Hi Everybody I hope somebody can help. I've upgraded my U1MB to the latest 'Ultimate' Firmware, and it seems to conflict with my side 3: cartridge (600XL with 64 KB). The firmware completed and verified no problems. When I boot it, it sometimes brings up a 'SIDE' screen and sometimes a 'SIDE3' screen and it's lost all it's ATR file support on the "SIDE3". When I try and reflash it with 'uflash.xex' it says the board is not found (even though it appears on startup and has the 1MB ram shown at the bottom. I have an SDrive Max so I copied the uflash.xex to there but still had the same issue. (also the same issue with Spata Dos X) The computer still plays all the games from the sdrive max which is good news. Any help greatly appreciated. Ultimate 1MB Firmware version 4.2 (24 January 2023)

Fujinet users with U1MB and SIDE3 may wish to update their PBI BIOS with a version which fixes a high-speed polling bug when HSIO is applied to 'All' devices. Special thanks to @fenrock.

Trying to create empty ATR files I noted the the provided tools only work on MS-Windows. Since creating an empty file isn't all that difficult I wrote wrote a little tool that can do this macOS and Linux. I also added a verify feature to check existing files for consistency. The tool works for Windows as well. I suggest to compile the file from source code as it is fairly simple will match your operating system so here a description on how to do this: Microsoft Windows Install Alire Download Alire from the Alire website: Start installation and just accept the defaults: Build the application Start the application by clicking on the icon. This will open the Alire powershell terminal window: Use cd to change into an directory of your choosing and type the following commands one at a time. Note the the directory name contains the version number and and hash code of current version and will change with each new release. alr toolchain --install "gnat" alr toolchain --install "gprbuild" alr get "atari_atr_tools" PUSHD "atari_atr_tools_1.1.3_1e2cccbb" alr build --release POPD During the build Alire ask up to 4 questions which should be answered with either Y or 1 depending on the type of question. This will build the tool for your machine. Run the Application The finished application inside the .\atari_atr_tools_1.1.3_1e2cccbb\bin\atr_tools-main.exe directory. Again: adjust for newer Versions. The --help option will show you available options. Apple macOS Install Alire Download Alire from the Alire website: The Alire distribution for macOS is just an executable inside a zip file. You can extract the zip to any location you like and add the executable flag to the alr binary. Build the application Start Terminal and change into an directory of your choosing and type the following commands one at a time. Note the directory name contains the version number and hash code of current version and will change with each new release. bin/alr toolchain --install "gnat" bin/alr toolchain --install "gprbuild" bin/alr get "atari_atr_tools" pushd "atari_atr_tools_1.1.3_1e2cccbb" ../bin/alr build --release popd During the build Alire ask up to 4 questions which should be answered with either Y or 1 depending on the type of question. This will build the tool for your machine. Run the Application The finished application is found at ./atari_atr_tools_1.1.3_1e2cccbb/bin/atr_tools-main. Again: adjust for newer Versions. Hello - I'm sure I cannot be the first to encouter this, but I cannot find anybody writting it up, not can I find a solution. I have a setup that works perfectly fine on actual hardware where I have a 130XE, U1MB, and a Side3 cart. On the SD card I have hard drive partitions, including a SpartaDOS 3 partition. With this configuration I can boot to SD3 on that partition and everything works swimingly. However, I have tried to replicate the configuration using Altirra and the SpartaDOS 3 partition will not boot. It does not tell me "NO DOS" or "BOOT ERROR", it goes directly into the internal self test menu. I can access all of the partitions on the SD card using SpartaDOS X on the U1MB. I have the latest firmwares on all devices, both in actual hardware, and in Altirra. I have also made an image of the physical SD card to use in Altirra, so I am certain that the card itself is not the issue. Has anybody else been able to boot a SpartaDOS 3 partition from a Side3 cart within Altirra? If so, how did you get that to work?

130XE that was upgraded to 320K (sometime in the past) exhibiting intermittent RAM Test Failures. Sometimes it passes, sometimes one block fails and sometimes a different block fails. I've cleaned the board with alcohol and replaced the main filter cap, C1. Power supply is new from Brewing Academy. I reflowed the power switch connection, removed the SIO caps and reflowed one loose bodge wire. But I haven't touched the rest of the bodge wires yet. It looks like I'd have to remove and replace most of them since they are so tight against the chip connections. Photos are attached for your entertainment. Any advice in troubleshooting (or an alternate path for repair/upgrade) is welcome. Note: This machine has a Omniview ROM with a selector switch mounted in the case. Note 2: I've been using Side3 with this machine. When cold, the machine will boot to Side3 SpartaDOS, Atari stock OS, Omniview XE OS or a Qix 8 Bit game cart just fine. But it has a heck of a time booting to the Side3 Loader screen until the computer has been on for a few minutes. Even when warmed up sometimes the machine will lock up or not load games.

When I power on my Atari 600XL with SIDE3 inserted, the switch on the front of the cartridge has no effect. I always end up in SpartaDOS X. From when I've read, when in the UP position, I should be going to the SIDE3 Loader. This machine has a U1MB installed, as well as a FujiNet on the SIO port. U1MB is currently set to start SpartaDOS X. If I set the U1MB to start the Loader instead, it always goes into the Loader, regardless of the switch position. If I disable both settings, then I end up in the FujiNet setup. I don't see any relevant settings in the SIDE3 Loader screens. Is there a way to set this up so that this switch chooses between the SIDE3 Loader and SpartaDOS X?

SIDE3 Loader Beta: Best way to partition 16GB SD card?
Calab posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I've an Atari 600XL with U1MB and SIDE3 cartridge. I've updated the firmware on the SIDE3 to the beta and have been trying to figure out the best way to set up my 16GB SD card in the SIDE3. Before updating I had a 4GB SD card (still OK). The first partition is 256MB FAT (524288 sectors of 512 bytes) as DN: (read only in SpartaDOS with FATFS.SYS). The second partition is 3.5GB and contains four 32MB partitions (65535 sectors of 512 bytes) as D5: though D8:. 7079870 sectors (3.6GB) are unused. With the new SIDE3 Loader, what is the best way to set up a new 16GB SD card? Is there a way to boot to CLI.XEX instead of SpartaDOS? Should I even want to do this? I also noticed that in FDISK I can create a 4GB FAT16 partition. Can SpartaDOS use this? The new Loader look great! I'm looking forward to it being finalized and all the new features being available! Thanks! -
New SIDE3 Loader Testing and Development Thread
flashjazzcat posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'm pleased to finally announce the release of the beta version of the new SIDE3 Loader, following a significant re-write which commenced in July 2021. You can download the installer and WIP documentation from the page linked below: https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/side3-beta-loader/ Here's a permalink which always points to the latest version of the loader: https://atari8.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SIDE3-Loader-Beta.zip And the same for the manual: https://atari8.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SIDE3-Loader-Manual.pdf Since this is beta software of steadily increasing complexity, please approach it as you would any beta software: namely, with the expectation that bugs will exist and that certain features may not work predictably or as described. In particular, please back up your SD cards before letting the beta loader loose on them, especially when writing to the card (by creating new files and folders, deleting content, etc). Where multiple cards are available, consider using a cloned SD card until any destructive bugs are ironed out. I won't be held accountable for lost data which wasn't backed up. With that said, the file system drivers are reasonably well tested, and it has been many months since they have mangled a FAT volume when creating new files, etc. A precis of some of the headline features (about half of which are new to this version): Read/write support for up to eight FAT partitions with long filenames 64KB FAT directory buffer allowing the browsing 1,024 files per folder Fast recursive search facility Intuitive context menu system CAR/ROM file loading, ATR mounting, XEX loading Powerful file management tools (recursive file copier, delete, rename, etc) Windows-style cut/copy/paste facilities and keyboard shortcuts PDM audio playback BASIC file loading Built-in FATFMS (an Atari/SpartaDOS read/write FAT DOS workalike with CLI) MEM.SAV facility in DOS Autorun facility Bookmarks/favourites Launcher shortcuts and aliases (with hotkey launching) Disk image creation History (remembers your most recently used XEX, ATR and CAR files) Support for SD cards/FAT partitions of up to 128GB Time/date stamping of new and modified files (via real-time clock) Simultaneous HDD/ATR/CAR emulation Bootable, OS-level disk image and HDD support with U1MB when present Limited ATR support without U1MB Remember the last accessed partition, folder, or file Here's the first of two videos introducing the new features of this loader, as well as giving a basic overview of SIDE3 for those not yet familiar with the hardware: There are still a lot of futher enhancements on the to-do list, and the purpose of this thread is to discuss issues and introduce and discuss new features. Hardware developments are also ongoing, so I expect to be quite busy for the remainder of the year keeping up with that while ironing out any problems in what's already been implemented on the existing hardware. The manual is likewise a work in progress, although the general structure of the document is fully fleshed out. I know the documentation of the DOS 'COPY' command is hopelessly deficient, for example. Writing the documentation over the past few weeks has certainly brought home to me that I've written a new Atari disk operating system along the way, which would have represented a fair bit of work in isolation, let alone as a component of a complete loader re-write, so I feel a little less bad about taking months longer than I hoped to actually release a first beta of this software. I hope you enjoy it, in any case. I feel like I could use a break after this, but I'll nevertheless brace myself for the crash reports.- 143 replies

Received a brand-new SIDE3 on Monday. Straight out of the box, I upgraded it to version 0.40 of @flashjazzcat's firmware and installed an 8GB Kingston Micro SD card (class 10, U1) in an adapter. Everything seems to work fine in terms of cartridge loading functionality. However, the RTC seems to lose a significant amount of time - about 20 minutes per day, give or take. At this rate, it looks as though a loss of about 2.5 hours / week will be the rough average. The battery is presumed healthy as it reads dead-on 3 volts outside of the cartridge. Use is in a 600XL with a 64K internal RAM upgrade and an 800XL with both an internal 256K RAM upgrade and UAV. Both machines are powered by 5V 2.5A USB power supplies (ex-RasPi) through cable adapters from the usual suspects. Any thoughts? I'm at something of a loss to explain it.

Since over a week i have problems to get my Side3 running with SDX and register the SD. To understand the following hardware is used: 800XL with 320k megaram expansion, Sophia2, Side3 Booting without SD-Card: Booting with SD-Card inserted: Using the Sideloader an SD-Card all works fine an i can start ATR files till 180kb. But if i'm using my spare 800XL without any upgrades SDX boot up and recognise the SD-Card every time. For me it look like that the PSU is weak. (apologize for the wrong term) Any suggestions?

I'm pleased to announce the release of the version 4.0 firmware update for U1MB, Incognito, SIDE2, SIDE3, 1088XEL, and 1088XLD. The update includes a redesigned SIDE loader, and completely redesigned BIOS plugins with support for SIDE3, Sophia 2, and PokeyMAX. Also newly introduced is support for an NTSC colour palette in VBXE (loaded transparently when the machine is turned on). User documentation has also been comprehensively updated, with sections covering the new SIDE3 loader and Incognito. Most excitingly, Incognito is now capable of supporting firmware plugins, subject to release of a CPLD JED update which I have been testing for Candle. The SIDE3 loader is now capable of native PDM (FujiConvert) playback as well (see the manual for discussion of all new features). https://atari8.co.uk/ultimate-1mb-firmware-update-4-0-released/ Since I spent the entirety of Saturday preparing and uploading all this stuff (after spending the previous day moving my website and work emails), I'll forego further disucssion for the moment, and hopefully answer any questions as we go on. I will probably make a video showing a topical overview of what's been released as well. All ROMs inlclude the newly released SpartaDOS X 4.49e; I thought we might as well get in sync with the SIDE3 ROM, which uses this version by default. Meanwhile, SpartaDOS 3.x, Bewe-DOS and RealDOS users can find RTC drivers for U1MB and SIDE3 on the APT toolkit disk. I would not be surprised if I screwed something up while preparing the files here, so if anything looks anomalous, please let me know. Likewise, please use this thread to discuss any installation or usability issues. The menus in the setup menu and loader are quite different now (many controls are 'modal' to facilitate interactive facilities via callbacks), but this actually makes things like setting the clock quite a bit easier. Feedback from testers of pre-release versions (indeed, some variation of this firmware has found its way onto all U1MB and Incognito machines which have been through my hands these past few months) has been positive, so hopefully the only work that remains to do will involve minor bug fixes. Meanwhile, now that this update is released, I hope to focus on ambitious new features in the SIDE3 loader, such as FAT write capability, more media playback support, and auto-mounting media. Update (060621) Thanks to Doug_in_NC on Discord for immediately spotting that I'd broken joystick trigger handling in main BIOS 4.02 for U1MB and Incognito. Fixed in 4.03, so please head over to the firmware section and update (U1MB/1088 users may update the 'FIRMWARE.ROM' file, and Incognito users need flash only 'IBIOS.ROM'). Blog post: https://atari8.co.uk/u1mb-and-incognito-firmware-4-0-bug-fix/ The 'complete' ROM images also have the update (disregard file creation date). SIDE3 Loader Update (230621) For those who already updated their SIDE3 loader or are yet to do so, please be sure to download version 0.40, which fixes MegaCart, Sic! and AtariMax 1Mbit/8Mbit emulation bugs. https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/side3/ Update (070721) Blog post: https://atari8.co.uk/u1mb-incognito-1088xel-and-1088xld-firmware-update/

I´ve updated my SIDE3 to the latest Firmware and now wanted to access the FAT-partition from SDX. I know, there is a huge thread, but I didn´t find a solution there, except from copying a prepared image. But I want to do it from scratch. First: I have a Mac with OS X Big Sur and a Windows 10 machine with the latest update. Atari800XL with U1MB, SIDE3, SIO2SD, 1 SD Card with 4GB and 1 SD Card with 16GB. What I did: - 2 GB SD Card in SIDE3 - Boots into SDX 4.49e - FDISK: 2 Partitions: 2000MB FAT16, remainder APT - Create APT Partition "C" with 65535 sectors bootable - format that with FORMAT from SDX - put SD into Mac, use DISKUTIL as described by Jon - successfully got FAT16 partition, which the Mac mounts. Put two *.xex on it - Boot SIDE3 into Fileloader: FAT-partition recognized, can start both files (and wasted an hour playing TimePilot) - Boot SIDE3 into SDX, using FDISK to install FAT as EXT partition - try to access DK: - Error 138 - Install FATFS.SYS 0.87L (from SDX toolkit): Still Error 138 So: Everything´s working, but I can´t access the FAT16 partition from SDX. CHKFAT says "Not a FAT disk" Next try: Use Windows 10 to format the FAT volume. No success. Last try: 16GB SD card, initialise as FAT32 (4GB), format it with Windows 10. Same as above: All is working, but I can´t read the FAT partition from SDX. The Config.sys on the SIDE3 is unchanged, I´ve also tried loading FATFS via AUTOEXEC.BAT, but simply can´t read the FAT partition. Any help (that does not sound like "use Linux", simply don´t have and want it) appreciated. Edit: Stupid me, I just realise, I used CHKFAT on the APT (C:) partition. Will do correctly now, one moment. Addition: At the last try I forgot to give the FAT partition a Drive number (DK:). When doing this, I get Error 148 and CHKFAT looks like this: Still can´t access K:

Hi, At the beginning I wanted to say that SIDE3 is a great piece of hardware that I have been waiting for a long time for. Many thanks to @candle and @flashjazzcat for a great job! Of course also to the @lotharek for the great production quality. However, while browsing through the collection of my different types of files (ATRs, CARs, ROMs...), I came across a problem: 512kB images for the SIC! catridge are not supported correctly: - SIC31IN1.ROM - some games start, trying to start others ends with SELFTEST. - The Best....car - mounting the image ends with the screen flashing. There is no problem with that files in the other cartridge (Ultimate). I attach both files. SIC31in1.rom The Best Polish ATARI Games.car
