introducing... Pitfall: Strange New Worlds for the Atari 2600 what if... Pitfall had more than one map? what if... you could start on any screen you wanted? welcome to Pitfall: Strange New Worlds plug in both joysticks, this may be interesting. start up the game, things look, a little different. the tree leaves are blue? and what's going on at the bottom of the screen? use the right joystick up and down to change the map. notice the first two characters at the bottom of the screen change. use the right joystick left and right to change the start screen. notice the second two characters at the bottom of the screen change. use the left joystick to play normally. notice the last two character at the bottom of the screen change. what strange new worlds might you discover? === technical details follow... Pitfall is famous among programmers for using a Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) to generate the 255 screens in the game. LFSRs are defined by their characteristic polynomial. With the right polynomial, a maximal LFSR will visit all possible values. (except zero. 00 is weird. No one has ever been able to see Pitfall's screen 00, until now...) For an 8 bit LFSR, there are 16 different maximal polynomials. For those polynomials, there are 255 different places to start. The starting place is known as the "seed". Why did the author choose the polynomial that he did? Why did he choose the seed that he did? Would you like to explore the others? Well now you can. The right joystick up and down will increment or decrement the polynomial. There are 256 possible polynomials, but only 16 are maximal. The maximal polynomials are: 8E 95 96 A6 AF B1 B2 B4 B8 C3 C6 D4 E1 E7 F3 FA The right joystick right and left will increment or decrement the start screen. For the maximal polynomials, all start screens except 00 will be in the sequence. For other polynomials, smaller cycles may exist, or any given start screen may devolve into an even shorter sequence, leaving you no path back to the start! The hex number at the bottom of the screen gives the polynomial, the seed, and the current screen number. The game starts with the classic original polynomial and seed, B1C4. What strange new worlds might be out there? === notes from the hacker who did this. This project grew from a curiosity itch, and took longer than i had originally anticipated. i have a real appreciation now for the original author, as well as the architects of the curious machine that is the Atari 2600. Please don't ask me for any features, there simply is not enough ROM left. i could probably squeeze some more bytes out of it here or there, but there still wouldn't be enough for even the simplest function. i present this in the hopes that you may find it amusing. i have not published any maps, i'll leave it to the community to discover anything here that might be interesting. SELLING ENTIRE COLLECTION FROM 1980's. I worked as a sales rep for Activision in the early 1980's and have a LOT of prototypes (14 total - 8 for 2600, 2 for 5200, 4 for Intellivision), used games in boxes (40+ and mostly Actiivision titles), a 2600 and a 400 game console and even typed original drafts of instructions for 5 games. I want to sell it ALL IN ONE LOT. According to these blogs the protos should be worth about $80 each, no idea of the value of the instruction manuals, and we all know the value of the other games and consoles (not much...). I also have two unopened, sealed ROBOT TANK by Activision for the 2600. Check out the pics. I live in San Diego and YOU will pay shipping. First $600 (plus shipping) can have it ALL, right now! Or make your best offer. and highest bidder just may get this Collection. I had trouble uploading the pics from Google so here's a link top the pics - just copy and paste... (Sorry, I am a salesman, not a tech!!!) LOL https://photos.app.goo.gl/WN5DyyNTrGApAnec7

I came across a booklet called Programming Pitdall Harry" mentioned in "Enter" Magazine, issue #11 (October 1984), here: https://archive.org/details/enter-magazine-11/page/n27/mode/1up According to "Enter," the booklet was give away at computer stores or you could get it directly from Activision for 25 cents (that sounds like a bargain). The booklet is described as allowing you to reprogram your Pitfall disk on the Commodore 64. I did find the booklet for the C64, here: https://pcmuseum.ca/Brochures/ProgramPitfall.pdf The lengthier-than-I-expected BASIC program included in the booklet allows you to "change Harry's speed," change the scene, "make Harry's shirt red... and more!" Has anyone seen this document before now? Was there an Atari version of this booklet? Adam

My latest hack is another Moomin-related game. In this game you take on the role of Little My. Stinky is at it again! This time he stole Moominpappa's hat, Snork's glasses, The Hobgoblin's hat, and Moominmama's purse. Being the inexperienced thief that he is, Stinky dropped all his loot! Your job is to pick up as many of the items as you can in 20 minutes! Of course there are obstacles in your way like Stinky himself, you have to swing over pitfalls and the mamelukes, Snufkin's fire, and if you try to go underground the hattifatteners are out to get you. Who knew the woods in Moomin Valley were so dangerous? But as you know, Little My isn't afraid of anything! Little My's Scavenger Hunt.bin

Hi... I got my hands on a copy of Pitfall II but the label was severely damaged. I couldn't find a good one online so I made my own and thought I'd share it with the fine people here at Atariage. Also made a classic Activision label for it too. If these are any good to anyone feel free to use.

Does Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure contain a VCS/2600 Emulator to run the Atari 2600 version of Pitfall? I don't think so. I would like to be wrong. Over the years Activision has managed to port Pitfall fairly faithfully from the Atari 2600, Atari computers, Intellivision, all while looking about the same. They took a slight divergence with the ColecoVision, but all this to say Activision has had the ability to port their games and keep the same look and feel. So to me it was not surprising that they could do it yet again with the Atari Jaguar. And that's all fine and good, but what I am bringing to this age old debate/mystery? Since this is practically hexediting/emulation month for me (sprite hacking in past months) I thought I would look for the hex values of the original 2600 Pitfall. Now previously I had said on the VirtualVCS thread that I looked for these values in the Jaguar Pitfall image and did not find them. Then I realized that the Jaguar cartridge image was in a compressed format. At one time I was guided to use a program called Multi Ripper or "mrip260.zip" as it can be found on the internet for unpacking a compression format that Imagitec tends to use from the Rob Nothern Computing or RNC for short. The multiripper can look for these files and it spits out... a bunch a files with the .RNC extension. This worked really well in breaking down Bubsy: Fractured Furry Tales into graphics, map, music, and other files, though I had to pull (with help) the file directory to rename most of those files. Still have some to identify or file, but found like 90% that way. So I did the same to Pitfall tonight and looked for the opening "78D8 A200" characters of 2600 Pitfall throughout all the RNC files that Jag Pitfall spit out annnnddd... no match. But this might not be the end. As you can see in the picture above there is the RNC in the text portion, leading me to wonder if this needs to be further unpacked? But tonight I took it through at least one level of compression and found nothing so far. (File contains the unpacked files I looked through if others want to do more digging and comparison.) I have 6 factory new copies of Pitfall by Activision for the Intellivision up for auction. I am offering these to AA members first before posting these on eBay. Details and photos are here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/272731-6x-factory-new-pitfall-games-by-activision-for-intellivision

I am auctioning off several factory new copies of Pitfall by Activision for the Intellivision. Before sending each of these off to eBay, I thought I'd off them to AA members first. There are 6 of them and some have light scuffs. Because of this, PM me your bid and which one you want (or you can say you don't care which one). Photos of the outsides are provided. I have not opened them to take photos to reduce the risk of damage. However, I can open a game an provide photos of the manual, overlays, and cartridge if requested. Just to show that these are factory new, I have included a photo of the games in their shipping box. However, the shipping box itself is not for sale. US shipping: Shipping is $3 for one copy. If you win the bidding on multiple copies, then each 2nd copy has free shipping (i.e. shipping for 2 is $3 total, shipping for 3 is $6 total, shipping for 4 is $6 total, etc). International shipping is available and it has the cost pattern of "each pair costs the same as one". However, the actual cost depends on the the destination. Bidding on multiple items will be treated independently (ex: if you bid on 4 copies, you might win on 3 of them and lose on 1 of them). Unsold copies will be offered to the runners up of my choice. Bidding ends Friday, December 8th, at 5pm PST (Pacific Standard Time). Pictures are high resolution for collectors to inspect. More pictures to follow showing details of the outsides. Shipping box not for sale

Well, so much for keeping up to date with my blog. Ah well, better late than never...although some may disagree;-) Pitfall! is the first of my two latest Patch conquests (worry not, my blog entry on the latter -Seaquest - will swiftly follow!) Would it be fair to say that Pitfall! is the Activision Atari game of which general videogame fans are most aware? It was certainly the only one I was certain of before finding myself on my Quest for the Activision Patches. With this in mind, I was going to save the playing of Pitfall! for my final conquest, as a kind of season finale, so to speak, but, well, I recently got a good deal on the boxed cartridge, and it just seemed to be calling out to me like a…Screaming Piha. This is a very loud jungle bird. I looked it up. I have dabbled in Pitfall! over the years. It’s a game I’ve always wanted to ‘beat’, as it were, as I knew Pitfall! has that that complete…able thing inherent to adventure games which followed in its illustrious wake. You know, Zelda…and stuff. Until the boxed cart deal, I’ve always played Pitfall! via emulator, and often on my phone, while waiting outside of shops for Mrs F, only breaking off to occasionally nod at other husbands who had also found themselves out in the cold. Sometimes not just literally. But - and I’m embarrassed to even type this - I could never really feel the pleasures of Pitfall! However, as with all games which are highly regarded but which I don’t initially like, I assumed it was just me, and so kept dabbling – outside of a haberdasher in the rain here, in the doorway of a shoe shop in the snow there, and so on. It took playing on the real hardware – again (see earlier blog) - to show me how stupid I’d been! I know, I really should know by now. With a real controller in my hands, I could sink into Pitfall!, I could feel myself fully enveloped in the adventure. I became Pitfall Harry! As you can see, though, I’m a cautious adventurer. I don’t jump until I’m as certain as I can be that I’m going to reach the rope, and I can never bring myself to jump over three crocodiles in swift, fluid movements. I instead stand on their heads and wait. And wait. And wait. And…when the crocs close their ever-so-formidable looking mouths, I finally make my move! I know that this is an approach that will cost me dearly if I ever try to get all 32 treasures, but for now, I’m just happy that it helped me get the Patch. The lesson here? If you want to feel that wonderful buzz of success, always keep your aspirations low! You can watch my Pitfall! adventure here:)

I am trying to sell all of these games, but before I do I need to find out how much they are. If anybody can either help me with a link, or a toy appraiser in the Baltimore, Md., York, Pa. or Harrisburg, Pa. areas, I would appreciate it. I do not have a system to test if they work or not, but if they are worth it, I will buy one. They have not been played in around 35 years.
