  5. tl;dr: Play games from 21st century systems and post your times! For the second season in a row, it is time for the Modern gameplay tracker. The following text is stolen from Thegoldenband with additions by Iwantgames:) who used to run this tracker at the beginning. Here are the links to previous seasons of the tracker: 2018 So what is this? The basic idea is to post what games you played during each week, and for how long. You don't have to time it down to the minute (though some of us do), and estimates are acceptable. Then, at the end of the week, the statskeeper (that's me) totals everything up and we find out which games and platforms are seeing the most action. Each week, we have top 10 lists for consoles/computers and for individual games. Guidelines: 1. Be sure to list the system, the name of the game, and the length of time you play. Please note if the game has any alternate titles by which it's better known. If you list multiple games, please group them by platform. If you play on a backwards-compatible system, e.g. Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One or PS2 games on PS3, the game should be listed under the older platform's name. This also means that games predating 2000 played on a modern system should be posted in the classic games tracker. e.g. PS1 games played on PS2, GB/GBC games played on GBA, Wonderswan played on Wonderswan Color, Windows 95/98 games on a newer PC and so forth. 2. Each week runs Monday through Sunday (at midnight), though exceptions may occur around New Year. Try to post your times no later than night to Tuesday in your local timezone. I will generally wait until Tuesday evening Central European Time before compiling the stats. If you post after stats have been posted, your times will be counted for the next week. Feel free to indicate in your post which dates your times relate to. 3. Playing on actual hardware is preferred, although emulators are certainly allowed. In some cases (homebrews in development, rare arcade games) there's no alternative to using an emulator. 4. Our cutoff year is 2000. That is, eligible consoles and computers have to have been first released somewhere in the world after 2000. Basically any systems released around the PlayStation 2, XBox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance or after. Anything released before this time period (including the Sega Dreamcast) please post to the Classic Game Tracker The same goes for computers: we count Windows XP or newer, but not 98 or older; Mac OS X or newer, but not OS 9 or older; and so on. 5. Arcade games released on or after January 1, 2000 are permitted. 6. You don't just have to post a bare list of times -- comments, stories, gripes, and helpful hints are always encouraged! If you're struggling with a level, got a new high score, or have some thoughts about what's great or what stinks about a particular game...well, that's the kind of stuff that makes this fun to read. How to make the statskeeper's life easier: - If you post a big list of games, please consider alphabetizing them first (after grouping them by platform). - Posting your times in minutes, rather than hours + minutes, makes things a little simpler. - Even if you don't know the exact time, it's better to post a specific number and say it's an estimate. If you say you posted a bunch of games for "between 20 minutes and an hour", I'll just average everything out to 40 minutes, but it's much better to have a sense of which games you played more and which ones you played less. - If there's room for confusion or ambiguity, please address that in advance so I don't have to research it myself. Non-US releases, homebrews in progress, alternate titles, and expanded re-releases can get especially tricky. That about covers it. If you haven't participated before, or if you did and got busy with other things, consider taking part in 2019! You may find that it has some interesting side effects -- I've found that keeping a log dramatically changes how I think about my own gaming, and mostly for the better.
  6. This guy has one heck of a fetish but Shovel Knight's not giving up his helmet!
  7. He's "going through a phase" in this video!
  8. It took some doing but I finally acquired this sweet upgrade!
  9. I beat a boss and earned two trophies AND got a pretty sweet upgrade! I'm doing this all "in the raw" with no FAQ, no walkthrough, and never having watched anybody else play!
  10. I noticed this review by CGR last night of a PS4 woodcover skin. If there ever was a modern console accessory more perfectly suited to the Atari 2600 fan, I think it would be this:
  11. I picked up this title at release because.... Because it had the Final Fantasy XV demo code in it. XD I played that demo almost immediately and really liked what it showed off of the game. Definitely needs some polish... but that's not what I'm talking about here. Final Fantasy Type-0 is an HD upgrade from a PSP title only released in Japan. I only got to play an hour or so of the game, but my impression so far? I'm not sure what to think. There is a lot of story here, but I've really just barely scratched the surface. There's four crystals (big surprise), a war between nations, an Empire, and a lot more. The opening sequence and cutscene last quite some time, so it's definitely not a game you can just jump into without some time. (I guess that's a given for any RPG?) Once past the big opening, I finally get to try out this game and it's... gameplay? I don't really know how to describe it. It makes me think of an action RPG with doing real-time fights and attacks. This would be pretty cool if the main character here had some kind of real weapon. Unfortunately, he's armed with cards. You can throw the cards for a range attack, but you can also "cut" the cards to charge up some sort of super or special attack. I'm still learning the ropes. I had to finally stop at one point because I ran out of time to play and my interest was kind of dwindling. I need to give it more time before I make a final decision, but it's possible I come to love it. Only other note here? The HD upgrade is very visible here. The look and design really makes me think of a PSP title. It's not really something I'd expect as a "PS4" title as far as visuals go. Normally, I wouldn't judge by that angle, but the game is a full cost title ($60), so I would hope for something that looks a bit... better. I'll post again when I get more time to really wet my nose. Anybody else pick the game up? If nothing else... Did you get it for the Final Fantasy XV demo? XD
  12. I'm mostly a PC gamer and my last real modern console was an Xbox 360. I've been gaming for how many decades now? Anyways, I've never had an issue with companies not only offering multiple ways to handle something on a gaming system (audio, video, controller, sometimes power even) but they have always included at least a basic method of connection to TV or accessory. The lack of required cables/accessories to connect your new device is acceptable to everyone on a $60 controller these days? What a bunch of shit! I got a PSTV because they were $20 and I've been wanting to play TxK forever now. With much reluctance, I finally broke down and just purchased a wireless PS4 controller for my PSTV with the idea it'll make for a solid backup/2nd controller for when I get the PS4/PSVR later this year. Mind you, it's really hard to justify the cost of said controller when for $60, there's a ton of other things you could get (Used Dreamcast setup, Atari Lynx, 3 more PSTV boxes, a whole lot of pizza, etc. etc.) but, I did it. Done deal. I was on my way to finally playing another Llamasoft masterpiece. This was supposed to be a fanfare moment, not a WAH-wah moment. Half way home, I rip the box apart. To my shock and awe, it was missing the micro usb cable to connect the controller to the PS4 or PSTV. The words that would utter out of my mouth after reading the back and finding the asterisk are everything you could possibly expect. If any of the ones you're imagining involve alphabet letters like F, F or F, then you're right on the money! I simply give zero alphabet F's how commonplace this micro usb is supposed to be, but damn it Sony, you're supposed to include that. It's part of the package. That's how you not only connect the overpriced $60 controller but also charge it. Shame on you. What was supposed to be a 25-minute trip turned into a full featured movie. I return only for the person to help me unlock the controller from their security bracket for purchase, check me out a micro usb cable. I need a usb cable for the PS4 wireless controller I just got, I can't believe it didn't come with one. He grabs one off the shelf, I buy it for the extra $5 and I'm on my way. Not thinking for a second to even question the guys ability to do the job tasked at hand and picking the right one for me. I'm yet down the street half way again and to much of my disappointment and not really to be surprised I guess, it's the wrong cable. I failed. Once again, I put too much trust in another person to do the simple task to do their job in grabbing the cable that I very clearly verbally requested. Truly, it's my own fault. I said PS4 multiple times. It blatantly says for PS3 on the bottom of the box. It's what I get for not looking. I go back a 3rd time to return and exchange it. Needless to say, I'm not at all happy. Thankfully the exchange was in and out and even though I told her there was nothing wrong with the cable, she still exchanged it out with the code of defective. I give up. Who cares, I was on my way home again with all the required accessories to connect an alphabetting F controller to the goofy PSTV. Seriously though? Screw Sony. I wouldn't have had to go through all that shit had they done proper what gaming companies have done my entire life and that's include the required accessories for connection in the first place. I can't believe this is considered acceptable.

  20. By "best" I don't mean most powerful (the current one would always win), nor do I mean the most technically advanced in its day (that would have to be the PS3). I'm talking about legacy, and sheer awesomeness. Consoles only please.
