  1. I borrowed an Atari/Sega adapter for my Intellivision 2 and Telegames Super Video Arcade consoles from a friend last month, and got some interestimg results. This particular adapter was made by Grips03 back about 3 1/2 years ago, and it really is opening opening up new possibilities for controlling games on the Intellivision- with even some very cool mice and trackballs. Check it out:
  2. I was looking on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I don't even remember how I found these now. But I noticed these 2600 boxes in a mixed loose and boxed lot. The artwork on the silver boxes caught my eye as they were not what my brain would normally associate with those titles. The Galaxian art seemed familiar but I couldn't place it. There were no pictures of the backs of the boxes in the listing. I did some googling and came up with nothing. Searched Atari Mania, nothing. So I went all in and won the auction. They arrived and I was very excited when I saw the backs of the boxes. It turns out I should have recognized the Pole Position art as a variation of it was used on the 5200 box. @Ballblaɀer also pointed out to me that the Galaxian box appeared in an issue of Atari Age magazine in 1983. Also Tim Lapetino pointed out on my FB post that he came across the Galaxian art when he was researching his Art of Atari book, but it didn't make the cut. I am very happy to have these in my collection now. The promo boxes were in amazing condition for being printed in 1982 & 1983. The boxes did have standard copies of Galaxian & PP carts an manuals inside. My guess these were added by someone along the way. The rest of the carts in the lot were in amazing condition and the Kaboom box was missing the cart. An odd lot for sure. Enjoy.
  3. And all the other speech from Pole Position? Do we know?
  4. I've tested and completed my review of the latest and greatest Atari 5200 controller adapter made by Atariage member, Ikonsgr. It's essentially a bohoki-clone that enables you to use PC 15 pin controllers on the SuperSystem. In the video, I've demonstrated a good number of analog and digital PC controllers (gamepads, keypads, joysticks, steering controllers, and flight yokes) being used to effectively play 5200 games. Some of these controllers have the ability to be used as both analog and digital controllers (Makopad PC gamepad, Radio Shack gamepad, and the Vortex 3D), right-hand/left hand switching digital gamepads (Gravis PC Gamepad and the Reveal Gamepad), and there's even one which has the ability to switch between self-centering and non-self-centering ("dead-fish stick") analog joystick control. Check it out:
  5. This is the current HSC game. Just wanted to talk about it a bit outside of that. A few quick thoughts: Was this game released before Pole Position 2 was in arcades? I'm kind of meh about this version. As usual for the 5200 it has good audio. Being a person that doesn't really understand the abilities of the 5200, it seems like it lacks some graphical polish that 'could' have been there. Graphically, it's still so blocky. The road signs are blank. The cars are put together like a step pyramid. The explosion effect is uninspired. The only thing I like about the graphics is the scrolling, which is superb. I do like the analog controls here, it works and it works good. The reason I ask about PP2 is because this version has plentiful game modes, but only the original track. Seems like the 5200 could have handled more tracks. After playing this quite a bit lately, I really have a renewed appreciation for the 7800 version of Pole Position 2. I guess I'm disappointed, it seems like the 5200 could have atleast had some more refined graphics. Like the car exploding into pieces, and maybe some kind of art on the road signs, like even the ATARI fuji ...something simple.
  6. Hi, everybody. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm writing because I'm interested in buying a copy of Pole Position for the 2600, and since I'm not familiar with the game's different variants, I went online to do a little research. I came across something called the "Grand Prix Kit". It's an insert for the game which consisted of two items. The "Grand Prix 1984 World Championship Wall Chart" is a fold-out poster with pictures of the different Formula 1 drivers from that time, along with pictures of the circuit's race tracks and some of the race cars. The kit also included what appears to be a sheet with images of the different drivers' cars. I went on eBay and Amazon in hopes of tracking down either the kit by itself or a CIB game with the kit but didn't have any luck. It seems like it might be a scarce item. I did notice that, on both the poster and what appears to be a magazine ad from England (since the game price in the ad was in British Pounds), the box that was shown was the silver label with the while lettering, as opposed to the silver with the arcade lettering (with the triangles embedded in each letter). On eBay, there were several sealed copies of this variant with the white lettering; it had the multiple languages on the back of the box. I contacted one of the sellers who was nice enough to open one of them, but these items were not included. The only two 1983 variants I'm seeing online are these two that I've mentioned: the silver label with arcade lettering, and the silver label with white lettering and multiple languages. And so I've come to you guys for some help. Has anyone out there ever seen these items, and do you remember which box variant included them? I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. Looking forward to your responses. Take care, everyone.
  7. I haven't been around these parts much, as I've moved a few bits away from the classic console scene. My gaming interest has gotten into something a bit....... larger. For those not on KLOV, here's a short back-story: In 1980, there was a pool hall/arcade across the street from my house. I found out that a kid from my school's parents owned it. We became friends, and I started hanging out there. In 1984 it burned down. I was pretty tight with the family by then, and when they decided not to re-open, asked for my help in moving stuff out of there. For my efforts, I was given a Lunar Lander and a Paddle Battle(Pong clone). 32 years later, I'd moved a lot closer to the home of this family, and gotten into assembling my own home arcade. I'd picked up Super Pac-Man, and a Dig Dug cocktail. Both required some work, but were made functional fairly cheaply. I was making my way to our local Dollar store late one morning, and the folks who'd owned the pool hall happened to be outside. So I hobbled on down to talk to them. It had been some time since I'd seen them, as I never know when they are home. We talked a bit, and I mentioned I had just gotten and fixed up a Dig Dug. I was asked if I wanted a Poker machine, and I explained that I'd already had one. But, because I'd helped move all of their other machines down there, if they had Poker machines, they just might have the old games still. So, I asked. They were on their way out of town, but they told me they thought they still had a few of them. I arranged a deal with them for when they would return in April. Sadly, there was only 1 left from those days. And it was in rough shape. VERY rough shape. But it was mine, if I could haul it away. No money changed hands, they simply gave it to me. There were some who said that even a machine they'd played BitD, in that condition, they'd want to be paid to take it. That's not my way. I wanted this cabinet, because of the memories it gave me. I'd wished they had more of them(there were 15 in total), but alas, the others had been junked over the years. Only memories remain. My work was cut out for me. There was the remains of a mouse nest in the bottom, along with lots of debris from trees, or whatever it may have traveled under. The top was straight up missing, the back door had been pried open at some point because a key had been broken off in the lock, it was water damaged, T-molding coming off, chunks missing, etc. Like I said.... rough shape. I'd known I was in for a challenge, because of the probability of PCB damage from the battery. In that, I got lucky. It cleaned up nicely, and the board stack worked. In fact, the machine worked. For all of 5 minutes. *POP*...... screen went to no signal. Well, that was better than expected, I suppose. I went around back, and turned it off. I did a little investigating, and found some components on one of the AR-II boards had blown(that was the popping sound). I proceeded to finish the clean-up job, since it was too late to go out and buy parts. I had already bought new "Big Blue" capacitors for the power supply, so I replaced them just for GPs. The next day, I got a fresh start on it. I pulled the AR-II board, went online and matched components. Rode out to the parts store and got replacements. Once they were in place, fired it up again.... Well, that's an improvement. I pulled the boards again, this time I installed the "test point mod", to ensure good power flow to the PCBs, re-seated all the socketed chips, and that brought me to this point: The "red" in the monitor kept going in and out, and it had a nasty curl at the top. It was playable at this point, but a bit annoying. I was advised to re-cap the monitor, and see what that did. Given it's age, and that I know it hadn't been worked on for 30 years, it was a good idea. So I ordered the kit, got it, and got to work. 3 hours later(it was my first time), here we are: Looking good, Billy Ray! Feeling good, Lewis! Awww, shit. The "red" was still intermittent. I did a little poking around, and found the problem. The harness connector from the PCBs to the monitor was damaged. Fortunately, I'd gotten a complete power supply/harness replacement, just in case. I went to the spare harness, cut the same part off, removed the old one, put the new one in, and BOYAH!! Been fine every since. Now comes the "fun" part........ that poor cabinet. That poor, water damaged, dilapidated cabinet. I'd cleaned it pretty damned well, but it still has some discolourations from the fire. Nothing for that. I'd gone out and gotten a bottle of wood hardener, and used pretty much the whole thing on it. It worked pretty well, to be honest. I then glued the T-molding back in place, I used some Gorilla glue and a tie down strap to glue the back bottom back together. Not "good as new", but definitely better than "this thing's headed for the scrap heap". In all, I spent several months and about $75 rebuilding this thing. I would say it went well, considering it was a serious learning experience. It now stands next to the Lunar Lander that once gave up it's spot for it. That's right.... when they bought the Pole Position cabinet, that was when Lunar Lander made it's way to the back room for storage. I remember that day.... I helped re-arrange the line-up that day. For that, I got to play-test it a few times. =D It's also a hit with my friend's kids: Moral of the story? Sure..... there's one. If you want something, go for it. It may take some work, and others may scoff at you for it.... but you can do it.
  8. Is Pole Position (1982) really possible to do on the ColecoVision, 1983-style? ~Ben
  9. I have recently come a cross these games and am new to the atari community in general and was just wondering how I could tell if these are legitimate cartridges. The 2600 cart is Quadrun and the 5200 one is Pole Position. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share with me.
  10. I am selling my set of reproduction Vectrex overlays for Minestorm and Pole Position. I originally bought these from VectrexMad! a while back but have since acquired the original overlays so I do not need these ones. These overlays were professionally screen printed in four colours. It has better colour registration than the original overlays and like the originals, they have White ink on the back layer. The overlays are Die cut to precision. I have not used them since purchase so they are in Excellent condition. I am willing to sell them as a set or individually. Also included here is an Original Minestorm overlay. This has some wear and a small chip on the upper right corner. PM me if you're interested. Will ship internationally.
  11. Hello everyone, I just joined the forum and I too have some questions about the Kat5200 emulator. I'm trying to run "Pole Position" on the thing and just like the op I'm having problems. I"m specifically can't get my controller to communicate with the game when I launch the game. I can get the controller to respond within the emulator when I calibrate it when I initially open the emulator to prepare it to run the game. But the controller won't work when I play the game in the emulator. The controller I have is a Phillips Recoil GGE909 usb controller. Oh, another problem I have with the Kat5200 is enlarging the box I'm playing the game in. It will only let me play in a small box about 1/32 or less the size of my computer screen. The emulator has the "full screen" option but after I click on it and have a check mark highlighted by it and then fire up the game in the emulator all I then get is that small box that I'm referring to. Also, just in case if anyone was wondering, the computer I'm running the Kat5200 on is a Windows7 machine. Any ideas on what I can try to fix both problems? Thank you all very much for your time.

  14. My friend and I have an idea for a ROM hack of pole position and are trying to use the source dumped here by Curt Vendel but haven't gotten anywhere in a while with it. I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to how to get it compiled, what compiler to use or possibly another source dump that's compatible with DASM without a complete re-write. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and you will be noted on the credits of the hack and you will get a gold star for being generally a good person. Thanks, -M
