  1. Hi everybody, I picked up an 810 with a Happy Enhancement a few weeks ago, along with a stack of manuals and instructions. The stack contained a sheet of paper that describes "REV 7 ROM FOR 810 HAPPY". If you have a Happy-modded 810 with an older ROM, the instructions tell you how to install a version 7 ROM into the board; it also describes the ROM types that were used on your Enhancement or Upgrade board, depending on serial number. From what I understand, the ROM is customized with your board's serial number, that's why you had to give Happy Computing (or now B&C) your serial number when requesting an upgrade. Attached is both a color and grayscale scanned copy of the page, download one or both, it's the same scan. I've already posted this scan in a different thread (below), but I'm posting it here as well so people who have 810s with Happy Enhancements or Boards can find this document easier.... Eventually when I've gone through all of the docs I received and scanned in stuff that doesn't have scans out there already, I'll post everything on `archive.org`. Thanks!
  2. Hey. Some weeks ago i got a 1050 drive with LED display mounted on front panel. I've foud that is an early (?) version of Happy Warp , and I decided to recreate the schematic. You can find the oryginal topic, pictures, rom, schematic etc here: http://www.atari.org...ic.php?id=11300 The eprom is marked HAPPY 3 Can anyone recognize this version? eprom: hw_V3.bin The drive is not working, someone was trying to repair it but with no luck, now is my turn
  3. If so, what version of the Happy Enhancement did you receive and install? There are H, L, and X versions, and I need to know what kind they are supplying. Or did you have to call B&C and give them more info about your 810 drive? There is a similar issue with the Rev7 upgrade rom. You need the serial number of the Enhancement of <5000 or >5000 to get the correct rom.
  4. Hello fellow Atarians, picked up this item on ebay back in 2011. I used to run a search for "atari prototype" and if anything looked interesting throw in a bid. Won this item sold by a seller in Maryland with a description of "Mock-Up for Happy Drive CPU", stored it away and found it in the closet the other day. Thought you might enjoy checking it out. Cheers!
  5. Hi, I was just wondering if it would be possible to upload code to a Happy that would support much higher SIO transfer speeds such as pokey divisor 0. My thinking is that if the 6502 on the 8-bit can handle sending/receiving data at pokey divisor 0 rates, surely there's the possibility this could also work with a Happy drive if the appropriate code was uploaded to the RAM in a Happy. Obviously transfer would be fastest if it was done from the Happy track buffer, but I think there would be enough RAM to just upload an enhanced transfer routine, and have space for a track buffer. I think Hias's SIO code is only about 1K, and a Happy (1050) has either 6K or 8K of RAM.
  6. I recently aquired an Atari 1050 drive with a Happy Upgrade (genuine). I tried to run 1050 diagnostic software against it, but that doesn't work. I don't have any Happy software for this, and I'm 'green' when it comes to the Happy drive enhancements. If someone could point me to an .atr, .atx, or .scp of 1050 happy diagnostic software, I want to check RPM, track zero sensor, etc.... as out of my stack of test floppies, it has a problem with a few of them that other drives don't. I have other questions as well: Are there different versions of the firmware ? If so, can I upgrade by burning an EPROM and replacing the existing ROM on the Happy board ? If so, which ROM should I use and where can it be found ? What version of the software should I use, and where is a good place to get .atr, .atx, .scp, etc of the software for this drive ? Thanks.
  7. Hi, recently bought a 1050 where a Happy-Clone from IRATA (Berlin Germany) is installed. It also runs flawlessly, only it has a few more contact surfaces (see picture), and I can not find ANYWHERE documents. So I wanted to know if any of you still have information about it (Schematics, Switches like "Speed on/off" a.s.o.) It is also recognized by Happy-Tooldisk 1 as Happy, and the tests run completely, except for ROM positive - But I had the same with another Happy-Clone that it hooked right there, which is also logical, because the values of the EPROM are not 100% those of the origin. I just want to know what else I can do with it, that is, what else I can connect and above all where on the PINS. And important : What features are included? tya for reading ?
  8. Hi, I have written a utility to dump the ROM from a Happy 1050, Lazer, or similarly modded disk drive to an Atari DOS file. The sources are at https://github.com/e474/DUMP1050/ if anyone wants to play around with them (I am a beginner with git, and haven't written any 6502 code for a long time). The program is based on source code from the Happy Programming series in the German Atari Magazin, 1987, issues 1 - 5. I'll be adding the translated articles and source files from the magazine in the near future. Hope this is of interest to anyone interested in programming Happy, Lazer or similar drives - any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks to Nezgar for testing an earlier version! dump1050.atr
  9. Hi, I thought I would start a separate thread for this, just in case anyone comes along later, and wants copies of these utility disks. I'll post a link to this article in the related threads - http://atariage.com/forums/topic/279029-slowdefective-1050-drives-with-lazer-upgrade/ and http://atariage.com/forums/topic/289957-interesting-homebrew-1050-happy-mod-pics/ I have archived off/preserved the disks that came with my Lazer (laser) / US-Doubler upgrade for my 1050. Unfortunately, the disk with the Lazer software was damaged, but only near the end of the disk, and all the sectors in that area contain only zero bytes, so I think the program itself is OK. I have written the Lazer software ATR that I made back to a real floppy, and tried that with the Lazer drive, and it seems to work fine - all the main menu options load (apparently) working programs, so I think this image is good. I've also included the Happy software I got with the drive - it's Happy 7.0, and appears to be a hacked version - I haven't tried the official Happy 7.0 software with the Lazer drive though, so can only assume it's been hacked. I do recall using this disk bitd, though that's all I can recall (at the moment). Also included is the Archiver Fix disk - this programs the Lazer to emulate an Archiver/The Chip, so you can use the Archiver/Editor software - I checked by programming the drive with menu item "E - Lazer Archiver", which was from LPS, and then loading the Archiver/Editor software (also on the disk), and reading tracks 1 and 2 (I assume this is a reasonable test). There are also some other Archiver Fix utilities, not sure if they work too, but they are probably worth a try if you have problems with menu item "E". Final disk image is "US Doubler Utilities" double density disk - it has a lot of menu programs, etc., on it that work with the US Doubler. This disc was supplied to support the Lazer drive in US Doubler mode. If anyone from any of the Software Preservation projects wants to include these images they are more than welcome to do so. Hope this is of interest! lazer_copier_master.atr lazer_happy_7_0_copier_master.atr lazer_archiver_fix_master.atr lazer_US_Doubler_utilities_master.atr
  10. Hey all, With a keen eye I spotted this 'untested' 'Modded???' drive on eBay. Sure enough it had a genuine Happy board, later 8KB SRAM revision, and Controller, but the mechanism needed some TLC. It was definitely stored for a long time in a humid environment because there was a bit of rust, and Aluminum oxidization that cleaned up nicely with an IPA wipe-down. The stepper motor and the top clamp spinner were totally seized. The stepper released with a little force and seems to be behaving now, and the top spinner and rails received a healthy dose of 3-in-1 oil. Now onto the testing! As you can see in the 'before' pictures the lower switch was busted off. This switch selects the write protect mode, which operates a little differently than the standard DIY mods in that the LED is an indicator of Write enable, even when in the lower position - It will actually turn off and on live depending on what the optical sensors see. The middle and top positions function as usual (always read only / always allow write) so I spent this evening replacing the broken switch with a spare On-Off-On switch. I didn't have one with the side-mount pins, so I fabricated it by soldering the bendy leads from the old switch onto mine, and then onto the PCB. It was a little tricky, because too much heat and the graft would let go. It's also not the same 'flat paddle' style switch, but it's not too practical to search & wait for a custom order for that... But I might still replace it I come across one in the future... so it matches that little paper printout The board has 4 wires that connect to a pin-header on the Happy board itself, and to the write-protect sensor & emitter pin header at the back of the drive. The removed sensor/emitter header then plugs directly into the controller board so it can monitor, and intercept or pass-through the real write-protect status. Anyhow, I believe there's been some interest in the 'Happy Controller' companion board for Genuine Happy 1050 upgrades, and maybe some detailed pictures may help someone someday in reproducing these. I've used Happy since forever, but its my first time with my hands on this little add-on. The upper track-buffer toggle switch is interesting, as it will actually still operate in Ultraspeed SIO, but with long gaps between each sector on a regular skew disk similar to USDoubler on a standard skew disk. I haven't yet tried a disk formatted with Ultraspeed skew. If you'd like to see any other views, let me know!

Diskette label was marked by hand with "WS" (assuming "Warp Speed"). Unknown if that was written by previous owner or by OSS, Inc. or Happy Computers, Inc.

  13. I have a fully working Happy1050 Disk drive for sale, complete with 9V power supply. The case is clean with absolutely minimal yellowing - photos available on request. The 'Happy' upgrade allows the 1050 to write disks at true double-density, gives a much higher SIO transfer rate and various other imaging and backup features. The 5.25" floppy containing the Happy diagnostic and copying software will be provided. I am asking either a flat £65 or alternately an direct swap for a working "Ultimate1MB". Given how bulky the 1050 and power adapter are I can only offer this to a buyer within the UK. I am expecting the postage to be around £10 for basic ParcelForce delivery and somewhat more if insurance is required.
  14. Hi all, Back in the day when I traded my first Atari in for a 130XE with 320Kb and 6 different ROM's () I also got a Atari 1050. It was a Atari 1050 with Happy, tracking sensor, write-protect switch and density identifying led's. Unfortunately the 1050 is not working so great anymore. I don't use it as often anymore, but I really would like to so it working properly. Where would I start with restoring the Happy 1050? I did some diagnostics a few months ago. I remember the RAM test being failed, so maybe that's the only problem. Are there perhaps some more diagnostics available? I doubt it is an original board, but I made some pictures. There are some IC markings scratched off, but I'm sure someone can tell me what is what :-) Also, I'm looking for someone that can alter a front bezel of the 1050. Because the tracking sensor's casing broke when I moved to another house several years ago. So now the display is hanging outside the case Louis
  15. So at Saturday's Open House at the Personal Computer Museum we received an incredible donation. Coming in at a staggering 28 boxes of (mostly) Atari stuff, we haven't even BEGUN to sort through all of the vintage goodness in here. However, it deserves special attention and I thought I would share it with the community. The donor used to work with Richard Adams of Happy Computers Inc. and all of his computers and drives were totally modded and tricked out. He was kind enough to leave us some instructions from the switches and so on. If that wasn't great enough, there was a Heavy-Sixer Atari 2600 (in the original box I might add) and dozens of original text-only label Atari 2600 carts, and an ORIGINAL MAGNAVOX ODYSSEY complete in the original packaging (and even the OUTER packaging). You have to see it to believe it. There was even one of those Atari Mickey Mouse pins in the package. There is more to discover, but for now go to this link (with pictures) to see what we received: http://www.pcmuseum....n_raszewski.asp Let me know what you think!
