I have bought 2 systems in the last year and the controllers are always trash. They just stutter and don't respond consistently to disc presses and I want a system that actually works. I don't like the flashback controllers, already tried that adapter also. Looking for a system with perfect controllers or a way to make my controllers perfect! Thanks.

Is it possible to fasten this female into shielding like it originally was? It seems to have slipped out everytime I put in a coaxial. Otherwise it is fine. I have no clue how it originally was.

Can the Power supply I have pictured work with my Intellivision 2 console? When I power the console on with the biggest sleeved adapter all I get is snow and lines. When I wiggle the adapter the console shuts off. I set the adapter to 12v and positive polarity. I also cleaned the games I was using. The consoles is hooked up to the television with a Atari 7800 cable going into a coax adapter on my tv.

I have been picking up Atari 2600 games for a little while, but only recently got a Retron 77 to play them with. I am running Stella 6 Beta. While at a used game store the other day, I grabbed what I thought was a 2600 cartridge. The clerk told me it was actually an Intellivision cartridge. I know many Intellivision carts have an angled top with a label, and he said to look for a Mattel copyright to tell the difference. I had one cart like that at home, and assumed I bought an Intellivision game by mistake. After I hooked up my Retron 77, I looked at the cartridge (Dark Chambers) and it looked as if it was compatible. I put it in, and it worked. I know the 2600 was not compatible with Intellivision games, and I can't find anything about the Retron 77 or Stella 6 being able to run them. I also am having a lot of trouble finding images of the connecting side of Intellivision carts. I can only assume this was a game made by Mattel for the 2600, but can anyone tell me the best way to determine the difference going forward. Thanks.

Several months ago, Bill Fisher found among his stuff (in his attic), a T-Card of Space Spartans that is a build of Space Spartans at the time it was handed over to Bill and I, after Mike Minkoff had started to look at what Brian Dougherty had been developing when he left the company. As you can see (I think), there are lots of things different about this version, as well as lots of stuff which don't work at all yet. But I will let you guys draw your own conclusions. Lathe26 ripped this rom earlier this year when I was in Seattle visiting my son, so I hope it is in a format that is easily usable for the standard emulators. SpaceSpartansDougherty.zip

Lately been on a bit of a "FIX ALL THE THINGS!" kick, and recently restored a system that had a bad RA-3-9600 RAM chip and replaced the system's RF modulator to get a pretty nice system back up and running. I traded this for a non-working system that was a bit scruffy (one controller cord was RIPPED from the controller!) as part of a deal that resulted in a restored-to-working-order Bally Astrocade. Anyhow, while restoring the system that eventually was sent off as a 'thank you', I harvested the RAM from a bare 'sarcophagus' system that I got 20 years ago really cheap and dug out of its tomb in the garage. That board was 'BSOD' but the RAM tested as good. (Thanks for that SRAM test program, @intvnut!) With the trade-in system I received, the controller repair was just a mechanical job (the cord is 3" shorter now, and some bad traces on the controller matrix have been fixed). But the system itself was also BSOD - with some occasional nice pastel colors, light blue, sometimes green, sometimes purple. Once even a bunch of characters and other data appeared on the TV. Systematically testing each chip, the most likely suspects all tested fine... SRAM, STIC, CPU, and the color chip. Finally, it go to the point of … what the heck, check the EXEC. Wouldn't you know, the RA-3-9502-11 that was in the system, when placed in my test bed, would not boot! The fun part though, is that if you left everything powered on for a few minutes and then cycled power, it all worked, and the MTE-201 passes with flying colors! If you let things cool down, the behavior repeats. Since this reminded me of the other "dead" bare-bones mainboard-only system that just sacrificed its SRAM, I popped its corresponding part of the EXEC -- and saw very similar behavior! This one also tested out as "good" after "warming up" a short time. Putting a "known good" RO-3-9502-11 into the newly arrived system cures its ills, and it works! All of this finally leads up to the question: Are the EXEC chips more prone to failure than some of the others? Based on the chip documentation, it seems this one in particular is critical for the boot process to work properly. In my test cases, in which all the socketed chips are 'Known Good' and this particular one (the 'DUT') is bad, it usually manifests as a black screen, somewhat frequently as a screen showing only one color, occasionally changing from black to one solid color, and rarely as "garbled" (typically a bunch of GROM characters). Not sure if this is useful to any other troubleshooters, or perhaps this is already on the list.

Been going on a bit of a repair kick lately and got myself into a bit of trouble / mystery. Way back in the olden days, I got a catalog in the mail from some outfit named INTV Corporation. I ordered an INTV System III from them - so I could have my very own Intellivision to haul off to college! In the ensuing years, that system has gone through quite a lot, even tolerating my "repairs". One time when opening it (another story there, let's just say it needed fixing), I essentially destroyed the ribbon cable connecting the power board to the main board. I hacked together an absolutely horrible solution, and so it stayed for the past 15 years or so. I started using different systems as "daily drivers". I finally decided to remedy the hacky repair, because the system was unstable due to … shall we say … some extremely bad work on my part. At the time I did the "repair" I damaged the traces on the power board where the ribbon cable used to be, and age has not been kind to that board. (In my defense, I did the repair using materials at hand and a soldering gun -- yeah, that was fun!) OK, backstory done. Let's move to today: I removed the mess from the old "repair" and put in something more tidy and less prone to accidental grounding-of-things-that-should-not-be-grounded. However, the damage done so many years back must have caused more issues. The system seemed to work -- until I closed it all up. More investigation revealed further connectivity problems due to damaged traces. So, I reworked the connections again. More stress on an already compromised board... Now, I still have a really bad multimeter. If you're curious, it's this one. So while I can say the voltages on the connector pins are "ballpark", I can't say with any confidence that they are "in spec". Here's the weirdness: One controller does not work. (the right controller). But only with this power board. If I connect a different power board, both controllers work just fine. With this super duper hacky-fixed-up power board, only the left controller works. Using the 4.1 test cart, the chips all pass tests, etc. but I get zero response from the right controller... Swapping back to the brand new power board, everything works just fine. Ideas? I'd like to keep the original parts intact - hacked up damage and all - if possible. Plus it's useful to have a functioning, separate power board available for testing things like this.

In some stuff we got from David Chandler's estate, there was a videotape from December, 1981, that appears to be test video of the Super-STIC, which Keith had indicated entered development in 1982. I guess that story isn't completely right.

Just wondering if these parts commonly go on a intv model 1. Mine works but the board is black. It's the two black parts. Just want to know in case I have to order parts in the future.

The attached image is from an INTV catalog. Was the Intellivision released by INTV with the blank lower faceplate as shown here? I have only seen the Super Pro and INTV System III faceplates there. I now have both the Super Pro and INTV System III versions, as well as Sears, Sylvania, Tandy, Mattel for the 2609 and the Intellivision II with and without the red stripe. Are there any other US varieties of the console? (I also have a Bandai system on the way).

Just curious on this topic. I recently purchased a Sears SVA unit from an AA member, and shortly after, another one on eBay. I immediately noticed there was a difference in the gold color of the controllers, on/off switch and reset button between the two units. I took out a third SSVA unit I had, sure enough there was. That one was more silver in color than the other two. All three of these units are original to my best knowledge. Moving on to the Mattel unit, then the Sylvania and finally my Tandy unit. The Sylvania has a very metallic/silver look. The Tandy is more gold shaded, with the Mattel being close to the same. Whereas the Sears units actually look more gold in color, but different shades between production years. Was this the case with these models, all being sold under different labels, or am I just seeing things? If there are color variations in the controllers, what years are the deepest color gold? I would think first generation models? More fun INTV triva...? Thanks for the clarification. JR

Hi there, I am trying to get a controller to work properly. I cut the cord and attempted to solder the wires on to the connector and being inexperienced I didn't do a very good job. Any way to fix this problem any easier?

Hello all! As some of you know, Braxton Soderman and I (Tom Boellstorff) are hard at work on our book about Intellivision (and having a wonderful time with it). I've recently run into a wall looking for a document and wanted to see if any of you could leverage your superpower sleuthing skills on our behalf. In February, 1982 a report “The Video Game Industry” was issued by an analyst at Goldman Sachs named Richard Simon. I'm going to keep trying to find someone at Goldman who would be willing to help track down this 37-year-old report that can't possibly be of use to them now lol. But given that the report was quoted in PlayThings, the New York Times, etc., some copies of it must have been distributed to some folks in the industry. It might be lost forever, which would be a shame, but I'm going to keep trying on my part. But if anyone out there can find a copy of this, we'll be more than happy to thank you in the acknowledgments to our book (if you would like that, screen name or regular name lol).
