  1. For Sale: I have multiple good, working 1010 tape drives and 1050 disk drives for the Atari 8bits. All come with good working SIO cables and power supplies. $45 for 1010s and $85 for 1050s + you pay actual shipping (to U.S. lower 48 only). Please PM me if interested. I would be willing to add some 'best off' diskettes full of auto-boot/auto-menu games for $4 dollars per diskette. I also have a few cassette games/programs for sale including all of the 'Learn a language' series: French, Spanish, Italian and German. You have not lived until you make your kids (or grand kids) sit through a cassette load of a game on your 8bit!!! It's a bit of history everyone should experience!! The pictures are of one of the 1010s and 1050s. When you PM me I will send you specific pictures of the exact device you will get. I test all these prior to shipping. With the 1050s I open them, clean out the dust, clean the read/write heads with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol, clean and lubricate the rails for smooth operation. I make sure I can boot DOS from the drive, read/write and format a diskette. I pack them safely. With the 1010s if they are working I don't touch them other than cleaning the outsides a bit including cleaning the tape heads. If they are not working, I replace some or all of the belts to get them working. If you want an original 1050 box (in poor shape) and original foam packing, let me know. I have at least 3 sets. Same for 1010s. I have several original boxes (poor shape) with original foam packing. Thanks for looking!! -dan
  2. A long, LONG, time ago, on a computer, now dead, and another, and another, and 2 laptops, and finally on a USB drive, also now dead, I put together an instructional guide to taking apart a 410 drive, with emphasis on simplicity, and allowing for a couple improvements and repairs. It has been months since then, but the effort to put the guide out never died, and now today, I can release the guide in a photographic step-by-step format, in numerical order, with sudo-progressive sections, featuring a new solution to drive mechanism stuttering, a comparison of an old, used model, and a new-in-box, old-stock model drive, an electronics repair and problem-analysis section with documentation, and a more condensed, re-assembly guide. I would like to do a complete analysis of the head alignment procedure, and electronics replacement\upgrade\repair with my new oscilloscope, as described in the official documentation, which is included in this guide, and I had intended on making a version of this guide as a video, so I will combine them, but free-time is short right now, so it will have to wait. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT NEW BELTS WORK BETTER THAN OLD ONES, SO IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, YOU SHOULD GET THEM HERE: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/260645-atari-cassette-belts-now-available-1010-410-xc12/ You will also note that the older model drive in this guide is using a few elastics in place of belts, this is not a permanent solution, and should only be used in a pinch, or in a testing situation where the belts would be subject to considerable use, for the sake of your precious belts! I hope it helps at least 1 person, then my effort is worth it. You will need 7-Zip, or another archiving program to extract the files. There are no programs or viruses in these archives, only pictures, text, and pdf. I take no responsibility for what you do, or fail to do, with this guide. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! And enjoy! http://www.4shared.com/archive/LlNW5P2uca/Final_Cut.html http://www.4shared.com/archive/UonUWLLsei/re-assembly.html http://www.mediafire.com/file/dzd8ks7j7o38boe/Final_Cut.7z http://www.mediafire.com/file/wpjqbzpa34qlj8x/re-assembly.7z
  3. Hi, more newbie questions. Does anyone know if it’s safe to buy say a 1010 cassette deck or a 1050 disk drive from the USA and buy a UK power supply for either of them? Is it safe for both the device and the computer to do it this way? Just asking because these devices seem to be easier to get hold of from America and slightly cheaper as well. Most of the time in UK it’s just bundles available. Cheers
  4. Good evening, Before I start, please feel free to comment on anything here where I may be doing something silly, as openly classing myself as amateur Atarian here after returning to using after over 30 years, and as a kid I would have never dared open the box up or do any of this stuff. I'm enjoying playing here, and objective is to both restore system to best it can be and have some fun along the way. Hope my ramblings may amuse and appreciate any advice. I recently posted this regarding graphics issues with my 800XL recently recovered from the loft : I'm pleased to note that following advice, I found a power supply that seems to improve matters in terms of interference seen on screen (understanding noise from USB was a serious thing after trying a few alternate adapters and a 'professionally' made cable (e.g. not by me)). USB power always noisy giving varying distortion, so moved on. I still note that I see out of place hashed pixels, which when compared to same software on an emulator is not very clean, so believe I still have a graphics issue and would love to know best way to fix (did add myself to pre-order list for a Sophia, and wonder if that would bypass issue, or not?) Unsure what this PSU was originally for - I hoard stuff so had a box full, but rated +5V 2.4A - switching power supply made by "CUI STACK" . Anyway it's not fuzzy, just cleaner pixel issues, but this post not about that (unless general system issue and related, please comment). So, I received my SDrive Max that I ordered from voidabone on Ebay. I guess could have put one together and may later build another myself, but I'm lazy, and also I like the case that came with it. Generally love this thing. As lost/discarded tapes, I only had a few cartridges, so now able to load a lot of software sourced from http://a8.fandal.cz/ Found a few gems I used to play as a kid. Start Raiders (lost cartridge somewhere along the way), Draconis, Thrust, Ninja to mention a few. Great nostalgia. Interestingly though, some ATRs or XEX files will not load properly / fully. Same will load fine on Altirra-3.90 , but that's not just the same is it Many will not load with odd screen corruption just as it seems to be about to complete. Two to note as examples, Defender ends like this: Then goes to a black screen. Hijack! is most odd, it seems to fully load: Thing is, the train is animated, but the clouds do not move, the helicopter does not appear and music does not play. Cannot start game, just stuck there but scrolling text moves ok. Again, loads fine on emulator. This is where I get silly. Searching around I find a CAS file, and Wav for Hijack! on http://www.atari.org.pl/tape/4/atari-smash-hits-4-hijack! I have an Atari 1010, but it has a broken tray, and PSU dead. Again, I found a compatible PSU, and soldered to connector and got power and motor works, and moves after OPT+Start and a key. So I'm thinking : I no longer have anything to record tapes with. I did check as recently grabbed a USB walkman device to capture some old mix tapes I also found in the loft, but it won't record, I used with Audacity to record to mp3, but I digress (often). Seems I started investigating the dead 1010 years ago not realizing it was the PSU as screws were out and was all open. I get thinking - What if I can find on the board where the audio comes in from the read-head and insert signal from a PC. I have a nice little "Maker Hart" mixer that I use to take sound from my work laptop, 2 PCs and an Alexa, and it has a 'record' output that sends a non-amplified signal out. This was mostly blind luck, as with it powered and connected to Atari, I was checking voltages where I thought it was (with Atari in START-Opt mode ready to load), and as I probed with a meter , i hear a slight audio buzz. Out comes the soldering iron and ......well: and before long, after playing hijack!.wav file in windows media: Then a false start: So I tried another file and after a time: So, went back to Hijack! and similar error. Then remembered I used to have to forward wind some tapes past the leader else they failed to load for some reason, so I started file a bit later. This time, loaded to about last 4 blocks, then heard a familiar change of tone and load failed. I realize perhaps a notification came up on PC, so disabled network via ncpa.cpl and tried again and finally in' in, have properly loaded title screen and i'm playing: Please note the pixel garbage on far right of picture, which i seem to get on a number of games I load. So conclusions: - There is nothing about this game it's self that my Atari doesn't like, as I can load it from tape (well sort of) and play it. - The S Drive Max seems to be source of problem loading some files. It's running KBr V1.2 , and I re-flashed it from PC after something silly happened and I seemed to be stuck on a reversed screen with touch-screen not responding. I realize from further reading around I perhaps could have done something else to re-calibrate, however it was on V1.2 anyway, so I assume my re-flash hasn't caused this (not 100% if was issue before, as I was still getting to grips with it). - I think lock-down has sent me a little crazy re trying my 1010 tape hack. This pretty much working first time has amused me a little too much Any comments on fixes for the S-drive loading issues or the slightly off graphics would be greatly appreciated. I believe it's quite a high percentage of software that will not load. Perhaps not 50%, but a lot. Take care all. TJ
  5. So I pulled my 800XL and gear from storage. It'll boot up to READY prompt, play a cartridge game, and pass all self tests. However, I'm unable to use any of my peripherals (2x 810 drives - one Happy, 1010 recorder, and 1025 printer). Any help isolating the problem is greatly appreciated. Here's what I've tried so far... - CSAVE: No apparent issues trying to save "hello world" program to cassette. Beeps and starts spinning while recording. Back to READY prompt and recorder stops when done. - CLOAD: Error 138. Apparently didn't record. RETURN key properly starts recorder playing but no noises. - LIST/LOAD D1 & D2: Error 130. Nothing. Neither drive will spin when turning computer on. OPTION-on goes straight to test screen. Drive switches are set to 1 & 2, and have tried swapping them, plus each individually as D1. Note: Drives will power up with momentary busy light when computer is off. - LIST "P:": Error 138. Nothing. Printer head resets position when turning on computer. I've tried all peripherals daisy chained and individually, swapping out the IO cables with same results. I removed all socket chips from the motherboard, cleaned everything and no difference. Need a new POKEY chip? Anything else it could be? Thanks for the help guys!
  6. Here's a few suggestions for solving problems if your tape programs don't load. This is a Hong Kong version of the 1010. A chance purchase from eBay. I'll skip the story line for later.... First up ,test as is. Poor loading, most tapes didn't get past a few strings and crashed. BTW you assume that it passed the power up , yes but more on that later. Clean the head, it was very clean to start So no difference. Change the belts, two on this model, as to much is already said on the forum on sourcing belts, I'll add a photo as to what I used. Changed the main drive belt, fairly easy on this model. The other is for the tape counter, left as is. Now an improvement I've got the states and capital tape to almost fully load. Clean the head again, pinch roller and capstan. Not too much progress, breaktime and research. Read up in the Atari service manual found online for the 1010 there are some service procedures and testing, if you have the test tape and equipment etc. Like I'm sure someone does? Lol Next day, (you can rack up some time waiting for the loads) !!! Clean everything again and recheck belts, I diddled around fixing the tape counter, the button wouldn't release after you press it. A bit of clean up and slight sanding of the slide mechanism with a spot of WD40. I'm running the unit less the top cover, so the tape and mechanism is visible. So there's some progress. Also for the heck of it I try a trick that I used to revive old diskettes as a last resort. Clean the media. With a swab and a bit of IPA (not the beer) advance and rewind the tape while holding the swab on the cassette tape, easy to access with the top of the recorder removed Not hardly any residue but did improve the load on some. Noting from the Atari service there is a speed adjustment if you have a scope and test tape. With a marker, I noted the position of the pot. Again easy to access with the top removef. Tweaked it up slightly above the original setting. Now a marked improvement, I keep track of the tape counter when it crashed, the load times are getting longer. There are a few more adjustments of the speed control pot to find the sweet spot. States and capitals tape fully loads. Just for the heck of it I pull apart the main board and remove the capstan/pulley and clean and lubricate. All in all more tapes load. Fairly reliable as I move on to the longer non basic programs. Even the tape that was in the recorder when I received it from the seller works. So now testing continues, that was the reason for getting a workable tape drive. Most ppl inquire why go with tapes at all when the new sio files are available to download. Soon I plan to offer the tapes for sale and some of the older titles, I guess all of them are old, it would be nice to know they work, and the challenge of bringing equipment and software back to life. As far as the belt(s) replacements, I sourced some assorted belts in two widths, one assortment flat style and one square. It used to be fairly easy to source belts during the VCR days, used to have several styles available and I went the route of measuring and ordering each belt for a reel to reel, but it gets expensive. One belt assortment from Ali Express and the other from eBay, turns out they were from the same factory both sources. One other note on the power up, it worked no problem at first,as far as power indication, but by a coincidence, when during testing tapes, smoke rose from the diode rectifier set, quickly unplugged, and a quick check of the power supply, one of my old ones, no output. Luckily, I had another and the 1010 powered up no problem.
  7. Hey There, If anyones interested, - Ive got a Stock of belts/kits available for - 1010 models (both Japan and Hong Kong), XC12, and also 410 kits on Ebay, Listings here (UK) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/sandimas666/m.html?item=122297041305&hash=item1c7978c199%3Ag%3A6okAAOSwopRYa7n2&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Outside UK - http://www.ebay.com/sch/sandimas666/m.html?item=122297041305&hash=item1c7978c199%3Ag%3A6okAAOSwopRYa7n2&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Anyone who is interested, but doenst use/like ebay/evilbay , can get these direct from me alternatively. just pm me for details. 8. Where can I buy new belts for the 1010 Recorder? Also... I'm new in this Forum and I can use some searching tips. I tried searching on all these strings and came up empty. What am I doing wrong? "1010" "1010 recorder" "1010 belt" Scored a 1010 for $20 today! Please read if you can help me with read errors. Thanks! Originally no movement but could hear the motor whirling so I figure just a belt so I offered $20 and the seller accepted. Got it home, Opened it up and could not find the belt!! Missing belt I thought... then taking a closer look the belt is melted onto the circuit board! It was like tar, crazy sticky. Got it all cleaned up nice. I have some replacement cassette belts of various sizes. I replaced the little belt on the tape counter and the main belt. Are there just the two belts? I’m not positive on the belt sizes I had but made sure the tension on new belts was good. All functions now seem to work, RR, FF, Record, Play, etc. However I can’t read or load any tapes. I wrote a 2 line BASIC program out with CSAVE it seemed to work but CLOAD fails with 140 Serial Frame Error or with 143 Checksum Error. Does this point to a wrong size belt or other issue? I did clean the heads. BTW on a game load, ‘States and Capitals’ I can hear some voice audio from the game so the audio channel may be working although maybe with some static noise. The data channel sounds right to me when I wrote out my small program. However, on read the sounds of the data load don’t sound right... sound like deep noises rather than high pitched sounds. It’s been 35 years but I don’t think the sound is right. See other comments on the pictures.
  9. Is it possible? I remember I had a "cassette copier" program which read the cassette data, kept the data in memory and then dumped it to another cassette. I would like something like that , but instead of writing to another cassette, write to a disk file. Another, (very ugly) solution I was thinking about was to load the cassette and use the headphone output of the speakers to connect the my PC to record the sound. The problem is I don't have access to any cassette player, except the Atari 1010. And I want to send a backup of Wordrace to atarimania I've being checking thrift stores for month for a decent priced and working cassette deck, without luck. Thank you
  10. Hi All Just a note to say that i have some various Cassette belts avialable for sale for the following Drives: 410 kit (all three play, rewind, FF) 1010 - Japan, Orange label type 1010 - Hong Kong Silver label type XC12 All are new and were manufactured less than 2 years ago, so there will be no brittleness etc from age. Ive got these listed on ebay, here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/sandimas666/m.html?item=121596841521&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Ive also designed a S-video board for the 7800, which details are found here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/236273-new-7800-s-video-board-available/ If anyone has any questions, please aks or pm me if preffered, cheers Richard
  11. Just unearthed these two beasts/beauties too. Have no PSUs but the 410 comes built in with an SIO cable. Just a fiver each, please - £5 each or take both for £9. Postage expected to be £4 UK, rest of the world somewhat more - please mail me for a quote together with your location. Note - totally untested as I don't have PSUs for either. That's it - thanks for looking and all the best. BAZ
  12. Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, but like pretty much everyone else, grew up on ATARI and haven't ever really left it. I have alot of software on cassette, but my 410 program recorder has given up the ghost recently. Anyone out there have a working ATARI 410, 1010 or XC11/12 cassette drive that they're willing to part with? I've checked CL & ebay of course, but every ad is for a non-working (for parts) or "untested" unit, which I have to assume means "not working". I am willing to pay (not top dollar) of course, as long as you can confirm that it does work (load and save programs). Please let me know if we can work something out. Thanks!
  13. Hi all, I've downloaded several 1010 field service manuals online, but none of them have the silkscreens or the schematics included. I'm trying to repair a couple of the 1010C decks, and it's tough when you can't get any part values. Does anyone have these schematics that they could scan in or link? Thank you in advance!
  14. I recently bought a 1010 cassette player with all the cables etc,. Plugged it in, it played fine/fast forward, rewind, etc,. But the problem is it wont show any video! I got 2 cassette tapes for it. Introduction to sound and introduction to basic/programming. The audio plays perfect. I can hear and listen to the cassette, but the problem I have is that there NO VIDEO what so ever. Am I doing something wrong? any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks in advance.
