  1. Wonder Boy clone for Intellivision Hello everyone! Allow me to present myself: My name is Oscar Kenneth, I develop retro videogames for a living, most of them for 8 bit systems. Without wasting any time I started reading the book and I made my first game for intellivision. It is a practice project, just to get comfortable with intybasic as I prepare for bigger projects, but I think some of you might be interested in it; Thio's Odissey is a Wonder Boy clone (shamelessly similar in some aspects) but with my personal touch and also redesigning the game for the intellivision hardware capabilities. The game runs with smooth scroll at 60 FPS without any frame loss on any Intellivision machine without upgrades or extensions of any kind. Here you have a youtube video, but I must warn you the frame rate of the video is horrible. I haven't been able to record a video at 60 fps. Finally, you can download and try a small playable demo of 2 random stages here: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=06841938343237182179 If you use an emulator, you will need the usual bios files: exec.bin and grom.bin. Some emulators have different issues with this (and many other) game/s: -jzintv works fine, but in some pc's or android devices, vsynk doesn't work thus showing tearing and also skipping frames at random. It works perfectly on the raspberry pi 3 and some pc systems with perfect scroll and no frame loss nor tearing. -bliss2 works fine, it might show some small vsynk problems with the scroll in some systems. -Nostalgia 4 works fine, with nice vsynk but the life bar shows a glitch when the scroll advances every 8 pixels. -Nostalgia 5 shows lots of graphical glitches. Not playable. If you use a real intellivision, you just need a flash card with at least 64k of flash memory. PLEASE NOTE: Those 2 first levels are not meant to be the real first 2 levels since those are too difficult to be the first ones, but I did put those on this demo so it lasts longer (not only 5 minutes) and presents a challenge. The game hasn't been tested yet on a real intellivision so I really don't know how far the compatibility goes, but it is a matter of fine tuning only. Also, the buttons I defined for the actions might not be the correct/usual ones. I can change that in a matter of seconds, so no big deal! Finally, if someone feels offended because the game resembles Wonder Boy too much, I can modify those graphics that are too similar in a matter of 2 hours, so no big deal either! I just made the game look this way because I thought it would be cool to see something similar to Wonder boy on intellivision, but I have no problem whatsoever on modifying those graphics that I made as similar as possible to the "real thing" on propose. The rest of the game (bgm’s, maps, etc) is not intended to be identical to the original wonder boy, so don't expect a port/downgrade. It is a clone. If you are still reading (congratulations!) I would love for you to give me your feedback and let me know what did you like and what did you not, etc. If there is enough interest in this game I might look for a way to publish it in cartridge version. I've got a new discovery of a special joystick that can get digital control games on the Atari 2600 and 5200 like Asteroids (2600), Gravitar (2600), Meteorites(5200), and Star Trek (2600 & 5200) to be more analog for fine-tuning the placement of your shots. This can also be helpful on The Earth Dies Screaming and Wizard of War. On the flip side this variance in movement of your onscreen character may not be such a good idea in certain digital games because it may slow you down when you need to always be full-steam-ahead (ie. PacMan, Dig Dug, Frogger, Q-bert, etc...). But on the certain digital-control games which require specific shot placement or character placement, it's going to enhance your control. I am really excited to tell you that Gravitar is especially awesome with this new method of control. I have yet to try Pitfall or Pitfall II with this method, but I can imagine there'd be a benefit with them as well. So I'd like to go over the details of how to set this up on the 2600. First you will need an original Playstation flightstick made by Madcatz. This controller has a switch to enable digital or 'pulse' digital control. The latter mode is similar to what is offered by the Atari Trakball for the 2600 and Atari 8 bit computers when it's in joystick mode. It delivers pulses when making smaller movements to slow things down a bit. In other words, it gives a pseudo-analog movement of your character/ship. To get it to work on the 2600, you'll need the following adapters between the 2600 and the flightstick: 1) Best Electronics Sega Genesis controllers to Atari Systems Adapter cable (Source: Best Electronics- call their 800 number to order) 2) A Tototek Joypad Converter (Version MD). This allows Playstation controllers to work on a 9 pin port of a Sega Genesis. (Source: Tototek website) Alternate method: 1) Buy a hard to find adapter made by Innovation that converts Playstation controllers to 15 pin PC gameports called the Smartjoy Emulator Adapter.   4. Hi, I'm new here. I am interested in creating a simple 2 player fighting game similar to Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. I was wondering before I started coding, how feasible this would be due to the VCS's hardware limitations. I have been reading Andrew Davies tutorial series on the forum as well as have some knowledge of 6502 and M68000 assembly.

  11. The Atari 2600 is still getting new 2600 games well into this new Millennium. If you can only have 2 and only 2 Homebrew Games what are your top 2 games. What are your top 2 must own hombrews and why? Feel free to battle it out below for why your 2 are the 2 games.
  12. ​Last week, Eric dug deep in his attic and found boxes of Atari stuff that has been hidden away for 30 years! Included were hundreds of pages of hand-written A/W/A game notes, more correspondence with Atari 8-bit magazines, and some 5 1/4" floppies that were still usable after all these years. One of the disks was really warped and unreadable, but Eric had to perform disk surgery to extract the media from within the protective disk cover and insert it into another disk that wasn't quite so warped. We had to wait for a serial to USB cable to arrive so we could use our old SIO2PC to dump the games. I have updated the document covering the Anschuetz/Weisgerber/Anschuetz 1980's game development. I have added a change history so you can see what new sections have been added. There is quite a bit of new stuff, some related to the newly discovered games we uncovered in the attic boxes. I have also attached a separate game development notes document that has scans of hundreds of pages of game development notes, code, and bit-mapped graphics. These are organized by game so you can compare the development notes to how the games turned out in the other document. I have also attached a zip file with 3 ATR self-booting BASIC disks with 3 games that were found on Side B of some of the 30 year-old-disks. These games are Phoenix, Piracy, and Ramses' Revenge. Ramses' Revenge is really worth taking a look at. It takes a minute to initialize, and is meant for two players, but it can also be played with one player (you'll just always win!). These three games were some of the very first that we wrote within a couple months after getting our Atari 400 and teaching ourselves BASIC in 1982. Phoenix was literally our first game and was written within a couple weeks of getting our computer while trying to learn to program. Hopefully you'll enjoy taking a look at this peek back into the history of Atari BASIC game development from the 1980's!   13. Hello everyone, been working on a Apshai for the 2600 game for a few months now. Based off the classic Gateway to Apshai EPYX game. Except for bug fixes, this will be the last beta release, it's basically the game without the final level 40 boss fight. This is the endless dungeon version. Changed a bunch of stuff and fixed a bunch of bugs. Still have a few more bugs to iron out but it is playable. I do plan to release carts for the final version hopefully in the next few months.   14. Hey all, A little under a year ago my friend and I were working on developing a game using TI Extended BASIC, a nano PEB and Barry Boone's speedy loading speech synthesis disk code. Unfortunately the best working build of ours got corrupted and we were pretty discouraged from continuing. We've moved onto other things, but I managed to find a bunch of the files scattered on different locations across my computer and decided to compile all of the footage into one place. The video is just any material that we had used before we gave up. We're thinking about making a similar game using something that's easier to program on than a TI99/4a ahaha. Here's the link if you want to watch it: LIIINNKK The footage is recorded using a capture card from my real TI, no emulators. We coded a lot of it on the TI itself until we realized how much easier it was to code on a modern computer then upload the code using the nano PEB. I just wanted to share our progress with someone and I figured someone on here might appreciate some of the work we put in (hence why the video is unlisted). Don't feel like you have to watch the whole video, it's pretty long, I just wanted to put everything that we had done into it. We won't be pursuing this project any further, I just didn't want our progress to be lost to time. Thanks!

The game is heavily inspired by the TV Show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", including gameplay, visuals and audio.   18. This is very early version of my first Atari 2600 game. It is is intended be more feature filled than the Blackjack game released by Atari. My goals are accurate casino play, higher quality graphics, and supporting a true multi-deck shoe without dealing duplicate cards. Why am I making this game? I like Blackjack, and I don't like the official Atari version. The Atari 2600 is the reason I became a programmer, so I'm somewhat fond of the 2600 and 6502 programming. I made an attempt in 2008 with a different game concept, but I didn't have the time to work on it. I had accepted a new job that kept me extremely busy. The joystick controls are simple: Press down to HIT. Press up to STAY. Press fire to begin a new game. Why Theta VIII? You're an unfortunate guest of the Hotel Royale on the planet Theta VIII. Roadmap This is a work in progress, so the features are very limited. The controls will evolve as features are added. The core game play appears to be working, but it's not well tested. The status bar at the bottom displays the player's score, dealer's score, and the current game state. Those will be removed in future revisions, but the status bar will show message prompts, chip totals, and win/loss status. I'm posting on my blog to stay off the forums for now. This version is way too early for game reviews. It's bare bones. I have to return to my other work for a while, so my rate of progress will slow down for a while. I hope I can have it complete after about a year. I have plans to add many more features and user interface touches. Here's a short list in order of descending priority (although they're all important): accurate casino game play with betting, double down, splitting (only 1 split planned), surrender, insurance, etc no duplication of cards (cards are unique by deck, rank, and suit) betting mechanics and player's chip management sound effects a 2nd player: paging left and right will switch between players. I gave up my original plan to show 3 hands on a single screen. It won't be practical. support for 1 deck with 75% penetration and up to 4 decks with less penetration improving UI feedback: getting rid of the ugly Hit/Stay/Win/Lose graphics; using the bottom status bar instead lots of game options and variations (such as dealer hits on soft 17, early or late surrender, color scheme, number of decks, etc) sprite animations more graphic touches Accurate game play is my number one priority. My goal is for card counting to actually work with a single player, 1 or 2 deck game, which requires that no duplicate cards can be dealt, random numbers must be unbiased, and the deck is dealt to a realistic depth of penetration (between 50% to 75%). Technical Details I've attached the binary and some screenshots, but not the source. I'll attach the source after I've rewritten a few messy subroutines. I'm somewhat inexperienced with 6502 assembly, so there's lots of room for optimizing the code (and data). Let me know if you find any bugs or inconsistent scan line counts. I'm rendering at 262 lines. When I release the source, I hope to get some tips on better assembly programming. Until then I just really like solving problems on my own. The only problem I've been unable to solve so far is I couldn't get the joystick latches to work. I had to write my own latch logic, but I'd prefer to use the hardware latches to free up some space. You're probably wondering how I'm storing 4 decks in 128 bytes. Well, I'm not. I'm storing the cards in play (meaning they're dealt to an active hand) in a packed format. I'm currently using this format: ; Card: Single packed; deck suit rank; Bits: 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0;; Rank: 0-13 = ranks Ace through King; 14-15 = unused The discard pile is a different situation from the active cards in play. I'm currently not storing discards. Cards shifted off screen are summed into a total, which doesn't work for preventing duplicates. A combination of strategies is what's going to work. The discard pile doesn't require knowing who has which card. It only needs to know which card is available to deal, so I could use a bitmap. Four decks contains 208 cards. If one card is one bit, then the entire 4-deck shoe can be stored in an array of 26 bytes. ; Cards 0 to 8 : 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0; Cards 9 to 16 : 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0; Cards 17 to 24 : 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0; Cards 25 to 32 : 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0; Cards 33 to 40 : 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0; ... The average hand consumes about 4 to 6 cards, so the RAM usage is low for the average case. The trouble is dealing with worst case scenarios, which could deal 20 or more cards to a single player given multiple decks and splitting hands. The worst case contains all the lowest valued cards for both the player's and dealer's hands. I have to balance the worst case scenario of active cards in play with the format for the discard pile. If I don't go with the bitmap, then I'll have to settle for implementing a circular buffer for storing the discards. It will truncate the card history, but would only affect a very small percentage of hands. I currently have about 45 bytes of RAM free. I'm wasteful with RAM, so I have some easy optimizations to make for freeing up space. This version represents the culmination of about 1 month's work so far. I spent a week rewriting code that wasn't going to work, and then spent another 2 weeks goofing around with writing my own horizontal and vertical positioning algorithms. In the end I just ended up just using the divide by 15 method. Heh. Heh. SkipDraw is not used, because the vertical positioning in this game is trivial. Nothing moves and everything is divided into fixed size rows. Hardware Testing The game is completely untested on hardware, because I don't have a Harmony cart. I'll get one sooner or later.

Ok so i have been working on a variation to this thread http://atariage.com/forums/topic/231131-flashback-to-colecovision-controller/?hl=%2Bflashback&do=findComment&comment=3805492 i have gone through and fixed the issues with the code pasted in the above link and rewritten it to allow a jaguar joypad to be used the current working prototype runs using every usabe IOpi on an atmga328p-pu microcontroller using its internal 8hz clock before i would decide where i should go from here i would like some feedback i cant add any more functionality using this processor becuase it is being fully used, so say if i wanted to add 2 players it would mean using another processor of the same settup to control joypad 2 an option would be to use at atmega 2560 which has many more pins that could be used. unfortunately this is a surface mount chip so it i a bit of a pain to make your own boards with it attached especially for prototypes i have hopfully attached a poll to this for everyone to provide some feedback before i decide what to do next
