  1. I have looked at the schematics and determined that there is no real difference with the schematic. am i missing something? it appears to be identical..I would like to use one for the other and i can do the wiring.. Douglas
  2. Hi Guy, I have searched the forum for an idea on this but can't seem to find anything (might be this flu bug I have at the moment making my brain fuzzy!) . Anyway I am thinking of getting hold of an Atari 1200XL for my collection. I was wondering what you guys think is a reasonable price for one that is boxed and one that isn't? I have located one that is boxed but it is untested and missing the power supply but it does look in good condition. They what $180 USD for it and I am unsure if that is steep? I know that 1200XL aren't that common anymore and are totaly non existent in New Zealand Cheers Rel
  3. Hi everyone, my 1200 XL is missing its cartridge side panel (part no. CO60096). Best Electronics has no more stock of these little pieces, but if anyone here has a spare one, you'd make me really happy (and my 1200 XL whole again) ! Cheers, F.
  4. Good morning, everyone, As some of you may already know, I started adopting 1200XLs a couple years ago as part of the return to my Atari hobby. In the process, I managed to adopt 57 units, several with their original boxes (and some with their packaging styrofoam). However, two weeks ago I lost my job of ten years, and everything has changed; now, I'm forced to end a big part of my hobby to cover my wife's medical expenses of the past year (total knee replacement, medications) and our basic living expenses for the immediate future until I can sort out employment. My lost job could be someone's gain. Having invested around $10,000 in 1200XLs alone, I am now going to be rehoming them to either an individual or group of individuals willing to pay $7000 for 50 of them. This will include any and all original boxes and/or packaging, and power supplies, of course. Also included: 1200XL-related manuals, guides, and promotional materials. This averages the cost per system to $140— and considering the current selling price on EBay, it seems like a very reasonable deal. A hefty lump sum, I agree, which is why I'm posting this strictly as an interest check before I go forward with making an official post that includes photos and itemized listing. Given my present financial situation, I cannot really break up the 50 systems into individual sales, sorry. Frankly, we need the cash. This is a fantastic opportunity, regardless. Seven people, for example, pooling their funds to secure the entire lot and then reselling them would spread the cost out. Ten people coming together, even more so. And twenty-five individuals working collectively drops the per-person investment to under $300 per person for 2 1200XLs each. Again, this is NOT for only 50 1200XL systems: I have a sizable collection of original literature and original packaging/materials that will be included, bolstering the overall value of this package offer. If the interest isn't present, I'll reluctantly need to turn to EBay to rehome the lot, furthering my losses, of course— but I would prefer to see these go to those who take their Atari hobby as seriously as I do. Pickup would need to be local for the obvious logistical reasons— but also affords the opportunity to, in person, appreciate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for what it is. NOTE: I'm currently in the process of inventorying/re-verifying the rest of the Atari hardware I've adopted these last few years, and would be open to include a significant majority of it for an additional $2000. This would include Atari 800s, 800XLs, 130XEs, XEGS systems with keyboards, 1050 drives, Indus drives, at least one Trak drive, Rana drives, 850s, and so on. My hobby inventory can be viewed at any time by visiting the link below, but keep in mind that I am still getting the listings finalized (I'll be keeping a few things, and software/books will NOT be a part of the overall rehoming effort). https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BxNhdFR69ypdnINzIh4QK4v4JrjPLsGVvGxOEEvUMH8/edit?usp=sharing Finally, I understand that some may want to make an offer on the entire lot. Contact me by PM, and we can discuss it if your offer seems reasonable, especially if your intentions will benefit the Atari community. But, please! no lowballing or trying to profit from the sudden dire straits my wife and I have found ourselves traversing. I will do everything I can to make sure that the buyer(s) are satisfied that this was a one-of-a-kind effort to help us while taking on an entire collection for the Atari community. Submitted for your perusal and consideration, Timothy Kline Below is a sneak peek inside my Atari 1200XL vault.

  8. Good morning, everyone! I am trying to collect my materials for replacing the LEDs on a 1200XL in my collection, and the LED bulbs arrived yesterday. However, the packets are labeled anything from 2v to 2.7v and variances both between as well as outside of that range, depending on the color. The variations I expected, after reading up on LED lamps. However, the 2v-etc voltages of the lamps are making me anxious, because I thought they were supposed to be 5v (with variations related to color of lamp). As if that wasn't enough, I happened across a site explaining the myth of a 5v LED, as seen here: http://led.linear1.org/myth-of-the-5-volt-led/ The last thing I want to do is drop in one of these lamps (much less an entire header that needs replaced LEDs!), and plow 5v through bulbs that can only handle 2v-etc and watch the 1200XL light up in the space of a smoking VBLANK. Could somebody offer me some direction? Will it be okay? Are there any modifications I need to make with these bulbs so they'll work with the Atari's 5v system? Or am I being anxious over this thing called "forward voltage" when the lamps will be just fine? Thank you, in advance! Timothy Kline If anyone needs to know what I'm hoping to use, I purchased the LED lamps shown at the link below: http://r.ebay.com/xc1GZz
  9. Restoring my Atari 1200 XL computer. About 1/3 of the keys are not not working. Want to buy a working replacement keyboard OR a working Atari 1200 XL computer.
  10. Computronics magazine was mostly about TRS-80 computers, but it included a brief section about industry news more generally. The June 1983 issue includes some interesting news about Atari's relationship with its retailers:
  11. I'm trying to restore the 1200XL I found in the trash years ago. The keyboard was nonfunctional, so I ordered a replacement Mylar from Best. I cleaned the PCB and key caps, reinstalled everything, and...nothing. Just the reset key and maybe one other key worked. I installed the included thin wafer with gold contacts that goes between the Mylar and the PCB and this time, the O key was stuck on; a few other keys worked but not many. Best says not to remove the layer of carbon that's built up over the gold PCB contacts that make a connection with the circuit traces on the Mylar, but I'm wondering if that's the weak link in the equation. Any suggestions for what to try next?
  12. Just got a new (to me) Atari 1200XL off eBay. Been a long time since I've been on this forum, btw!. :-) Anyway, I plug it in and all I get is the Atari logo with the color bars. None of the keys do anything. Including the reset. I plug in Pac Man, plug in a joystick and Pac Man plays wonderfully. All of my games work but I can only play the ones that accept fire button as start. I haven't opened it up yet to see if it's something stupid like being unplugged. But I don't know as much about Atari (despite owning 2 400's, 600XL, 800XL, etc...lol). Any clues? Thanks!
  13. I just received a 1200XL and living in PAL-land I'm thinking about converting it to PAL. I read the instructions for the bitsofthepast GTIA adapter board and wonder whether the whole "changed OS" part of the conversion can be substituted by installing an Ultimate 1MB. If so, is it still necessary to install a 28-pin socket for the ROM adapter? Is there a way to keep the "Atari Rainbow" screen and just patch the OS to work with PAL GTIA/ANTIC? Anything else to get done while the machine is open? Do the various (easier) video mods work with the PAL conversion? Happy Holidays!
  14. Hello there, I am building a 1200Xl from scratch. On the motherboard there are what appear to be decoupling capacitors that are located between pin 8 and pin 16 on the memory chip. C16 - C23 I am wanting to install gold plated machine pin sockets that come with a decoupling capacitor installed in the frame of the socket. The Atari schematic calls out 0.1uF on the motherboard. The Capactor in the frame is also 0.1uF That would give 0.2uF per memory chip if I installed the caps in the board. Do I just replace the caps on the MB with wire, omit them entirely or leave the caps in the motherboard? Thank You Douglasmemdetail.bmp
  15. I hope it is appropriate to post "for sale" items. Cleaning out the attic, and selling some old Atari 8-bit stuff on Ebay. I was a big Atari geek back in the day, I'd like to see this stuff go to somebody who will appreciate it, instead of the landfill. SpartaDOS X cartridge with SpartDOS Toolkit disk. www.ebay.com/itm/301844912080 Original Atari literature, lot of 5 pieces: (1200XL users guide, 1982 Atari Product Catalog, etc) http://www.ebay.com/itm/301844916921 I'm also selling some Atari ST stuff, if you are interested check out my ebay user page: http://www.ebay.com/usr/chris82369
