  1. This is the last problem I have in my game that I partly solved and have some understanding of, but I did not get to the finish line with and left it sitting for a while. All music and Pokey driving is self / hand implemented. I get periodic "phase shift" sound problems when playing my sounds in stereo (later on I will provide hearing samples for this if needed, can't do it at the moment), the effect is as if the sounds shifts to the side for some time. I did study this earlier in the process, and looked at the waves in Audacity, and there I could see the visual reason for it, it happens when one channel is shifted a bit with respect to the other so that positive amplitude in one overlaps with the negative in the other channel, something like this: L: __--__--__-- R: --__--__--__ This is the part that sounds bad IIRC (the sound is away / empty). When they are following the same amplitude sides like this: L: __--__--__-- R: __--__--__-- it sounds much better. I presume this is due to to wrapping around one of the clocks in either of the Pokeys and the two having different phase for a short while before the other one also wraps to beginning. Or at least that was my best guess. But, anyway I tried to modify the Pokey init routines or updating routines I could only make it a bit better or worse, but never get rid of the problem. The fact that the effect is a bit different on the Emulator and on the real HW does not help either (but it is there on both). I also looked into the RMT module to see how they update the sound, there all L/R coupled registers are updated as close to each other as possible. When I do this in my code, the effect is even worse for some reason, what I actually had to do is to shift the L and R updates away a proper handful of cycles. This sounds a bit worse in general (each single sound on the two channels is "too separated"), but the phasing effect occurs less, but it is still there periodically. So what am I missing here? How should the stereo init and update be done correctly to avoid this? Or is it a feature I have to live with? Does it have anything to do with the sound being only 64kHz mode on two channels and 1.79MHz full 16bit on the other two? Please also forgive me for very superficial of understanding of sound and music, it is one of my weak points
  2. So here is one for you. First, the stereo board in question is a self-made copied design of mytek's board, just with the PIC / ps/2 keyboard interfaced skipped. I am sure the board is fine, there was a problem with a wrong (too slow) 4066 used at one point, but mytek helped me, and now all my boards have the right chip. I have a total of 5 now (I practiced SMD soldering on them if you wonder), one of which is actually through hole and that one is for sure 100% compatible with mytek's (assembled with the same parts as his). Now, the curiosity is that on my beefed up 130XE (U1MB, VBXE, Sophia, UAV, stereo) most programs detect the stereo (with the exception of Yoomp, but that one is known to randomly fail with this) and act accordingly. On my yet to be beefed up 800XL (gadgets on the way, so far it has UAV and 74F08) many programs fail to detect the stereo, some do. Most notably IK Enhanced Edition refuses to play stereo (it does on 130XE). Stereo as such works, games that do not switch to mono on not detecting it play stereo nicely, including the said Yoomp. I swapped the stereo boards around, it does not seem to be it, it is the computer. I am not fully confident that it is 100% stable and OK, I did have some issues with it (like refusing to work with its original OS ROM and failing RAM test, but fine with the same OS version burned into another EPROM chip). I did not yet try swapping Pokey chips instead, so far those always stay with the computer, probably the next thing I should do. Has anyone experienced something like this and can tell me what is going on?
  3. So this will be a thru-hole based Dual Pokey board that incorporates a U-Switch type function and a Dual PS/2 Keyboard based on the TransKey-II (TK-II) hardware/firmware. It'll be pretty close to the same size as Lotharek's Stereo Board, except all the connectors will be on the lower end of the board close to the original Pokey chip, as opposed to the upper end like on Lotharek's board. This will allow better clearance in an XEGS, where the cartridge port resides. This is fully compatible with the U1MB BIOS Stereo detection and enable/disable via the U1MB /MO port. Here is the tested circuit... All of the parts get soldered in place, thus the need for the ICSP PIC programming port connections on J2. Most all of the components, other than connectors J1-J3 will reside inside the footprint of the two 40 pin Pokey sockets, and need to be of a low profile so as to allow the Pokey chips to be fully seated. This design specification has now been locked in and tested on real hardware. So the next job will be to lay out a PCB, and then have a few sample boards made for final testing. I will not be selling these boards, but just like the other TK-II boards I previously designed, they will be uploaded to OSH Park for purchasing by anyone who is interested. This is a DIY project, but hopefully someone will step up to make boards for those that do not possess the necessary skills to do so. Time line for this project is approximately one month, with boards being available on OSH Park soon after. The PIC MCU firmware is the same as used on the existing TK-II product line, and will also be in-circuit programmable with the JOY2PIC Atari-to-PIC programmer. Latest Firmware Download is available here: ataribits.weebly.com/design This should be a nice addition to the Stereo Board collection - Michael
  4. We're moving and downsizing, and I can't justify a dedicated gaming television any more This TV has great picture and solid Stereo sound. Only stopped using it as our regular TV when cable went fully digital. Fantastic TV for using with classic consoles, can connect multiple ones to it. Swivel stand, includes working (generic) remote. Inputs include S-Video, composite and cable, and also has outputs for recording or capture and cable pass-through. It's available for free! but pick up only in the Chicago-land area (Algonquin, IL 60102) as shipping costs would be prohibitive. It's the perfect showcase for your classic games!

  6. Hi all, I usually modify rmt player routine to create my own stereomode, but I'm a bit confused about existing alternate stereo modes built in rmt player... for instance: ELI STEREOMODE==2 ;* L1 R2 R3 L4 ldy #$ff v_audctl equ *-1 lda trackn_audf+0 ldx trackn_audc+0 sta $d200 stx $d201 sta $d210 ;???? lda trackn_audf+1 ldx trackn_audc+1 sta $d210+2 stx $d211+2 lda trackn_audf+2 ldx trackn_audc+2 sta $d210+4 stx $d211+4 sta $d200+4 ;???? lda trackn_audf+3 ldx trackn_audc+3 sta $d200+6 stx $d201+6 sta $d210+6 ;???? sty $d218 sty $d208 I have marked confusing lines with ";????". What is the purpose of those lines? If there is some purpose, why there is no such line under lda trackn_audf+1 block? -is it a bug?
  7. How many mods has someone actually squeezed into a 600XL? I love the small size, but realistically I know there is limited real estate inside. It would be great to have everything: U1MB, VBXE, stereo pokey board, u-switch, TK-II or AKI, Rapidus, and I'd have to do the 64k and a/v mods. Is it doable or do I need to play it safe with a larger model?
  8. I decided to get an NES Toploader, I really wanted a NES 8-Bit unit that low-budget made, but I can not get any response from the guy. So where I am at now. I got a toploader and ordered the NESRGB kit for it, it really looks like an amazing kit. I have read a bunch and watch a few videos but it does not seem that anyone is getting stereo (or at least 2 channel audio) out of the kit. The video jack that it comes with looks like a total hack! I ordered the famicom multi port kit to install on my NES and it has a pin for left and right audio, but the NESRGB only has 1 audio out channel. Does anyone have a work around, can I just split that 'mono' out and at least get audio to both speakers? I am using that famicom multi out to a SCART cable that will feed an OSSC with stereo speakers attached, I would like both speakers to get audio.
  9. Hey there guys and gals! I hadn't seen it discussed on here before so I thought I'd point out a neat product I learned about though one of my favorite YouTube tech podcasts: https://youtu.be/X6Z81G8hw8w https://coolnovelties.co.uk/coolnovelties/sega-master-system-1/264-sega-mega-drive-1-genesis-rca-cable-with-stereo-sound.html It seems like a really nice clutter-free way to get stereo sound out of your Model 1 Genesis without a tangled mess of RCA cables, and at $15 shipped to the US it's quite affordable. I went ahead and ordered one and I'll let you folks know what I think of it once it arrives in the mail from the UK in a week or two.
  10. I've started a project to recreate W. Carlos's Switched on Bach album playlist using the Atari8 as a sound source. A goal on my bucket list is to finish it. I intend to use the MIDI Music System to send data to other Ataris that will act as sound synthesizers. My original thought was to have the ability to play the songs in real time; something Carlos couldn't do in 1968 when the album was published. Then I thought of something else that lead me to something else until I asked, "Am I ever going to play any of this music in front of anyone?" The use of multitrack recording software (Audacity) could make this whole operation a lot easier. How much easier? I wanted to test it by recording a music file created using Advanced Music System(AMS). Record a track for each of the 4 voices, Pan the voices left or right to create a stereo effect, sync the tracks using timing marks, and then export as an MP3 file. I chose PRELUDE1.AMS from my collection, a bit of classical music. Sounds like it could be Bach but I am guessing. It took about 3.5 hours to produce the recording on my second try. Once I relearned the AMS v1 commands it started to come back rather quickly. The Prelude1.AMS file was loaded and a measure to help sync the tracks was inserted at the beginning of each voice. The mono recording is of all 4 voices recorded on a single track. The stereo recording had each voice recorded on a separate track and each track was panned left or right of center. You should be able to hear the difference. Prelude1_ams mono.mp3 Prelude1_ams stereo.mp3 The first attempt was recorded without the timing measure and the FX processer on the mixer was set for each voice. The results sounded like crap and there was no way to fix it without starting over. You should be glad I did. Since I had to get the manual for AMS out of the folder, I decided to make a command summary sheet much like the MIDI Music System Command Summary sheet. If you think you might use AMS once ever few years you may want a copy of this. Advanced Music System 1 Command Summary.pdf And…. Within the manual there was a section on how to sink your multi track tape machine . After reading that section, I developed a greater appreciation for digital recording software and a much higher regard for Carlos's contributions to electronic music. Then….This turned into a longer term project when my son got me a small delta 3D printer for my birthday. After I learn how to use 3D design software, I plan to use the 5hrs it takes to print an object to complete the Carlos project.
  11. I am trying to use the StereoSID Player 10.3 with my SD2IEC. It locks up when loading SID files (first .MUS file.) Has anyone else run into this problem?
  12. I am wondering how many of you have Ultimate 1MB or another 1mb or 4mb upgrade plus stereo pokey sound and fast loading from SD or sio2USB or similar device... I am doing little research. And how many of you will be able to pay 5-10usd/euro for game every half of year. Its good information not only for me but for others too. With 1088xel this will be standard...So lets use XEL word for such games or apps/demos specs... I own: 1x Ultimate 1mb, Raster Stereo, Raster SDrive all in Atari130XE
  13. I'm away from a real Atari 8-bit computer and a scope, so I was hoping someone in the know can help me with this. What I am seeking is the typical audio output (at maximum volume, peak-to-peak voltage) straight out of POKEY's 'AUDIO' pin-37 with a typical 1K pull-up resistor, and the same for GTIA's 'BELL' pin-15. Thank you in advance, - Michael
  14. This is my modified sharp twin famicom. I added the following: True RGB with no jailbars or video interference. Using a rgb ppu chip from an arcade unit. True S-video with no jailbars or video interference. A N64 multi av port. Removed the low pass filter to remove audio muffle on the default audio circuit. A switch on the back to switch between the default audio circuit and the f-labo kit audio circuit. The expansion connector has been replaced with a standard connector so it's easy for me to wire up custom expansion hardware. Original expansion hardware still works fine with the new port. I soldered in nes controller ports so I can use any standard nes controller on this system. Demonstration video:
  15. I am about to plug a 32x into my model 1. I often use the headphone jack at night on my genesis model one so as not to wake the house. If I have a 32x plugged in, will I still be able to use the jack (to listen to both 32x and Genesis games plugged into the 32x unit)? Or am I better off getting sound from my TV or receiver via the Genesis 2 av cables? I also noticed that sound from the headphone jack has a reasonable amount of background noise compared to getting it from the receiver (from the same source!-that is to say I plug the headphone jack into the "aux in" on my Sony Surround sound amp. I'm thinking this is because most modern receivers have built in Noise Reduction technology for any analog signals it receives. Has anyone else noticed this? Lastly I have seen cables that connect the headphone jack and genesis to the 32x. Are these necessary? Isn't true stereo for both 32x and Genesis games coming out of the back of the 32x via the Genesis 2 AV cables? Thanks
  16. Hey peeps So I have a 7800 PROsystem AV Modded by Electronicsentimentalities and last night I was playing more or less my whole library of 7800 games. They were all coming out of my stereo speakers as beautiful unique channels. Then I popped in Ballblazer, and my sound was left channel only.. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Is it just Ballblazer, all pokey chips, or perhaps a freak side effect of the AV mod? After Ballblazer I played a few more games, and back to stereo with no issues. ?!? Any input would be appreciated, Thanks.
