  1. I created a simple game for the Atari Jaguar that I would like to share (file attached to this thread). It is called Star Fighter and it is a simple Asteroids clone. I consider the game to be a fun diversion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. Mind you it is still rough around the edges but it is playable. Any and all feedback is appreciated as I am still polishing the game and your feedback may very well influence the changes I make. Lastly, this game, albeit simple, would not have been possible without the wonderful help I received in the programming threads here on AtariAge as well as the wonderful graphical and music assets created by Ansimuz. Enjoy! I have tested this game on Virtual Jaguar and on the Atari Jaguar by means of a Skunk board. If you are a Jaguar developer and are interested in lending a hand let me know, as I am in need of some assistance with more advanced Jaguar programming subject matter! starfighter.rom
  2. Hello, I am only looking for a doom manual (atari jaguar). Thank you for your offers. Kind regards Sebastian
  3. I'm a bit of a novice game collector. It's something I enjoy, but as a college student, money is tight so I need to be careful about what I purchase. But to those of you who invest in the Atari Jaguar console, and by extension the notoriously unreliable JagCD, what got you into collecting for it? How did you start? How difficult is it to get ahold of the system and the games? I was thinking of potentially collecting for it many years down the line when I have stable income.
  4. The Jaguar has got to remain one of the coolest, most fascinating pieces of hardware to ever emerge as a gaming console. At least for me, anyways. On one side, you have these incredibly powerful GPU and DSP chipsets. Even with the hardware bugs they may contain, they’re capable of doing some impressive things given the 1992/1993 time frame and price point they were released in. On the other hand, it’s completely bottlenecked by Atari’s cost cutting decisions and hand-forced limitations due to memory constraints and a unified system bus architecture that is further diminished by the 16-bit Motorola 68000. The system was originally designed around a 32-bit 68030 and 4MB of RAM. Imagine how much of a difference having twice the available RAM and a far faster CPU with proper bus access would have made! Alas, that was not to be the case. Hindered performance be damned, we still got one hell of a cool cat that certainly has a unique personality. So, yadda yadda yadda. Why am I still rambling about this sort of stuff in 2024? Well, because from a hobbyist homebrew developer standpoint, we’re on the brink of a major turning point. I started my homebrew development journey in late 2017 on the Jaguar with Raptor Basic and have worked on dozens of things (mostly unseen) during this time. It had been somewhat a lifelong dream to create games for one of my favorite consoles of all time. So, I set out to learn 3D modeling and rendering, music composition and programming. This is pre-Jaguar game drive mind you. Rb+ evolved and matured into what is now JagStudio. For those who may be unaware, it’s a free and rather incredible software development package aimed at allowing anyone to make games on the Jaguar in c, assembly or even basic. Snag it here: https://reboot-games.com/jagstudio/ All this, thanks to several hardcore and dedicated hobbyists who continue to devote their free time to improve these tools for others to make cool things as time goes on. Jaguar community gets a lot of static for ruffled feathers but this is the gold standard of community driven inspiration that fuels fun and creativity. JagStudio is getting a major update soon. One that will allow things to be done that was seemingly impossible on the Jaguar before. I won’t let the cat out of the bag until it’s ready, but the guys working behind the scenes to make this pivotal shifting point possible (CJ and Rik) deserve some major kudos! Granted, the roadway here has been a long one. So many other devs have contributed to what has morphed into and become JagStudio, where do you even start. Maybe a proper credits page should be added on the site. (inserting major kudos to all here!) Anyways, on to bigger and better things. Here’s to 2024 being a super cool year for the Jag all-around. It’s a really exciting time to be a Jag fan. I’m pretty excited with the little things I’ve been able to achieve with it all behind the scenes, that it almost feels unreal. Soon….
  5. Of course the Jaguar doesn’t have an internal clock for time and date settings. At least it didn’t, until now… Programming the more mundane parts of a bigger picture are boring but essential. I wouldn’t call this fun either. Now let’s see if I can get this “save game state” working for all the stats.
  6. Before I begin, this will focus on original titles, and not arcade ports. -Zenithian Khei (Mega Man X meets Super Turrican 2) -Ginnan (Actraiser with an Old English/Anglo-Saxon twist. Part of the Middanyeard series.) -At least three shmups/space shooters. -At least two more Middanyeard games. -At least two titles in the Demon Lands series. -One Isometric game.
  7. From Atari and developer Digital Eclipse, a new anthology coming to the VCS and other platforms in Q4 2022: Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration https://www.atari.com/games/50th-celebration/
  8. I like the 7800 and 5200 games (store/vault) on the vcs. Any talks of future Jaguar games? I feel with a lower price (I got my VCS for 250) and Jaguar games in the store, you're going to see more VCS owners imo. Having every atari console on the vcs would be great. There would be a lot of people that would purchase NBA Jam, Doom, Tempest 2000, and Aliens vs Predator.
  9. I'm selling two of my Jaguars as complete starters sets (No box/manual/inserts, but all the "useful" stuff that came with the launch kit). One is on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/134505699892 - SOLD! The other, I'm selling here for significantly less, with the caveat that I'm hoping it will go to someone who will actually play it or develop on it, rather than just put it on a shelf or resale it, so interested buyers will have to PM me and make your case a little. I'll ignore inquiries that don't at least attempt to tell me about how you plan to use the unit. If you already have a Jaguar and are looking for a second, or if you want a showpiece, look elsewhere please. I'm hoping to help someone get started here. I can't verify anything. You're on the honor system, but keep in mind I know the serial number of this unit, and I like to browse eBay just for kicks. This Jaguar console has a small cosmetic blemish on it, as can be seen in the pictures, and the Cybermorph label has been partially peeled back in one corner, so they're not exactly "collector quality" anyway. Everything is, however, 100% functional, and I've given the cartridge edge and the cartridge slot a fresh cleaning to ensure no (Minimal? You're always going to hit these on occasion with Jaguar games.) red screen experience. See the picture of this actual unit & set of accessories connected up together and functional. If there are any questions about the condition or quality of the items, please ask them here in the thread so others can benefit from the answer as well. I'll ignore such questions via PM. The price is $300.00. Shipping will be $20 for USPS priority mail in the US (below cost), and at-cost for USPS international priority mail for international buyers if needed. I'll accept either Paypal or Venmo as payment. This is an NTSC/US unit. See my small user feedback thread here: But note I also sold nearly 100 Skunkboards with zero returns or complaints here as well, so I like to think I'm a known quantity around here at this point:
  10. For you specifically, what was your experience with Atari's failed (Yet awesome) console. Do you still own it and do you recommend it to new buyers? If so, why?
  11. Hello JAGUAR fans all over the world! Here we are again with another nice piece of gear themed after your beloved 64-bit system. This time it's a Jaguar backpack with factory made elastic zipper-tag featuring beautiful "JAGUAR" logo! More details about our new product can be found, among others via eBay: eBay UK eBay USA
  12. Some more music ideas: To be specific: For Death's Dealer, a Super Castlevania 4 clone.
  13. 1. No bugs, glitches, or crashing. 2. Good art direction and color theory. 3. Tight, responsive controls. Even Out of this World, Flashback, and Oddworld's grid-based movement was responsive. 4. Decent graphics or better. 5. Good sound effects and music. 6. Appropriate pacing. 7. A decent story or better. 8. Both physical and digital releases. (Yes, I'm including cart and CD.) 9. Addicting gameplay and just plain fun.
  14. Atari Jaguar motherboard stock image. Hi i picked up this NTSC Jag a while back for a really good price. It was sold as parts. It arrived but had no cables or games to test it with. I then got straight to ordering and installing the parts for it. I assumed it was the typical no power fault. I ordered and replaced the Caps, Replacement custom Bios socketed, Power Button as it was missing a power button, looks like somebody worked on this before. All of that was ordered from Console5 and installed. Then i ordered and replaced the Reg1 Sound chip and the U38 Regulator Chip commonly known to fail. I then installed the 50/60hz switch mod, a very simple mod and did the diode mod to protect the console from reverse polarity, also a basic mod. I then ordered the PSU 9v 2amps, a game Iron Solder mint in box, a boxed controller, RGB cables from Retro GameCables. I was ready to test and enjoy playing on this machine. I powered it on and no video signal, no audio. Tried it directly through the tv and nothing, no signal. I tried it through the OSSC and same thing, no sync, almost as if it wasn’t even turned on even though the Led is brightly lit. I then realised this is more complicated then i thought. I tried switching to RF and it made no difference. I undid the Diode mod, it made no difference. I went over my caps i broke two traces during the recapping process but fixed it right after i originally replaced those caps. I reflowed and tested those damaged traces and checked for other damaged traces with my multimeter, and i did not find any cut traces. I checked whether the caps were in the right place and everything was installed in the right place, in the right polarity. I reflowed the cart connector, bios, Reg1 and U38 chips and it made no difference, socketed the old bios back in and nothing. I cleaned the motherboard again with ipa 99% making sure i get the cart and av connector cleaned properly with my qtips and a soft pcb brush and nothing. I then tried to tap out the audio from the RF connections using my headphone jack shorted with ground and i only get a slight puffy sound. I lastly decided to put my finger on the CPU chip and that runs warm. The Graphics chip and that pretty much runs hot, is that normal? Overall i can’t figure out what’s wrong with this Jaguar and what the cause of it’s fault is. Can anyone help me figure this out? It’s sad coming across a fault like this on a rare system. I presume the Graphics chip is dead in this machine or hopefully maybe the video encoder chip, ram, missing parts maybe, not sure. I order a replacement power inductor. 120uh/mh and will see if that fixes it when it arrives.
  15. Welcome to the VirtualVCS (Atari 2600) emulator for the Atari Jaguar written by Bryan Edewaard and Damien Jones of Temporary Sanity Designs (TSD). Fun stories of the development can be found at this place, and this place. ------------------------------------------------------------- Over time TSD handed the VirtualVCS source code to Carl Forhan who assemebled, with considerable work, the VirtualVCS demo that has floated around the internet for years. With the release by Curt Vendel, Atari Historian, of the other Atari 2600 emulator, it has been the hope of Carl, Curt, and many others (including myself) to one day see working Atari 2600 games on the Atari Jaguar. As later explained in this message under "Background information" game images have been hex edited in to replace the game images already in the VirtualVCS demo. The menu graphics format in VirtualVCS were unraveled by sh3-rg. A sweep for "STA CXCLR" (85 2c) and those that use that method of hit detection also helped. The main objective is to find games that work in the confines of the abilities of VirtualVCS in it's alpha state. The strengths of this emulator being very close to true speed emulation, good controls, and many display abilities intact. The weaknesses being no sound, no hit detection, some display abilities needing refinement and no apparent bank switching ability using rom images of 4K or less. Limiting, but not impossible. All efforts are for the enjoyment of the Jaguar community, and in the hopes to understanding the true technical limitations to add in better development of VirtualVCS and/or the 2600 emulator later down the road. Images can be loaded on rom loaders (Skunkboard, Flash card (though not tested)) to try out. No actual cartridges will be sold from this, strictly fun and research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Downloads!! 16. For one Jaguar homebrew idea I have, here's what I want it to sound for the most part: I have two songs for it made, along with some graphics. Speaking of Baroque, the Saturn/PS1 is now available in English and Spanish! If you have a Satiator or a PS1 SD card reader, now is the time to download the patches. (I have the Wii remake, by the way.)

  20. Could the release of the infamous Black Ice/White Noise saved the Jaguar and even Atari? Myself and the rest of the Arcade Attack crew have recorded a special Atari Jaguar CD podcast for Arcade where we discuss the ill-fated peripheral, why it failed and whether Black Ice/White Noise could have helped save the Jaguar and even Atari! Please give it a listen if you get a chance and let me know if you agree with our verdict - here are all the nice links below: http://www.arcadeattack.co.uk/podcast-july-2-2017/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/arcade-attack-podcast/id1174983594 https://soundcloud.com/user-960533620 http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/arcade-attack-retro-gaming-podcast http://arcadeattackpodcast.podbean.com/?source=pb https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb6cTE7T1yiBMdrb6qcrRXw If you enjoyed the podcast, please feel free to subscribe for future episodes. 21. Hey All! In a few weeks I'll be releasing my JAG2GEN Jaguar AV adapter. This adapter allows you to connect Sega Genesis (Model 2) AV cables to your Atari Jaguar. This provides a more common and readily available solution for connecting your Atari Jaguar to an SDTV or HDTV. The JAG2GEN works great with HD Retrovision cables (Genesis Model 2) and works even better with HD Retrovision cables connected to a scan converter like OSSC. I've created a sign up list for anyone interest: https://www.humblebazooka.com/product/jag2gen-jaguar-av-to-genesis-cables/ (pre-production shell subject to change upon release) Features: Supports Genesis Model 2 AV cabes Supports HD Retrovision cables Allows you to use an OSSC or RetroTink to upscale for better video quality Properly attenuated sync Custom designed and professionally assembled PCB Custom designed 3D printed shell FAQ: Q) What is the JAG2GEN? A) The JAG2GEN is an adapter that simply converts your Jaguar’s AV signal to that of a Genesis model 2 AV cable. Q) Will it make my picture quality look better A) Not by itself but the JAG2GEN captures your Jaguar’s RGB signals allowing a scan converter to make your Jaguar games look amazing. Q) Why not straight to HDMI? A) Converting and upscaling 240p signal from RGB requires a lot of development time in hardware and software, requiring hardware that would inflate the cost of this adapter to the end user. I wanted to develop something simple that anyone can afford and use. Q) Is this the same thing as Helder's "JAG2SNES" adapter? A) It's very similar and uses a similar circuit and components. The JAG2SNES was actually my idea I pitched to Helder who then made the PCBs. I designed the shell, did all the R&D testing, and we eventually got the adapter to market. I've learned from that experience and decided to make my own adapter and offer an option for people with Genesis model 2 AV cables. Q) Is this the same thing as Jody Hicks' (Judas-Prime) Jag AV adapters? A) Nope - same concept, different execution! This is a ground up solution I've developed. If you already own Jody's adapter, there's probably no reason to buy this if his performs how you want it to. I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys how awesome of a dude Jody is. But he openly endorsed Helder's and my JAG2SNES adapter via Twitter, which he didn't have to do.
  22. Hi, For anyone interested, I have listed my Atari Jaguar Translucent console shell along with a translucent Jaguar cartridge shel (with ATARI and Fuji logos on back) on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/194808102590?hash=item2d5b77bebe:g:H8UAAOSwA7BiAv39 I purchased this from the moulding that was going to be used for the now (and perhaps always) defunct RETRO VGS project. I planned to do something with this shell but never got around to it so it comes NEW/Unused. Cheers!! Serblander
  23. Every once in a while I use my limited photoshop skills to dream what if Atari would have been taking over the video games industry with the Jag.
  24. My Retro/Vintage Gaming Hobby I Am a Child from the Dawn of the Video Game Age Taking a side trip here away from my adventures here. Anyone who knows me personally, can attest that I am somewhat of a geek and so it’s no surprise that I became an mechanical/aerospace engineer by trade. With that stated, I always had an interest in building things and tinkering with electronics, etc.. As I was growing up in the 70's I was fortunate to experience and be able to participate in the dawn of a new era. It all started simple enough with my father coming back from a business trip in Texas one year with one of the first ever digital calculators. I was hooked. I loved the display, the tactile feel of the buttons and the ease of use. I was further inspired when I saw advanced calculators becoming available and even into my high school and college years where I always had to have the latest programmable calculators for my science, math and eventually engineering courses. Now this seems pretty minor in this day and age, but back then, looong before cell phones, home computers, high level object oriented programming languages, etc.. this was an exciting era for me. Read more here... http://rubikonadventures.blogspot.com... A long time friend of mine came by for a visit one day and asked if it was OK to shoot video of my old video game collection and my "man cave" where I hibernate during the winter months when I am not out exploring. Enjoy another facet of my persona here: https://youtu.be/818OZog0Y4I Me Meeting Nolan Bushnell, Founder of Atari and founder of the industry.
