  1. I've got an older Odyssey 2 (the kind with the beige switchbox that it needs), and I'm having video trouble. I've attached a quick video of what it does. It looks like it switches on for a split second, turns off, repeat..? I had a buddy go over and check the power supply, check the traces on the board, and still no difference. We also tried tapping the RF directly off the internal RF convertor, bypassing the proprietary cable that comes off the back. I'm hoping this is a problem someone else has encountered.
  2. What do you look for in a video game review show on YouTube and elsewhere? I'm thinking about starting one myself and I'm looking for ideas on what you the Atari age user would like to see in it. Are there any games that might not get enough coverage? Is there a certain style that's pleasing to you? Are there any YouTubers I should watch or avoid? I am very interested in everyone's input and am looking forward to hearing back from some of you. I'm just in the pre-production stage at the time I'm posting this (11/6/17),but I'll give you this much: The name of the channel and show will be The Matty Matt Show (stylized as Matty Matt) The review will be five minutes exact. (Trust me, I know how to get there ;3) The reviews will be family friendly. The games featured will cover the gambit from the 2600 and beyond (Perhaps throwing in some newer games and homebrews for older systems). I'd like to stick to multi player games, simultaneous or not. And I look to have a segment on the channel where I interview someone while playing the game with them.
  3. Take a rare look at our favorite vintage Atari 2600 boxes and cover art with The Immortal John Hancock & Metal Jesus Rocks. GAMES SHOWN: Marauder Demon Attack Tanks but no Tanks Threshold Pitfall! (signed by David Crane) Mega Force Missile Command Radar Lock Vanguard Return of the Jedi: Death Star Battle Gyruss Space Invaders Tac/Scan Dark Chambers I realize on this particular forum, the boxes may not be unusual...but for most casual collectors...they rarely see some of these boxes. What did you guys think of the video?
  4. Hi, everybody and welcome to our Atari Age Atari 5200 Podcast thread. Please visit our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/TheAtari5200Podcast/ We will add updates to this thread as time goes on. Bob and I hope you will enjoy the new Atari 5200 Podcast.
  5. After my Vader 2600 has been running for around 10 minutes or so, the colors on the screen start to flicker and fade. The video signal is clear without static or lines. It's just the colors that start to get distorted. Like shown in the video below, the blue background on Ms. Pac MAn turns green. Sometimes it goes completely black and white for a while. I checked the output on the voltage regulator on the board, and it is putting out a steady 5 v. I also turned the color potentiometer. Any ideas? Thanks. https://youtu.be/fIStcwKMiWI
  6. I was bored today so I decided to make a Super Game Module Commercial Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmwFHIe92e4
  7. I've been using an almost stock 130XE with my Black Box. Like most XE's, the video is pretty good, but still not on par with some of my enhanced 600 and 800 XL's. (My absolute best system for video is a 600XL with the "simple" Sumrall video fix, augmented by a few simple improvements from the KJMann video mods. As such, it lacks all the added parts that can be stuffed into the missing component holes, but as I said it is the best I have and I would put it up against any non-VBXE system. The "Quick and Easy" video upgrade certainly makes a great improvement for the 800XL. And I even previously did the Super Video XE from Atari Classics, but to my eyes, the "Super Video XE" does not make much improvement, and is reasonably complicated to boot. All it did for me was to boost the color intensity make the foreground text really strong. So has anyone found any "simple fixes" to enhance the XE's? My actual complaints are that I get "smudgy" faint vertical bands in the background, and the text is not very crisp. (Note, these are not the normal color clock vertical lines.) Picture below shows the bands. I do have the color set very high for this picture to accentuate the bands, but even at normal levels, it is still pretty noticeable. Thanks, Larry
  8. The Nintendo Wii had a ton of great On-Rail Light Gun games for the console, both original and arcade ports. I show you some of my favorites from the collection! Games Shown: Gunblade NY & LA Machineguns Arcade Hits Pack Sin & Punishment: Star Successor Ghost Squad Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Mad Dog McCree Gunslinger Pack Dead Space Extraction House of the Dead Overkill What other games should I add to the Wii on-rail/Light gun game collection?
  9. My Atari 2600 seems to send a signal to my TV but the screen is either black or it's a fuzzy/distorted version. The only way I can get anything to show up on the screen is to repeatedly flip the power switch and the game select button doesn't seem to work. The games show different patterns but the patterns are quite consistent amongst one game. I'm using a VHF to coax to connect to the TV. Thanks in advance for the help!
  10. Not every game controller is created equal. Some are creepy and weird, while others are specialized to a particular game or genre. Others... are just bizarre like Drunken Master Paul's brilliant mind. In this video we show the unusual game controllers in the Metal Jesus game collection! What are some of the more unusual controllers in your collection?
  11. The title pretty much says it all. Has no one attempted/succeed at this? Google searches are fruitless. I feel like, out of several billions of people alive today, I may be the ONE person looking to output my Intellivision via Component. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I'm weird like that, I guess.
  12. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the Intellivision Model 1 system can be modified to be compatible with the Atari 2600 System Changer as well as a Composite A/V mod at the same time? If so, are the modifications easy or are they pretty difficult? I'm really interested in this because it seems like these mods would kill two birds with one stone, especially since my 2600 died recently. Any light that can be shed on the subject is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  13. I made a video talking about deciding which games to keep in my genesis collection along with game video capture from my system. Let me know which games I should keep! https://youtu.be/kBkkrPVn5-A
  14. I bought the StarTech Video Converter VID2HDCON that was recommended by someone in this forum and it appears that you can't plug the Atari 800 plug directly into the composite in. What do I need to make this work. The screen shots in the post that recommended it are awesome. Thanks...
  15. Saw this video on YouTube and thought I would share it here and see if we can get some discussion going. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk4GKXY2wwM Now, I love Gyruss. One of my all time fav arcade games. (And Time Pilot -- no wonder they were done by the same person who went on to do Street Fighter for Capcom.) The action was fast and furious with rich sound and that wonderfull Bach music which the dedicated chips in the machine handled. I played a little bit of various 8-bit versions as a kid, but none of them felt like they did it justice. The NES version was very good but it was a 'remix' of the arcade version instead of a straight port, like the other versions tried. I never felt the game was really done justice in any home versions (not including MAME) until it was added on XBox Live. The 'enhanced' version on the GBA Konami Arcade Classics with the extra stages was also very good and a fav of mine. Now, in Gyruss's defense -- this is a REALLY hard game for any of the 8-bits to do very well. It's a demanding game, with some punishing requirements -- all those enemies and shots and AI paterns and trying to duplicate the rich Bach music. The programers, IMHO, did the best they could. So which version was your favorite, or which one 'seems' best to you?
  16. Good Morning All, I've recently dug out the Atari XE/XEGS whatever you want to call it from storage hooked it up to find I've got no video from any of the output options. I sometimes get just a blank screen then other times I get a brownish screen, most times I get what looks like v-hold failure with a single white bar except its diagonal & rolling no amount of tweaking the v-hold changes anything also I've got no sound. The guy I bought it from was trying to hook it up & not having any luck but figured it was just him not knowing how to hook it into his modern flat screen. I bought it untested from the counter of a RadioShack after he got frustrated by the clerks trying to sell him $30 worth of adapters so I've never actually seen it working myself. Things I've tried: 1: Multiple screens/outputs/cables. 2: Tested power supply voltages which were accurate. 3: Cart/No Cart inserted. 4: Booting into the self test. 5: Checking for hot chips on the mainboard none are particularly concerning. I can thermal image the entire board later. 6: Just hoping it was waking up from a long slumber. I'd appreciate any ideas as troubleshooting this beast doesn't seem to be covered all that well anywhere nor does a FSM appear to exist. Where would I buy any spares for this machine as I understand some of these parts are exclusive to the XE/XEGS. Thanks
  17. I saw a cool video about Carnival that made me want to play it and post some high scores so I thought I would share: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QyLKtVp1HNg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  18. OK, let's try this once again. What do you folks think of the end cap labels that I remade from scratch. Did I miss any variations? Spell check appreciated too. Printed these on standard paper so not finished yet. Be kind, remember I am an amateur. Thanks!
  19. So I've got myself a new, or to me at least, Atari 800XL PAL (Manf. Taiwan) version that seems pretty much untouched. I've just built an SIO2PI, and SIO2Arduino to start getting software on to it but with regards to memory and video upgrades I'm a bit lost with all of the options mentioned in the forums. Firstly with the video. I've got an s-video to VGA converter which I want to use, and I've seen a lot of recommendations to go the way of UAV but as I understand Bryan's got a lot going on these days and won't be producing more boards until next year at the earliest. I took a quick look at the s-video modifications thread which started in 2009 but it's really hard to figure out what the latest suggestions/methods are in this thread with a number of changes made in the last few years. Unfortunately Sophia is out of price range for me at the moment, especially with shipping and import taxes where I'm located. What are the options for improving the video signal these days? Homebrew/DIY preferred over trying to get boards into the country. Secondly, I'd like to upgrade the memory a little. Again, U1MB seems to be the go for solution these days but though the board is only $80 I'm looking at another $100 on shipping and customs fees. Looking at the stuff I want to do, 256K would be sufficient but I've no idea if there's any highly compatible, reasonably straight forward upgrades currently available, or again homebrew/DIY. Soldering is not an issue so not necessarily needing plug-in solutions. Anyway, great to be accepted into the community; the last one I was part of was the FaST club in the UK back in the 90's but feel more at home with my 800XL on my desk. Any help or advice on getting started also gladly accepted.
  20. You guys all need to check this video out, this guy has one of the most well rounded collection I've ever seen. He has some of the best stuff out there and a few things I didn't even know existed. http://retrogamersociety.com/rgs-video-collectors-edition-episode-4/
  21. Hi All, I recently got a Atari 2600 Vader (4 switch). The problem I have is with the video. The bottom of the screen has a verical bar on each side below the main picture. Also, the left side of the screen I see tearing. Anyone know what can cause this? Thank You.
  22. Check out this trailer for a new web series a friend of mine and I are starting later this week. We are giving away an Action Set as a subscriber contest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYgac1hZtuY
  23. Hello everyone, I've been having troubles with my 2600 for ever. It's starting to irritate me pretty badly, I haven't been able to play any those games in months. I asked around to try and figure out what was wrong, they said to replace the voltage regulator. I ran up to Radioshack, made sure I had the right part and replaced it. Anyways, before I ask anyone for advice you need to know what the problem is. The picture isn't great so I'll explain that too. Not all games do this but most. Othello, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, and River Raid are a few that do it. I played Golf a bit earlier and I had no problems at all. It seems like games with more colors and movements are more prone to the screen being distorted. The screen starts to get blurry and it gets worse after a minute. It moves around a little bit too. If I'm not being detailed enough, please don't hesitate to ask for me to be more direct. I want this thing in working condition. Any advice is highly appreciated.
