Usage notes. Usage notes and titles list in this document were compiled from various posts. Super Vectrex Multicart (SVM) Usage Notes: Super Vectrex Multicart title selection functionality as used with the Vectrex Reset button. SVM supports a feature to use the Vectrex front panel "Reset" button in two different ways. A quick press. Or a long (greater than 1 second) press. Using the quick press feature of the Reset button will result in restarting the currently selected ROM title. Using the long press feature of the Reset button will result in returning to the SVM Main Menu allowing for selecting of a different ROM title. Some of the ROMs in the titles list are a multiple game title ROM in themselves. (e.g.: All Good Things.) After selecting the ROM the player will be presented with the title's menu inside the ROM for choosing other individual games inside the ROM. Some of the ROMs below require accessory hardware in order to start and use the title. Such as a Vectrex 3D Imager, Light Pen, or third party spinner controller. All "3D" ROM titles requiring the Vectrex 3D Imager will show a blank display after starting the game without the 3D Imager attached. (e.g.: "3D Crazy Coaster", 3D MineStorm", etc.) This is expected and normal operation for a 3D title. To see game play graphics displayed plug a 3D Imager into Vectrex Controller Port 2. All ROMs requiring the Vectrex Light Pen (LightPen) will provide only limited usage after starting the title without the Light Pen attached. (e.g.: "Art Master", "Mail Plane", etc.) The title will start and the game can be selected. But actions needing the Light Pen will be unavailable. (e.g.: In Mail Plane game play destination selection and package loading cannot be accomplished.) Original era and homebrew ROMs requiring extra RAM on the printed circuit board (PCB) are not supported by the Super Vectrex Multicart. No RAM exists on the SVM PCB. Those titles are not included on the SVM. (e.g.: "Animaction") Extra RAM was not included on the SVM PCB to keep the sale price as low as possible. All titles in the list noted with "(IL)" are a modified version of the title with infinite lives for use by the player. All titles in the list noted with "(Invincibility)" are a modified version of the title where the player cannot be hit and killed. All titles in the list noted with "(Level Select)" are a modified version of the title where the player can choose the starting level. All titles in the list noted with "(Spinner)" are a modified version of the title enabled to use a spinner controller. Usually in controller port 2. All titles in the list noted with "(Button)" are a modified version of the title enabled to use a the controller's buttons to control player movement. He suggested that a group buy might bring down the shipping cost and make the final price little more bearable. I thought I would ask here as this is the greatest concentration of occidental Tutorians I know.   5. Hi All, I got a Raspberry pi pico a few weeks ago to have a play with and forgot about it. Then, after noticing a post here, I realised I couldn't resist having a go at using it to make a multicart for the Atari 8-bit. A couple of PCB revisions later, I'm pretty much done, and proud to announce the A8PicoCart! Unfortunately the official Pico board hasn't got quite enough pins to make a proper multicart - you can emulate 8k and 16k carts, but that's about it. However I discovered that you can buy £3 purple Pico clones from China with 16Megs of flash, USB C and, more importantly, all the GPIO pins broken out, which is just enough to hook up the whole cartridge port. So I've made an Atari 2600 multicart with the official Pico, and an A8 multicart with the purple Pico clone 🙂 (If you are interested in the 2600 version - I posted earlier today about it here). Neither cart has any other components other than a Pico board and the PCB - so this will be a very easy DIY build. Although the RP2040 used in the Pico is not formally 5V tolerant, it is rumoured that the non-ADC pins are, so I've used these, and hoped for the best. No problems so far after many hours of testing firmware versions! I wanted to go for an easy build, so wanted to avoid extra components. The firmware is a purple themed tweaked version of the original UnoCart firmware, though I've added the 4 extra cartridge types recently added to the Ultimate Cart firmware. As there is no SD card, I've also written support to make the cartridge a USB mass storage device, so you can simply plug the cartridge into a PC with a USB cable and copy files over. This provides 15Megs of flash storage onboard for ROMs and ATRs. Oh, and its also very easy to update the firmware on a Pico - just plug into USB with the BOOTSEL button pressed and drag a file onto the device. There are 2 versions of the PCB at present - one with the Pico facing forwards so the status LED can be seen, intended for uncased use on an XE. The other has the Pico facing away so it will fit in a case and there are mounting holes to assist. At some point I will design a 3D printed case for it. As usual I've got a load of spare PCBs, so if anybody wants an assembled board to help me test, get in touch? Hi All, I thought it was time to post about my latest mini-project - I've ported my original UnoCart 2600 code to run on a Raspberry Pi Pico which is a very low cost (£2-£4) ARM based microcontroller board from the Raspberry Pi Foundation in the UK. The idea is to make a very low cost (<£5) DIY multicart project, which really just involves soldering a pico to a PCB - there are no other components. In theory the pico requires voltage level shifters to connect to the 5V atari bus, but there are rumours to the effect that most of the GPIO pins are 5V tolerant (and in practice others have not encountered problems to date), so I've skipped them on the basis that this is supposed to be cheap and cheerful. I've been running it for many hours so far without problems, but your mileage may vary. There is no SD card slot - the Pico has a 2Megs of flash, so I've written code to expose it as a mass-storage device when plugged into USB. In practice that means you can plug it into your PC with a USB cable and drag and drop files directly onto the cart from Windows. The 1meg of flash allocated to ROMs is in practice enough to fit all my favourite stuff and more. The PCB supports both the cheaper castellated edge pico version which can be soldered directly to the board surface mount style, or the Pico H with headers. The firmware is basically the UnoCart 2600 firmware, and I haven't finished porting all the cartridge emulation code yet, but it basically seems to work great, though I do get a noticeable amount of RF interference on the TV compared to the original unocart - I'm waiting for some new PCBs to arrive from China that will hopefully improve matters there. The new PCBs will also have mounting holes, and a PAL/NTSC solder bridge for selecting the firmware. When I've finished the firmware, if anybody wants a finished cart to help me do a bit of testing? Initial Prototype Version 1 PCB Pico-themed green firmware (Pal) Atari XL/XE Version I've also made an Atari 8-bit version using a purple 16Meg Pico clone that has more GPIO pins than the original Pico (the Atari 8-bit cartridge port has slightly too many signal lines to interface to the original pico). I'll post about that in the 8-bit section seperately.
  7. Updated 2022-12-30: The board works! Only GROM support tested so far. Original message: I have several Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller boards which I find quite adorable as they are very affordable, in some respects very powerful and in other respects not too much so. Nevertheless I have been playing around with them for a while and trying various things, I built a prototype eurorack synthesiser sequencer with one for example. I've also used them with some boards I bought from Pimoroni to drive VGA screens and DVI monitors. In the last pandemic call which I participated (I guess around a week and a half ago) we also talked about them. Anyway it was high time for me to get one connected to a TI-99/4A. I know that other folks such as @arcadeshopper and @jedimatt42 have also contemplated the same idea. Perhaps someone has already done it, but if so I'm not aware of it and anyway making boards is fun when there is time for it. So I designed a prototype board and just submitted an order for them. I did not quite have enough time to really do this well, so I decided what the heck, let's see what happens with a quick design. It's a bit bulky, and will not fit into an ordinary cartridge case. This of course also means that I have no idea if this is going to work for sure, but of course I have reason to believe it will. It is not too different design-wise from the StrangeCart, except that the microcontroller is different. The RP2040 chip which powers the Raspberry Pi Pico is not 5V tolerant, so I threw in four 74LVC245 buffer chips and some other stuff. Since the board is large, I used some of the extra space to add a prototyping area, and I added breakouts for three SOT-23-5 footprints and two extra SOIC-8 footprints as well. One SOIC-8 footprint, U5, is fully connected to a SPI port and can serve as flash memory expansion or alternatively house a PSRAM (pseudo static RAM chip). As can be seen from the pictures, the buffers are through hole components, the idea being that if I get it to work and others are interested in these, it would be quite easy for people to build these. I don't like through hole resistors or capacitors, so I used 0805 sized surface mount parts for those. In my opinion they are easy to work with. The only slightly challenging part to solder for some could be the 74LVC1G125 buffer I put in to drive the GREADY signal. It can be replaced with a transistor circuit in the prototype area. To get quickly up to speed, I used FlashGROM99 board as the basis. I removed everything else except the outline, regulator and the edge connector and started from there, to have a basis for the design in Kicad. After placing the parts it became obvious it would be hard to make this fit inside a cartridge housing, so I just gave the board more space which made it easy to route the signals to the Raspberry Pi Pico. Now I just need to wait to get the boards and hope for the best during bringup...

I've been trying to make it work but didn't succeed for now ? So I need your help Do you think the empty chip slot on the cartridge board, which is actually empty, need to be populated? If so, with what ? The only trace connected to it seems to be the A12 rail which, if I understand well, is used to tell the VCS to use external ROMs... Thanks for any help !
  9. Have a multicard for the Magnavox Odyssey from @Boojakascha and @Mikebloke and got a handle for it from Laserbear. Took measurements and with the new handle, it's about 11cm x 9cm, and about 1.5 cm thick. I'm looking for a hard case or possibly a shock box to store it, ideally with a little bit of extra space, so I can line the case with antistatic plastic to protect the PCB Does anyone have any ideas on what the most similar cartridge would be in terms of size? (NES, SNES, Megadrive...?) Or if repurposing one of those wouldn't work, does anyone make custom cases that would fit it? Thanks!
  10. Hi friends, I recently bought this wonderful AtariMax SD Multicart, I would like to trade it with a fully working and in good shape Atari 5200 trak-ball (+Centipede bonus ?) . This Atarimax cart originally contains Beef Drop and Venture (which I will miss) and is loaded with the usual 5200 stuff. The reason I am selling it, imo it is taking a bit of the magic of taking out a cartridge from the box and inserting in the 5200. Note : I asked Steve of Atarimax, to send me the unit without the label on the cartridge so I make a custom one, but I never did. It will be shipped with the original label and stuff.

Last month I saw the following ad on eBay: I thought the appeal of this kit for homebrew development was very limited: No bankswitching/mapper (only 2K games or 4K games with further modifications on the board) It required messing around with UV lamps, programmers, etc Required some knowledge of electronics Buying the parts separately would probably be less expensive Not possible to ship as a product to customers It would be probably easier and faster to use one of the existing USB/SD carts to test on a real hardware. This did make me think though that I had never seen a development kit for the 2600 which would allow homebrewers without knowledge of electronics to self publish their games. If a mapper is required, then that knowledge need goes up real fast. As in Europe we have very limited offers of good homebrew games available (most of them are from the USA and shipping quickly becomes a problem), I thought about making this my next project. The idea is to have blank carts (populated with all required components but without any game image in them) and a simple to use cable and PC software which would allow the user to create a cart ready to be shipped to customers as well as test games in a real atari. Is this something that would interest the homebrew community? Here are some requirements I have come up with: The final product must cost under 10€ (populated cart PCB) All components must be easy to find. Preference should be given to components still in production Must be usable by people with no experience in electronics No soldering Must support mappers (the ones used by batari Basic at a minimum, as a lot of people seem to use bB) No physical alterations to select the desired mapper (or no mapper) Must fit in a standard Atari cartridge case Components should be SMD to keep production cost as low as possible All comments will be appreciated!!   14. Thought would post on here first to see if any interest before putting it on eBay. This is the French RCA Studio II clone the Victory. Complete with two joystick attachments (which I believe are unique to the Euro models ?) along with a multi-cart. The system powers on fine, but there is no AC adapter included in the sale. I cannot get a clean picture, I don’t know if this is down to the system or the fact I am trying to use a French system on a UK CRT TV. I am also including the multi cart containing RCA Studio II games, MPT-02 Roms and homebrew titles.   16. the Atari 2600 PlusCart ist based on Robin Edwards Unocart-2600 , and the extensions of DirtyHairy's fork. The PlusCart has no SD-Card, but an ESP8266 to connect to a local WiFi Network and the Internet. The PlusCart downloads the ROM-files from an Server in the Internet called the "PlusStore". The way this is done is similar to the way the Unocart-2600 loads ROMs from the FAT filesystem on the SD-card, while the VCS is performing a waitroutine in RAM. Additionally the PlusCart has one more interesting feature. It offers internet access to the ROM Developers, these functions are called "PlusROM". In the first bytes of a PlusROM the path and the backend hostname or IP address has to be encoded (as strings both terminated by '\0'). Sending and receiving bytes to the host does not need a waitroutine in the VCS RAM! At the moment the PlusROM functions can be used at 2K, 4K, 3F, 3E and 3E+ cartridges and any standard bankswitching cartridge with or without 128 bytes of RAM (@ 1000 to 10FF) and a 'Standard' F4 Bankswitching (@ 1FF4 to 1FFB).   22. Hi All, Some of you may know me from the Atari 8-bit forum - I've designed a couple of open-source multi-carts for the Atari 8-bit (the UnoCart and UltimateCart). The Atari 8-bit was my childhood home computer, but I picked up a 2600 jr on ebay at xmas, since I fondly remembered playing Combat on a friend's Atari VCS after school. However I thought it would be nice to play some other games and try some of the more recent homebrew creations, and so... Over the last couple of weeks, I've been busy building a version of the UnoCart for the Atari 2600 - The UnoCart-2600. The video below shows it in action (code from a week or so ago - I've renamed it since then!) Like the UnoCart, this is something you can build yourself with minimal soldering. It just requires an off-the-shelf STM32F4-DISCOVERY board, an SD-card breakout board, and a breakout board for the Atari 2600 cartridge slot. Everything can be hooked up with jumper wires. The source code, firmware, breakout-PCB design and (very rough) building instructions are on a new github page for the project: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UnoCart-2600 The cartridge successfully auto-detects and emulates pretty much all the ROM dumps available on AtariMania (with the exception of Pitfall II, since I'm not emulating the DSP stuff). So far, this has just been tested on my Atari 2600 jr - would anybody else be interested in building one and helping me find any remaining bugs in the cartridge emulation? I've got a few cartridge breakout PCBs spare, since that is the only part that is hard to obtain. PM me if interested? Robin
  23. A few weeks ago I was testing and comparing all of the programs on Ken Lill's latest Ultimulti cartridge (version 3.0) against the listing of programs that he made for it. My method of testing the programs is to switch the cartridge's DIP switches while the machine is still on and then press the reset button on the console to bring up the new game. Sometimes, before I press reset, this causes some pretty weird effects on the TV screen. Most of the time this looks like garbage or a program crash (which, technically, is what is happening because I'm switching out part of the ROM while the program is actually running). On rare occasions, the crashes look a little artistic. Rarer still are programs that continue to run, but act very strangely. Take this weird mish-mash of both Treasure Cove and The Incredible Wizard; it's an insanely cool Treasure Cove title screen mixed in with the maze from The Incredible Wizard: This happened while I was switching from one game to the other. Note that that DIP switch positions have only one bit difference between them: Treasure Cove - DIPSwitch position $3B, or 00111011B to The Incredible Wizard - DIPSwitch position $33, or 00110011B I tried to duplicate this feat again with no luck. I want to mention that this unusual picture is not a fault of the UltiMulti cartridge. This results from normal operation of the Astrocade. This reminds me of the Atari 2600 technique of "frying" (turning the Atari system on and off very quickly) which can get some very strange, and sometimes predictable, results. Has anyone else seen strange effects like this? I'd love to see some pictures of other unusual occurrences. Adam
  24. Hi all - kind of new here. This is my 1st forum topic. Getting ready to go for this Atarimax Ultimate SD for the 5200. I guess I will ultimately figure it out, but weary of wasting {free} hours/days, which will translate into month(s) before I get it all figured out and can focus more on simply enjoying the games. I'm not finding a lot of how too info. on this stuff, and the Atarimax forum topics seeking help when problems do arise don't seem to get much attention. Anyway-Is my worry for naught? Is the finding and downloading games process pretty straight forward? Any other tips or guidance on best places to grab games (should I be saying ROMs??) or how to do it if/when I do get it? Not as clueless s I may be seeming, but I just don't have much interest in having a "can not open/access file"-type experience right now. I hope I got this out in a way that can be found by others here & Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. Also-If anyone has Sean Kelly or the like that they might be happy to part with in order to build funds to get their own Ultimate SD, I may be able to help towards that end. {but, I should note that I may move on this before the 7/27 deadline they currently have going, which could, but not necessarily, affect my interest in that regard} - Thanks again.
  25. Hi all, The original shell for my Ultimate Cart was a hacked Atari grey cart shell, which I spray painted blue. Unfortunately the paint has rubbed off a bit, and its now looking rather tatty. So, now that I've got a 3d printer of my very own, I decided to design a shell for the Ultimate Cart. Like the rest of the project, this shell is open-source. I've uploaded both the STL files and the design files (OpenSCAD) to the github site: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UltimateCart/ The shell should fit any PCBs produced using the board files on github. This should be most of the boards out there, with the exception of the redesign by Panos that he used for his later runs (but I think these came with nice shells anyway). If you're not sure, compare your board to the pictures on github - if the connectors and screw holes are in the same places, it should fit. The cart has been tested for fit in my 65XE, and 800XL. Flashjazzcat has been kind enough to test it for me in a XEGS, 800 and 1200XL, and reports it fits well. If you don't have access to a 3d printer, I'm happy to make a few of these for others. This would be using the same printer and filament colours (bronze & red) as the pictures above. The price would be £22 + P&P (£1 to UK, £3 elsewhere). Send me a PM if interested. Robin
