  1. Hi all, Quick question. Is it possible to determine if a STFM motherboard is PAL or NTSC just by looking at it? I have a STFM from a member here which did not have a power supply. Got one ordered, but I noticed the bottom of the STFM case is european. It's possible that the case may have been changed at some point, but before spending any more money and while I wait for the PSU to arrive, it'll be nice to know... the only info from the motherboard is that it's a C070789-00 rev.C... Thanks!
  2. This year my target of spring cleaning is the elimination of literally hundreds of bulky VHS movies and other videos. I'm not concerned with the movies I've seen countless times, but the home movies... gotta keep them. So, I searched and bought this cheap little device on fleabay.... I know a lot of you already have F18A's, but IF you are still using the standard NTSC output of the 9918, this would sure be a cheap way to do screen captures from "Real Iron". Also, there is an old TI video titling program floating around out there somewhere... this could give a new video some "retro feel" or "look".
  3. I love reviewing weird and unusual games that most people may not have heard of and a few months ago I started sharing some of my favorite games from the Lynx. So far there are three episodes to this "Lynx retrospective" where I discuss the games. It starts with Electrocop, then Gates of Zendocon, followed by Slime World. My next one will be a conclusion video (unless suggested otherwise) where I showcase a few more games for the system with little snippets about each one (Blue Lightning, Paperboy, Hydra, Gauntlet, Toki, Rygar, and California Games to name a few). I thought fans of the system would get a kick out of it ^_^ I hope it is found to be enjoyable... Episode One: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP5EHK0JLLw Any feedback or suggestions for more games would be welcome. Should I give games like Blue Lightning their own video or should I just end it with the compilation as mentioned above?
  4. I bought the StarTech Video Converter VID2HDCON that was recommended by someone in this forum and it appears that you can't plug the Atari 800 plug directly into the composite in. What do I need to make this work. The screen shots in the post that recommended it are awesome. Thanks...
  5. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the Intellivision Model 1 system can be modified to be compatible with the Atari 2600 System Changer as well as a Composite A/V mod at the same time? If so, are the modifications easy or are they pretty difficult? I'm really interested in this because it seems like these mods would kill two birds with one stone, especially since my 2600 died recently. Any light that can be shed on the subject is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  6. I found my original 800xl from when I was a kid in the garage. Did not have a power supply so I picked up a 61982 off ebay. When I turn it on I see scrambled video and hear a buzz. This happens when I use the RF out and when using composite out via the monitor port. I recently had a similar issue with a 2600 and swapping out the TIA worked. Could this be as easy as replacing the GTIA or does the buzzing indicate another issue?
  7. Hey all, I recently purchased a Philips VG8020/00 MSX Home Computer. I'm having some trouble getting a decent video signal out of the thing. When I hook it up to my VCR/DVD Combo via the RF out and convert the signal into composite, I get a glitchy screen, jumping from left to right, going from color to black and white. However, the MSX boot up text is present, and when I press keys on the keyboard, they do get added to the screen. I used the automatic tuning options on my VCR/DVD combo, but it sadly does not improve the quality. I also tried connecting a Sega Mega Drive RGB connector to the Monitor out on the computer, but that didn't do anything apart from making some pop noises. I might have to get a different cable to test that out. I also know for sure that my set-up isn't the problem; I've connected other coaxial game-consoles the same way (Atari 2600, Videopac G7000) and they all work. The unit looks fine and all (no mayor external damage). What I did notice though, was some noises inside the machine when I held it sideways; there could be some dirt in there. Also, some buttons get stuck from time to time (especially the directional buttons). I'll open it up and give it a good clean one of these days. Has anyone here experienced similar problems and got them solved? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! I hope the damage (if it has any) is not to severe; would be awesome to get it up and running again! Thanks!

  9. After pulling my Apple IIGS out of the attic, I plugged it in to my modern LCD TV via composite. However, upon boot up, the screen is garbled and jumpy. If i wiggle/twist the RCA connector at the IIGS end, i can fix the garbled video and jumpiness, however the colors are all wrong, as in they look very deadened/muted. Medium blue appears as a dark blueish grey, dark red looks like brown, yellow looks very faded, etc. Is this caused by the failure of a certain chip, should I replace the capacitors, or what? EDIT: I should also add that if I flip the switch on the back, and turn it on again, I have to wiggle the RCA cable all over again for a while to get the image to work. When viewing text, there are also several pink/green artifacts. Knowing that it is an Apple II on a color display, this could happen, but I just wanted to put it in here to be safe.
  10. After my Vader 2600 has been running for around 10 minutes or so, the colors on the screen start to flicker and fade. The video signal is clear without static or lines. It's just the colors that start to get distorted. Like shown in the video below, the blue background on Ms. Pac MAn turns green. Sometimes it goes completely black and white for a while. I checked the output on the voltage regulator on the board, and it is putting out a steady 5 v. I also turned the color potentiometer. Any ideas? Thanks. https://youtu.be/fIStcwKMiWI
  11. 2600 bars.. with video!!!
  12. I just got a coco 2 really cheap from a thrift store and can't get a picture. It seem to be getting voltage on the board all the way up to the RF module but no picture. I get about 1.2v DC from the RF. I get 9v AC from the transformer at two places it's connected to the board. All the solders look good, chips seated and nothing seems to be burned out. I'm not familiar with the coco but I do know it's a 1st gen coco2 that had 64k installed. Any ideas from you seasoned coco experts that might send me in the right direction? FYI: I never had a coco when I was a kid (an Atari and TI-99 guy) but always was fascinated with them. I really would like to get this working if possible. thanks
  13. Hello Everyone, I just got a hold of a Darth Vader and am trying to get it into working order again and am having video difficulties. It's a Rev 17 board and I'm currently in the process of putting in sockets as I remove the chips. The pictures attached show what my lovely screen looks like as is. Currently I have a known working RIOT chip in it and a new On/Off switch. The RF cable, Missile Command, joystick and power supply all work fantastically with my Woody, so if you have any suggestions that would be great. I was thinking the TIA chip, but before I start desoldering it, I thought I might get some ideas. Cheers
  14. I have an old Nintendo 64 that my wife enjoys playing. It's a good party console because everybody remembers it and can have a little nostalgia, so I have it hooked up to my big screen HDTV. Recently I got a new Vizio TV, and started to have problems. My Vizio is one of those TVs that only have Component (Y/Pb/Pr) jacks, with the green jack (Y) doubling as the Composite jack (Sucker has 5 HDMI ports...seems a shame I cant take advantage of it since my A/V receiver has 6...). So, plugging the N64 in, I can't get a picture to show up, with most cartridges, in most situations. Audio comes in fine, so I know the console is running, and it works on one of my older TVs just fine. I read online sometimes those expansion paks go bad, thinking that was the problem, I was about to spring for a new one...except the audio worked so I was stumped. So I try different cartridges, and I get the weirdest results from Star Wars Episode I Racer. It's one of those that can take advantage of the Expansion Pak's extra memory thru a menu option, but it's not required for playing. So the N64 would start, I could hear the audio but no picture. Then suddenly, the menu demo video shows up! I hit a button, and as soon as it goes back to the main menu, no picture again. I start hitting buttons blindly, and get farther into the race, when the race starts video shows up again and I can race! So I'm thinking, I'll turn off the hi-res graphics to see if it affects anything, I did, same results. So now I'm searching the internet, letting it cycle from black screen to video, then suddenly I see the main menu, only it's in black and white. And then, when it cuts to the menu demo video, it remains in black and white, along with the rest of the game till a reset. If I leave it long enough, it will revert from black menu screen/full color video, to black & white menu screen/black & white video. None of my other games show up at all, no matter how blindly far I can get thru the menus. I know about all the video signal stuff, how component has luminance on the green channel and putting a composite input on it will show black & white like that, but if it shares jacks, why isn't my TV smart enough to to figure it out (or just give me the option to choose...). My gamecube renders perfectly with no issues on the composite cable. So my ideas...perhaps the signal from the N64 is too weak and the TV thinks it's actually a component signal? Anything I can do to fix it? Or maybe something actually is bad with the console?
  15. Hello all, What an excellent forum! I've read here for sometime now. Been using my STe 4 mb RAM for years for Cubase and composing music. It's also got some great synth editors! I recently moved back to the UK from the United States, and my STe upon unpacking is not working. There appears to be no physical damage, however only the power light is coming on when I try to boot. No video output, and the FD 3.5" is not even trying to read. No light on it. Not even a faint one. There's also no audio. I've reseated the RAM, but that's about it. No luck with that by the way. I do have a 520 which I've swapped the PSU with, but nothing doing there either. The 1040 supply is working fine. Just something on the MB is not! I'm no electronics engineer, but I do understand a multimeter. I don't see any discoloration or cracks on the MB, but maybe I ought to check somewhere specific? Capacitors also look OK. Anybody have any ideas? Is it worth trying to fix, or should I say goodbye to my loyal friend since 1990 and replace him with a new Atari? Thanks, Fran
  16. I picked up an AV mod on eBay, opened up an Intellivision II, but don't have enough clue to know where to wire what. Can anyone lend me some ideas, tell me where to mark-up the included motherboard image, and I will post it here for the next person to use? Thanks.
  17. Good Morning All, I've recently dug out the Atari XE/XEGS whatever you want to call it from storage hooked it up to find I've got no video from any of the output options. I sometimes get just a blank screen then other times I get a brownish screen, most times I get what looks like v-hold failure with a single white bar except its diagonal & rolling no amount of tweaking the v-hold changes anything also I've got no sound. The guy I bought it from was trying to hook it up & not having any luck but figured it was just him not knowing how to hook it into his modern flat screen. I bought it untested from the counter of a RadioShack after he got frustrated by the clerks trying to sell him $30 worth of adapters so I've never actually seen it working myself. Things I've tried: 1: Multiple screens/outputs/cables. 2: Tested power supply voltages which were accurate. 3: Cart/No Cart inserted. 4: Booting into the self test. 5: Checking for hot chips on the mainboard none are particularly concerning. I can thermal image the entire board later. 6: Just hoping it was waking up from a long slumber. I'd appreciate any ideas as troubleshooting this beast doesn't seem to be covered all that well anywhere nor does a FSM appear to exist. Where would I buy any spares for this machine as I understand some of these parts are exclusive to the XE/XEGS. Thanks
  18. Hey guys, so a few weeks ago I purchased an "as-is" ColecoVision off eBay. The graphics were all garbled on the display, so I assumed it was either a power or video RAM problem. Being a very novice electronics tinkerer, I figured I could give a go at repairing the console. After replacing the power switch, verifying the power supply was providing the appropriate voltages, replacing the video RAM with the 5v RAM mod, and repairing some broken traces on the RAM bus I got functioning video! However, I am not getting any audio out of the Coleco. I next wired an RCA cord to Pins 7 and 8 on the audio chip and confirmed it is outputting audio. Suspecting a broken trace somewhere between the audio chip and the RF modulator (due to my experience with the memory bus) I used my multimeter to follow the signal from Pin 7 (audio out) along the various hops on the board. Confirming no break between pin 7 and the last point before entering the RF modulator, I removed the metal box from around the modulator, separated the daughterboard from the modulator, and reconnected the board with wires so I may explore inside it. I have found no broken trace or component between pin 7 and C88. The only symptoms I now have are the staticy audio (and no game audio as far as I know), and the video signal occassionaly gives out. I'm stumped as to what the possible issues could be. I've made a YouTube video of the issue in hopes of getting some interesting leads from those on this forum. That video may be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME-nVOafMpA Thank you for any time and advice provided for this.
  19. Hello, I recently inherited an Upright Asteroids arcade game. The kind found in the old arcades. The game appears to operate but there is no video output. I've been reading around and it seems one of the first things is to replace all (or most?) of the electrolytic capacitors. I was able to find the Real Bob Roberts site that offers re-cap kits. There are several cap kits (http://www.therealbobroberts.net/caps.html) including one specifically for the Asteroids game. Questions: 1) Is the Asteroids re-cap kit all the I will need? 2) Is anyone familiar with this particular video issue? I'm an embedded engineer and quite familiar with circuits and etc. Although, I am entirely unfamiliar with the likely failure modes of this machine, and would be grateful for insight from folks experienced repairing the Asteroids arcade game. The model number is 215 XX. Kindly, Graham
  20. Hi Guys This is my first post here so please be gentle with me. I'm from the UK and I've recently bought a couple of Heavy Sixer's from the States. I have modded one of them with a composite video kit and it works great. However, I was wondering what else I would need to do to convert the system into a PAL unit? I've read about the TIA and how it differs so my questions are: a) Could I replace the system board only with a PAL light sixer, keeping the switch board and all other original components? Would this work? b) If I was to keep the system board and replace the TIA with a PAL unit, is there anything else I need to consider? The info on the internet I've found seems to be pretty vague. I read something about the crystal also needing replacing and maybe some other bits? Thanks in advance
  21. I've been using an almost stock 130XE with my Black Box. Like most XE's, the video is pretty good, but still not on par with some of my enhanced 600 and 800 XL's. (My absolute best system for video is a 600XL with the "simple" Sumrall video fix, augmented by a few simple improvements from the KJMann video mods. As such, it lacks all the added parts that can be stuffed into the missing component holes, but as I said it is the best I have and I would put it up against any non-VBXE system. The "Quick and Easy" video upgrade certainly makes a great improvement for the 800XL. And I even previously did the Super Video XE from Atari Classics, but to my eyes, the "Super Video XE" does not make much improvement, and is reasonably complicated to boot. All it did for me was to boost the color intensity make the foreground text really strong. So has anyone found any "simple fixes" to enhance the XE's? My actual complaints are that I get "smudgy" faint vertical bands in the background, and the text is not very crisp. (Note, these are not the normal color clock vertical lines.) Picture below shows the bands. I do have the color set very high for this picture to accentuate the bands, but even at normal levels, it is still pretty noticeable. Thanks, Larry
  22. The enhanced learning of the regularity and structure of environments may act as a core mechanism by which action video game play influences performance in perception, attention, and cognition. Video games have an appeal that crosses many demographic boundaries, such as age, gender, ethnicity, or educational attainment. They can be used to help set goals and rehearse working toward them, provide feedback, reinforcement, self-esteem, and maintain a record of behavioral change. Their interactivity can stimulate learning, allowing individuals to experience novelty, curiosity and challenge that stimulates learning. There is the opportunity to develop transferable skills, or practice challenging or extraordinary activities, such as flight simulators, or simulated operations. Whether playing video games has negative effects is something that has been debated for 30 years, in much the same way that rock and roll, television, and even the novel faced similar criticisms in their time. Purported negative effects jocuri such as addiction, increased aggression, and various health consequences such as obesity and repetitive strain injuries tend to get far more media coverage than the positives. In a series of experiments on small numbers of gamers (10 to 14 people in each study), the researchers reported that gamers with previous experience of playing such action video games were better at perceptual tasks such as pattern discrimination than gamers with less experience. In another experiment, they trained gamers who had little previous experience of playing action games, giving them 50 hours practice. It was shown that these gamers performed much better on perceptual tasks than they had prior to their training. The paper concludes!
  23. OK, so here's a new release of Stella. This release focuses on video and sound bugfixes, so not a lot of new functionality. Changes are as follows: As usual, Stella can be downloaded from here, and donations are welcomed here. Please report any issue in this thread or by PM.
  24. OK, let's try this once again. What do you folks think of the end cap labels that I remade from scratch. Did I miss any variations? Spell check appreciated too. Printed these on standard paper so not finished yet. Be kind, remember I am an amateur. Thanks!
  25. I just watched this video, quite funny but nothing to write home about. But at the end they talking about a piece of hardware I never heard about. The Jaguar Jugebox which "Allow you to have 6 games cardriges connected to yoru jaguar at the same time'. Ever heard of it ? Do you have info ? Pictures ?
