  1. Hi All, I was experimenting with a WD1770 instead of the WD1772 in my XF-551 5.25 inches drive. I thought the conclusion about the compatibility of the WD1770 was that it should work as long as you are not doing 720K in 3.5" floppies (no matter if using HyperX or Woodley firmware). However, I got reading and booting problems with some MyDOS 360K 5.25" floppies when using WD1770... with some, others were read correctly. I was reading about the differences b/w WD1770 and WD1772 and it looks like the steps rates available are the only difference. Not really fully understanding the step rate concept, but having an idea of what it is, could a weird step rate selection during formatting in some 360K 5.25" floppies be the cause of the inability to read those diskettes? Why we need to select a step rate during formatting in some DOS in the first place? how that affect the reading of that floppy in other disk drives / other firmwares? and finally... what is the last word regarding this WD1770 compatibility with XF551? Thanks, Mauricio
  2. Just to keep things lively, this is the set of all (known to me) XF schematics. Maybe this way I can find them easier the next time I look for them. Mariusz Geisler From: http://blog.3b2.sk/igi/post/Chyby-v-scheme-ATARI-XF-551-Bugs-in-circuit-ATARI-XF551.aspx Igor Gramblicka V1 Igor Gramblicka V2 From: https://atariwiki.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Atari%20XF551 Atari Japan Preliminary XF551_schematic.pdf And from the FAQ: The reverse side of a 2-sided "flippy" disk may be used by inserting the disk into the drive upside-down. But note: Chinon-built XF551--CANNOT read/write/format disk backside if the disk has no 2nd timing hole Mitsumi-built XF551--CAN read/write disk backside if the disk has no 2nd timing hole, but CANNOT format the backside without the 2nd timing hole. Discussion here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/138304-cant-flip-disk-on-xf551/
  3. My turn for XF551 troubleshooting. I get only 'Boot Error' and what seems weird to me is the drive head arm never moves... never seeks forward or backward when I am getting this error. Read-on for more details. I have a great looking, clean, new to me XF551 drive. I took the top cover off and removed the metal shielding of the drive mech so I can really see what is going on. - I cleaned both heads. - I have a good, known working DOS 2.5 diskette that boots fine in my 1050 using the same SIO cable and power supply I am using with the XF551. - powered-off, I gently manually nudge the drive head arm toward the front of the drive, its movement is easy and smooth. - when I power-on the head mechanism quickly moves itself back to what I will call 'starting position'. I assume this is good. - when I power-on (without having manually nudged the drive head arm) the drive head arm very quickly moves ever so slightly forward then backward. Much faster and much less distance than what I am used to with the 1050 (Can you confirm this is normal?) - I insert the DOS 2.5 diskette and close the door handle. Unlike the 1050, the XF551 does not start spinning but I think this is normal (Can you confirm this is normal?) - I power-on the connected 800XL, the XF551 begins spinning (and front green light comes on)... However, I only get a slow (once ever 5 seconds) 'Boot Error' message on the screen. What I find really odd is the drive head arm never moves forward or backwards... no seeking whatsoever. Thanks for reading and super thanks for any/all advice and ideas.
  4. Need help getting an Atari XF551 drive working that has the XFD 1.5 ROM for dual drives. I recently acquired a dual drive XF551 that does not work properly. When I opened up the drive, I noticed the positioning of the ROM in the socket is to the back 24 pins of the 28 pin socket. Should the chip start at the notched end of the socket? (see picture) I can’t seem to find a how to install manual for this. When I tested the5.25” drive from the dual drive unit on another XF551, the drive light would come on, and the motor would spin, but the read/write head did not move. When I tested a known working drive on the XF551 with the XFD ROM the drive did not work, so I have to resolve the issue with the circuit board in that drive as well. There is also another module attached that I don’t know what it is for. (see pictures) Any help is appreciated.
  5. I received and cleaned-up a 1050 and XF551 today. Blew out the dust bunnies, lubricated the rails, cleaned the drive heads, gave the cases a bath, etc. Using a known good power supply and SIO cable I went to testing these one at a time. I could not get either one to boot from a DOS disk so I switched to a cartridge based DOS. I could not get either to read a disk so I tried to format a disk. Both drives set off to format, I hear the head stepping, I hear a write or two, long seek, more stepping, then both throw an error 144 ‘Device Done Error’ the bits of the error description that may apply are: ‘unable to read or write the requested sector’ OR caused ‘by variations in drive motor speed’ It seems so odd to me that both drives have such similar issues. Both were in their original foam and boxes but had likely been stored in hot and likely damp locations. Thanks in advance for troubleshooting advice and order of things to try.
  6. Hi All, I have a non-working Xf551. The head moves out of the diskette window range. The track 0 sensor is working correctly, the problem is in the other size (closer to the center of the diskette). If I ask for a disk formating the head moves nicely step by step from the outside to the inside, but finally start hitting the plastic border of the floppy window. First I thought the track zero sensor was wrongly located "too inside", but even after moving it as far as I can away from the center still the head hits the border close to the center of the diskette. I have little hope regarding this mechanics, but I want to try something else meanwhile I wait for a another d503 or other 360kb drive to show up in ebay with a decent price tag. BTW, I already checked that the xf551 works with another mech. Of my other xf551, so I concluded the problem it is NOT in the xf551 board. Thanks for any help.
  7. Hi! I am new to the XF551 drive and to DOS XE. When I run SETUP.COM the ‘Current Configuration’ thinks the XF551 is an AT810 as in the picture. Any ideas why? Obviously the XF551 boots, I have copied a disk, etc.
  8. Dear all, I've indulged myself with a great new 3"1/2 disk drive that I bought from "Sell My Retro". Until I can find and afford a true XF351 prototype, I'm truly happy with this disk drive. It's a hand-made clone of the XF551, with a 3"1/2 mechanism. I got it with a bootable DOS II+ disk (Stefan Dorndorf). It works fine. I tried to operate the drive with the SpartaDOS X cartridge, and formatted a 720kb disk, fine! Now, I'd like to get your expertise: SpartaDOS X allows me to format the diskette but not to make it bootable with a copy of the DOS... For a 3"1/2 disk drive, what do you think would be the best DOS, to create "bootable", 720kb formatted 3"1/2 diskettes? I would also like to get any documentation about this motherboard, to figure out what this J6 section (S1/S2/SIDE/STEP/DIR/TR00/VCC) is useful for. Thank you! Laurent (I've got more pictures of the drive and its motherboard if anyone is interested)
  9. Hi @all, I´m currently looking for an empty ATARI XF551 case, if possible with the matching side rails for a 5.25 inch drive. If anyone want to sell, pls make an offer. Thanks in advance! andY

  11. After putting together a couple of Dropcheck's XF551 boards, I decided to see if I could make use of the old PCBs and with a little cutting I was able to fit a XF551 pcb and a 3.5 mechanism into a 1050XL case. The back of the case had to have a large rectangular cut out and that is the only bad cosmetic issue. I would like to use the 1050 power switch and power on LED. I have several non-working 1050s so I think I can cut off the pcb section that has the switch and LED; that leaves wiring the front switch as my only real challenge. I would like to know if I could leave the 551 switch in place in the off position and run wires from the power jack through the 1050 switch to the back of the 551 switch.
  12. Remember the idea of creating a 3.5 drive for XL line of computer and devices? I remember that someone posted a 1050 styled kyroflux case. I found it and I guess it can be modified or even used like that as a first prototype. It is a great starting point, but it might need some work to make it SF551 board compatible. As you can see in the link, the kyroflux board goes under the floppy drive itself. Something similar could be done for SF551 as long as the height of the board is not too much. The back openings may need some work as well. I think is will look very cool and usable for large collection of games, images ans some demos. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3287420
  13. Hey guys, I am looking for ADOS in an ATR file that was created by Bill Wilkinson back in 1987. Does anyone have this disk image? I have googled it and found an article, but not the disk image.
  14. Is there a preferred method of creating 360kb "XF-551 style" auto boot menu disks in quad density? I'm looking for something like radmenu or similar that can handle a large capacity disk format.
  15. Hi guys, A few weeks ago I ordered a Sio2Sd from Lotharek. Now I am trying to copy an ATR to a floppy disk, but I cannot get it to work. I tried to find answers in the Sio2Sd wiki (the English part) and I searched AtariAge, but I can not find a solution. Hopefully some of you can help. My setup is a 130XE and a XF551 fitted with a XF Speedy. I can succesfully boot from the Sio2SD as drive 1. I can succesfully boot from the XF551 as drive 1, a copy programm recognizes the Sio2Sd as drive 2 but when I start the copy process I get an error 138 on the Sio2SD. It is the same when I swap the drive numbers and when I switch off the speedy part in the XF. But then the really strange part. I disconnected the XF551 to see if the drive is the problem. I use only the Sio2SD as drive one. I can succesfully boot an ATR with Mycopier (got it from this topic: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/206903-transfer-of-atr-images-via-ape-or-prosystem/#entry2667433 ) but when I start the copy process (with the Mycopier.ATR still as the active ATR) I get a read error. So the ATR which succesfully booted cannot be read anymore. The display of the Sio2Sd first displays the following: 31: $3F(?) $0004 and when I hit start again it displays 31: $53(S) $0004. The Sio2Sd is configurated with Highspeed off, Topdrive off, device 0. I have set all unused drivenumbers to off. Any help is appreciated! Best regards, Fred Meijer
  16. Hello all, I have been slowly trying to get a 3.5" drive connected to my 800XL. As a caveat: I have access to many many other ways to put data on the 8bit. I realize these are probably more expedient and efficient, but I like to try old stuff. I'm weird that way. So, if you can stomach that level of oddity, I would WELCOME your help Here's what I have: XF551 with a Bob Wooley 80 track ROM. Probably works, purchased off of ePay. The 551 worked as stock before I pulled the old rom and put in the new one. Did not have to socket it as a socket was already there. Mistumi 3.5" 1.44MB drive pulled from a Windows 95(!) machine. Works. Formatted a 720k floppy just fine (I used it to create a boot disk to load the drivers for the Portfolio Card drive, so I could connect a iomega ZIP100 drive to the Portfolio . . worked like a charm! but that is another story for another forum) A collection of 34pin card edge to IDC adaptors. [see pic] I can get it all connected, but I cannot get SDX to format. It sees the drive without a problem. Access light comes on when being accessed, but no joy. I know something is not right because SDX polls the drive and polls the drive on boot until it errors out and then drops to the C drive. (I have also tried booting without the drive on and then trying things, no joy.) So, I know SOMEONE here has some magic in their hat that will say, "Oh, hey, you just need to . . . " and there will be joy in Fujidom. I have also reduced the pics included as much as possible. If they are too big for folks, I do apologize. Thanks for your troubles. -M
  17. I have recently gotten my XF551 up and running by replacing the Mitsumi d503 mech. The previous owner had routed around a broken power switch by cutting a trace and jumpering so it's always on. So I have been pulling out the power cord when I want to turn it off and inserting it when I want to turn it on. A pain, but oh well. Recently that power supply died with voltage going close to zero. I have several of these supplies since they're the same as the 1050, but before I start using another one I will ask this question: could the death of this power supply have anything to do with turning the drive on and off by inserting and pulling the plug? Related question - it would be very easy for me to add a generic switch to the jumpered area -- would any 'ol switch work?
  18. I sold one of these on eBay and it worked perfectly when it was listed... when the buyer received it, he had the following question: "Okay, so I unpackaged the drive, and as I was taking the drive out of the bubble wrap, I heard rattling in the case. A piece could be heard sliding around, clearly not connected. I opened the case and found a metal piece that is "U"-shaped, with little tiny black rubber-like rectangular pads on one side at the bottom, and each side of the metal piece. The piece is about 1 inch across and 3/4 inch top to bottom, and a fraction of an inch thick. Any idea what this is? I have looked for a service manual and cannot find one. I am hesitant to power up the drive with this piece not connected." Can anyone help identify what this piece is? I can't get a pic from him because FeeBay won't allow me to send him my email address. Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks, Roger

  20. The XF551B PCB is a reproduction of the XF551's drive PCB that was sold by 8bitdomain for somewhat limited quantities a few years ago. There's a photo of it here. Failing that, I'll take a whole XF551 drive, working or not. Heck, I'll take just an original XF551 drive PCB (the crappy single-sided one), working or not.
