAV, it throws an exclamation mark on the blue loading screen. I think that the convertion is wrong. I require your help, this is a gift for my brother and Christmas is near. So, ¿How I can load a txt program to my Atari from a WAV audio? Regards.

I'm putting together a spinner mounted on an upside-down mouse (pillow block bearings with a knob), as I've seen describe here in the hardware gallery. It works well except I have to mount the whole thing on the side of the mouse where there's not much room. Is it possible to change Stella to use the mouse x-axis instead of the y-axis for the paddle? That would make a more natural position for the knob. I'm using Stella 6.0.1 on raspberry pi with retropi. thanks in advance. -Doug

So, time for another very quick release of Stella. It's been less than a month, but we decided to bump from version 6.3 to 6.4, since there were a few major bugs in the last release, and there are quite a few new features in this one. Anyway, here's the changelog: The R77 port will be ready soon, and will contain some nice new features as well. We will update the thread when that happens. As usual, Stella can be downloaded at https://stella-emu.github.io/downloads.html, and donations are appreciated at https://stella-emu.github.io/donations.html. Bug reports can be done here, or preferably by creating a Github issue at https://github.com/stella-emu/stella/issues.

So, it's time for another release of Stella. This one has a few bugfixes reported in the 6.2 thread, as well as some feature requests too. And a few new features here and there. Changelog as follows: As usual, Stella can be downloaded from https://stella-emu.github.io/downloads.html, and donations are welcome at https://stella-emu.github.io/donations.html. Bugs can be reported here, but ideally on Github at https://github.com/stella-emu/stella/issues. Have fun.

This is a neat device that emulates 1-2 ST506/ST412 or other MFM hard disks for reading and or writing. Can be used to pull data off disks or to emulate disks for that old computer you don't have drives for. I think I read somewhere it can be passed thru to a VM. Possibly this could work for MAME/MESS emulated systems? TI-99 has been tested with the system and works for reading WDS-100 disks. Emulation works for reading, but writing fails this point. Probably have to be patched for the TI/Myarc sector layouts, directory structure, bitmaps, etc. (not enough info yet to correct, it says), but the actual writing appears to work. Works with a wide variety of other systems. List here: http://www.pdp8online.com/mfm/status.shtml There is a group buy under way right now if you want to check it out. Pricing seems reasonable. http://www.pdp8online.com/mfm/ Emulator uses a BeagleBone Black/BeagleBone Green Wireless for the actual processing. Interesting. Go team, TI! ?
