If so, what version of the Happy Enhancement did you receive and install? There are H, L, and X versions, and I need to know what kind they are supplying. Or did you have to call B&C and give them more info about your 810 drive? There is a similar issue with the Rev7 upgrade rom. You need the serial number of the Enhancement of <5000 or >5000 to get the correct rom.

Dear Atari 8-bit fellows, I have long assumed that, in order to ensure that their game or software could be used by any buyer, the Atari 8-bit software publishers all offered floppy disks that could be read by a standard 810 drive. In other words, single sided, single density, or 90 KiB. But apparently this is not true. Some software required a higher capacity drive. Apart from drive-specific DOS, does anyone know of any software that requires a 1050 or XF551 drive? As a bonus, does anyone know where I can find a list of some "specific" Atari 815 software? Atari Word processor (version 815) Atari Accountant series (General Accounting System; Accounts Receivable System; Inventory Control System) Anything else? Thank you for your help! -
My 810 is having some problems... surprise, huh? Well, it's able to READ disks thoroughly since it boots into DOS 2.5 no problem. The trouble comes when I try formatting disks. The drive head goes all the way to track 1 as you would normally expect and works its way to the edge of the disk closest to the spindle hole, but after that it very slowly starts to work its way back, maybe taking one step every 15 seconds. Eventually it'll stop and go all the way back to track 1 and repeat the process endlessly, eventually spitting out error - 173. I've tried lightly cleaning the drive head with alcohol and a Q-tip to no avail.

Greetings! I've got a small lot of Atari drives that I'm selling. Atari 1050s: Two that are complete, one that is just the board. They all power up, but two won't read disks. There is a drive for the board, but the cable to the read head is severed. Atari 810s: Two that are in good physical condition and one that was disassembled (and a couple of cracks in the body/case). Like the 1050's they power up, but haven't read a disk since our move. All drive power up, and the disk does the initial spin. Drives attempt to read the disks, but eventually fail (disk read error). Most have power supplies included (or not, your choice). Price - $20 each or make offer. You can choose all or some. Will work a deal for for multiple drives or the lot. Available to local, or anyone willing to pay the shipping and some packing materials. Shipping from North Carolina, 28078. I'll get pictures up and post them soon. So I pulled my 800XL and gear from storage. It'll boot up to READY prompt, play a cartridge game, and pass all self tests. However, I'm unable to use any of my peripherals (2x 810 drives - one Happy, 1010 recorder, and 1025 printer). Any help isolating the problem is greatly appreciated. Here's what I've tried so far... - CSAVE: No apparent issues trying to save "hello world" program to cassette. Beeps and starts spinning while recording. Back to READY prompt and recorder stops when done. - CLOAD: Error 138. Apparently didn't record. RETURN key properly starts recorder playing but no noises. - LIST/LOAD D1 & D2: Error 130. Nothing. Neither drive will spin when turning computer on. OPTION-on goes straight to test screen. Drive switches are set to 1 & 2, and have tried swapping them, plus each individually as D1. Note: Drives will power up with momentary busy light when computer is off. - LIST "P:": Error 138. Nothing. Printer head resets position when turning on computer. I've tried all peripherals daisy chained and individually, swapping out the IO cables with same results. I removed all socket chips from the motherboard, cleaned everything and no difference. Need a new POKEY chip? Anything else it could be? Thanks for the help guys!

Over the past few months I've been given many Atari hardware items and software. These belonged to a friend of mine who was an avid member of the local Atari user group. He died about two years ago, and his son passed away about a year ago. I have been receiving various bits of documentation, paperwork, hardware and software from their family members in the time since they passed away. I've been asking what has and has not been archived and I've been doing my best to make sure that it has been archived (thanks to Allan Bushman for scanning and taking care of this 8-bit material-- he's such a great archivist!). Until this point, I've not given too much thought about using some of the hardware like the 1050/810 disk drives. These were all stored in an outdoor barn/shed. All of the hardware (the computers included) is very dusty and I'd be shocked to learn that any of disk drives work at all. A couple of months ago a friend of mine suggested that he would like to see an Atari load-up some floppy disks to play some games. We can do that already, as I have a disk drive emulator for the Atari and various AtariMax flash carts, but he wants to see some real 5 1/4" floppies booting to some game or other. In addition, included in the last batch of Atari items that I was given, was quite a bit of the Atari 8-bit public domain PD library on 5 1/4" floppy. It might be neat to load some of that stuff up on real hardware. My question is: is there a FAQ or repair/restoration manuals and/or videos on how to go through and restore Atari 810/1050 disk drives. I guess, at the minimum, I'd need to learn to clean/lubricate gears/motors/heads. Adam P.S. I also have several Atari 410 program recorders, but I'm not sure that restoring those would even be worth the effort. Or is there a reason to have these around?

Also cleaned mylar to stop sticking key (the "A" key was filling the screen with A's.) From the pics can see the keys no longer stick and the system will load and run games. I have two 810 side boards with what look like ROM upgrades, using piggybacked chips. One has a data separator board, the other doesnt: I also have a side board with a windowed FDC: Are these of any interest for ROM dumps?

Well I got my 810 up and running! And what better way of testing it then by writing a ton of disks? What is some of your favorite Atari 400/800 compatible floppy software? Games, utilities, the whole shebang!!

I was testing an 810 drive yesterday and initially I thought it was broken. I had the slide switches set for drive ID 3 and it was not responding. But I decided to test all drive IDs and I found that the drive always thinks it is drive 1. Using it as drive 1 seems to work ok. I was able to make a boot floppy and save/load some test files. Has anyone else seen this? If I clean the switches will it fix the problem? Or are there other fixes I should perform like maybe installing new switches?

Too many power supplies everywhere. I have 12+ plugs for my Atari and half are for the low voltage stuff. Can't I just run all the 9 volt gear off one 9VAC 3.4 Amp Atari brick? Alternative solutions? eBay Auction -- Item Number: 251020503191

I recently acquired an 810 disk drive in a big lot of old 8-bit stuff. I love the way it looks, partly because it's the size of a small animal carrier. Anyway, I'm not positive if it is working correctly, and I was hoping that others have some insight. Let me preface everything by saying that I tested the 810 with an 800, 800XL, and XEGS. I used two different power supplies and two different SIO cables. Okay, so I have only two disk-based games: Flight Simulator II and Barge (a cheap K-Tek game). FS2 loads just fine, and you have the option of going into demo mode. When I do this, the demo will run for about 30 seconds, then freeze. The instrument panel turns white, and nothing moves. The computer hangs. The computer does not seem to be trying to access the 810 just before this happens. I also have a 1050 drive. FS2 works just fine with it, and the demo just runs indefinitely. The 810 loads Barge just fine. So, I don't know if there is a problem with the 810, or if FS2 has some problem with it. Is there some diagnostic utility? Also, I don't have any blank disks for testing. Thanks for any help!
