  3. While working at some Stella improvements, I came across M-Network's E7 bankswitching. All known ROM dumps for E7 are 16K, but this is only because most of them are padded for easier emulation. And none of those use the 2K RAM theoretically available in E7 (including an unnamed prototype, which got into my hands). This is how the ROMs really look like: Bump 'N' Jump: 8K, no extra RAM used (which explains the standard F8 bankswitching ROM from Telegames) Prototype: 8K, 256B of extra RAM Burgertime: 12K, 256B of extra RAM Masters of the Universe: 16K, no extra RAM used In theory E7 supports 16K ROM and 2K of RAM (1K + 4* 256B). Then I wondered where Kevtris got the information about E7 when there is not ROM existing, which uses the hardware. I turns out, that E7 is designed quite clever. So that it allows a wide range of hardware configurations, up to the specs which Kevtris described. But now it became a bit mysterious (at least for me). E.g. Burgertime has a 1K RAM chip on the board. Where they already that cheap that they could afford wasting 75% of it (or did this have technical reasons)? So how do the boards of the other ROMs look like? Do they also have unused hardware? And when I analyzed the ROMs, I found this: the RAM is activated by using ffe8 (prototype and Burgertime, which is fine) the 16K version uses the hotspots ffe0..ffe6 (as exepected) the 8K ROMS use the hotspots ffe4..ffe6 (so they skip the lower 4 spots) but Burgertime uses ffe0/1 and ffe4/5/6 (so ffe2/ffe3 are skipped, which seems pretty odd) The board for Burgertime can hold two 8K chips, but one chip is only 4K. So I suppose the mapper "sees" the 4K twice and there it doesn't matter if it is accessed by ffe0/1 or ffe2/3. But that's pure speculation, waiting for confirmation from people (Kevtris again) who understand hardware much better than me. It would sure be interesting to have a look at the boards of the other games. And of course all those unreleased prototypes. Maybe one of them really uses all the nice features of E7. As of now, it seems that my Elite demos are the only available ROMs which use them. Anyway, I just wanted to share my findings. Maybe someone can provide some extra information.

    These are my 3rd party games for the Atari 2600 I'm getting pretty close to finishing the M-Network.
  5. The following was Inspired by reading up on Space Battle for the Intellivision and after discovering that Space Attack for the Atari VCS works on the VCS emulator for the Jaguar. What has always fascinated me was how this was supposed to be a Battlestar Galactica game. For years this game eluded me, but once you understand to start the game by moving the joystick, and the deploying your squadrons by holding down the button and pushing left, right, and up to launch, it becomes much easier at that point. Strangely it was the X-Wing Commander hack that worked on the Jaguar and those changes inspired me to really dig into the Space Attack rom, changing sprites to give a more look and feel, coloring matching the enemy ships, the radar screen, and other aspects with show screen shots. Changing the enemy fire from red to blue, and many other changes. Honorable mention is the 2008 fan hack of Space Attack to Battlestar Galactica. Good to see there is other BSG fans out there, and also glad that we have perhaps hacking tools over the last ten years. For all of you who loved the show like I did, or just would like an altered version of Space Attack, here we go!
