  1. What are your top 10 favorite Atari BASIC games from magazine listings? This can include games that use machine language subroutines. If you can include what magazine each game came from, that would be helpful too.
  2. Hi, WTB Atari ANALOG Magazine Issue #7 Thanks!!
  3. While browsing ebay, I stumbled upon this controller https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Analog-Arcade-Controller-for-Atari-2600-Console-Video-Game-System/164292462985 It's basically two Atari paddles stuffed in metal box, but instead of knobs, the two potentiometers are connected to gimbals like in RC plane controller or in 5200 joystick. The two connectors are still Atari 9 pin. What system and software would require controller like this?
  4. I am seeking a few of the earliest Atari 8bit ANALOG magazines to finish my collection. If You have any extras of issues 3 and 7 let me know. Thanks!!
  5. I recently acquired an Atari video music on Ebay fairly cheap and working ? but it happens to be missing one of its side wood panels . Considering its rarity is there way to get a replacement peice for it? Also another question I noticed theres different fonts on various pictures of the Avm is there different versions of it? I own the one of the top with "model c240" But most people I seen with it have the bottom version is there any differences besides minimal design change? Thank you- kiko
  6. I just recently got an atari video music from ebay for a fairly cheap price . It seems to be in good shape but however it is missing a peice of the wood side panel . Is there anywhere to get a replacement for that peice considering the rarity of the avm? Another question I noticed theres models that contain different text on the front panel . Is there different versions of the avm? Or was this slight change in design ? I got the model in the top picture Thank you
  7. Modded my Atari paddle to a new design with an aluminum volume knob and some adhesive woodgrain drawer liner. Here's how I did it:
  8. The creator of the MiniVex analog controller is back with more. MiniVex I Hand Made Metal Cased Analog Vectrex Controllers coming soon to eBay. Here are some teaser images from the creator. This time the controller buttons will be in various colors including Black, Gray, and Red. Possibly some others in the future too. Keep your eyes peeled and searches saved. #MiniVex #Custom #Vectrex #Analog #Controller #ClassicGamesAndCarsFan https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?&_ssn=classicgamesandcarsfan&_nkw=MiniVex Update with description text from the listing: "Brand-new controller for the classic Vectrex system, featuring a tough steel case, analog joystick, and a rapid fire feature for button #4. Flip a switch on the back of the unit and hold down button #4 for rapid automatic fire! Use the rotary pot to adjust the firing rate to your liking. Unit is about 3/4 the size of the factory controller, see photo #5. Buttons are available in three colors as shown. NOTE: I have a very limited supply of each, so I cannot mix colors...they must be ALL red, black or gray. Plugs right into the Vectrex, no adapter needed. These units are hand-made by me, so they're not, and never will be, cosmetically perfect. Guaranteed for 30 days from the day you receive it...if it fails within that time, I will repair it at no charge. Will ship anywhere EBay's Global Shipping goes. Paypal only, and thanks for looking!"
  9. I've got a new discovery of a special joystick that can get digital control games on the Atari 5200 & 2600 like Meteorites & other 80s versions of Asteroids to be more analog for fine-tuning the placement of your shots. This can also be helpful on Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator and Wizard of War. On the flip side this variance in movement of your onscreen character may not be such a good idea in certain digital games because it may slow you down when you need to always be full-steam-ahead (ie. PacMan, Dig Dug, Frogger, Q-bert, etc...). It also will not be a preferred method of control with 5200 games that already have the benefit of innately working in an analog way with an analog controller (Missile Command, Super Breakout, Dreadnaught Factor, and Star Wars Arcade). But on the certain digital-control games which require specific shot placement or character placement, it's going to enhance your control. I am really excited to tell you that Beamrider and Gyruss are completely beyond awesome with this new method of control. I have yet to try Pitfall or Pitfall II with this method, but I can imagine there'd be a benefit with them as well. So I'd like to go over the details of how to set this up on the 5200. First you will need an original Playstation flightstick made by Madcatz. This controller has a switch to enable digital or 'pulse' digital control. The following adapters will be connected to that flightstick: 1] A PC gameport to Atari 5200 15 pin adapter. (Source: bohoki here at Atariage makes them) 2) An Atari/Amiga controller 9 pin to PC gameport controller adapter (Source: Ebay seller Ikonsgr74 makes them) 3) Best Electronics Atari Systems to Sega controller Convertor cable (Source: Best Electronics- call their 800 number to order) 4) A Tototek Joypad Counverter (Version MD). This allows Playstation controllers to work on a 9 pin port of a Sega Genesis. (Source: Tototek website) Alternate method: Replace adapters 1,2, and 3 with a Masterplay Clone adapter, and user the Tototek with it. One more method: Use a PC gameport to 5200 15 pin controller adapter with an Innovation SmartJoy Emulator adapter (Playstation to PC gameport adapter). The latter adapter is not easy to find at a reasonable price these days. If you want to see a presentation/tutorial on this, here you go:
  10. I've got a new discovery of a special joystick that can get digital control games on the Atari 2600 and 5200 like Asteroids (2600), Gravitar (2600), Meteorites(5200), and Star Trek (2600 & 5200) to be more analog for fine-tuning the placement of your shots. This can also be helpful on The Earth Dies Screaming and Wizard of War. On the flip side this variance in movement of your onscreen character may not be such a good idea in certain digital games because it may slow you down when you need to always be full-steam-ahead (ie. PacMan, Dig Dug, Frogger, Q-bert, etc...). But on the certain digital-control games which require specific shot placement or character placement, it's going to enhance your control. I am really excited to tell you that Gravitar is especially awesome with this new method of control. I have yet to try Pitfall or Pitfall II with this method, but I can imagine there'd be a benefit with them as well. So I'd like to go over the details of how to set this up on the 2600. First you will need an original Playstation flightstick made by Madcatz. This controller has a switch to enable digital or 'pulse' digital control. The latter mode is similar to what is offered by the Atari Trakball for the 2600 and Atari 8 bit computers when it's in joystick mode. It delivers pulses when making smaller movements to slow things down a bit. In other words, it gives a pseudo-analog movement of your character/ship. To get it to work on the 2600, you'll need the following adapters between the 2600 and the flightstick: 1) Best Electronics Sega Genesis controllers to Atari Systems Adapter cable (Source: Best Electronics- call their 800 number to order) 2) A Tototek Joypad Converter (Version MD). This allows Playstation controllers to work on a 9 pin port of a Sega Genesis. (Source: Tototek website) Alternate method: 1) Buy a hard to find adapter made by Innovation that converts Playstation controllers to 15 pin PC gameports called the Smartjoy Emulator Adapter. (Source: Ebay (as of right now these are quite expensive)) 2) Obtain an inexpensive 15 pin PC gameport to 9 pin Atari/Amiga/Amstrad controller adapter (Source: Ebay seller Ikonsgr74) Methods for getting the Madcatz Flightstick connected to your 5200 are found here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/284238-new-discovery-for-going-beyond-digital-control-on-your-5200-games/?do=findComment&comment=4140266 If you want to see a presentation/tutorial on this, here you go: https://youtu.be/igynk3Tfy6E

  12. Last week, Eric dug deep in his attic and found boxes of Atari stuff that has been hidden away for 30 years! Included were hundreds of pages of hand-written A/W/A game notes, more correspondence with Atari 8-bit magazines, and some 5 1/4" floppies that were still usable after all these years. One of the disks was really warped and unreadable, but Eric had to perform disk surgery to extract the media from within the protective disk cover and insert it into another disk that wasn't quite so warped. We had to wait for a serial to USB cable to arrive so we could use our old SIO2PC to dump the games. I have updated the document covering the Anschuetz/Weisgerber/Anschuetz 1980's game development. I have added a change history so you can see what new sections have been added. There is quite a bit of new stuff, some related to the newly discovered games we uncovered in the attic boxes. I have also attached a separate game development notes document that has scans of hundreds of pages of game development notes, code, and bit-mapped graphics. These are organized by game so you can compare the development notes to how the games turned out in the other document. I have also attached a zip file with 3 ATR self-booting BASIC disks with 3 games that were found on Side B of some of the 30 year-old-disks. These games are Phoenix, Piracy, and Ramses' Revenge. Ramses' Revenge is really worth taking a look at. It takes a minute to initialize, and is meant for two players, but it can also be played with one player (you'll just always win!). These three games were some of the very first that we wrote within a couple months after getting our Atari 400 and teaching ourselves BASIC in 1982. Phoenix was literally our first game and was written within a couple weeks of getting our computer while trying to learn to program. Hopefully you'll enjoy taking a look at this peek back into the history of Atari BASIC game development from the 1980's! 13. Hey everyone, I wanted to announce my new Electronics and PCB Design course on Udemy. I worked on it for 18 months and tried to create something that would enable people to learn electronics and PCB design in a single course, have fun, and not be overwhelmed by math and too much theory. The goal of the course is to teach electronics both theoretically, but practically as well with lots of bench work. And then once the fundamentals are learned, we dive into PCB design from schematic to manufactured PCB. Those that are interested in building add-on boards for various retro system, but haven't made a PCB, then this is perfect for you. Also, those that "hack" electronics, but want a deeper understanding of analog, filters, amps, and circuit analysis, you will find this course helpful without needing a Ph.D in math Here's the information, links, and discount code... (along with some images of project developed in the course; PCBs, simulation, bread board work). Crash Course Electronics and PCB Design @ Udemy -- 135 lectures, 87 hours. 50% Discount Code HAL9000 https://www.udemy.com/crash-course-electronics-and-pcb-design
  14. Got something unique for everyone here who might want to try a really different analog control method which is effective on a good number of 5200 games. This mod brings a new purpose to your Atari 5200-compatible Wico Command Control Splitter cable along with your 2600 analog paddles. This project goes a step beyond just modding a 5200 controller to have a paddle added in place of the joystick which many have accomplished over the past number of years. It allows for two paddles to be utilized simultaneously on certain games that might use two fire buttons (ie. Moon Patrol, Tempest, Dreadnaught Factor) or on games that have only one fire button, but two axes of motion in action (ie. River Raid). I'm figuring this way of control is new territory for all Atari fans, which could give just about anyone here a new desire to retry some of the old favorite games they may not have plugged in for quite a while. 5200 games are really quite unique when compared to the games of the other 80's game systems because of the analog aspects of its controllers. This mod takes advantage of that, and gives you a totally unique and fun avenue to breathe new life into some of the classics. Enjoy
  15. (not mine) Vectrex "MiniVex II" controller, with Rapid Fire, twin analog joysticks Brand-new, twin joystick controller for Vectrex! It's got a tough, all-metal case. Size is about 3/4 of the factory unit, see photo 4. The two joysticks are analog, like the factory controller. The left and right cables correspond to the left and right joysticks, and a toggle switch on the back selects the left or right cable for button inputs, so you can use the buttons with EITHER joystick, when only one cable is plugged in, or you can plug in both cables and use BOTH joysticks at once! (The toggle switch prevents overlapping button inputs.) Thus this controller is compatible with Robot Arena, and (hopefully) the upcoming Stramash Zone. Now, if those homebrew designers would only grace us with Crazy Vector Climber, and Vectrex Widow, and Cloak & Vector... The buttons on this controller are smaller and stiffer than the factory controller, but there's a remedy for that...button #4, most often used for firing, has a rapid fire feature. Just hold it down and bangbangbang! The other toggle switch on the back selects rapid or normal fire, and with the rotary pot you can adjust the firing speed to YOUR liking. This controller is not cosmetically perfect...I make them by hand, so they're not going to be perfect. Please see my other auction for a simpler, single joystick version of this controller. I'll guarantee this controller for 30 days from the day you receive it. If it fails within that time, I'll repair it at no charge. Paypal only, will ship anywhere EBay's Global Shipping goes, and THANKS FOR LOOKING! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vectrex-MiniVex-II-controller-with-Rapid-Fire-twin-analog-joysticks/222794918982?
  16. Back in 1983 I was lucky enough to have my game code published in ANALOG Computing Issue 13. The game was Space Assault, and although it wasn’t too amazing, it was fun to write back when I was 16 years old. Recently I’ve been writing a series of articles about writing this game in Atari BASIC for a cool web magazine called We Are The Mutants. The series is intended to share the joys of teenage programming for those who didn’t get to experience the fun of those days. I’m trying to keep things super simple and may not always be 100% technically accurate, but it’s been great to dig through my old code again. I know you guys here are way beyond my level, but if anyone is interested, please check it out. I have four “lessons” so far, with many more on the way (approximately monthly). You can find them on my author page here: https://wearethemutants.com/author/webmikey7/ By the way, I’m using Altirra via Wine on my MacBook Air and it works great!
  17. Hello Atari 8-Bit Community! We were inspired by the many kind responses about our Atari BASIC game development document, our newly posted 1980's Anschuetz/Weisgerber/Anschuetz Atari BASIC games, and our Antic Atari Podcast. For those that missed it, here are the links: Forum post with Atari BASIC game development document and 1980's Atari BASIC games: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/268424-1980s-anschuetzweisgerberanschuetz-basic-games-release/ Antic Atari Podcast: http://ataripodcast.libsyn.com/antic-interview-297-robert-anschuetz-eric-anschuetz-john-weisgberber-antic-magazine-games In this post, we are uploading version 2.0 of the Atari BASIC game development document. This version enhances the original document in many paragraphs, and also adds some new and very interesting sections to the document. This version includes our original 1980's type-written (we didn't have a printer) instructions and programming notes that were submitted along with our BASIC games to Antic, COMPUTE!, and A.N.A.L.O.G. Perhaps even more interesting, we have also scanned the correspondence letters from these magazines for programs that were accepted and rejected for publication. The table of contents indicates these new sections (Development Notes pages 46-71, and Magazine Correspondence 75-91). These are scans from documents that hadn't seen the light of day since the 1980's! Thanks go out to John Weisgerber for saving all of this information for the past 30 years! We are still trying to dig up the old design notes and the graph paper that we used for character bitmaps! They are probably in the attic, closet, or basement somewhere. We hope you enjoy these new additions. Robert Anschuetz Eric Anschuetz John Weisgerber Anschuetz-Wesigerber-Anschuetz v2.0.pdf
